PIAGGIO VIETNAM:
VISIT BY ITALIAN PREMIER MATTEO RENZI

Since June 2009, more than 410,000 vehicles produced in the Group’s Vietnamese factory. Roberto Colaninno: “Ahead of many other Western manufacturers, the Piaggio Group has followed a global expansion strategy.” Social commitment with "Vespa for Children" at the National Hospital for Paediatrics in Hanoi

The Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on 10 June 2014 visited the Piaggio Group’s Vietnamese offices and industrial facility in Vinh Phuc, an industry park not far from Hanoi international airport.
Premier Matteo Renzi, accompanied by the Italian Ambassador to Vietnam, Lorenzo Angeloni, was welcomed by Piaggio Group Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno and by Group Deputy Chairman Matteo Colaninno.

“I take great pride in the visit of the Italian Prime Minister to our Vietnamese production facility,” said Roberto Colaninno. “This is the most important possible mark of recognition for all the Italian engineers and managers who, since 2008, have worked on the Piaggio Vietnam project, and for all the Vietnamese men and women who work with us on our production operations and contribute to the commercial success of an Italian symbol like the Vespa. We began with a greenfield project and in less than five years have already produced and sold more than four hundred thousand vehicles.”
Ever since Immsi acquired control of Piaggio the end of 2003, the Piaggio Group has pursued an international development strategy. “Ahead of many other Western manufacturers, the Piaggio Group has followed a global expansion strategy,” Colaninno observed. “We have not implemented a delocation strategy; on the contrary, as we strengthened our leadership position on the European market with our production operations in Italy, we decided to begin manufacturing on the Asian markets, which, increasingly, in terms of volumes absorb almost all worldwide production of motorised two-wheelers.”

PIAGGIO GROUP’S THIRD-LARGET PRODUCTION OPERATION
With approximately 850 employees, Piaggio Vietnam is the Piaggio Group’s third-largest production operation, after Pontedera in the Italian province of Pisa, and Baramati (in the State of Maharashtra, the production site of its Indian arm, Piaggio Vehicles Private Ltd.). Of the total worldwide workforce of 7,700 employees (as at May 2014), most Piaggio Group employees – more than 4,000 – are based in Europe, including 3,800 in Italy, of whom approximately 3,000 at the head office and factory in Pontedera. The Piaggio Group also has a factory in China (in Foshan, Guangdong province), controlled through equal 45% shares in a joint venture with the Chinese group Zongshen.

Work on the Vietnam project began in 2007. Construction of the factory commenced in January 2008 and was completed in October the same year. In June 2009, the commercial launch took place of the first Vespa produced in the Vietnamese factory. Today, Piaggio Vietnam produces the Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint models launched around the world between the end of 2013 and early 2014, and the Piaggio Liberty high-wheel scooter, also a best seller in its category in Europe. The Piaggio Vietnam production facility currently covers an area of 190,000 m2, including buildings on 53,000 m2, more than double the initial surface area, and includes the Engine Factory, which opened two years ago.
Since the start-up of local operations, to date (end of May 2014), more than 410,000 two-wheelers have been manufactured by Piaggio Vietnam – including 220,000 Vespa scooters – for sale on all the main markets in South East Asia and Asia Pacific: Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Philippines, Cambodia, Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China, Australia, New Zealand.
In 2013, of the approximately 560,000 vehicles sold worldwide by the Piaggio Group, more than 105,000 vehicles were sold in the Asia Pacific region (not including India), for revenues of over 193 million euro.

OPERATIONS IN VIETNAM AND ASIA PACIFIC
There are currently 87 Piaggio Group sales outlets in Vietnam, and 328 in the Asia Pacific area as a whole. In the People’s Republic of China, in 2014 the Piaggio Group will begin direct sales of Vespa and Moto Guzzi scooters and motorcycles, through a wholly owned company operating side by side with the Foshan joint venture. Distribution contracts have already been finalised for the first two important dealerships in China.
In the Asia Pacific region, the Piaggio Group operates through direct subsidiaries not only in Vietnam, but also in Indonesia, Singapore and Japan. Piaggio Vietnam’s current product range includes – in addition to the Vespa Primavera and Sprint, the very latest arrivals, launched in parallel with the versions produced in Pontedera for Western markets – the Vespa LX and the Piaggio Liberty, Fly and Zip scooters in 100, 125 and 150cc displacements. All the models are equipped with latest-generation 4-stroke engines offering a sharp reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The availability of cutting-edge engines in terms of emissions, consumption and reliability is a key element in the premium strategy implemented by the Piaggio Group throughout the region, which has established the Vespa as a premium product, thanks to its strong Italian content and the brand’s global reputation.
Engine production for Piaggio Vietnam vehicles was the focus of the very important second phase in the expansion of the Piaggio industrial complex in Vinh Phuc, which from 2010-2012 reached its current total surface area of 190,000 m2. The new Engine Factory began operations in mid-2012, flanked by the aluminium machining shop. Production capacity and flexibility were also enhanced for vehicle construction, with the installation of the third assembly line, and in 2013 work was completed on the vehicle test track and the expansion of the R&D and Testing units.

THE PIAGGIO GROUP GLOBALISATION STRATEGY
Piaggio’s industrial operations in Vietnam are a cornerstone of the Group’s international strategies. Over the last ten years, the Piaggio Group has transformed itself from a scooter manufacturer closely linked to the Italian market and with sales operations in Western Europe into Europe’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer, with a consolidated share of approximately 18% of the overall market and a 26% share of the scooter segment, and into a global player in two-wheelers and three- and four-wheel light commercial vehicles. At the end of 2004, with the acquisition of the Aprilia and Moto Guzzi motorcycle manufacturers, the Group’s historic headquarters and primary manufacturing site in Pontedera were joined by the Aprilia and Moto Guzzi head offices and factories in, respectively, Noale-Scorzè (Venice) and Mandello del Lario (Lecco).
Meanwhile, the Piaggio Group was building a presence in Vietnam to operate across the ASEAN market, and rapidly expanding its manufacturing and sales activities in India through a wholly owned subsidiary, which today produces three- and four-wheel commercial vehicles, engines and scooters. In China, the Piaggio Group and the Zongshen Group have equal 45% shares in a joint venture in Foshan, in Guangdong province, for the production and sale of motorcycles and scooters.
On Western markets, volumes have been falling in absolute terms for many years, yet the region is still of fundamental importance in terms of average product value. The Piaggio Group has a consolidated leadership position on the European two-wheeler market and has established a solid presence in the Americas, with premium products and brands (Vespa is the leading brand on the US scooter market), and, more recently, through entry into the value-for-money low-displacement two-wheeler segment, notably in South America.
In the USA, the Piaggio Group operates through a sales subsidiary in New York, and through the Piaggio Group Advanced Design Centre in Pasadena, California, whose advanced research work on technology and style focuses specifically on new mobility requirements and on the reduction of energy consumption and emissions.
The Piaggio Group international growth strategy pursued to date has been based not on production delocation (the 2- 3- and 4-wheel vehicles marketed in Western countries are manufactured in the Group’s Italian factories), but on action to strengthen the Group’s commercial positioning around the world, in a context of particularly intense competitive pressures. This is achieved by leveraging and investing in the constant enhancement of key assets: distinctive, internationally famous brands; extensive sales networks on core markets; R&D expertise geared to innovation, safety and eco-sustainability; an international management team able to develop the Group’s global vision and interact with local players; a strong international presence, with local operations for all core processes from marketing and R&D to production and procurement.

CHARITY:
DONATED THE VESPA
NUMBER 400,000 PRODUCTED IN VINH PUCH

In Vietnam, last year the Piaggio Group launched the first initiative under Vespa for Children, an international charity whose goal is to improve the quality of life for infants and children. Vespa for Children is financing an important collaboration program between the National Hospital for Paediatrics in Hanoi and the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, which helps children suffering from complex urological pathologies – urogenital malformations and renal failure – who need kidney transplants, other forms of surgical treatment and dialysis.
To mark the visit of Premier Matteo Renzi, two-wheeler number 400,000 of Piaggio Vietnam production (see photo) was donated to “Care the People”, an NGO in Danang, Vietnam, founded by Enzo Falcone, a physician from Milan.

INTRODUCING THE NEW PIAGGIO MP3 500

THE FIRST THREE-WHEELED VEHICLE IN THE WORLD WITH ABS BRAKING AND ASR TRACTION CONTROL. LARGER WHEELS, NEW PMP SYSTEM TO CONNECT YOUR SMARTPHONE TO THE MP3: INCREASED COMFORT, SAFETY AND RIDING PLEASURE. NEW FRAME, NEW DESIGN, ADVANCED DRIVETRAIN FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND CONSUMPTION

The streets of Paris provided the stage for the debut of the latest version of the world’s most famous three-wheel scooter, a best seller that has shipped 150,000 vehicles to date. The Mp3 has enjoyed an extraordinary success in the French capital since its arrival in 2006. So Paris was the natural choice of test ground for the international press launch of the new generation of Mp3 scooters.

Piaggio Mp3 created a completely new market segment and rewrote the rulebook on urban mobility, introducing levels of safety and riding pleasure never before seen. The success of the Piaggio Mp3 is partly due to the exclusive Piaggio independent and tilting front wheel technology that the leading European Group was the first to develop and distribute in order to combine automotive type safety with practicality, user-friendliness and fun typical of the two-wheeled world. The Piaggio Mp3, rightfully considered the link between the car and scooter worlds, is now completely revamped with a brand new sleek and sporty design, new technical specifications and an exceptional control electronics package, which further increases its safety and riding pleasure characteristics.

TWO VERSIONS: SPORT E BUSINESS

The new Piaggio Mp3 is available in the Sport and Business versions and it is the first three-wheeled vehicle in the world to boast an antilock braking system (ABS) integrated with ASR traction control (Acceleration Slip Regulation), a Piaggio Group exclusive and technological first. The diameter of the front wheels has been increased, going from 12 to 13 inches, as has the diameter of the brake discs in order to guarantee unparalleled road holding, all to the advantage of safety. The new frame optimises stability at high speeds. The 50 litres capacity of the new helmet compartment, able to hold two flip up helmets, imply the possibility of travelling beyond the metropolitan boundaries, even with a passenger riding pillion, who will appreciate the larger seating space and the convenient retractable footrests.

The new Piaggio Mp3 has been radically revamped in terms of aesthetics: the work done by the Piaggio Style Centre benefits not only the shapes, modern and sleek, but also painstaking attention to the finishes, down to the tiniest detail, including the new wheel rims, the LED light clusters and the extremely complete dashboard, just to name a few. The elegance of the Piaggio Mp3 500 Business is highlighted by the two available colour schemes: Bianco (White) Iceberg and Nero (Black) Universo, whereas the Mp3 Sport comes in three colour schemes: Nero (Black) Carbonio, Argento (Silver) Cometa and Blu (Blue) Laguna.
The 500cc engine also underwent in depth changes to the timing, intake, exhaust and automatic transmission, all aimed at making the already excellent power (Piaggio Mp3 500 is the most powerful three-wheeled scooter in its category) and the generous torque even more usable, cutting down on noise and reducing fuel consumption. Thanks to the use of the electronic Ride-by-Wire accelerator extremely smooth acceleration was achieved, as well as the addition of an Eco engine map that can be easily selected by the rider in order to guarantee even lower fuel consumption.

EXCLUSIVE PIAGGIO MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM SYSTEM

Another top of the line Piaggio exclusive is the Piaggio Multimedia Platform, a system that allows a smartphone to be connected to the on board electronic system, transforming it into a multi-functional tool, an actual computer capable of simultaneously displaying information such as speedometer and tachometer data, but also engine power and torque, longitudinal acceleration, instant and average fuel consumption, average speed, battery voltage and much more. Using the smartphone connected to the Piaggio Multimedia Platform you can also view maps and routes, as well as identifying points of interest such as petrol stations and service centres and monitoring the condition of your tyres.

ROBERTO COLANINNO:
"THE MP3 THREE-WHEELED SCOOTER IS THE PERFECT EMBLEM OF WHAT THE PIAGGIO GROUP CAN DO, AND WILL CONTINUE DOING MORE AND MORE IN THE FUTURE"

Roberto Colaninno, Chairman and CEO of the Piaggio Group, speaking at the international press launch for the new Piaggio Mp3 in Paris had this to say: “The three-wheeled Mp3 scooter introduced today in its second generation is the perfect emblem of what the Piaggio group can do and what we intend to continue doing more and more in the future. We want to do completely new things, not simply introduce constant innovations. The three-wheeled scooter did not exist at one time and then the Mp3 was born. The same thing happened with Vespa almost seventy years ago and the world of mobility was changed.”

Speaking of the Piaggio Group strategies in the short to mid-term, Roberto Colaninno added: "Over the next ten years the world of mobility will change completely. The customer demand will be completely different. New needs will arise that are increasingly tied to the development of the large metropolitan areas such as Paris, London and New York, but also cities like Cairo, Sao Paolo, Delhi, Hanoi and Shanghai. I had announced it at EICMA motor show in Milan last November: in order to understand and meet these new mobility demands ahead of time, we must think of something that does not exist today. I'm not talking about evolving existing forms of mobility, but rather imagining completely new ones, which are capable of creating a true separation from the existing ones. This is the path that we want to follow and this is why we have begun speaking with top notch large research centres where we have found common interests in these big issues. We have found that they are also working toward imagining forms of mobility that will be widespread throughout the world over the next ten years, especially in large cities. Tackling issues such as focusing on a central issue like the pollution rate and how the mobility demand will develop. We want to be part of this effort, even alongside these important research centres, studying together on how to move forward into the next decade and taking advantage of our presence in the USA which is comprised not only of our sales branch in Manhattan, but also and above all, the Piaggio Advanced Design Center which we created in Pasadena, California.”

PIAGGIO GROUP: CONTINENTAL LEADER

We were reminded during the presentation of the Mp3 in Paris that the Piaggio Group is an absolute leader in the two-wheel continental market with more than 15% of the market share, and it is a leader in the scooter segment with more than 26% of the European market, a share which has increased slightly with respect to the first quarter of 2013. Also in the scooter segment, the Piaggio Group is "number one" in Italy (market share of 31.6%) and in markets such as Germany (35.6%), France (22.9%), Holland (26.8%), Belgium (24.3%) and Spain (20.6%). For the revolutionary Piaggio three-wheeled scooter the most important European markets are France (where more than 70,000 Mp3's have been sold so far since it was launched) followed by Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Holland. Piaggio Mp3 is the market leader in the GT scooter segment in France, holding 29.1% of the market share, in Germany with 24.4%, and in Great Britain with15.9%.

ABS AND ASR FOR THE NEW VESPA
GTS AND GTS SUPER

THE NEW MODELS FEATURE CUTTING-EDGE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS FOR TRACTION AND BRAKE CONTROL. ACTIVE SAFETY IS MAXIMISED ON THE NEW MODELS IN THE GTS RANGE: THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED OFFER IN THE HISTORY OF THE VESPA. WITH THE VESPA MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM
The new versions of the Vespa GTS have made their debut on the roads of the wonderful Mugello hills, in a setting that fascinated the members of the international press attending the launch. Test rides down cypress-lined avenues, through charming medieval villages, in the luxuriant green of the Tuscan spring countryside. The great Vespa’s riding features were enhanced by the advanced new electronic ABS brake system and the exclusive electronic ASR traction control system developed by the Piaggio Group. Available throughout Europe, the new Vespa GTS – and the sports version, GTS Super – is the largest, most powerful and technologically advanced Vespa ever produced.
The new Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super make their début, equipped with ASR traction control and ABS braking, cutting-edge electronic systems for active safety. These two new models are made in the spirit of the highest safety standards and even greater comfort thanks to the newly designed front suspension and new generation gadgets such as the Vespa Multimedia Platform, conceived to connect your Smartphone to your Vespa.
Large, convenient, comfortable, extraordinarily protective, the Vespa GTS - along with the sporty GTS Super version - combines its elegantly urban and city spirit with the travel and tourism vocation. Vespa therefore reaffirms its technological cutting-edge and introduces one of the most modern, advanced and safest vehicles in the world.

NEW SAFETY FEATURES. EVEN MORE COMFORT
Vespa GTS provides a powerful and safe two-channel ABS braking system. Each wheel is fitted with a revolution detection system which instantly reads speed and deceleration. The sensors dialogue with a 2-channel control unit which activates the ABS system if one of the two wheels decelerates abruptly with respect to the vehicle, avoiding locking and ensuring stability. The dual disc active braking system and the large 12” wheels contribute to safety.
The ASR traction control system uses the electronics and the ABS sensors to compare the rotation speed of the two wheels. When the sensors detect excessive speed on the rear wheel compared to the front, the ECU intervenes to prevent slipping and avoid losing control of the vehicle. While still maintaining the classic single arm suspension on the front, the new Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super range adopts a completely redesigned system (ESS) capable of cutting sliding friction in half, increasing riding comfort.
The new saddle on the Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super provides superior comfort thanks to the new padding and different covering. The Vespa GTS Super saddle also provides a white line finishing that runs along the edge, another feature which is clearly reminiscent of the traditional Vespa sporty saddles. The new GTS Super, on the other hand, also has a different instrument panel, backlit in red, and black wheel rims, with the front suspension characterised by a red spring.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
All models in the new Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super range come standard with a USB port located in the leg shield back plate compartment, while the front turn indicators contain a series of LEDs that act as daylight running lights. The trapezoid-shaped digital instrumentation is completely new.
The new Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super range add compatibility with the Vespa Multimedia Platform (VMP), the innovative multimedia platform which, when a Smartphone is connected to the on board electronic system VMP, transforms it into a real and sophisticated computer which is capable of providing the rider with various information both on the condition of the vehicle and on the route travelled. This allows the rider to use the Smartphone's touchscreen to keep constant tabs on all riding parameters and to handle both city traffic and longer trips in complete safety.
Vespa GTS and Vespa GTS Super are available with a 300 cc, single cylinder 4-stroke, 4 valve, liquid cooled with electronic injection engine capable of providing maximum power of 22 HP. These are values which guarantee the quick throttle response and extremely brilliant performance, making the new large body Vespas ideal vehicles both in city traffic and for touring, even at long range, in total comfort, whether alone or with a passenger. Vespa GTS Super is also available with a 125 cc engine, ideal for riders with only a category B driver's license.
Vespa GTS 300 is available in Nero (Black) Vulcano, Blu (Blue) Midnight and Grigio (Grey) Dolomiti colour schemes. Vespa GTS Super 125 and 300 are available in Nero (Black) Lucido, Montebianco (White), Rosso (Red) Dragon and Blu (Blue) Gaiola.

THE LARGEST AND
MOST POWERFUL VESPA EVER

Stefano Sterpone, Piaggio Group EMEA and Americas Sales & Marketing Director, had this to say about the new Vespa model: “The new Vespa GTS represents the most advanced, technological and high performance evolution of a brand which symbolises mobility. In every era Vespa has always offered the best of technology at the service of riding pleasure. The GTS, thanks to its size and the available engines up to 300cc – a record for engine capacity and above all for power that until a few years ago was unthinkable for the "Vespone" – embodies a dual spirit. On one side there is the urban and city vocation and on the other the touring and travel vocation: the new GTS comes on the market today as one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world thanks to its extraordinary riding electronics systems. In addition to the two-channel ABS system, the new Vespa GTS has the ASR traction control system, a Piaggio Group exclusive, which significantly contributes to safety, preventing the rear wheel from slipping in poor grip conditions. In such a technologically advanced vehicle integration with Smartphones was a must and this is a system that Piaggio Group is progressively installing on all its major models. The new front suspension and some important aesthetic touches such as the LED daylight running lights and the new instrumentation make the new Vespa GTS a vehicle that looks to the future and which is built to strengthen the positive Vespa trend, evidenced by a few significant figures: from 2004 to the present more than 1.3 million Vespas have been sold worldwide and during this decade the annual information has steadily increased until hitting almost 190,000 units sold in 2013.”

VESPA ACCESSORIES

At the international press launch of the new Vespa GTS at the end of April in Tuscany, the attention of the media was also captured by the rich selection of Vespa accessories and apparel. A fascinating showroom was created in the location chosen as the logistics base: take a look at the photogallery, and read the Style feature for more details.

SCARABEO 2014 RANGE:
SUCCESS STORY OPENS A NEW CHAPTER

THE SCARABEO HAS UNDERGONE A FULL MAKE-OVER WITHOUT BETRAYING ITS ORIGINAL STYLE. A POWERFUL PERSONALITY, THE SCOOTER TARGETS NEW GENERATIONS OF YOUNGSTERS TO CONTINUE A SUCCESS STORY THAT HAS MADE THE SCARABEO AN ICON OF ITALIAN CLASS OVER THE YEARS

After more than 750,000 sales, the archetypal high-wheel scooter has undergone a full makeover: completely new aesthetics, close attention to finishes and a full range of features. The new Scarabeo is available in three models: 50cc 2T, 50cc 4T 4V and 100cc 4T.
Created in 1993 from an inspired idea at Aprilia, the Scarabeo rapidly became the best-selling symbol of the high-wheel scooter, with more than 750,000 models produced to date. It owes its success to its ability to transcend fads and fashions, while remaining a benchmark with its youthful style and elegance. Light, easy to ride and handle, with low running costs, the Scarabeo meets every urban mobility requirement. Now it has evolved further, with the arrival of three new models: a 50cc two-stroke, a 50cc four-stroke and a 100cc four-stroke equipped with lively low-consumption eco-friendly engines.

FOREVER YOUNG
The three new “small body” scooters have undergone a thorough restyling that has restored and enhanced the classic Scarabeo design through a strong reference to the oval aesthetic that made the scooter famous. The Scarabeo’s forms have been completely redesigned with new volumes and new graphics. The front shield is new, colour-matched with the saddle. The front mudguard and the tail feature modern new elements, and the front and rear lights have been redesigned, with LED lights for the rear assembly. The 16” wheel rims are also new, fitted with broader tyres, and the instrument panel offers new graphics.

PHOTO GALLERY

The Scarabeo 50 2T is the entry-level model. It has brand new youthful graphics on the front shield and side panels, “total black” finishes, and is powered by a latest-generation two-stroke engine whose lively performance comes with low consumption and emissions.
The Scarabeo 50 4T 4V is distinguished by a comfortable double saddle, a windshield, aluminium finishes and 7-spoke wheel rims. The engine is a lively, refined technological core, with four valves and 3.2 kW (4.5 hp), making it one of the most powerful 4-stroke 50cc engines on the market. Both of the new Scarabeo 50 models feature a sturdy, easy-to-handle frame and are factory wired for installation of a USB port inside the compartment in the leg shield black plate.
The 100 4T model completes the Scarabeo family: an incomparable vehicle, whose perfect balance of simplicity of use and top performance is the result of a successful recipe combining the light weight of a 50cc with the performance and riding stability of a 125cc. The design is enhanced by many elegant chrome-plated details, and the windshield and USB port are standard features. The model also features a front light with LED daylight running lights and a new colour-matched top box with padded back-rest.
The new Scarabeo comes with a broad range of accessories, and is offered in a choice of fresh youthful colours: the Scarabeo 50 2T is available in Azzurro Like (sky-blue), Nero App (black), Bianco Cult (white) and Rosa Share (pink). A NEVER-ENDING LOVE
Vespa World Days celebrates the timeless legend of the Vespa, the only scooter that has gone from a stylish, easy-to-ride two-wheeler, the ideal choice for daily commuting, into a truly global brand, cherished and passed on from generation to generation.

REMEMBERING VWD 2013 – BELGIUM DAY 1

Vespa “mania” grew up immediately: as soon as the first Vespa made its debut, in 1946, scooter owners began forming associations, the first Vespa Clubs, in and outside Italy. Today there are more than 40 national Vespa Clubs (associated with dozens of local Clubs) and the Vespa World Club has more than 60,000 members around the world. In Italy alone, more than 100 rallies have been organised over the last year. It would be impossible to count the number of Vespa devotees, or the number of internet pages dedicated to the world’s most famous scooter.

REMEMBERING VWD 2013 – BELGIUM DAY 2

In almost seventy years, not only has the Vespa become the world’s best-loved scooter (with global sales topping 18 million scooters), it has also established itself as a cultural phenomenon, bringing together whole generations from different countries and different continents who share a common passion.

REMEMBERING VWD 2013 – BELGIUM DAY 3

Always made entirely in steel, all Vespa models, from the first legendary 98cc that put the world back on the road in 1946 to the very latest Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint, have won against time, continuing in their millions to ride down the world’s roads, fuelling the Vespa Club phenomenon. Restored, cherished, treasured, millions of Vespa scooters have become objects of devotion, passed on from father to son.

DEVELOPED FOR VESPA RIDERS ARRIVING FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR VWD, THE NEW APPLICATION PROVIDES NEWS, TOURIST ITINERARIES, ART, HISTORY, HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, TO HELP PEOPLE EXPLORE AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SPLENDID PROVINCE OF MANTUA
"Cultura da vivere, natura da scoprire" (Culture to live, nature to discover): this is how the Mantua area is described in the claim for Terre di Mantova, the project set up by the Province of Mantua to consolidate its identity, enhance synergies with the business community, develop the touristic, economic, cultural and environmental potential of an area of great interest, and build up the tourist appeal of local excellences.

The project, a first in Italy, offers the province’s municipalities an innovative approach to networking. The heart of the project is a free app with the same name as the project, Terre di Mantova – available from today for Android and Apple iOS in Italian, English and German. The app becomes a vital tool to accompany tourists visiting the area and provide support at every stage: from trip planning before departure to excursions in the area. It can also be used to tell others about the experience.

The app offers personalised itineraries and travel programs; maps and detailed descriptions of local resources; news and events; a Favourites area where users save content for offline browsing; an offline atlas; cycle paths; a travel diary; augmented reality; social networking (Facebook and Twitter); personalised postcards. All this in an app dedicated to tourists and their needs, an essential tool to help them discover the sights and many cultural attractions of the province of Mantua and share their experiences on the social media. The app recommends five routes: the Alto Mantovano; Mantua; the Medio Mantovano; Oglio Po; Oltrepò. It also indicates typical gastronomic products (and the best restaurants to try them): the Mantua marrow, tortelli, mostarda and the famous local cheeses, Parmigiano Reggiano DOP and Grana Padano DOP.

VIETNAM: SURGEONS FROM BAMBINO GESU' HOSPITAL
PERFORM FIRST PAEDIATRIC KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
UNDER THE "VESPA FOR CHILDREN” PROJECT

“LIVING DONOR” PROCEDURE ON A 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL FOR PAEDIATRICS IN HANOI. THE PATIENT IS RECOVERING WELL

The story was given prominent coverage in the international media. And what a heartening story it is: a successful kidney transplant, from a living donor, for a 10-year-old Vietnamese girl, at the National Hospital for Paediatrics (NHP) in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The operation was performed by a team of specialists from Rome’s Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital together with local medical staff, as part of the activities organised under the cooperation project between the Hanoi hospital and the Bambino Gesù, sponsored by the Piaggio Group through the Vespa for Children charity. The transplant took place on 25 March, and the little patient is recovering well.
FROM ROME TO HANOI: A WINNING PROJECT
Launched in early 2013, the project set up in Hanoi by the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital with funding from Vespa for Children makes treatment possible for Vietnamese children with complex urological pathologies – such as urogenital malformations and renal failure – who need surgery, dialysis and kidney transplants. A new Bambino Gesù department has been created at the Hanoi hospital, with 30 in-patient beds, special clinics and a specially equipped room for children recovering from transplants. Since January 2013, more than 1,000 children with urogenital malformations have undergone surgery.
In their mission in March 2014, the Bambino Gesù surgeons performed operations on another 20 children with serious urological problems and selected four small patients with renal failure as candidates for a kidney transplant. Two of the operations will take place in September.

GIUSEPPE PROFITI: DEDICATION AND EXPERTISE
"Thanks to the dedication and expertise of our specialists, we have achieved a vitally important goal," said the President of the Bambino Gesù, Giuseppe Profiti, at a meeting in Vietnam with the Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Leopoldo Girelli, the Italian Ambassador, Lorenzo Angeloni, and local authorities. "A successful paediatric kidney transplant from a living donor that saves a young life is a huge advance in the medical and scientific partnership between the Bambino Gesù and the National Hospital for Paediatrics in Hanoi. Thanks to the support of the Piaggio Group, the project to treat complex urological conditions in Vietnamese children is an important response to local healthcare needs, enabling us to raise the quality of life for a growing proportion of the population."

LORENZO BORGHESE: PARTICIPATION AND HOPE
Lorenzo Borghese, director of international activities at the Bambino Gesù, added: "This is the second year of the Project in Hanoi, which began in January 2013, and has achieved important success in terms of the quality of treatment and the number of children treated. As always, the initiative is driven by the strength of our professional ties and friendship with our Vietnamese colleagues and the authorities, who have fully embraced cooperation with our hospital. In just 15 months, we have exceeded all the targets set out in the initial Project description, examining more than 12,000 children and conducting surgery on more than 900. Training for the Vietnamese doctors in Rome and Vietnam has been our primary objective.
We hope that by January 2015, the doctors in Hanoi will have acquired ever greater expertise in treating complex urological pathologies and that kidney transplants, developed together with us, will be more readily available to the large numbers of children hoping for a better quality of life without the burden of dialysis.
This is a wonderful experience, in which we have all shared our skills to help those less fortunate than ourselves."

VESPA FOR CHILDREN:
THE PIAGGIO GROUP’S
INTERNATIONAL CHARITY

Launched by the Piaggio Group in 2013, “Vespa for Children” is a humanitarian charity that promotes social solidarity projects with a focus on healthcare and socio-medical assistance for children in the emerging countries. The first Vespa for Children project is in Vietnam, where a cooperation program has been set up by the National Hospital for Paediatrics in Hanoi and the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, the largest paediatric polyclinic and research centre in Europe, with ties with the top international bodies in the sector. The National Hospital for Paediatrics is Vietnam’s most important children’s hospital. Its cooperation with the International Missions of the Bambino Gesù began more than six years ago, and has fostered the shared development of technical and scientific expertise in a range of medical fields, through training courses, new skills building and updates for local medical staff.
Launching the international charity a year ago (April 2013), Piaggio Group Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno said: “The Vespa stands for quality of life, in Italy and around the world, for reasons that go beyond style or the new low-consumption zero-emissions engines we have developed. The Vespa is a pleasure to look at, to own and to ride. As I often say, people riding a Vespa have a smile on their faces. We are present all over the world with the Vespa. We have production facilities in distant countries. And as a responsible company, we believe we should be champions for the quality of life in the communities in which we work.”

EICMA CELEBRATES CENTENARY WITH THE
1ST WORLDWIDE 2 WHEELS FORUM

PRESENTATION OF AN INTERNATIONAL SURVEY ON THE VALUE OF THE TWO-WHEELER SECTOR: 13 BILLION EURO INVOICED IN 2013; 123,000 WORKERS, INCLUDING 53,000 IN ITALY. INDUSTRY LEADERS COMMIT TO SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

Among the initiatives marking the centenary of the EICMA World Motorcycling Exhibition, 1914-2014, an international study on the two-wheeler sector was presented in Milan on 29 April. The event was part of the first “Worldwide 2 Wheels Forum”, a summit in Milan where the leading names in the two-wheeler industry (bicycles and motorcycles) assembled to examine the current situation with representatives from the international institutions.

PROTAGONISTS.
Joining the industry leaders (the Piaggio Group was represented by Leo Francesco Mercanti, Head of Two-Wheeler Marketing) were: Carlo Pettinelli (Director General for sustainability growth and UE 2020, DG Business and Industry, European Commission); Maurizio Lupi (Italy’s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport); Roberto Maroni (Chairman of the Lombardy Regional Authority); Marco Fortis (Vice President of the Edison foundation and head of Economic Studies at Edison); Adjiedj Bakas (sociologist and trend watcher); Luca Colombo (Country Manager of Facebook Italia); Julien Flageul (Mobility representative for the City of Paris); Carlo Fidanza (Euro MP, Rapporteur on the Clean Power for Transport Directive); Angel López (Electromobility Project manager for the city of Barcelona); Pier Francesco Maran (head of the mobility department, City of Milan); Corrado Capelli (President of Confindustria ANCMA); Antonello Montante (President of EICMA).

“Celebrating EICMA’s centenary with this global forum means that the two-wheeler industry as a whole wants to share its tools for building the future, and considers growth and development to be the only way ahead,” said EICMA President Antonello Montante. “Individual mobility is the inalienable right of every individual. And consequently the two-wheeler, whether pedal- or motor-powered, is a sustainable solution and an opportunity to be encouraged.”

INTERNATIONAL STUDY ON THE VALUE OF TWO WHEELS.
One of the highlights of the Forum was the presentation of the first international survey on “The value of two wheels” (“Industry, market, mobility”), conducted in cooperation with The European House Ambrosetti, which examines all the economic and social issues of the world two-wheeler sector, with a special focus on Europe and Italy. The results of this original survey provide the foundation for future growth and development.

PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE WORLDWIDE, IN EUROPE AND IN ITALY.
Among the figures highlighted by the survey commissioned by EICMA, in the last 5 years world production of motorised two-wheelers (M2W) rose by 39% in terms of units. The western nations reported a production decline of 59% (-54% in Europe). Although Italy reported a fall of 52%, it is still the leading M2W producer.

VEHICLES ON THE ROAD AND NEW REGISTRATIONS.
Looking ahead, EICMA expects sales growth to be driven by the Asian nations and the emerging economies. There are approximately 32 million mopeds and motorcycles on European roads, of which 8.6 million in Italy alone. France was the leading country for M2W registrations in 2013, thanks to the steady performance of moped sales. Italian registrations fell by 67% from 2007 to 2013, in part as a result of the economic crisis, which caused the rotation rate in registered vehicles to plummet.

INDUSTRIAL VALUE.
In 2012, the value of industrial two-wheeler production in the EU was 10.7 billion euro. The two-wheeler sector provides jobs for more than 123,000 people, of which more than 53,500 people in Italy.

MARKET VALUE.
EU two-wheeler sales totalled almost 13 billion euro in 2013. In Italy, two-wheeler shipments were worth more than one billion euro in 2013. The two-wheeler segment produces annual tax revenue totalling approximately 3.6 billion euro.

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY.
Two-wheelers are the solution for sustainable mobility. In Italy, the two-wheeler value connected with time-saving is estimated at 2.5 billion euro/year. This amount translated into “days saved” thanks to the existence of two-wheelers is 72.8 million days. Use of two-wheelers in Italy delivers an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 2.1 million metric tons.
The world industry leaders at the forum declared their support for “The commitment to sustainable mobility”.

RECOVERING ENTHUSIASM AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE.
The Worldwide 2 Wheels Forum also included the presentation of the survey conducted by Sevendots, which examines ways of bringing motorised two-wheelers to a younger target. A number of proposals and initiatives were illustrated, forming a set of useful tools to reverse the current trend. Carefully mixed, these tools can catalyse a renewal of passion for motorised two-wheelers among a target of vital importance for the future solidity of the Italian and global motorcycle system.

THE FIRST WORLD FORUM.
The centenary of EICMA, the world’s most important and oldest two-wheeler exhibition, was marked with an exclusive event. The Forum highlighted new aspects of the industry by bringing together for the first time in the history of the two-wheeler senior managers from the leading international players and representatives from the political community, for a constructive debate on the new concept of sustainable mobility. The meeting promoted consensus on the main points of an industry commitment to the future.

AROUND THE WORLD

A ROMAN HOLIDAY ON THE VESPA
FOR ANDREW GARFIELD (SPIDER MAN) AND EMMA STONE

During a trip to Rome in April, for the Italian preview of blockbuster movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone took time out to tour the “eternal city” on a Vespa. They hired the scooter, put on their helmets and drove off round the streets of the tourist-packed city. The photos of the two actors on the Vespa went viral on the web (Lapresse, Repubblica.it).

GOOGLE DEDICATES A DOODLE
TO CINECITTA’

On 28 April, Google celebrated the Cinecittà movie studios in Rome with a “doodle”, published first on the British home page of the search engine, and later in Italy too. The doodle is a stylised representation of the sets of the most famous movies made at the Italian studios, to mark Cinecittà’s 77th anniversary:
The doodle was widely reported: for example, British daily The Guardian recalled some of the international movies filmed at Cinecittà (also known as Hollywood on the Tiber). These include "Quo Vadis", "Ben-Hur", "La Dolce Vita", the Oscar-winning film directed by Federico Fellini, which saw the Vespa scooter in a “cameo” role, in the famous scenes with paparazzi photographers hounding movie stars from the saddle of the world’s most famous Italian scooter. Something that happens to the Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck characters followed by photographer Irving Radovich in “Roman Holiday”, the famous movie filmed in Rome and Cinecittà that gave the Vespa planetary fame.

More recently, scenes from Martin Scorsese’s "Gangs of New York" and Mel Gibson’s "The Passion of the Christ” were shot in Cinecittà, a world symbol of Italian cinema. In the 1950s and 1960s, countless Hollywood stars came to the studios on the outskirts of Rome. Many movies had a part for the Vespa, which continues to be highly sought after for starring roles in movies, TV series and leading-brand commercials..

INDIA: A VESPA S FOR DIRECTOR UNNI VIJAYAN

A sporty new Vespa S was presented to Indian filmmaker Unni Vijayan to celebrate his victory at the 13th “River to River Florence Indian Film Festival” in the best film category, for his movie “Lessons in Forgetting”, based on the book by Anita Nair. The ceremony at which the Piaggio Group’s PVPL subsidiary presented the Vespa to the director was in held in April in Bangalore, India, the home town of Unni Vijayan, who was making his directing debut. Before making “Lessons in Forgetting”, Unni Vijayan edited the movies “The Blueberry Hunt” and “Mansarovar”.

The River to River Festival is held every year in Italy, in Florence and Rome, to promote films from and about India. It is the first festival of its kind in the world (organised with the patronage of the Indian Embassy in Italy) and presents the culture and traditions of the great Asian nation to an international audience, through its films. Selvaggia Velo of the “River to River Florence Indian Film Festival” said she was delighted with the festival’s cooperation with Piaggio, which began three years ago. The Vespa of course has always played a role in international cinema.
The next edition of the “River to River Florence Indian Film Festival” – the 14th – will be held in December 2014: from 6 to 12 December in Florence (at the Odeon cinema); and in Rome – from 13 to 14 December – at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila.

RINALDO ARMENIA
SCULPTOR OF THE VESPA PX

A PASSION OFTEN PRODUCES STARTLING RESULTS: THE STORY OF A SICILIAN CRAFTSMAN WHO HAS SCULPTED A REAL WORK OF ART

It has to be said that the passion for the Vespa of Rinaldo Armenia, a 51-year-old craftsman from Modica (in the Sicilian province of Ragusa), is as solid as a rock. The rock he used to create a sculpture of his 1981 Vespa PX 125 scooter.
A burning passion fuels motivation, dedication and commitment, generating outstanding results. Rinaldo Armenia tells Wide more: “My passion for the Vespa began when I was a youngster. When I was 14, I bought a Vespa 50, which I kept for about four years. A few years ago I decided to buy another Vespa: the PX 125 from 1981 I still have today, which re-awakened that desire for freedom I experienced when I was a lad.” It was that thrilling feeling that led Rinaldo Armenia to create a sculpture that would represent “his” PX 125 at its best, a tribute, a homage to an object that restored a sensation he had experienced as a young man, which had probably dulled in later years, but had certainly never disappeared.
“Well, I’ve been a Vesparado since I was a boy; I’ve always had a passion for the Vespa, to the point where I wanted to create one in stone, because I’m a craftsman by profession,” adds Rinaldo.
So the skilful hands of the Sicilian sculptor began working on the four tons of Tunisian stone, smoothing the sharp edges and modelling the forms until he had made a faithful representation of his beloved PX. Six hundred hours with a chisel, spread over a total period of eight months, underline the commitment to the creation of an authentic work of art, unique of its kind.

SCULPTURES DEDICATED TO THE VESPA

A tour of Europe to look at installations and sculptures dedicated to the Vespa. Let’s begin in Pontedera (in the Italian province of Pisa, where Vespa born), where the “Origine Vespa” installation by sculptor Mino Trafeli adorns the square in front of the town’s rail station. In Ageciras (near Cadiz, Spain), an iron statue shows a post-modern Don Quixote on the saddle of a Vespa, an original metal steed. Another sighting in Italy: in Pagliare del Tronto (near Spinetoli, Ascoli Piceno, in the region of Abruzzo), an installation of a Vespa in a crescent moon has become an attraction for Vespa Clubs (like the “Lele Novara” club in the group photo). The work, entitled “60 years Vespa”, was created by architect Luigi Neroni in memory of Corradino d’Ascanio, the inventor of the legendary Italian scooter. The installation was opened in August 2006, during a major international rally organised by the Vespa Club Piceno (the club’s president Emidio Giuseppe donated the piece to the town). In Fatima (Portugal), a place of pilgrimage, participants at the 2010 Vespa World Days were greeted by a plaster statue of the Vespa, erected on a roundabout.

Adventure

WORLD ADVENTURE:
LONDON-RIO DE JANEIRO ON A VESPA

BRITISH SOCCER FAN CHRIS HALLETT’S EPIC JOURNEY: FROM FEBRUARY TO JUNE, MORE THAN 15,000 MILES TO WATCH THE WORLD CUP IN BRAZIL

British football enthusiast Chris Hallett, 44, has undertaken an extraordinary journey: from London to Rio for the World Cup, on a Vespa with sidecar. More than 15,000 miles through Europe, the USA, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, bound for Rio de Janeiro. IT expert Chris left his office, withdrew the savings of a lifetime to finance the adventure, named “Scooters for goalposts” (to raise money for UNICEF), and set off. Once he reaches Rio, soccer enthusiast Chris will be cheering for the English team.

PHOTO GALLERY

During the trip, as he travelled from country to country, Chris organised a game in car-parks and streets outside football stadiums, as if they were an impromptu football pitch. Passers-by were invited to try a penalty kick, with his Vespa scooter acting as a goalpost. Successful “players” were offered the chance to hold a reproduction of the World Cup. Along the way, Chris visited a number of stadiums: in Paris Saint Germain Parc des Princes, Ajax Amsterdam Arena, Milan San Siro, Barcelona Camp Nou, Bernabeu del Real Madrid and the Benfica of Light stadium. He expects to reach Rio in time for the championship kick-off on 12 June.
His story has been reported by the world’s newspapers and television channels. “Obviously, the easiest thing would have been to fly to Brazil and sit on a beach until the matches begin. But where’s the fun in that? My way, I’m meeting people and seeing new places. People are a little wary when I ask them to try a penalty kick, but the Vespa and sidecar attract attention and positive reactions. As soon as people score a goal, they run to the scooter, grab the replica of the World Cup, kiss it and cheer.” The incredible Chris spreads happiness and good humour, making everyone he meets feel like “champions.” Even if they miss, they have a good time.
During his journey through Europe in March, Chris crossed the Swiss Alps, where he stopped for a few days snowboarding. In Italy, he took time out in central Milan, where he met some of the Piaggio staff in the Via Broletto offices. Then it was off to Pontedera in Tuscany, the homeland of the Vespa, to visit the Piaggio Museum. “The greatest challenge,” he says, “is riding 12 hours a day when it’s cold and wet. Travelling with a sidecar is more complicated than driving a car or a motorcycle: I don’t have the comfort of being in the warm and dry of a car, with all the luggage I need, nor I can nip past the traffic and go a bit faster as I would on a motorcycle.” But a Vespa is a Vespa, and a Vespa with a sidecar attracts even greater attention from the public and the media. And along the route he has met up with friends from the Vespa Clubs. In short, an adventure like this was possible only with a great traveller like the Vespa.

THE “VESPA-SONGWRITER” AND HIS
“REBEL JOURNEY TOUR”

DAVIDE TALONI IS A SINGER, AUTHOR, GUITARIST AND VESPA FAN. LAST YEAR, HE COMBINED HIS INTERESTS AND INVENTED A “REBEL JOURNEY TOUR”: A ROUND-ITALY TRIP ON A VESPA GTS 250, PERFORMING CONCERTS IN FIELDS, ON PIERS, MOUNTAIN PASSES AND LAKESHORES. THIS YEAR HE IS RAISING THE STAKES WITH A 6,000-MILE TRIP ROUND EUROPE

Passion, resourcefulness, music and a Vespa scooter. This is the “Rebel Journey Tour” of Davide Taloni, 35, from Chiuro (Sondrio), an initiative that has turned into a fantastic on-the-road adventure. Last year, Davide rode 5,400 miles round Italy, stopping in unusual places, well away from the familiar locations. A field, a pier, a mountain pass, an island: he chose the spot that most appealed to him, got off his Vespa GTS 250, unloaded his guitar, amplifier and tent, and began playing his songs to anyone who passed by.

The idea caught the interest of the media, and Davide Taloni received wide coverage in the press and TV. His answer when asked how the idea began: “In 2011 I released my first album, ‘Sogni di libertà’, but found it difficult to promote my songs. So I came up with a plan to play what I wanted, where I wanted, with no restrictions and at an affordable cost, testing my repertory directly with the public.” An intriguing idea that ensured visibility. This year, Davide is repeating the experience with the “Rebel Journey Tour 2014”: “I’ll be covering 6,000 miles with concerts on the road in Italy and parts of Europe: Germany, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia.”

PHOTO GALLERY

Why did he choose a Vespa? the reporters wanted to know. “My original plan was to take an old Vespa PX, but it was too expensive for my budget. Luckily, a dealer near where I live offered me a Vespa GTS 250 with very few miles on the clock, at a good price. I didn’t think twice, because it was exactly the practical means of transport I was looking for. I wanted a Vespa because it would keep costs down compared with a van, force me to take only the bare essentials and the idea of freedom inspired me. Of course, it wasn’t easy carrying everything, from the guitar to the technical equipment (amplifier, music CDs, etc.), but I learnt that it takes very little to achieve a dream. You and your passion are all you need.”
He confides that riding a scooter with an open mind has also helped his creativity: “The inspiration for many of my new songs came… below my crash helmet!”. Good luck, Davide!

AMERICA BY VESPA OF GIORGIO SERAFINO

In 2011, traveller and really Vespa fan Giorgio Serafino published a book entitled “L’America in Vespa” (Ugo Mursia Editore), recounting his trip from Chicago to Los Angeles along the legendary Route 66, on a 1978 Vespa 50 Special known as “General Lee” (which he rescued from a scrapyard and restored). Giorgio’s wife, Giuliana Foresi, accompanies him on his adventures. Giorgio tells us the book is now available in English, under the title “America by Vespa”, with an introduction by American poet Jack Hirshman. Last year, Mursia published Giorgio’s second book “Paradiso di polvere”, about his trip “to the heart of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia”, on his trusty General Lee.

VESPA IN PARIS: “LE SCOOTER DE L’AMOUR”

“Le scooter de l’Amour” is the title of a six-minute film directed by Sébastien Bidault and produced by Armand Robin. The tale, a tongue-in-cheek love story, is set in Paris. The stars are the enterprising Francis (who says: “Since I bought this scooter – a Vespa LX 50 he calls “Pespa” – my life has been great, I’ve got more sex-appeal and been more successful with women”); Angelina, a career girl, one of Francis’ conquests; then there’s shy student Jean-Zygmund, who is secretly in love with hairdresser Lola. When Jean makes up his mind to tell Lola he loves her, she rejects him because he is boring and insignificant.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Francis and Angelina has hit trouble after the scooter is stolen. The Vespa then becomes the catalyst that lights the spark between Lola and Jean, against the backdrop of Paris by night, with an Eiffel Tower pregnant with promise.
“Le scooter de l’amour” is also the title of the song used as the soundtrack for the film, performed by Guillaume Le Guellec.

GREECE: “A SURPRISE VESPA FOR MY FATHER”

Una bella storia arriva dalla Grecia, con protagonisti Dimitris Bitivanos, suo padre e la Vespa di famiglia: uno scooter longevo, con “soli” 40 anni di vita, tornata a splendere dopo un accurato restauro.
RaccA charming story from Greece involves Dimitris Bitivanos, his father and the family Vespa: a hardy scooter “just” 40 years old, which has been returned to mint condition after a painstaking restoration. Dimitris tells the story in the video posted on YouTube: “My father bought this Vespa (a Sprint Veloce 150cc) brand new in 1974. It was his first motor vehicle. Over the years, he maintained it in perfect condition, and it was my first vehicle too: I had many happy times riding the Vespa. More recently, however, it was abandoned in the garage, gathering dust and rust. Then I decided to give it a makeover and return it to the splendid two-wheeler I rode when I was a teenager. I made the decision on a sunny day, 6 April 2010, and wondered, what is more important? The end result of the restoration or the actual process?”
It took Dimitris three and a half years of work to achieve his dream. When the scooter was ready, with the help of his friends, he organised a big surprise for his father, presenting him with the restored Vespa in a carefully wrapped package. His astonished dad was almost speechless: then he kicked the starter for a ride down the lane by his house (he needed a helmet to go farther afield). An unforgettable emotion for father and son, thanks to the Vespa. Now Dimitris is taking part in the rallies organised by the Veria Vespa Club, in Macedonia.
