MOTO GUZZI V9:
AUTHENTIC SOUL

MOTO GUZZI'S MOTORCYCLE RANGE EXPANDS WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE V9, A TOTALLY NEW MID-SIZE CUSTOM BIKE, WHICH COMES IN TWO VERSIONS WITH DISTINCT STYLES AND CHARACTER.

Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber and Roamer

THE V9 ROAMER TAKES THE BATON HANDED OFF BY THE NEVADA AND COMES ON THE SCENE AS THE ELEGANT AND UNIVERSAL CUSTOM.

THE V9 BOBBER REPRESENTS THE BOLD AND ESSENTIAL SOUL OF THE V9. BOTH STAND OUT FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY OF THEIR COMPONENTS AND FOR THE HIGH GRADE FINISHES.

THE V9 ROAMER AND THE V9 BOBBER ARE MOTO GUZZI'S EASY CRUISERS, LIGHT, AGILE AND BUILT FOR EXCITEMENT, LIKE ALL MOTO GUZZIS, AT MANDELLO DEL LARIO. THE V9 SEES THE DÉBUT OF THE NEW 850 CC TWIN CYLINDER EURO 4 ENGINE, WHOSE UNPRECEDENTED TORQUE, SMOOTHNESS AND RESPONSIVENESS IMPROVE THE RIDE OF THE TWO ITALIAN CRUISERS: EXTRAORDINARY IN LINE WITH THE MOTO GUZZI TRADITION.

Custom motorcycles are nothing new in nearly a century of Moto Guzzi history. Indeed this segment includes some of the most famous, best loved and biggest selling Mandello bikes, of which the California is the undisputed queen. Following in the tradition and the success of this 1971 model, Moto Guzzi designed and built mid-sized models, which met the demands of a growing range of users. These included the V35 Custom from 1979, later replaced by the better looking V50, in turn replaced by the V65 Florida, and then the famous and appreciated Nevada, launched in 1989 on the basis of the proven V75 1985. This continues all the way down to 2007 with the modern and stylish Bellagio.
Three essential features, deriving from a unique motorcycle culture, are common to all generations of custom Moto Guzzis:
- This is the highly personal design, in which the special and unique engine configuration plays a decisive stylistic role, always the focus of attention, as well as the sinuous tank and low exhaust pipes;
- the legendary transversal V-twin engine, introduced in 1967;
- Riding pleasure in all conditions, granted by the recognised superior riding qualities all Moto Guzzis that have captured the hearts of generations of users on roads around the world.
That same motorcycle culture inspires the two new Moto Guzzi motorcycles. V9 Roamer is a universal easy and intuitive custom, beautiful to show off and rewarding to ride, full of unique details and outstanding finishes. The V9 Bobber expresses an altogether darker and more nocturnal soul. It has large tyres and as a total black look. The new V9s come in two models with very different personalities, one sunnier and more classic, the other more mysterious and sporty, a distinction introduced by Moto Guzzi in 2012 with the California 1400 Touring and its Custom version and, more recently, continued with the arrival of the Eldorado and Audace.

YOU CAN FEEL THE QUALITY

With such explicit references to style and technology recurrent throughout the history of Moto Guzzi, the new V9 could only be beautiful, fun and safe. In particular, Moto Guzzi has focused its greatest efforts on the definition of a design that would enhance the sculptural forms of the new twin-cylinder 850 made in Mandello. In addition, attention was paid to perceived quality: Exceptional care has gone into the finish and components on the V9 Roamer and V9 Bobber. They represent a new way of conceiving the medium-sized motorcycle. Touching the surfaces, we can feel the wide use of high quality materials such as steel and aluminium, while plastic parts are reduced to a minimum. The metal teardrop fuel tank on both V9s, with its 15-litre capacity, is finished with a fine coating with the Moto Guzzi logo on top, protected by clear varnish. The front and rear fenders are also made of metal. The side panels, petrol cap and brake and clutch levers, however, are made of lightweight aluminium. The new and ergonomic electric blocks also have housings made of aluminium, as are the rider's forged footrests. The steel exhaust manifolds are protected by a second tube, which, by creating an air cavity, helps to lower the heat emitted and preserve the outer surfaces.
The welds of the new frame and the quality of its paintwork are immaculately finished, as are the meticulous details of the new 90° transverse V-twin engine, not only in terms of the casting but also the matt black that brings out the Moto Guzzi branding milled on the aluminium cylinder head covers. It pays to look at the intimate details of these two motorcycles, their touch conveying the entire construction tradition and culture so typical of the best Moto Guzzi models.

V9 ROAMER: MOTO GUZZI’S COSMOPOLITAN CUSTOM

Versatility has always been a key factor in the success of custom Moto Guzzis. Guzzi enthusiasts have ridden the big California as well as the small Nevada down busy city streets and, with a few changes for luggage, on long and adventurous journeys. The new V9 Roamer picks up on the legacy of the legendary Nevada 750, still in the range with appropriate updates for over 20 years. Glamorous, easy, convenient and rewarding to ride, like all Moto Guzzis, the V9 Roamer is the Italian custom bike dedicated to the citizens of the world. The Centro Stile Piaggio Group developed the design, with input from the PADC (Piaggio Advanced Design Center) in Pasadena (California), the birthplace of motorcycle trends that then spread worldwide.

The V9 Roamer is a superb combination of a classic and essential style with high-level finishings, showing off the unique architecture of the new 850 twin-cylinder. Great care has gone into the details of the new wheel rims (19" front and 16" rear) painted in matt black and treated with a diamond-cut finish, as well as the new multi-function digital dashboard with a single circular dial. On board comfort is provided by a comfortable and relaxed riding position, which is nevertheless active and suited to making the most of the riding qualities of the V9 Roamer. The long padded saddle, decorated with the Moto Guzzi logo stitched with grey thread has a ground clearance of just 785 mm and is combined with a raised chrome handlebar and the correct placement of the footrests. This triangulation thus offers all bikers riding comfort, ease of handling of the vehicle when stationary and feeling during dynamic riding. The V9 also upholds Moto Guzzi's successful tradition of keeping the overall weight to a minimum. If the V7 II and California 1400 are already among the lightest bikes in their respective segments. The V9's 199 kg kerb weight is a true record for its class. The reduced mass, combined with the V9 Roamer's superb riding quality and great low-end torque offered by the new 850 two-cylinder, gives feeling, handling and unique riding pleasure. The V9 Roamer is a true mid-size light motorcycle, not just for people who love and know Moto Guzzi motorcycle culture, but also those who have always loved the design of custom motorcycles, but have never bought one because of the weight and poor handling of almost all models in the sector.

V9 BOBBER: MOTO GUZZI HAS CREATED A NEW SEGMENT

The name V9 Bobber evokes concepts such as its essential line, pure design and thus a certain original sporting content, underlined by a total matt black look. Moto Guzzi's custom sports bike effectively creates the mid-size bobber series segment, in which the V9 is currently the only representative. Bobbers appeared in the United States after World War II, built by passionate riders who stripped away all details superfluous to their goal of running fast on dirt tracks. To compete in these conditions the riders used to mount oversized tyres, giving the bikes a wide footprint. In line with this style, the V9 Bobber abandons any chrome plating and glossy finish for matt black details.

The side panels and fuel tank are thus pitch black, with just a few graphic details in yellow or matt red. The exhaust unit, mirrors and both metal mudguards are painted in dark matt. The mudguard has been carefully shortened and reduced in size, so as well as including a very compact optical unit, makes a big contribution to the minimal look of the V9 Bobber. The matt black rims, both 16-inch, are finely decorated with the Moto Guzzi logo in grey, and fit larger tyres (130/90 front, 150/80 rear). Even with these spectacular tyres and distinctive design, the bike still maintains characteristics of exceptional riding pleasure and handling. Indeed the V9 Bobber is a true Moto Guzzi, and as such does not trade rideability for beauty. The V9 Bobber also differs from the V9 Roamer with its more crouched and sporty riding position, guaranteed by the low drag bar painted black and the long, lowered saddle. The ground clearance of the latter is only 780 mm, and if you add to this the exceptionally low total kerb weight of 199 kg, it is not hard to imagine the level of comfort, control and riding pleasure the V9 Bobber provides.

NEW 850 TWIN-CYLINDER MOTO GUZZI

The V9 Roamer and the V9 Bobber have a new powerplant, built as always at the Moto Guzzi Mandello del Lario plant. This is of course a 90° transverse V-twin air and oil cooled engine, a set-up used in all current Moto Guzzi engines, albeit with different engine capacities and performance, able to ensure excellent riding dynamics and a unique sound. It was developed with the explicit aim of maximising torque and elasticity, key aspects for ensuring riding pleasure and fun on the road. Starting from the bottom of the engine, the new aluminium crankcase stiffened at the key points, has a new oil pan and an inertia calibrated crankshaft for liveliness and the correct engine braking. Inside the lubrication system is designed to dispose of the greater heat capacity and reduce power absorption to the benefit of both performance and fuel consumption. The ventilation system reduces power loss due to pumping within the crank chambers and a new low flow oil pump that absorbs less power. The oil pump intake duct is new, as well as the related bypass valve; New piston cooling oil jets were also introduced, fitted with a control valve and flow management. The alternator cover is also new and now includes the blow-by gas output.

In the upper part of the engine, the thermodynamics are completely new. Aluminium heads, pistons and cylinders are designed to make the most of the engine's characteristics. Its cubic capacity is obtained due to bore and stroke values of 84x77 mm. Timing is controlled by a rods and rockers system and uses 2 valves per cylinder arranged at an angle in the head. The fuel supply uses a one-piece Marelli electronic injection system. The electronic engine control unit is new. Of note is the presence in the entrance heads of the auxiliary air system, which, combined with the three-way catalytic converter, the double oxygen sensor and the total redesign of the engine, bring the twin 850 Moto Guzzi into compliance with Euro 4 standards. The unit is capable of 62 Nm of torque at just 3,000 rpm, with a maximum power of 55 HP at 6,250 rpm, figures that show Moto Guzzi's commitment to achieving high levels of torque even at low rpms. This engine boasts surprising character and responsiveness, which contribute to a really exciting riding experience. A version with limited power is available, in line with the limitations of the A2 license and ideal for new Guzzi riders, who can also enjoy a record low total weight and the general ease of riding of both V9 versions.
Another innovative aspect of the 850 Moto Guzzi engine is the 170 mm diameter single dry plate clutch, providing a perfect transmission of torque and power with no jerkiness or hesitation. This increases robustness and reliability over time and decreases the load on the handlebar lever, for better controllability and riding comfort. The six-speed gearbox is new, precise and with a soft clutch, which benefits from unprecedented ratios that make the most of the torque and engine power. The final transmission is carried out by a new double-jointed drive shaft offset by the increased size and the new bevel gear, which provides solid and reliable management of the powerful torque supplied by the twin engine. The cast aluminium swingarm has been designed and sized to support engine performance, as well as to accommodate the new 150 mm tyre.

CHASSIS ARCHITECTURE: THE QUALITY OF THE MOTO GUZZI TRADITION

Carlo Guzzi was probably the first to understand the importance of a frame able to exploit the full potential of the engine and a suspension unit that responds perfectly to the imperfections in the road surface. Indeed, the Norge GT of 1928 was the first motorcycle with a "spring frame", equipped with front and rear suspension, bringing enormous advantages in terms of safety and riding pleasure. The Moto Guzzi tradition is full of models recognised for their excellent ride qualities: in terms of custom motorcycles, we should really mention the California, which in 1970, under the name V7 Police, was bought by the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) after a series of tough tests.

On the back of this tradition, Moto Guzzi now builds motorcycles like the V7 II and the fleet of the big 1400s, which are real benchmarks in terms of handling in their respective segments. The V9 is the latest jewel from Moto Guzzi for riding pleasure and effectiveness. The new steel twin tube cradle frame, creates optimum weight distribution on the front and rear of the engine, thereby providing the rideability and dynamic balance typical of all motorcycles built at Mandello del Lario. The designers paid special attention to the front, which has gussets in the steering head and new slope and trail abilities, making for a superb ride with the perfect combination of handling and stability, as well as precision and feeling. In addition, the entire structure benefited from painstaking care and finishing of the details, including the welding and paintwork.

The suspension is also new, using traditional long-travel (130 mm) inverted forks and a new pair of spring preload adjustable shock absorbers connected to the frame, which provide a gradual and controlled response at all times. The braking system is customised for the V9: the front end adopts a new master cylinder and a Brembo opposed 4-piston calliper that grips a 320 mm steel disc; the rear mounts a 260 mm disc and a two-piston floating calliper operated by a master cylinder with built-in reservoir.

EQUIPMENT: ALL FOR SAFETY AND RIDING PLEASURE

Like all recent Moto Guzzis, the V9 also has a full set of advanced electronic systems, placed very discreetly inside the vehicle, making riding safer and easier. The motorcycles come with a standard advanced two-channel ABS, non-invasive in normal riding, but that prevent the wheels from locking when really needed and the well-known MGCT (Moto Guzzi Traction Control), Moto Guzzi's advanced traction control integrated with the electronic engine management system and adjustable in two different levels of operation and that can be deactivated, ensuring better grip of the rear tyre on any road surface, reducing engine torque if necessary through a reduction of the advance of the engine. Other standard features include an immobiliser and USB port located under the steering head, useful for charging external devices.

The new electronic instrumentation, made up of a single circular dial, is also consistent with the style of the two the V9s. The speedometer has an analogue dial, while all other information is contained in the digital box: odometer, partial trip and daily trip (with automatic reset after eight hours after shutdown), the trip time, instantaneous and average fuel consumption, clock, outside temperature, average speed, MGCT level, in addition to the gear position and shift indicator, whose idle and maximum value can be adjusted by the user. In this way the rider can keep a check on a determined range of engine revolutions, for example for the run-in, or to minimise fuel consumption. The extensive catalogue of accessories includes the MG-MP, the Moto Guzzi multimedia platform that connects a smartphone to the vehicle to provide an exceptional quantity of information useful for the journey.

VERSIONS AND COLOURS. The Moto Guzzi the V9 Roamer is available in three different colour variants, all of them with a glossy finish: Giallo Solare with an attractive black graphic on the mudguards and on the tank; Bianco Classico with an elegant red graphic on the mudguards and on the tank; Rosso Rubino with a pearl white graphic on the tank and on the mudguards.

The Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber is available in two colours, both with a completely matt finish: Nero Massiccio with a yellow chequered graphic on the mudguards and on the tank Grigio Sport with a red chequered graphic on the mudguards and on the tank.

ALBANIA: APRILIA SHIVER MOTORCYCLE
FOR THE NEW PATROLS OF THE STATE POLICE

EVENT IN THE CAPITAL TIRANA WITH THE MINISTER OF THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS SAIMIR TAHIRI, FOR THE LAUNCH CEREMONY OF THE NEW MOTORCYCLE INTERVENTION UNIT: OFFICERS AND VEHICLES LINED UP, FOLLOWED BY A PARADE THROUGH THE CITY STREETS. OFFICIAL VIDEO HERE

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Albania, Mr. Saimir Tahiri.

Security mission for the new motorcycle police patrols riding the Aprilia Shiver 750, in service in the capital Tirana and in Albania's main urban centres. On 15 February last, the launch ceremony of the Motorcycle Patrol Intervention Unit of the State Police was held. An important event attended by the Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. Saimir Tahiri, who underlined the importance of the new service, in the presence of other senior members of the Ministry of the Interior.

VIDEO: MOTORRAT E RINJ TE POLICISE SE SHTETIT

This was followed by the speech of the Director of the State Police, Mr. Haki Cako (in the photo below), with the participation of senior officials of the police, of the National Security Academy, of the press and TV.

The Head of the State Police underlined that the new general patrol has been provided with 73 Aprilia motorcycles (Shiver 750 model with ABS in "Police" version with customised livery), with modern accessories such as portable radio and visual and audible signals ( supplementary flashing lights and sirens).

Completing the equipment for the motorcycle police are the full-face helmets and uniforms with high-visibility inserts. This new service, explained Mr. Cako, will directly affect the increase in the trust of citizens: it will be fast and professional, able to rapidly respond to the needs of the population and capable of immediate intervention to combat crime.

In order to fulfil its important mission and achieve its strategic objectives, the State Police must be innovative and demonstrate creativity in the way in which it provides its service, in order to better respond to the new challenges it faces, continued Mr. Cako.

In this context, also the Motorcycle Patrol Intervention Unit, which is the latest service to be added to the State Police, aims to increase the effectiveness of its operations. The motorcycle unit will be established and function as part of the local police services, at the local Police Headquarters in Tirana and police stations in Durres, Vlora and Shkodra, with the intention of organising additional patrols in other structures of the State Police (government institution which purchased the Aprilia motorcycles via Edmond, the Piaggio Group importer).

Through this service, the State Police aims to achieve a number of objectives:

  • More complete control of the territory with a Police service in areas which cannot be patrolled with cars or officers on foot.
  • Increase in the speed of intervention of police patrols in all inhabited areas or centres.
  • Increase in the parameters of the fight against crime, increasing chasing and capture interventions.
  • Reduced costs compared to car patrols.
  • Alignment of the level of service of police patrols with Western standards.

The ceremony took place in the important square dedicated to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, where the University of Tirana is situated.

LONDON: VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE AUCTION
MOTO GUZZI SUPERSTARS

AT THE INTERNATIONAL COYS EVENT, ORGANISED AS PART OF THE 2016 CAROLE NASH MCN LONDON MOTORCYCLE SHOW, SIX VINTAGE MOTO GUZZI BIKES WENT UNDER THE HAMMER. A REPRODUCTION 8-CYLINDER GUZZI FROM 1956 FETCHED A STUNNING PRICE OF MORE THAN 240,000 EURO!
Interest in collecting motorcycles is growing as are the numbers of connoisseurs ready to go all out to acquire rare models. Confirmation comes from the success of the Coys international auction held on 13 February as part of the London Motorcycle Show. At the event, the auction house sold 115 two-wheeler lots from all over the world, mostly motorcycles and names that have gone down in the history of motorcycling (including a number of now extinct brands); rare, highly sought after and expensive items!

The Moto Guzzi bikes attracted strong interest, particularly the sports and racing models. One of the most surprising moments came with a final bid of 196,250 pounds for a perfect reproduction of the Moto Guzzi V8 500 GP from 1956, built fifteen years ago by a former Mandello mechanic! The sound of the engine is obviously a celestial sound as far as Guzzi fanatics are concerned.

Another Moto Guzzi superstar at the auction was a Guzzi V7 Sport original from 1972, a Daytona winner: 13,400 pounds.

Even more impressive was a 500 bicilindrica GP original from 1951, which fetched 111,250 pounds.

Lenny Kravitz (photo: Mathieu Bitton).

“It’s a beautiful California day. About to hit the Pacific Coast Highway. Thank you Cycle Garden Moto Guzzi for the 1973 Eldorado”: this is the message posted on 1 March by celebrated US singer and guitarist Lenny Kravitz on his Facebook page (more than 5,800,000 likes); a post shared by more than 4,500 followers. It must be a memorable experience to ride a captivating vintage Moto Guzzi bike along the spectacular Pacific Coast Highway (a favourite road with motorcyclists, which winds along the cliffs with sheer drops to the ocean). The singer is a keen biker, and we have a message for him: “Hi Lenny, for your next trip along the coast, try the new Eldorado: a 1970s-style revival with a legendary engine and cutting-edge technology, it guarantees an emotion-packed ride.” Confirmation comes from another devoted Guzzi and Eldorado fan, actor Ewan McGregor. Here is his video.

MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

DEVELOPMENT PROCEEDS ON THE APRILIA RS-GP

ALVARO BAUTISTA AND STEFAN BRADL BUSY WITH POST-RACE TESTING AT JEREZ AND MUGELLO. THE NEW BIKE CONTINUES TO EVOLVE

With the race weekend at Jerez filed away with positive signs of growth for the bike, development work continues on the Aprilia RS-GP machines. On 25 April, riders Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl were busy with a day of testing on the track that saw them compete in the Spanish Grand Prix, the fourth event in the 2016 season. The Aprilia Racing Team Gresini riders tested the first technical upgrades of the RS-GP as well as new tyre options.

The RS-GP made its début on the eve of the first race, the Qatar Grand Prix held on 20 March, so it is only logical that the development of new solutions continues, the most visible of which (the aerodynamic winglets) were immediately popular with the riders who used them in practice and in the race. Although the new Aprilia demonstrated the quality of the project from its very first laps, especially in terms of rideability, in Jerez Stefan and Alvaro worked on a series of chassis components, including a new frame and a new swingarm. The tests, to establish the best stiffness combination for the two elements, will continue on the Mugello track.

ROMANO ALBESIANO (APRILIA RACING MANAGER).“We had a pretty intense day in Jerez. We had a lot of things to test, beginning with the new frame and a new swingarm, new forks that are not as stiff, a lot of electronic settings and a fuel feed system with different pressure. We also focused on a few specific set-ups, solutions that are usually not tested during the race weekend. We gathered a large amount of information overall, notably that we are moving in different development directions for the two riders, whose requirements differ. We'll keep working in the coming days at Mugello, both with our official riders and with our test rider, Mike Di Meglio, to see which combinations can be used already in the next race at Le Mans.”
FAUSTO GRESINI (TEAM MANAGER).“A very profitable day of testing. Getting on to the track right after the race allowed us to make some very accurate comparisons, and that helps streamline development. The results are positive: some components worked well so we'll continue testing them at Mugello to see which upgrades to implement for the Le Mans round. Aprilia is doing a great job and I am very pleased with the efforts of the entire team.”

ALVARO BAUTISTA: “TESTS ON THE NEW FRAME AND SWINGARM.”

“The goal today was first and foremost to test a new frame and a swingarm with varying degrees of stiffness. I have to say that I found no particular advantages with the frame, whereas the swingarm needs to be tested a bit more before we draw any final conclusions. As for the tyres, I still like the standard solutions better than the new ones, whereas the tests we did on the chassis today have shown us the direction we need to follow for upcoming developments. It was important to work methodically, given the number of tests.”

STEFAN BRADL: “WE’RE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.”

Aprilia and a few tyre solutions. We had some good results from the frame and swingarm and, although it was only our first contact, the initial impression is that we are moving in the right direction. In any case, we need to do a bit more testing to follow up and gather more information. In fact, we'll analyse some of the components we tested today at Mugello as well.”

EARLY RACES CLOCK UP POINTS

Four Grand Prix have been held so far, from March to April 2016, in Qatar, Argentina, Texas and Spain. The new Aprilia RS-GP bike put in an excellent showing on its debut at the Losail track: with only a few kilometres behind it, and much development work to go, it immediately won points with rider Alvaro Bautista.

The race weekend at the Argentinian race track in Termas de Río Hondo was an encouraging experience too: Bradl and Bautista both scored points for their Aprilia RS-GP bikes; Stefan’s 7th place was the best result, backed by a tenth place for Alvaro.

More points came on the US circuit in Austin, with tenth place for Bradl and eleventh for Bautista, confirming the growth of the project on the new bike.

Then came Jerez: Bradl secured points for Aprilia, while Bautista slipped battling to keep in the top ten. The next races will be sure to bring new thrills.

MOTO GUZZI STORY 1921-2016

95 YEARS OF THE EAGLE BRAND:
AS A LEADING FIGURE IN GLOBAL MOTORCYCLING

FROM FOUNDATION TO ENTRY WITHIN THE PIAGGIO GROUP (FIRST EPISODE)

On March 15th, 1921, the “Società Anonima Moto Guzzi” (Anonymous Society of Moto Guzzi) was established in Genoa, aiming to achieve “the manufacture and sales of motorcycles and other activities related to the mechanical engineering industry.  Partners in this enterprise were Emanuele Vittorio Parodi, noted Genovese ship owner, his son Giorgio and friend Carlo Guzzi, his former comrade in the Royal Air Force, along with friend Giovanni Ravelli, who was also an aviator with Parodi.  It was to his memory that the Moto Guzzi logo featuring an Eagle with spread wings was dedicated

Carlo Guzzi

Giorgio Parodi

The first motorcycle was the legendary 8 horsepower Normale, followed by other successful models such as the Guzzi G.T. in 1928, nicknamed “Norge” for the expedition to the arctic circle, and the Airone 250 (1939), which was the most widespread “mid-cylinder” bike in Italy for more than 15 years. The company also achieved sporting success, the first in the prestigious Targa Florio in 1921, which began an impressive series of successes. The rich collection of Moto Guzzi trophies, at the time of retirement from competition in 1957, includes 14 world speed titles and 11 Tourist Trophies.

The post-war period saw the birth of models such as the Guzzino 65 (“the Goldfinch”), which was the highest-selling motorcycle in Europe for more than 10 years. Following this were the legendary Galletto (1950) and Lodola 175 (1956). As the world’s leading manufacturer, in 1950 Moto Guzzi created a futuristic wind tunnel in Mandello del Lario (shown in the photo beneath the title).

The racing team was brilliant, featuring technicians such as Umberto Todero and Enrico Cantoni, as well as a designer who would soon become a legend: the Milanese Giulio Cesare Carcano, father of the Guzzi Eight Cylinder with its 285 km/h maximum speed.

At the end of the 1960s, Moto Guzzi created the 90° V-twin engine, which was destined to become the very symbol of Moto Guzzi. Many models were based on this engine, including the Guzzi V7, the V7 Special and another legend, the Guzzi V7 Sport. The famous twin-cylinder was also offered in smaller displacements with the V35 and V50. The most celebrated maximum-displacement Gran Turismo was the Moto Guzzi California, which came equipped with electronic fuel injection and an integral braking system with three disks. Dedicated to the US market, together with the Ambassador and Eldorado models, it adopted the characteristic 850cc engine, which has been rediscovered and revived for the current range.

The sporting heritage is represented by models such as the Le Mans (discussed in the next article of the Anniversary series), the  Daytona, the Centauro and the Sport 1100. This distinctive character made a powerful comeback in the 1990s, with the new California, Nevada and V11 Sport series.

A NEW ERA. On December 30th, 2004, Moto Guzzi became part of the Piaggio Group (the president and CEO of which is Roberto Colaninno), a European leader in two-wheeled motor vehicles and one of the leading manufacturers in the sector. It was in this spirit of revival that, in March of 2005, the Breva 1100 was presented, a new Italian success story in the “naked” segment. In September of the same year, great fanfare was aroused with the launch of the Griso 1100, a bike that was born from innovative technical solutions and bold styling. The Breva and Griso are also offered, beginning in April of 2006, with the classic Guzzi 850cc engine.

In May of 2006, with the Norge 1200, Guzzi returned to Gran Turismo: total protection, refined chassis, and a new 1200cc twin-cylinder to go the distance in complete comfort thanks to standard features withouth compromise. Norge won the hearts of 14 international journalists in July of 2006, when it carrled them 4,429 km to Cape North, following the route taken in 1928 by the bike’s predecessor: the GT 500 created by Giuseppe Guzzi (brother of the founder Carlo Guzzi).

BORN 40 YEARS AGO

MOTO GUZZI LE MANS:
A GLORIOUS BREED

“Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans: a glorious breed” was the title of a lengthy and detailed article on Motociclismo.it a couple of years ago. The summary reads: “It was a motorbike out of the ordinary, well ahead of its Italian and international contemporaries, fast and sporty, but also reliable and a great traveller. Produced in three series from 1976 to 1984, it moved up to 1,000cc and later to 1,100cc.” The Moto Guzzi Le Mans was presented at the Milan Motor Show in 1975 and won an immediate following. Developed in a design centre, the new sports bike from the Eagle brand featured linked braking and was based on the official motorcycles (such as the V7 Sport) that in the 1970s competed in the “Bol d’Or”, the historic speed and endurance race on French circuits, including Le Mans. It was an inspired move: and the Le Mans became part of the best sport tradition of the Mandello del Lario brand, which this year celebrates its 95th anniversary.

THE MOTOCICLISMO.IT GALLERY

The Le Mans has fascinated Guzzi bikers all over the world for 40 years, and boasts a variety of custom models.

“The Le Mans is fondly remembered by many bikers. Even today when you look at a Le Mans, it's impossible to resist its appeal, the result of a successful mixture of power, exclusivity, compactness and essential beauty,” writes Motociclismo.it ( www.motociclismo.it).
It's true: the web is packed with videos starring carefully restored Le Mans bikes, from Italy and America to Germany and Japan. Here are some examples.

BIKERS WITHOUT BORDERS:
25 YEARS TRAVELLING ON A MOTO GUZZI V65 FLORIDA

HIM, HER AND “MOTINA” (“LITTLE BIKE”), THEIR FAITHFUL COMPANION. ALWAYS TOGETHER AROUND THE WORLD, CLOCKING UP MORE THAN 270,000 KM. FROM EUROPE TO AFRICA, AUSTRALIA AND AMERICA. AN UNSTOPPABLE TEAM: MAURIZIO DI BIASIO AND DANIELA POLETTO

THEIR ROOTS: A GUZZI BIKER FATHER AND A MOTO GUZZI MG 35C. “I think DNA is the only explanation when a person has a passion for something,” says Maurizio De Biasio (a furnishings salesman from Sacile, in the province of Pordenone). “In my case, if it hadn’t been for my father’s love of engines, we probably wouldn't be talking here today. I met my first Guzzi bike back in 1984, thanks to my favourite “sponsor”. Carried away by an enthusiasm for a return to his origins, my dad bought me a wonderful brand new V 35C. He had always been a Guzzi devotee and he introduced me to what is still my hobby today, my real passion: motorcycling....”.

MY FIRST TRIPS WITH DANIELA. “It was 1985: my wife Daniela first saw me sitting on my dazzling Guzzi with a shiny all-black full-face helmet and our future was set. The 35C taught us a lot about riding, travelling, eating up the miles! Our first trips outside Italy were to visit relations in Germany. They were great journeys, the first time that we really felt a sense of freedom, the ‘easy rider’ experience…with it of course came the first aching backs, the first cold and rain, the first ‘who made me do this!’. If you can survive all this, then the trio has what it takes to go further.”

ADVENTURES AROUND THE WORLD. “But in 1989, I met Her… a wonderful brand new Guzzi Florida 65; this time my father didn't open his chequebook (he’d already given!), Daniela approved (if nothing else, the Florida was more comfortable and got you home faster!), and so I reluctantly had to say goodbye to my V35C. But the roar of the 650 twin cylinder dispelled any sadness or melancholy, it was time for a change! And it was time to look beyond Germany and venture into Europe!

Since then, for the three of us, me, Daniela & Motina (a perfect team), it’s been one discovery after another: Austria, France, Spain, Syria, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Morocco, Lithuania, Andorra, Ireland, Holland, Slovenia, Estonia, Belgium, England, Denmark, Finland, Scotland, Latvia, Iceland, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Turkey, Russia, Czech Republic, Belarus, Slovakia, Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, as well as the USA (coast to coast), Tourist Trophy, North West 200, Bol D’Or, North Cape, Elefantentreffen, the incredibly fascinating Australia, and South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Twenty-five years, in which time Motina has ‘digested’ more than 270,000 kilometres, always by our side and in tip-top form.”

THE WEBSITE: A PASSION FOR MOTORBIKES

“The website sets out to be somewhere where travellers, bikers, Guzzi bikers and so on can browse travel diaries, photos, videos, articles from magazines or newspapers, and share emotions, find useful information, develop their motorcycle skills or discover new places. Travel for passion, for humanity, for fun… the important thing is to travel, explore, learn, know, compare, or at least… dream.” (The photos for this article have been taken from the website).

AN AFRICAN TALE

One of the stories in the “collection” of Maurizio and Daniela’s journeys on their Moto Guzzi, all carefully prepared and organised, starting with a detailed “check-up” for the motorbike before each departure, is “Meeting with Africa”: South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. More than a month of discovery and adventure, starting from Cape Town (where the bike had been shipped to from Italy): the Namibian Desert, the Etosha park, the Trans Kalahari Highway, hoping they wouldn’t run out of fuel, with warthogs crossing the road. And a thousand and one other landscapes, faces, emotions; close-up encounters with lions and gazelles and the pleasure of an ice-cold beer. The intrepid “Motina” covered 9,800 kilometres, in extreme conditions and temperatures. But then again, Moto Guzzi bikes have always been formidable travellers.

ON THE ROAD

TORONTO, PARIS, ILLINOIS
TOURING WITH MOTO GUZZI CALIFORNIA

He is Gregory S. Graig from Markham, Illinois, USA; she is his latest-generation Moto Guzzi California. Last summer they took a fantastic trip together, recounted by Gregory to the Guzzisti friends in the Moto Guzzi World Club, signing with his biker name “King Kong Ickki”: “I loaded my bike on an Airbus 310 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, en route to Paris, France on June 24th, 2015, and returned home in Markham on the first of August after more than a month touring Europe, through France, Italy, and Spain. After arriving in France, I retrieved my bike from customs, got directions to the nearest gas station, refueled, and then, having reached the French capital, I stayed in the hotel for four days, visiting the city, where I had already been some years before. Then, I left Paris via the E-15 and rode to Villefranche-sur-Saône and the St. Etienne area. I stayed there 4 days riding to Lyon and back to explore France.”

“Then I went straight to Italy via A6, E611, A40, E63, A9…I stayed in Como for four days, taking a tour of the surrounding area and visiting Mandello del Lario, where Moto Guzzi was born. I signed the guest book with my “street name,” namely my biker name from the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club 1986, Chapter 3, Chicago, Illinois, which is King Kong Ickki”.

“Then again I travelled by A9, A50, A7, E25, E80 in the direction of Menton, France. I stayed there for four days to see the area and the Principality of Monaco, riding on the streets of Montecarlo…then following the A8 after Menton on the way to Marseille. I drove around to discover the area, where I stayed 4 days; I was amazed at the variety of ethnicities of people I saw there! I left Marseille via E15 en route to Barcelona, Spain. My wife and I have visited Barcelona several times, but this time it was just me and my motorcycle! I stayed in the capital of Catalonia for 5 days, riding to places I hadn’t been before as well as visiting places around the city. Next stop: the Principality of Andorra via E9, A66 just to say I’ve been there and also went to Toulouse, France leaving via E72 en route to Merignac, France; a beautiful tour with 3 days of stay, then I left via the A83 en route towards Nantes, staying another 3 days touring the area. I left via E60 en route to the port city of Brest. I had read stories about Brest, so I wanted to go there.

Then leaving the E50, E401 on diverting in Saint-Malo, beautiful city, then the A84 towards Caen, where I stopped only one day (I hope to return and see more); then via A13, E44, A28, E402 on the Calais route for another stop of four days, visiting the area always riding my bike. The final journey by E15 with return to Paris, parking for 5 days and returning to Toronto, where I then drove up to the house, in Markham in Illinois.”

But the “on the road” summer wasn’t quite finished for Gregory: “After being home for a week and my wife and daughter going to Los Angeles, California, I took off via I-80, I-76, I-70, I-15, US101...stayed 14 days and returned to Markham via US 101, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-80. On I-40 outside Flagstaff, Arizona is a well preserved meteor crater, I had been there years ago…and wanted to get more pictures.”

“Then I rode to Washington DC for the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March (considered the largest African American demonstration, ed.), and rode around Maryland to see some of the state…” And Gregory, who has also won awards and trophies for his motorcycle trips, concluded by saying: “My MG California and I are one!”.

APRILIA MALAYSIA: THE “JOHORIDE”
FOR FANS OF THE CAPONORD

Aprilia Malaysia (Naza Premira, Naza World of Bikes) are a formidable team: not only are they dealers, they also promote many successful events. One of the most recent was the “Johoride”, on the weekend of 5–6 March 2016, for owners of Aprilia Caponord motorcycles. The route: starting from the capital Kuala Lumpur and heading to Ayer Keroh, Yong Peng and finally Johor Bahru (the main city of the state of Johor), where the group of Aprilia bikers visited (and made donations to) a centre that houses orphans from the ages of 3 to 6. Here is the Johoride video:

Johoride CSR ride from Aprilia Caponord owners

A passion for the Italian brand Malaysian style, reflected in the faces and smiles of the participants, the staff at the centre, and their small guests who were thrilled to take a close-up look at the motorcycles.

Riding, laughing and eating together, sharing emotions and helping the youngest members of the community. A really great way to be “Aprilia owners”, in Malaysia and in the rest of the world.

MY BIKE MOVIE

“BALADE A MANDELLO DEL LARIO”
ON THE MOTO GUZZI V7 SPECIAL

Fred & Dom, GS Vintage.

GS Vintage combines a variety of elements: travel, gastronomy, conviviality, the pleasure of discovery and, above all, a passion for vintage motorcycles. The program was created by two French bikers, Fred & Dom, who take other riders on memorable trips, preferably through the Alps and along the French-Italian Riviera, to enjoy stunning landscapes, fascinating locations and tasty stopovers to sample the local gastronomic specialities, in the name of the good life.
In true GS Vintage spirit, one of the highlights of their program was a tour to discover the homeland of Moto Guzzi, the historic and prestigious Italian motorcycling marque, which this year celebrates its 95th anniversary. Here is the video of their trip – on a Moto Guzzi V7 Special – along the banks of Lake Como, with a visit to the Eagle factory and museum. It's a great video and very popular among web surfers.
