APRILIA RSV4 EVOLVES RADICALLY TO CONTINUE BEING THE BEST SUPERBIKE EVER AND, THANKS TO THE NEW V4-MP APP NOW TELEMETRY IS INTRODUCED

APRILIA RSV4 RR “RACE PACK”

The new Aprilia RSV4 RR is the natural evolution of a revolutionary project which has successfully dominated World SBK, with 7 world titles won in 6 years, establishing itself as the best superbike of all times. Aprilia RSV4 is a global reference point for sportiness and performance, the best example of what can be achieved by exploiting the valuable experience of a victorious Racing Department like Aprilia's which, in its brief history has taken 54 championship titles. Skills honed on the track and transferred to the factory product to give advanced users the same excitement as the motorbikes prepared by Aprilia Racing for global competitions.
Unrivalled for its brilliant design and applied technology, the Aprilia RSV4 was conceived around a 65° V4 engine that had never before been seen on a factory sport bike, a frame which is the heir to a dynasty that won 18 titles and 143 Grand Prix races in the 250 GP class, enhanced by the most modern electronics systems applied to managing the engine and the bike dynamics. A genuine vocation of Aprilia which led it to be the first manufacturer to adopt Ride-by-wire as standard equipment, the multimap power output system, but above all the first to patent the aPRC dynamic controls platform with the exclusive self-calibration and wheelie control features.
The goal of the efforts made at Noale to create the new RSV4 RR was the same one that has set the RSV4 apart from the very first version in 2009: to be the absolute best uncompromising superbike, the street bike that comes the closest to being a real racing bike in terms of performance and effectiveness. Aprilia RSV4 RR is equipped with all the electronic and technical refinements that a rider could want, with the possibility of making a further and definitive upgrade by choosing the “Race Pack”, which includes exclusive aluminium forged rims and professional Öhlins suspension. To celebrate the arrival of the new king of superbikes, Aprilia is also offering a limited edition version – the RSV4 RF – characterised by a dedicated livery and elements of the Race Pack included as standard equipment.

APRILIA RSV4 RF

THE NEW SUPERBIKE ERA

Aprilia RSV4 RR represents the most important and profound advancement ever made on this extraordinary model. A development that even involved the design. The style of the new RSV4 is the result of the perfect combination of form and function. The careful design led to the creation of the most compact full size sport bike on the market, where technical elements such as the impeccable aluminium double rail frame contribute to emphasising its racing vocation.
The front end has been completely redesigned: now there is a new, more protective top fairing, created after a careful wind tunnel aerodynamics study, which provides better protection from the wind for riders of any height. This choice has a positive impact not only on the track when the rider is seeking protection to achieve maximum speed, but also on the road where greater comfort is provided thanks to the lower air pressure on the body and helmet. The characteristic triple headlight is also new, now with a more modern shape and an LED parking light. The mirrors are new, also the subject of a wind tunnel study, which combine excellent aerodynamic penetration with improved visibility and built in LED turn indicators.

THE ENGINE: A JEWEL OF ITALIAN TECHNOLOGY

In terms of quantity and quality of the operations, the unrivalled Aprilia V4 has every right to consider itself a radically new unit: if there were any doubts, they are quickly dispelled by the more than 16 additional HP and the 1.5 kg less than its predecessor. This is one of the Aprilia RSV4 RR elements that is most closely derived from the racing world and the one on which the Aprilia Racing Department was able to work the most with the factory production. The primary and unique characteristics of this gem of Italian technology, the ones that led to the creation of the best superbike of all times, remain unchanged. This is the world's first full scale production motorcycle with a high performance narrow V4 engine, the most revolutionary and powerful engine ever built by Aprilia. An engine that has become unmistakeable because of the use of “total” electronics, because of its extremely compact size and exceptional light weight.
The main goals of the new V4 project were clear: increase power across the board, exceeding the threshold of 200 HP maximum peak and at the same time increase the already generous torque at all engine speeds. To achieve them work was done on decreasing internal friction, improving combustion efficiency and fluid-dynamic efficiency as well as on increasing the maximum rotation speed. The Noale engineers redesigned almost all of the internal and external elements.

2015 Aprilia RSV4 RR walk-around | EICMA 2014‬‬‬

Starting from the top, the 65° V4 has a new air box with filtering elements perpendicular to the air flow, studied with sophisticated CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) systems in order to minimise load losses and maximum pressure in the intake ducts. The upper injectors are new, whereas the variable setting intake ducts were redesigned to the benefit of an even wider range of management in terms of their travel. As with previous models, each bank has a dedicated servo unit actuating the two throttle bodies of that bank only. This means that the aperture of the throttle valves and consequently the quantity of fuel injected can be controlled independently. This is a never before used solution in a production bike that opens up practically infinite possibilities for power delivery control and works hand in hand with the aPRC system.
In order to improve the fluid dynamic performance, the heads were redesigned with intake and output ducts that have new geometries and contouring on the ends machined by a numerically controlled tool. The combustion chambers are no longer obtained through a fusion process but by a finer mechanical process which is also numerically controlled. In order to improve reliability and precision under extreme loads the height of the valve seat seals was increased and the relative lubrication reservoir was modified. The heads now have a triple layer of gaskets. The timing system confirms the innovative mixed chain and gear kinematics of the Aprilia V4 (with the chain camshaft driving only the intake camshaft, which in turn drives the exhaust camshaft via a gear) which allows for extremely compact heads especially in the area beneath the frame spars, much narrower than would otherwise be possible. In order to increase the maximum rotation speed a painstaking study was conducted on lightening the parts in motion of the elements included in the heads. All four valves are now in precious and lightweight titanium (the intake valves are oversized at 33 mm); the valve springs are completely new, the intake valve springs are made with oval section wire whereas the relative tappets and caps were lightened. The camshafts have a brand new profile and were lightened by a whole 500 grams. Moving downward, the crankshaft now has connecting rod pins reduced to 36 mm in diameter, while the Pankl connecting rods are lighter by a total of 400 grams.
As in previous models, the monobloc crankcase with integrated aluminium cylinder liners ensures maximum rigidity and consistent performance. The upper half of the engine case is now made with a new shell fusion and has been lightened and reinforced; it also now has an optimised ventilation system in order to reduce power loss due to air pressure inside the engine crankcase. The lubrication system has also been redesigned. A brand new oil sump ensures increased draught no matter what position the engine is in (for example in the most extreme leans or in maximum acceleration/deceleration conditions) despite the oil level being decreased in order to decrease friction. The “rose pipe” is also new (oil pump intake line), now equipped with a new overpressure valve and thinner mesh filter. The piston cooling oil nozzles were also replaced and the gearbox now has a valve regulated direct hydraulic lubrication circuit. The latter uses lightened primary drive gears and takes advantage of new ratios which have been optimised to fully exploit the increased engine power. The entire exhaust system has also been completely redesigned with revamped electronic valve management, now equipped with two oxygen sensors (one per bank), while a new, more powerful ECU contributes to more precise management of the engine in the area of maximum rotation achievable.

CHASSIS ARCHITECTURE: AMONG THE BEST IN THE WORLD

Aprilia is known as one of the best chassis manufacturers in the world and the RSV4 RR represents the synthesis of the technical prowess Aprilia has acquired in top level world championships. A particularity which is still exclusive to the RSV4 RR (and which has always been a characteristic of the previous generation RSV4 models) is the exceptional – and exclusive – possibility of adjustments that the standard equipment chassis is able to offer. In fact, the new Aprilia is the only superbike that allows the rider to adjust the engine position in the frame, the headstock angle, the swingarm pivot and the rear end height, naturally in addition to the fully adjustable suspension. Just like a real racing bike.
The highly sought after and winning structure of the Aprilia RSV4 frame has remained substantially unchanged and uses elements in pressed and cast aluminium capable of guaranteeing exceptional performance, thanks in part to the perfectly balanced torsional rigidity and flexibility values. Optimally centralised masses are just one of the RSV4 chassis strengths. To achieve this result nothing was neglected. The swingarm the same construction technology as the frame but it has been lengthened 14 mm to guarantee better traction and to decrease the tendency for wheelies during the violent acceleration that the new extraordinary characteristics of the powerplant allow. Precisely because of the V4's significant power increase the chassis and weight distribution configuration have been revamped: the engine is mounted in the lowest possible position allowed by its adjustment range within the frame, whereas the fully adjustable suspension has been fine tuned to guarantee maximum control in extreme riding.

ADVANCED aPRC

Aprilia RSV4 RR perfects what was already top shelf in the previous versions thanks to a significant improvement to its already exceptional dynamic controls package designed and patented by Aprilia. aPRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) is the well-known control systems package derived directly from the winning technology in the World Superbike championship, the most complete of its kind available on the market today.
On the RSV4 RR, aPRC has been further developed to adjust even better to the new engine and chassis characteristics in order to meet the specific needs of the pleasure or professional rider. The new aPRC system integrates even better with the full Ride-by-Wire multimap precision electronic management of the Aprilia V4.
aPRC, which comes as standard equipment on the Aprilia RSV4 RR, includes:
  • aTC: Aprilia Traction Control, adjustable on the fly (without having to release the throttle) to 8 settings thanks to a practical joystick on the left side of the handlebar, with extremely fine tuned operating logic;
  • aWC: Aprilia Wheelie Control, adjustable to three settings, has been recalibrated for maximum performance at level 1 (the least restrictive setting);
  • aLC: Aprilia Launch Control, the assisted starting system for use on the track only with 3 settings;
  • aQS: Aprilia Quick Shift electronic gearbox for ultra-fast shifting without closing the throttle or using the clutch.
In addition to the second generation aPRC system, RSV4 RR comes from the factory standard with the highly advanced “Race ABS” antilock braking system, designed and developed by Aprilia in collaboration with Bosch to guarantee not only extreme safety on the road, but also the best possible performance on the track. The 9MP ABS unit is top of the line in currently available refinements and technology: the system, which weighs only 2 kg, can be disengaged and is adjustable to 3 settings by easily accessing the control menu on the sophisticated instrument cluster:
  • Level 1: this is dedicated to track use (but it is also approved for street use) and acts on both wheels to guarantee the best possible performance, even in the most intense braking conditions at any speed. It takes nothing away from the pleasure and performance of “extreme” riding.
  • Level 2: this is dedicated to sport riding on the road, acts on both wheels and is combined with an advanced tip over system (RLM - Rear Lift-up Mitigation) which engages progressively based on the vehicle speed.
  • Level 3: this is dedicated to riding on surfaces with poor grip, acts on both wheels and is combined with the tip over system.
Each of the 3 setting levels for Race ABS can be combined with any one of the 3 new engine maps to allow riders with varying experience and skill levels to find the best possible combination.
The new and powerful engine ECU now allows the three maps to be more easily managed, each one of which corresponds to a different engine power output and now also to a dedicated engine brake management map. The two classic engine management logics Track and Sport are now joined by the new Race map, the most extreme and suited for professional use of the bike on the track with engine braking control reduced to a minimum in order to support more abrupt braking. All three maps are more manageable and less aggressive than the previous version, therefore allowing perfect correlation between throttle control and the torque sent to the wheels. This reduces rear tyre wear and makes it possible to better manage the power that the Aprilia V4 is able to develop.

VERSIONS AND COLOURS

Aprilia RSV4 RR represents a top shelf technical platform, ready to provide the rider with a “race replica” performance and feeling. As standard equipment it also has all of those features which only the Factory version RSV4 had previously, such as magnesium external housings, oil sump and head covers, a wide range of chassis adjustments and the variable setting intake ducts. Aprilia RSV4 RR is available in two attractive colour schemes, both matte, on a black and grey base (Bucine gray and black Ascari) and a “Race Pack” is also available that includes lightweight forged aluminium wheel rims and more sophisticated Öhlins suspension (shock absorbers, fork and steering damper).
To celebrate the arrival of the new RSV4, Aprilia is also offering a limited edition of 500 numbered units called the RSV4 RF, which comes standard with the Race Pack, as well as a dedicated graphic called “Superpole”.

APRILIA V4 DAYS AT MISANO

LEON HASLAM AND JORDI TORRES
CHRISTEN THE NEW APRILIA RSV4 AND TUONO 1100

LEON: “EXTRAORDINARY BIKES, HARD TO CONVINCE ME NOT TO TAKE THEM OUT FOR A RIDE”. JORDI: “I'M ASTONISHED AT THE LEVEL OF THE V4-MP MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM”

Misano Adriatico, 15 April 2015 – Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres were special guest testimonials are at Misano Adriatico for the V4 Days, where Aprilia was introducing the brand new RSV4 RF and RR and the Tuono 1100 Factory and RR to the international press and customers. Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres, Aprilia Racing Team–Red Devils standard bearers in the World Superbike championship, made a stop at the Misano World Circuit to christen the brand new V4 street bikes from Noale. On their way back from Aragon and just twenty-four hours from departing for Assen, the British rider and his Spanish colleague found themselves in the spotlight for a technical briefing before the participating journalists got onto the track.
“I couldn't pass up the chance to come to Misano to introduce the new street version of my RSV4 – stated Leon Haslamand I really had to struggle to resist getting on and taking it for a ride! The level that these bikes have reached is extraordinary. A customer with the Aprilia RSV4 can take advantage of a chassis, electronic controls and top shelf performance which are very close to an authentic Superbike.”
Jordi Torres: “Today I had fun being a “teacher” for the journalists, explaining the characteristics of the Misano track and seeing the street version of the RSV4 RF in action I was surprised at the unmistakeable sound of the V4. I'm also amazed by the hypernaked of this bike, the Tuono 1100: now the problem is that I want a Tuono for myself to ride on the street!”

The two World Superbike riders also had positive things to say about the fantastic new technology that Aprilia has launched, the Aprilia V4-MP multimedia platform which transforms the customer's smartphone into an exceptionally capable informative instrument. "Because of my age I was basically born with the smartphone – said Jordi – but Aprilia has developed something truly different than any other app in the motorcycle world. This application is really close to the professional instruments that we riders use." For Leon the V4-MP was also a pleasant surprise: "You open it and you are immediately localised in the Misano garages, but that is normal in this day and age" said the British rider. "What makes the difference is that the smartphone dialogues with the bike's control unit and the possibility of setting, turn by turn – on any circuit – the traction control and anti-wheeling sensitivity, to then analyse your performance at the end of the session and try to improve to find the best lap."

NEW APRILIA RSV4 AND TUONO 1100: PROFOUND EVOLUTION

The new Aprilia RSV4 introduced over the last few days at Misano Adriatico – a track where the RSV4 has taken 4 wins and 4 podiums in the last five seasons – represents the most important and profound evolution ever achieved on this extraordinary model that has one 7 world titles in just 5 years of participation in WSBK, adding 54 championship wreaths to the Aprilia trophy case. The main goals of the new V4 project are clear: increase power across the board, exceeding the threshold of 200 HP maximum peak and at the same time increase the already generous torque at all engine speeds. The new Aprilia is also the only Superbike that allows the rider to adjust the engine position in the frame, the headstock angle, the swingarm pivot and the rear end height, naturally in addition to the fully adjustable suspension.
APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) is the well-known control systems package derived directly from the winning technology in the World Superbike championship, the most complete of its kind available on the market today. A GUIDE FOR NEW BIKERS

FIRST BIKE, FIRST LOVE

WHICH IS THE RIGHT BIKE FOR A NOVICE? YOUR CHOICE, A MIXTURE OF HEART AND HEAD, DEPENDS ON A NUMBER OF FACTORS

Until fairly recently, most motorcyclists literally grew up on two wheels. As soon as they were 14, they began whizzing around on a 50 c model: the “cinquantino”. Two years later, they would make the transition to the 125, which enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to the new technical advances that escalated power and performance. As a result, the eighteen-year-old who turned up at the local dealer was usually a relatively expert motorcyclist, with four years riding experience and the ability to handle interesting weight-power combinations. So it was not unusual to see a very young biker on the saddle of a powerful super sport model, even if it may not have been prudent. Then the rules of the game changed as new legislation was introduced in Italy (and other European countries): today’s limits and the introduction of new licence categories in addition to the type “A” driving licence has made the choice of two-wheeler more difficult. Nevertheless, there are still a number of golden rules. Here’s what you need to know when buying your first motorbike.

WEIGHT AND SIZE

These are the key factors that dictate your approach. A large, heavy motorcycle will at first be more difficult to move and ride compared with a light, agile small-size twin-cylinder model (such as the Moto Guzzi V7 II). Depending on the build of the rider, you should consider the weight of the bike when it is road ready, with a full tank and all liquids. Another vital consideration is the height of the saddle: we should say that many constructors have made their models more accessible, with height-adjustable seats and – often as an option – saddles designed to lower further the point of contact. You should also look at the dimensions of the so-called “triangle” formed by the saddle, handlebar and footboard: some models, including many custom bikes, feature special handlebars or place the footboard further forward than a standard configuration.

SAFETY FEATURES

The continual introduction of riding aids means bikers should pay attention to the features each model offers. ABS braking is now much more than an accessory: it is the main and most effective safety feature, and indispensable. Another very useful and increasingly popular aid is traction control, which enables riders to control dangerous rear wheel skids. Some models, such as the Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono V4, also provide features such as wheelie control, which are useful, but perhaps not a primary consideration for a beginner.

ENGINES AND DISPLACEMENT

Cylinder layout: this has relative importance; in the past, the choice between a mono-cylinder, a twin-cylinder or another layout was significant in determining ridability, but electronic engine management has made everything simpler today. Even the larger twin-cylinders, which used to be cantankerous at low revs, are much more docile today. Engines still have their own “personalities”, of course: for example a straight three-cylinder engine will deliver torque at low revs and offer excellent top speed; a straight four-cylinder model will be smooth even at parade speed, albeit renouncing some torque, and will power up vigorously to top speed until the rev counter hits the red. So your choice depends on your personal preferences.

A LOOK AT THE LAW

As we said, the laws have changed in Italy over the last few years: today, there are three categories of licence, in addition to the moped licence:
  • A1: minimum age 16. With this licence, you can ride motorcycles up to 125cc with maximum power of 11 kW, as well as tricycles with not more than 15 kW.
  • A2: minimum age 18, to ride any displacement but power of not more than 35 kW and a power-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg. The original maximum power of depowered models may not exceed 70 kW.
  • A3: no limits on displacement and power; you can obtain this licence at 20 if you have held an A2 licence for at least two years, or at 24 if you have no previous licence.
This is not the place for a list of the regulatory requirements of other countries, which vary significantly from nation to nation. So check out current legislation before you buy your first motorcycle to avoid unpleasant surprises. And remember that it won’t be a run-of-the-mill experience, because as bikers know, your first motorcycle is like your first love: you never forget it. Ever. So choose carefully, listening to your heart and your head. And then get ready for the thrills of the road.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: APRILIA, MOTO GUZZI, DERBI
All the Piaggio Group motorcycle ranges – Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi – offer wonderful models for novice bikers: stylish machines with advanced technological content that are easy and fun to ride. Here is a round-up of models suitable for beginners. Be warned, however, you’ll be spoiled for choice: so the best thing is to go to the dealer and try them all. And the one that gets your heart beating strongest … will be the one for you!

2015 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS:
APRILIA ACROSS THE BOARD

WSBK: APRILIA LEADS THE FIELD AFTER THE THIRD ROUND. DEBUT WITH PODIUM IN SUPERSTOCK. FIRST POINT AND PROGRESS IN MOTOGP

SUPERBIKE: LEON HASLAM FINISHES HIS WEEKEND AT MOTORLAND DE ARAGON ON THE PODIUM. FIFTH AND FOURTH PLACE FOR TEAMMATE JORDI TORRES

Alcaniz (Spain), 12 April 2015 – The weekend at Motorland de Aragon ended with a podium and confirmation of the Rider and Manufacturer second place in the overall standings for Team Aprilia Racing–Red Devils.
After winning Superpole yesterday, Leon Haslam rode his RSV4 to a third-place finish in Race 2, and just missed the podium in Race 1.

During the morning race, the British rider had to deal with the low temperatures the team had already battled with yesterday, which damaged tyre performance, preventing him from keeping up with the lead pack. In the afternoon, on warmer tarmac, Leon started from the pole position earned yesterday and played it safe on the first laps, before pushing to engage in a heated battle with Rea. The gap between the two changed constantly, the sign of a fierce battle, in which Haslam yielded only at the end, bringing home an excellent third place on a track that has never been particularly kind.

Leon Haslam: “I'm really happy about this podium. I knew it wouldn't be easy for us, both because of the low temperatures in Race 1 and because of the greater experience our rivals have on this track. In Race 2, we made a few minor changes to the RSV4, but most of all the different conditions allowed us to be faster. I was disappointed not to have engaged in a close battle with Rea. I was faster than he was in a few spots of the track, but I lost ground in others. I'm confident about the next rounds at Assen and Imola. They are two tracks I like and our improvement this weekend is an excellent starting place. We know what our strong points are and race after race we are gathering fundamental data to improve our performance. I'm sure we'll be able to take advantage of this experience over the rest of the season.”
Another solid race for Jordi Torres, who doesn't seem in the least to feel his status as a rookie on the world champion bike. On his home track, the Spaniard continued working hard to adapt to a new category and familiarise fully with his RSV4 RF. The fifth-place finish in Race 1, but especially the fourth place in Race 2, show his great consistency and growing ease with the Italian superbike.
Jordi Torres: “These were two intense races. With the low temperatures, we made a conservative choice in terms of tyres and in fact, in the second part of the race we kept a good pace. The Race 2 conditions were very different. It took me a few laps to adapt and so I lost contact with the leaders. This is another difficulty of Superbike. Things can change a lot between the two races and it isn't always easy to adjust. In any case, we did a good job this weekend. I earned some important points but above all, I’m gaining experience, learning the secrets of this category. I've changed my riding style a lot, too, and I just need to take that final step, but I am leaving Aragon in an upbeat mood.”
The two previous rounds at the start of the season were also triumphs for Leon Haslam: a win and a second place in the two Australian races at Phillip Island (22 February); double second place in Thailand (22 March), on the Buriram track (making its debut in the WSBK 2015 calendar).

Assen (Netherlands), 19 April 2015 – After the lap record that gave him the pole position, Lorenzo Savadori capitalised on his advantage to win the race on his Aprilia RSV4 RF. Kevin Calia started fifteenth on the grid and climbed his way up to finish in fifth position. Just one lap in, oil on the track sent the red flag up. After the new start, an imperturbable Savadori supported by the Nuova M2 Racing team kept his concentration and repeated a lightening start from the grid. He led the race from the first lap to the last, establishing the lap record and crowning a perfect weekend with victory. A formidable result for the team and for Aprilia, whose RSV4 RF, at its debut in the stock category closest to spec, has already taken a win home after just two races. Savadori left Assen with the number one place in the Rider standings, with Aprilia holding the corresponding position in the Manufacturers standings.

Lorenzo Savadori: “I’m delighted, this win was just what we needed. We’ve worked so hard since the weekend began, at Aragon we were caught out at the last bend of the final lap, but this time I managed to push hard thanks to the excellent tuning of my Aprilia. I kept an excellent pace and in the last three laps built a distance over the riders behind me. Thank you to all my staff, to Aprilia, to Nuova M2 Racing and to the sponsors. And also a special thanks to the mobile clinic who helped me race even though I was running a fever.”
On the first start, Kevin Calia catapulted off the grid and was already in ninth place after just a few bends. He kept his confidence after the red flag, and made an excellent second getaway that took him into eighth place at the first bend. The race was cut down to just nine laps, so there was little time for Kevin to study his rivals. Setting an impressive pace, he performed a series of wonderful passes and came in fifth, confirming the competitiveness of the new Aprilia RSV4 RF. Kevin Calia: “The race went very well, I managed to keep up the rhythm of the early laps. Starting fifteenth on the grid and finishing fifth in a nine-lap sprint was very exciting, and I had a great time. I showed I could keep up with the leaders, so I shall be going to the next race, in Imola, more than determined than ever to fight for the places that count! Thanks as always to the Nuova M2 Racing team, Aprilia and everyone who follows me with such commitment.”

SUPERSTOCK 1000 FIM CUP:
LORENZO SAVADORI SECOND AT HIS DEBUT ON THE RSV4 RF

Alcaniz (Spain), 12 April 2015. Lorenzo Savadori and Nuova M2 Racing brought home an excellent result in the Aprilia RSV4 RF's début in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race. After leading the pack for the entire race, the young Aprilia rider lost the top spot just a few metres from the wire. However, with a second place at his debut, and having shown an excellent level of competitiveness by taking pole position, he has definitely laid the foundation to be a top contender in the championship. So, a great Spanish weekend for Nuova M2 Racing and Aprilia: best lap, pole position and a podium with Salvadori on the RSV4 RF. The Aragon race was the Noale V4’s debut in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, broadening Aprilia’s commitment to motorcycle racing for production-based bikes.

Lorenzo Savadori: “Of course, a win would have been better, even so I’m very happy with second place. The strategies we put together with the team paid off with an excellent race rhythm, enabling us to keep ahead until the last few bends, it wasn’t a problem having a rider so close behind, but on the last lap he managed to overtake me. It was a good opening, we know where we have to work on this new project with Aprilia and Nuova M2 Racing to make this already competitive RSV4-RF even better. I’m looking forward to Assen next week, when we’ll have the chance to even the score. Thanks to Aprilia and Nuova M2 Racing who are working so hard to help me improve my performance!”

MOTOGP: IN AUSTIN, ALVARO BAUTISTA RIDES HIS APRILIA RS-GP TO FIFTEENTH PLACE AND A FIRST POINT IN MOTOGP

Austin (USA), 12 April 2015 – After an upward climb in the first race in Losail, Qatar, at the second MotoGP weekend at the end of March, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini earned their first point of the season, thanks to Alvaro Bautista who, on the spectacular Circuit of the Americas in Austin, rode his RS-GP to a fifteenth place finish. At the wire, the Spaniard was hot on the heels of the two riders ahead of him, giving the impression that he might even have gained a position or two. A positive test received with great satisfaction, as well as an encouragement for the team, which is taking on the 2015 season as a long apprenticeship in the most challenging motorcycle racing category. Marco Melandri got off to a good start, but was hampered and then forced to a DNF due to problems with the gearbox. At the first race in Qatar, Melandri took his Aprilia to the finish, collecting laps, data and sensations that will be important for the growth of the RS-GP.

Romano Albesiano (Aprilia Racing manager): “This is just a small step but it is a really great result, apart from the point earned, which in any case is significant. In a MotoGP that has never been so competitive, it is important that Bautista easily did battle against bikes that are much further along than ours in terms of development and with top-level riders. This is an important encouragement for us in this growth process, which is so difficult at times, but which today began to bear its first fruits.”
Fausto Gresini (Team Manager): “This point is like a podium for us: our priority was to finish the race. We succeeded, and also secured a point, a result we thought would be difficult to achieve before the race, so we are very pleased. Obviously, we know there is still much work to be done, but today we gathered a lot of valuable information and this is the right path to pursue. Too bad about Marco, who was looking good at the beginning of the race. Now we are looking confidently ahead to Argentina, to get some more experience under our belts.”
Alvaro Bautista: “I’m really happy! I managed to deliver my best effort in the race, and brought home our first point. I decided to use the soft compound tyre on the rear and managed to look after it well, not pushing too hard at the beginning and then maintaining the most consistent pace possible. Toward the end I was at the limit, otherwise I would have been able to fight for thirteenth place, but that's OK. Bringing home points wasn't our goal, we simply wanted to finish the race, but we succeeded and we are obviously pleased about it. It was a really positive weekend, the information and useful sensations I gather will let me provide important explanations to the engineers for the coming races. I want to thank the entire team, from the mechs to the engineers who are working hard to continuously improve the bike.”

Marco Melandri: “It's a shame because I got off the line well and was ahead of several other riders. But from the very start I had problems with the gearbox and by the eleventh lap I had to stop. Fortunately we'll be racing again in a week, and I hope the weather will be good all weekend so we can improve.”

OFFICIAL PRESENTATION OF APRILIA RACING 2015: THE VIDEO OF THE EVENT. ROBERTO COLANINNO: THIS SEASON SEES US SUPER BUSY ON THE RACING FRONT

5 March 2015: a date that is already a milestone in Aprilia history. The Sky Italia studios in Milan hosted the official presentation of the 2015 Aprilia Racing teams taking part in the world motorcycle championships: MotoGP, Superbike, Superstock 1000 FIM CUP. Aprilia’s 2015 season in the world speed championships was presented by Piaggio Group Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno, together with Romano Albesiano (Aprilia Racing manager) and the Aprilia V4 riders in the three specialities: Alvaro Bautista and Marco Melandri for MotoGP, Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres for Superbike, and Kevin Calia and Lorenzo Savadori for Superstock.

Aprilia Racing - Presentazione Team 2015
“The 2015 season will see us super busy on the racing front,” commented Roberto Colaninno. “Adding to what is now our traditional presence in Superbike, we shall be racing in the Superstock championship and, above all, Aprilia will be making its debut in MotoGP a year ahead of the previously announced schedule. We are the reigning world champions in Superbike and kicked off the season in the best possible way at the opening Phillip Island round, winning and securing the lead in both the rider and manufacturer standings. MotoGP is the toughest challenge. It will take time, patience and passion. We know this MotoGP season won’t be easy, but Aprilia's technological advances are reaching ever more complex goals and we want to prove our worth in increasingly demanding environments, directly on the racetrack, beginning this year.”

“Races are the maximum expression of technological development for an organisation like ours. They are a laboratory on the track,” added the Piaggio Group number one. “But this is just one of the fronts we are working on. With our brands and product lines, the Piaggio Group is working across the board, to develop new technologies, to meet as yet latent customer needs and to find new forms of interaction between the rider, the vehicle and the surrounding environment. In this work, our ties with universities and international research institutions will be fundamental, as will the relationship we are establishing with SAP.”
The RS-GP, the bike with which Aprilia is making its MotoGP debut, bears the logo of SAP, the European multinational software specialist partnering the Piaggio Group.
MotoGP is the world championship Aprilia has decided to return to in 2015, moving its debut up a year with respect to the initial plans. This is a brave choice, true to the character of one of the most victorious racing divisions in history. In its brief motorsports career – from 1992 to 2014 – Aprilia has won an impressive 54 world title wreaths, of which 28 since 2006 after it joined the Piaggio Group. The Group, meanwhile, boasts an impressive collection of 104 world titles, with the 54 Aprilia wreaths flanked by 21 Derbi titles, 15 Moto Guzzi world titles and 14 Gilera world titles.
Aprilia has skilfully demonstrated its competitiveness in the Superbike challenge, quickly achieving a dominant position with an impressive seven world titles in the last five years. In Superbike, after winning the 2014 Manufacturer and Rider titles in the final round at Doha, Aprilia has already made a formidable showing this year in the two races at Phillip Island, which traditionally open the two-wheel motorsport season. It was an opener worthy of the reigning champion, with the two new Aprilia riders immediately proving their prowess: a first- and a second-place finish for English rider Leon Haslam, who took Aprilia to the top of the Rider and Manufacturer standings; and a fourth-place finish for Spanish rookie Jordi Torres.

MOTOGP, APRILIA’S NEW CHALLENGE

MARCO MELANDRI ALVARO BAUTISTA

Aprilia’s new challenge is called MotoGP, the top world motorcycle championship. The Italian brand decided to make its return in the 2015 season, moving its re-entry up a year with respect to the initial plans. This bold decision is in line with the character of one of the most victorious racing divisions in history. In its brief motorsports career – from 1992 to 2014 – Aprilia has won an impressive 54 world title wreaths, of which 28 since 2006, after joining the Piaggio Group. The manufacturer from Noale has also demonstrated its prowess in the Superbike challenge, quickly rising to a dominant position with seven world titles in the last five years.
Under the Aprilia MotoGP project, the first year – the 2015 season – is entirely devoted to development, even and especially in race conditions, before the track debut of a prototype bike in a Full Factory configuration in 2016. This is an ambitious schedule, but well within the capabilities of the Aprilia Racing designers, engineers and offices in Noale, who in turn have the backing of the R&D centres of the Piaggio Group, one of the major global players in the two-wheeler sector.

Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing manager: “We decided to bring our start date forward, and take the plunge in the 2015 MotoGP world championship because we believe that although this is certainly the riskiest solution, it is the best way to become competitive as quickly as possible. Of course, we could have avoided the pressure and waited until next year, but that's not what Aprilia wanted. In terms of development, we are starting from a solid foundation, the result of our winning experience in Superbike and the ART project, the only CRT that showed potential close to “real” MotoGP bikes. For us this will be a year of testing, development and in some ways even sacrifice, to be taken full advantage of in preparation for 2016, when we’ll be bringing a real Aprilia prototype on to the track. We don’t underestimate the difficulties, but we have everything we need for success: a solid technological platform, a top-shelf racing department and partners supporting us in this new challenge.”

THE RIDERS: MARCO MELANDRI AND ALVARO BAUTISTA

The two riders accompanying the development of the RS-GP are part of Aprilia's victorious history: Italian Marco Melandri, already a world champion on his Aprilia in 2002 (250 class), MotoGP runner-up in 2005 and one of the World Superbike stars in the last four seasons; and Spaniard Alvaro Bautista, world champion in 2006 in the 125 class, on a bike from Noale, and a MotoGP rider for the last five years.
Alvaro Bautista: “I’m excited about this new challenge. It’s a new stimulus and gives me great motivation. We are well aware that we have a lot of work to do and we also know that this will be a season geared to development, so we aren't setting any goals for ourselves except to improve race by race, giving our all. I was very pleased with the first two test sessions in Malaysia. It was great to see so many people working hard to improve the bike and listening to my requests. All of our mechanics are top-notch and have a commitment that creates an excellent atmosphere in the garage. We are all very confident and this is very important to achieve progress and take on this tough challenge in top form.”
Marco Melandri: “Following Aprilia in its ambitious return to MotoGP is a brave choice, especially after the decision to bring the plans forward. I’m highly motivated, confident and I know what this racing department is capable of, although that doesn't change the difficulties we will inevitably have to face. There are also some advantages, like being able to “tailor” the bike to fit me, something I’ve never been able to do before, helping the guys in the development process and giving them my input. For now, it’s just a matter of establishing a feeling with a bike-tyre package that is quite different to the one I used last year. We have a long road ahead of us, but I believe that with patience and determination we'll achieve a good level, realistically in the second half of the season.”

THE PARTNER: GRESINI RACING

L-R: ALVARO BAUTISTA, FAUSTO GRESINI, MARCO MELANDRI

The exciting challenge has been taken on thanks to the partnership with Gresini Racing, a team founded and led by two-time World Champion Fausto Gresini that boasts an extraordinary presence in Grand Prix motorcycle racing, where it has been a key player ever since 1997, with two world titles and 40 race wins.
Gresini Racing is heading into its 19th Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, having secured two world titles (Daijiro Kato in 250 in 2001 and Toni Elias in Moto2 in 2010), 40 GP wins and the MotoGP world champion runner-up title in three consecutive seasons, from 2003 to 2005, with Sete Gibernau and Marco Melandri. Gresini Racing has also been home to champions of the calibre of Alex Barros, Loris Capirossi, Colin Edwards and Marco Simoncelli. Today, the organisation is involved in all the Grand Prix motorcycle racing classes. In fact, they will also be key players in Moto2 and Moto3 in the 2015 season.
Fausto Gresini, Team Manager: “The Piaggio Group has given us an opportunity we couldn’t refuse to work side by side with a manufacturer whose trophy case speaks for itself. This exciting adventure marks a return to the top world motorcycle racing category for Aprilia and opens up an important new chapter for Gresini Racing, but it is a project we have been working on for several months. We want to be as prepared as possible for a challenge that promises to be difficult, but exciting at the same time. I couldn't imagine anything more stimulating for someone like me who lives and breathes racing. I agree one hundred percent with Aprilia's choice to jump straight into the mix. Unquestionably, racing against adversaries who are already extremely competitive is tough, but it is also the quickest way to develop. We can also count on two expert riders we know very well. This is another factor that will help us speed up the growth process. Collaboration with Aprilia opens up new technological possibilities for us. At every Grand Prix race it will be satisfying and exciting to assess the technical innovations available to us and how much progress we are making, the result of the whole team's efforts.”

ALVARO & MARCO WORLD CHAMPIONS ON APRILIA

Aprilia’s return to MotoGP is fronted by riders Marco Melandri and Alvaro Bautista, both with enviable personal track-records, including the world championship titles on Aprilia bikes (Marco in the 250 class, Alvaro in the 125). This clip shows them during the official photo shoot.

2015 Aprilia Racing MotoGP Team – backstage at the shoot‬‬
Alvaro Bautista. A rider with vast experience, Bautista – born in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, on 21 November 1984 – took his first world championship steps astride an Aprilia 125cc in 2002 as a wildcard; his first complete championship season came in 2003 when he was also crowned Spanish champion in the category. He rode yet another Noale bike to victory as world champion in the "eighth litre" class in 2006. In the 250 class, he immediately won two races in his rookie season in 2007, whereas in 2008 he finished as championship runner-up. In his fifth year in the top category, MotoGP, Bautista boasts three podiums and one pole position, and his trophy case totals 16 wins, 33 podiums and 18 pole positions.
Marco Melandri. Born in 1982, Marco Melandri began his career at a very young age in minimoto, winning the Italian championship in 1992 and 1994. Moving to the 125 class, he became Italian champion in 1997, a title that allowed him to debut in the "eighth litre" MotoGP class. Third in 1998 and second in 1999, Marco moved up a category to ride a powerful 250 two-stroke with Aprilia. This was the start of a Melandri-Aprilia partnership, where he finished fifth in the rider standings in 2000, third in 2001 and world champion (with nine wins and two podiums out of 16 races) in 2002. Rising to the premier MotoGP category, Melandri immediately confirmed his competitiveness, finishing in second place in 2005. In the various MotoGP categories, Melandri has won 22 races and been on the podium 62 times. In 2011, Marco Melandri moved over to World Superbike and was immediately a key player, battling for the title in his rookie season, which he finished in second place. Ranking third in the 2012 season, the rider from Ravenna was also a contender for the title in 2013, finishing out the season in fourth place. In SBK, he has taken 19 wins and 31 podiums.

WSBK 2015:
LEON HASLAM AND JORDI TORRES ALREADY TRIUMPHANT ON APRILIA

After the extraordinary 2014 double championship win at Doha crowned the Aprilia RSV4 as the reigning world champion for the 2015 season, Leon and Jordi have their sights set on expanding Aprilia's impressive Superbike trophy case: 7 world titles in 5 years of WSBK racing. At Phillip Island, the great preview for the 2015 motorsport season, Aprilia took its 50th Superbike win and first place in both the Manufacturer and the Rider standings with Haslam
Aprilia WSBK2015 - Phillip Island victory
Milan, 5 March 2015Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres arrived at the official debut of the Aprilia Racing Team with the extraordinary Phillip Island race weekend in February already under their belts. The Australian Superbike round, traditionally the opening event of the motorsport season, brought Aprilia their fiftieth Superbike win and first place in the Manufacturer standings, plus top spot in the Rider standings for Leon Haslam. For Jordi Torres a magnificent fourth-place finish and two heated races were the reward for his maiden race with Aprilia and in SBK.
Aprilia – reigning world champion after winning the 2014 championship with the double Rider-Manufacturer world title taken at the last round in Doha (Qatar) – is ready for the 2015 season with a revamped structure and two new riders making their debut on the Aprilia RSV4, the bike that has dominated WSBK in the last few years. Aprilia's world Superbike trophy case is pretty impressive: 7 world titles in just 5 seasons since 2010. This undisputed supremacy among factory-based bikes has enhanced the global trophy case in the halls of Aprilia which, with 54 world titles in the various motorcycling sports (Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing, Superbike and Off-road) is one of the most successful racing divisions of all time.

In the Aprilia-Red Devils garage, on the number 91 Aprilia RSV4 managed by the engineers headed by Enrico Folegnani, is British rider Leon Haslam, runner-up in the 2010 world championship, who has shown his potential astride the Noale V4 during the winter tests and, above all, by winning the opening race in Australia. On the other side of the garage, under the technical supervision of Lucio Gomes and making his debut in World Superbike, is Spaniard Jordi Torres on the number 81 Aprilia RSV4.

As in 2014, Aprilia's new Superbike season gets underway under the supervision of Romano Albesiano who manages all Piaggio Group racing activities. In a year when Aprilia Racing is doubling its efforts – returning to MotoGP a year ahead of the originally announced schedule – the Project Leader will be Paolo Bonora, while the Aprilia SBK team management structure will be completed by team coordinator Dario Raimondi, and by Andrea Petricca, founder of the Red Devils team.

Aprilia is taking on the 2015 World Superbike season with goals worthy of its triumphant history in the factory-based category. “We're the reigning world champions and have played a key role in recent seasons,” said Romano Albesiano. “There are some variables that could change things on the field, especially in terms of regulations, but we have worked hard to adapt. We have a good pair of riders. Leon is a solid and expert racer, runner-up in the 2010 season, and he has already proved to be fast astride the RSV4. For Jordi the first races will certainly be demanding since he'll be adapting to the new category, but I think he’ll be up among the best within a reasonably short period.”

THE RIDERS: LEON & JORDI

LEON HASLAM

Born in Ealing (UK) on 31 May 1983, Leon Haslam follows in the footsteps of his father, "Rocket" Ron, a Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing rider in the 1980s famous for being quick off the line. After a stint in GP, Leon moved over to Superbike where his best result was a championship second place in 2010, runner-up to Max Biaggi's Aprilia. A fiercely competitive rider with a pure English racing style, in Superbike he boasts a record of four wins and 30 podiums plus one pole position. A factory derivative rookie, Jordi Torres Fernàndez was born in Rubì, Spain, on 27 August 1987. He was crowned Spanish national minimoto champion in 1998 and won the national 125 championship in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, he rode in the Spanish Supersport championship and in 2006 he was a wildcard in the Valencia round of the World Supersport championship. Other appearances in the factory-based world came in 2007 and 2008 as a wildcard in Superstock 1000. He took on the CEV Moto2 in 2010, finishing the season as runner-up, and earned the 2011 and 2012 national title in Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing, again in the Moto2 class. In the same class, he took his first win in 2013, finishing the season in tenth place.

SUPERSTOCK 1000 FIM CUP: SAVADORI AND CALIA ON THE NEW APRILIA RSV4-RF BIKES

Rounding off Aprilia’s commitment in the production-based motorcycle categories, Lorenzo Savadori and Kevin Calia are competing in the 2015 Superstock 1000 FIM CUP championship with the new Aprilia RSV4-RF bikes, for the Nuova M2 Racing Team. This creates a perfect duo of Italian riders on Italian bikes. Lorenzo and Kevin distinguished themselves in 2014 by achieving important results in their championships, Savadori in second place and Calia in third place in, respectively, the Superstock 1000 FIM CUP and the CIV Superbike.

THE RIDERS: KEVIN & LORENZO

Born in 1994, Kevin Calia boasts a respectable collection of titles. Italian and European minimoto champion in 2004, he confirmed the Italian title in 2005 and in 2006 led the field in the Italian MiniGP 50 championship. In 2011, again in the Italian theatre, he finished third in the 125GP category before being crowned Moto3 champion in the 2012 CIV championship. In 2013 and 2014, he took part in the Italian Superbike championship, finishing the seasons in ninth and third place respectively. Another youngster, born in 1993, Lorenzo Savadori was Italian and European 125 champion in 2008, the same season in which he made his debut in the category world championship with three wildcard spots (Mugello, Misano and Valencia). In 2009, he took part in the 125 world championship, finishing the season in 26th place with 7 championship points. His rookie year in the factory-based world came in 2011 in the Superstock 1000 championship, where he finished as runner-up last season.

APRILIA

GRAMIGNI, BIAGGI, CAPIROSSI, ROSSI, MELANDRI, LORENZO, STONER, POGGIALI, SIMONCELLI, BAUTISTA, SAKATA, TALMACSI

Aprilia has a unique track record, built up in a very brief racing history: the crown jewel in the history of Piaggio Group sports victories, it is one of the most victorious brands in motorcycle racing with an astonishing 54 world titles. These are the championship wreaths Aprilia has won since 1992: 38 titles in Grand Prix motorcycle racing (20 in 125 and 18 in 250); 7 titles in Superbike (Rider and Manufacturer in 2010, Rider and Manufacturer in 2012, Manufacturer in 2013, Rider and Manufacturer in 2014); 9 titles in the Off-Road disciplines (7 Supermoto and 2 Trial). In Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing, Aprilia has won an impressive 294 Grand Prix races and 50 in Superbike (with another 109 podiums). All of this in a short space of time, since Aprilia is a young brand that made its MotoGP debut in 1985 (250 class) and in 1987 in 125. Its first victories came in 1987 (250 at Misano with Loris Reggiani) and in 1991 in the 125 class with Alessandro Gramigni, who in 1992 became the first MotoGP world champion in the 125 class on an Aprilia.
Above all, Aprilia Racing has always been a unique school for talent. Almost all the great names in motorcycle racing history of the last few decades have made their debut, raced and won with motorbikes from Noale. Names such as Max Biaggi, with three 250 world titles with Aprilia from 1994 to 1996, Loris Capirossi (250 world champion with Aprilia in 1998), Valentino Rossi (125 world champion in 1997 and 250 in 1999), Marco Melandri (250 world champion in 2002, second place in MotoGp in 2005), Jorge Lorenzo (250 world champion in 2006 and 2007), Casey Stoner (250 runner-up in 2005), as well as Manuel Poggiali, Marco Simoncelli, Alvaro Bautista, Kazuto Sakata.
Aprilia also has an impressive World Superbike record: 7 world titles in just 5 seasons since 2010, with the formidable RSV4, ridden by: Max Biaggi, the first Italian rider to win the WSBK title (rider crown and manufacturer title for Aprilia in 2010); a repeat in 2012 for the Biaggi/Aprilia duo (with the rider and manufacturer WSBK titles). In 2013, Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli secured the manufacturer title for Aprilia. And 2014 was a wonderful season with another double victory: manufacturer title for Aprilia and rider title for Guintoli.

Aprilia world champion riders in the Off Road disciplines are Tommi Ahvala (Trial, 1992), Jerome Giraudo (2004), Thierry Van Den Bosch (2006) and Adrien Chareyre (2011) in Supermoto.

DERBI

NIETO, MARTINEZ ASPAR, CHAMPI HERREROS, DI MEGLIO, SHEENE, CRIVILLE’, MARQUEZ

Derbi was established in Catalonia in 1922, by Simeòn Rabasa Singla. Initially, it was a small bicycle repair shop. After the Second World War, Derbi began factory production of the first mopeds. Its decision to enter the racing world was a strategic and long-term move.
In more than forty years of racing, the Balas Rojas (red bullets), as the Spanish fans christened the high-speed Derbi bikes, have won 107 Grand Prix world championship races, for an extraordinary total of 21 world titles: 9 manufacturer and 12 rider titles.

Ángel Nieto - The Legend
Many great champions have raced with Derbi, some winning world titles: Angel Nieto (5-time world champion on a Derbi), Jorge Martinez “Aspar” (4-time world champion), Manuel “Champi” Herreros (1) and Mike Di Meglio (1). Other riders such as the unforgettable Barry Sheene and Alex Crivillè began their career with Derbi, going on to become world champions in the top class.

BRNO, 1989, HERREROS WORLD CHAMPION ON DERBI
The most recent young champion to ride the historic Catalonia brand to victory was Marc Marquez, the current reigning MotoGP world champion. In 2010, Marquez dominated the last 125 class season (flanked by Derbi teammate Pol Espargarò), winning 10 races and 12 pole positions, to be crowned 125 world champion and securing the manufacturer title for Derbi.

MOTO GUZZI

RUFFO, LOMAS, LORENZETTI, ANDERSON, CAMPBELL, GALFETTI

On 15 March 1921, the "Società Anonima Moto Guzzi" company was established in Genoa, for the "manufacture and sale of motorcycles and any other activity pertinent or connected to the metalworking industry". The founding partners were renowned Genoese shipowner Emanuele Vittorio Parodi, his son Giorgio and his friend Carlo Guzzi. Guzzi was a former comrade of Parodi’s in the Italian Air Force, as was another friend, aviator Giovanni Ravelli, who died during a test flight on 11 August 1919. The choice of the spread-winged eagle in the Moto Guzzi logo was in memory of Ravelli.
The company’s first motorcycle was the legendary Normale, with 8 Hp, followed by such successful models as the Guzzi G.T. in 1928, dubbed “Norge” after the expedition to the Polar Arctic Circle, and the Airone 250 (1939), Italy's best-selling medium-capacity bike for more than 15 years. Moto Guzzi also made its name in motorcycle racing: the first victory was the prestigious Targa Florio trophy in 1921, which launched an impressive series of triumphs: when the company withdrew from racing in 1957, its trophy case included 15 world speed titles and 11 Tourist Trophies.
The motorcycling legends who have won the world champion’s wreath with the eagle brand are Bruno Ruffo (twice in the 250 class), Bill Lomas (twice in 350), Enrico Lorenzetti (250), Fergus Anderson (twice in 350), Keith Campbell (350). They were flanked by seven manufacturer world titles.
In 1950, Moto Guzzi installed a state-of-the-art wind tunnel in Mandello del Lario, the first constructor in the world to do so (in the same year Aurelio Galfetti won the Swiss Championship of Speed on Moto Guzzi 250cc and 500cc). The racing division was a team of brilliant minds, with engineers such as Umberto Todero and Enrico Cantoni, and a designer who would become a legend: Milan-born Giulio Cesare Carcano, the creator of the 1956 Guzzi Otto Cilindri 500. This futuristic project is a milestone in motorcycle technical history with its sophisticated technical solutions and 285 km/h top speed.

GILERA

SERAFINI, MASETTI, DUKE, LIBERATI, POGGIALI, SIMONCELLI

Gilera traces its roots back to the early 1900s: the first bike to bear the name, the VT 317, was built in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera. In the post-war period, Gilera produced 500cc bikes with which it won the top international competitions. 1936 was the year of the Rondine, a racing bike ahead of its time with a compressor and an in-line four-cylinder 500cc engine, which took Dorino Serafini to victory in the 1939 European Championship.
After the war, Gilera returned to the racetrack, where its new four-cylinder 500 bikes dominated the MotoGP class, engaging in epic duels with Norton, Moto Guzzi and MV Agusta, and winning six rider titles between 1950 and 1957 with Umberto Masetti (1950 and 1952), Geoff Duke (three world titles between 1953 and 1955) and Libero Liberati (1957). Over the years, it also won six manufacturer world titles, three Tourist Trophies and seven Italian titles. Before retiring from racing in 1957, Gilera had won 40 world Grand Prix races.
Having joined the Piaggio Group in 1969, Gilera returned to the world championship in 2001, in the 125 class, ridden to victory by the young Manuel Poggiali from San Marino, who was crowned world champion and secured the thirteenth championship title for the two-ring brand. In 2006, after Aprilia’s entry into the Piaggio Group, Gilera returned to the 250 class with a very young Marco Simoncelli. The 2008 season brought Gilera’s first victory in the 250 class: Marco Simoncelli won the Italian GP in Mugello and repeated his triumph at the subsequent GP in Barcelona. He also won the German, Japanese and Australian GPs and a third place in the Malaysia GP made him 250 world champion. Once again an Italian rider was world champion with Gilera, 51 years after Libero Liberati. Marco completed his triumphant season with an authoritative win at the last race, in Valencia, when his no. 58 Gilera appeared in a special livery to celebrate the brand’s centenary.

USA, FLORIDA:
APRILIA AND MOTO GUZZI AT
DAYTONA BIKE WEEK 2015

A not-to-be missed date for bikers across the Atlantic, which this year held its 74th annual edition, “Daytona Bike Week” proudly describes itself as “the world’s largest motorcycle event.” This may or may not be the case; what is certain is that the week-long event is an opportunity to get up close and personal with the best motorcycles in the world, and take them for a test drive. Two very Italian names were there, of course, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi: the two brands showed the top models in their respective offers on two large stands, with shops offering bike and rider accessories, as well as the new product entries for 2015, winning a warm response from the American public.

To each his own style and bike: the models on show ranged from the gutsy Aprilia RSV4 RF, Tuono V4 1100 Factory and Caponord 1200 Rally to the magnificent Moto Guzzi California 1400, V7 II (in the Racer, Stone and Special versions, with special customisation kits from the eagle brand) and the Audace and Eldorado.

In line with tradition, the Bike Week was held in mid-March (6 to 15) in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida, promoted by the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce. A celebration of engines and a paradise for bikers, the event offers displays of models from the top international constructors and brands, entertainment (competitions to design the bike for the 2015 edition and the logo for next year’s edition, the 75th), contests (with a motorbike for a lucky winner), concerts and shows. Plus technical, insurance and after-sales services, in true American pragmatic spirit. The presence of Aprilia and Moto Guzzi, coordinated by Piaggio Group Americas, was certainly appreciated by the public and the media at an event traditionally dominated by US names.
Now it’s time to wait for the 2016 edition of Daytona Bike Week. The logo is ready, the dates are being finalised.

ROME, MOTODAYS 2015

A SEA OF ADMIRERS FOR APRILIA WSBK RIDERS HASLAM AND TORRES

Fresh from the success of the WSBK season’s first race, in Australia, the Aprilia World SBK riders Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres had top billing at the MOTODAYS 2015 show in Rome, at the Fiera Roma exhibition centre, from 5-8 March. Aprilia Racing came to Motodays at the head of both the Rider and the Manufacturer rankings. The Rome show was a great opportunity for riders Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres to celebrate the start of the 2015 World SBK championship, which took off with a triumph for Aprilia. On the Australian track, British rider Haslam rode to victory on his Aprilia RSV4, the reigning world champion motorbike that has dominated recent WSBK seasons since 2010, with seven world titles (3 rider and 4 manufacturer). Making his debut on the Italian V4, Haslam regained his competitiveness; his young companion Jordi Torres, at his first-ever SBK appearance, also turned in a good performance.

Aprilia Motodays 2015

Motodays 2015 was also an opportunity for Aprilia fans to discover the new sports models from the Noale manufacturer: the RSV4 RF (a road version of the SBK bike), the Tuono V4 1100 Factory and the brand new super-accessorised Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally, the star of the “tester for a day” initiative. Visitors sat astride the bike as the hostess took a photo for publication on their Facebook pages.
Crowds of adults and youngsters queued up to take selfies on the racing RSV4s, preferably together with riders Leon and Jordi. Dominated by the imposing Racing SBK truck, the Aprilia stand attracted large numbers of fans. Surrounded by admirers, Haslam and Torres signed autographs on their official photos for hours on end over the three days from Friday to Sunday.

The youngest fans could hardly believe they were actually meeting and chatting to the riders. An unforgettable experience to share with their friends on social media. On the afternoon of Saturday 7, the neighbouring stage hosted the presentation of the Aprilia Racing Red Devils team, with the SBK 2015 riders and motorbikes. For the huge public flocking to the Rome show (145,000 visitors), the Aprilia exhibit was not just a stand, but a celebration of the passion for racing, sport and the engines of one of the world’s most successful brands.
ANNIVERSARY
1950-2015: 65 YEARS OF RACING MIGHT

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GILERA SATURNO SANREMO!

The Sanremo series was developed from the Saturno Competizione and owes its name to its victorious debut on the Ligurian race-track in the spring of 1947. The 1950 version was the most successful racer of the series, with the largest number of wins. For five years running, it won the Ospedaletti championship, held, on and off, until 1972; the Ospedaletti road track was known initially as the Sanremo circuit (four kilometres of the Aurelia highway between the two towns on the Ligurian Riviera, in Italy). The Gilera Saturno Sanremo also won the Nations Grand Prix in Milan. The bike is still highly sought after by collectors, as far afield as South America. Opportunities to see this two-wheeler in action are provided by vintage vehicle races, with special categories for veteran two-wheelers from the 1950s. One of the most keenly followed international competitions is the vintage motorcycle championship organised by the Swiss association FHRM (Freunde Historischer Renn-Motorräder - Friends of historic racing bikes) and the Fédération Suisse Motocycliste (FMS). The next event, the “Marchaux Ascent” on the Enclos circuit in Levier, France, will be held on June 6 – 7, 2015.

The Gilera Sanremo fuel tank has hollows for the rider’s knees and a partial half-moon shaped rear mudguard. The central front brake has two small cooling holes. The steel front fork and steel frame mounts are diamond-section steel tube, while the rear half-moon mudguard partially covers the drive wheel. With an engine power output of 35-36 bhp, this bike reaches a top speed of 180 km/h.

PARTY-TIME IN MANDELLO DEL LARIO
TO THE ROAR OF VINTAGE GUZZI BIKES

The weekend of 14-15 March was an unforgettable two days in Mandello del Lario, the home of the eagle brand, with a spectacular parade of vintage Moto Guzzi motorbikes. The “pretext” was the company’s 94th birthday, and the party mood infected everyone, organisers, public and Guzzi biker clubs like the Mandello del Lario Moto Guzzi Club. It’s not every day you see a procession of some of the most important and some very rare models from the great history of Moto Guzzi: vintage motorbikes, sidecars, racing bikes, the legendary Galletti, the Moto Guzzi Trophy two-wheelers, prototypes and models with dustbin fairings, all were cheered on their way by the watching public.
The event, organised by the “Giorgio Ripamonti” association, was an exciting prospect for all keen bikers. The kick-off was on Saturday afternoon in the “De Andrè” cinema, for a showing of the “Il vento” animation, and a link with musician Grant Beardsley in the UK, who composed the music, and with Brazil, followed by a commemoration in live streaming to remember drivers and test drivers from the past. Those taking part included Enrico Cantoni, Vittorino Corti, Graziano Trincavelli, Luciano Gazzola, Renato Pasini, Mathias Auth from Germany, and Christel Naveau from Belgium, wife of the late Herman, a great follower of the Eagle, whose bike has been donated to the Guzzi Museum.
On Sunday morning, everyone met up along Viale della Costituzione for the parade of vintage motorcycles, which included the Moto Guzzi Trophy Riders Group. Among the magnificent bikes taking part was a Guzzi 4V 500 from 1926, a Condor 500 from 1939, a Dondolino 500 from 1948, and a Guzzi twin-cylinder 500 from 1951.
The procession was opened by the pre-war motorcycles including a Norge from 1930 and a 4 Valve 500 from 1925. Then came the sidecars, with a Super Alce from 1953 and a 500 Astore from 1951. They were followed by some of the protagonists of the great Milan-Taranto road race held from 1937 to 1940, and again after the war from 1950 to 1956. The roll of honour included Duilio Agostini, winner of the 1953 race.

HISTORICAL VIDEO: AGOSTINI WINS THE
MILAN-TARANTO RACE

A newsreel report on the 1953 race, when Duilio Agostini beat favourite Bruno Francisci: the pre-dawn start, shots of some of the more athletic riders “stretching” their legs, and Agostini crossing the finishing line in Taranto after 1,300 km in the saddle.

Great applause for the nippy Galletti and for the Guzzi Trophy bikes. One of these was ridden by Angelo Tenconi, born in 1934, a specialist in racing ascents, seven-times Italian champion and five-times European champion. Then came Stornelli, prototypes, vintage racing bikes. Well-known personalities associated with the eagle brand included Enrico Cantoni, Giulio Cesare Carcano and Umberto Todero. A “roaring” celebration enjoyed by devotees of all ages. The next date is 2016 for the 95th birthday!

ROME: FORMER GLORIES AT MOTODAYS 2015

This gallery shows some of the “vintage beauties” seen at Motodays 2015, in the Vintage pavilion at the Fiera di Roma exhibition centre and around the stands. Visitors admired splendid classic Moto Guzzi motorcycles, such as the V7 with sidecar on the State Police stand, and the red Falcone from 1960 on display on the stand of the Fire Brigade motoclub. Another attraction was the “Three royal eagles” exhibit, with photos of races from bygone years and three extraordinary racing bikes from the 1950s on the red carpet: the Moto Guzzi 500 twin-cylinder from 1951, the single-cylinder dual-shaft 350 from 1956 and the 8-cylinder 500 from 1957.

THE BEST TRAVELLING COMPANION
THE APRILIA CAPONORD 1200 RALLY IN SARDINIA

Imagine a motorbike designed for tourism. Now imagine a marvellous island, the second-largest in the Mediterranean after Sicily. Then get ready for a tour on the saddle of the new super-technological crossover

One of the most geologically ancient landmasses in the Mediterranean, where it is a central mooring, over the centuries Sardinia has been inhabited or invaded by countless populations: Phoenicians and Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, not to mention pirates. Important archaeological traces remain of every age and every civilization, another good reason for visiting the island in addition to its beautiful and varied landscapes, with rocky coastlines and sandy beaches, and an interior where many places are still in their original “wild” state. The ideal way to see the island is on a motorbike, and the ideal motorbike is the new Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally, a tourer by vocation that breaks down the boundaries of paved roads to become a truly versatile companion for any journey: the daily commute, weekend excursions and tourism.

EMOTION, RIDING COMFORT, CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY. Hard bags, semi-active suspensions and all the electronic controls featured on latest-generation Aprilia bikes, plus Cruise Control (aCC) and a set of attractive and practical accessories. The new Caponord 1200 Rally qualifies as one of the milestones in the history of Aprilia. Its goal? To deliver an exciting experience by offering riding pleasure, loading capability, comfort and an uncompromising look.
Many technical details distinguish the Rally from the Caponord 1200. Its base, however, is the highly successful 90° V-twin 1,197 cc twin-spark engine, with 52 mm butterfly valves. Maximum power is 125 hp, torque is 114.7 Nm. The new exhaust resonators – also available as retrofits for older Caponord 1200 bikes – improve the torque curve at low revs for smoother distribution, an added bonus for tourism. Three riding maps are offered: Touring and Sport at full power, and Rain at 100 hp. Changes have been made to the chassis: the mixed-structure tubular steel front frame fastened to a pair of die-cast aluminium side plates is the same, but the bike features a 19” front wheel” (17” on the Caponord 1200), with a 3” rim and 120/70 tyre. The rear wheel is a 170/70 R17 on a 4.5″ rim, but for riders who want to exploit the off-road attitude of the Rally other front and rear wheel sizes have been type approved.

BASE IN IS MOLAS. The larger, 24-litre fuel tank provides the capacity to take on Sardinia’s variegated roads with longer intervals between fuel stops. The fairways of the Is Molas Golf Resort in Pula, a few miles along the south-west coast from Cagliari, is the ideal starting point: a few hours to relax, to sample some of the tempting local dishes, and then it’s time to load your luggage on the Caponord 1200 Rally. The hard bags with aluminium side panels are roomy, easy to open and close, and perfect for storing everything you need for a long excursion, beginning with waterproofs (we’ll meet rain during our tour, but it won’t be a problem with the trusty Aprilia!).

Pula
RIDE THE WAY YOU WANT, AND STAY CONNECTED. Press the ignition, the syncopated roar of the twin-cylinder fills the air. A couple of minutes is all it takes to become familiar with the Rally’s standard electronics. They include the indispensable cruise control (aCC), traction control (aTC), ABS and above all the semi-active suspension system (aDD – Aprilia Dynamic Damping). The three-way adjustable traction control offers practical automatic regulation when the tyres are changed; it can be shut off, and also features a sophisticated algorithm providing a double threshold of intervention for each level to allow a certain amount of wheelspin for increased feel and performance. The Aprilia Dynamic Damping system delivers semi-active suspension management: intervention on the hydraulic system is complete, with the solenoid valve – used instead of much slower electric actuators – ensuring a rapid hydraulic response from the suspension, thanks to Aprilia patented technology.
Another exclusive on the Caponord 1200 Rally is the Active Shock Absorber, with automatic damping control and four electronically adjustable preload settings (rider only, rider and passenger, rider and panniers, full load). All you need do is slip your smartphone with the Aprilia Multimedia Platform iPhone app into the special holder, to have map and travel information, as well as interesting data such as lean angle, route, nearest fuel stations, at hand. At all times, in all weathers and on any road, the rider is sure of the best combination of performance and comfort. Does it get any better?

SPRING RAIN AND UNSPOILED VIEWS.

Santa Margherita di Pula and the beautiful Chia beach are only a few miles from the starting point, but who can resist a stopover to savour the wonders of the unspoiled landscape. Then off again, heading for Teulada. Water in all directions, rain and sea. Spring is a notoriously unpredictable season: a chance to try out the ability of the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally to shelter you against bad weather. The height-adjustable windscreen provides almost full protection, even in a downpour. In the meantime, you can enjoy the features of the new Rally: the 19” front wheel makes for smooth, friendly, easy riding from the very first mile. An immediate feeling is established, even on wet roads, when the impeccable aDD semi-active suspension system comes into its own: the balance it gives the bike allows the rider to concentrate on driving, or to proceed at minimum throttle to admire the views along the coast road and the landmarks of the past like the ancient watch towers in southern Sardinia.
The travelling spirit of the Caponord 1200 Rally is ever present: from the almost upright riding position, with arms well extended to the broad handlebar, to the intuitive handlebar switches where you can adjust the electronic settings. This new Aprilia is comfortable, for the rider and the passenger, even when it rains. A glorious rainbow brings the day to a close on the way back to Is Molas. And tomorrow, back in the saddle to enjoy the riding experience of the new Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally once again. A stylish and reliable travelling companion. A bike that really will go anywhere. No limits!
