The press conference was opened by Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno: “Today we are presenting an extraordinary product at this world event, following on from the recent US launch of the Vespa 946 in New York, which has been a success beyond our expectations. The Vespa is an inimitable product: this year we’ll sell 170,000 (more than in 2012). So what is the secret of its success? The Vespa is a universal product, it belongs to the whole world, it’s youthful, it makes people happy, it lets them forget about their daily worries. Looking ahead,” Colannino continued, “Piaggio is staking everything on an extraordinary innovation, something even the most brilliant minds could not imagine today. A technology we want to apply to our engines, the result of advances in the USA, Japan, Germany and Italy. We shall be working on this and we shall astonish you, just as we have with the Vespa, ever since 1946: a product on the crest of the wave for decades that has always renewed and improved itself year after year. This means its designer was a genius. We want to keep faith with our industrial history, and anticipate the future. Tomorrow’s world will need a new form of transport, a vehicle that is fun to ride but can also move through traffic in cities struggling with problems like congestion, pollution, risks to safety. Over the next few years, we want to develop an innovation that cuts consumption, eliminates pollution and lets people travel safely in major cities like São Paulo, Cairo, Beijing, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, where millions of people move around every day. Piaggio will focus on the technological development of motorbikes and scooters, and, above all, on cutting-edge engine technologies.”
And we are here today, he added, to launch the Vespa Primavera, “an extraordinary scooter combining technology, design, fashion, fun, appeal. A product that is part of the history of Italy, part of people’s dreams and imagination.”
After the projection of the official Vespa Primavera video (shot in Venice, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Rome), the designers Marco Lambri (Piaggio Group Design Centre) and Miguel Galluzzi (Pasadena Research & Design Centre) appeared on the stage, with Leo Mercanti (2 Wheeler Product Marketing) for a detailed presentation of the new Vespa Primavera. A film shot in the Piaggio plants in Pontedera, Tuscany, explained how and where the scooter was developed, two other films presented the colour range and the history of the Vespa Primavera from its debut in 1968 to today’s latest arrival (on the stage, an exhibit of vintage vehicles illustrated the extraordinary story of the Italian brand).
Then it was the turn of motor-racing fans, with Marco Melandri and Romano Albesiano (director of Aprilia Racing and Motorcycle Technical Centre).
At EICMA, Piaggio was also present in the Green Planet area, with the Green Business Solution range: the Piaggio MP3 Hybrid 300 i.e. and the Piaggio Liberty e-mail, the nimble zero-emissions electric scooter for post offices.
The EICMA show is an autumn event, but along the entrance path into the Fair exhibition halls, journalists and visitors were greeted by spring – the Primavera! Highly coloured billboards presented the new Vespa, with the cheeky question: “Haven’t we met before?”

EICMA 2013 SPECIAL REPORT: WORLD PREMIERE

The Vespa Primavera legend is back

The youngest and most dynamic Vespa spirit, that has always driven the world's best-loved two-wheeler, returns to the model that uses it so well. It-s a new Primavera, launched at Eicma as world premiere.

The first Vespa Primavera emerged in 1968. This was the year that witnessed a new awareness amongst the younger generation, that suddenly wanted to yell for freedom. The year when every classic mould broke down, marking the history of western culture forever. From the universities of California to the squares of Paris, a new social group - that of young people - demanded a place in the front row of a fast-changing society. Vespa Primavera made its first appearance in that tumult of ideas and fervour, becoming the star by making two wheels and an engine available to the changing world: it became the heroine of an unforgettable season. Nimble, innovative lines, sparkling performance, easy and fun to ride - Vespa Primavera was a breath of fresh air in a world hungry for change. It went on to become one of the most durable and best-loved models in the Vespa story.

Vespa Primavera is back today, with a wealth of those values that produced the legend. Youthful, innovative, technologically ground-breaking, agile and dynamic, with an eye to the protection of the environment of which it is the star, the Vespa Primavera is the protagonist of its time, inheriting all the freshness and joy of life that go hand in hand with the story of a model that is a cult in the Vespa family tree. The new Vespa Primavera adopts some of the style and technical features of the Vespa 946 - the most esteemed and technologically advanced model ever created.

IT'S AN ALL-NEW VESPA
The Vespa story is one of continuous technical and style evolution that, right from the very first models, encouraged the on-going development of the world's most famous and well-loved two-wheeler so it was always one step ahead of the social changes. The modifications from one model to the next were often minimal; sometimes they were more important, but never losing sight of the original idea that placed elegance, pioneering technology and enjoyable riding at the heart of the project. During such a long, unique history, there have of course been real turning points marked by more definite renewal. Just a few milestones on the Vespa evolution path, that have influenced its course for generations. It happened with the Vespa GS in 1955, when Vespa discovered a sporty spirit that could produce breath-taking performance. Those were the years of American Rock’n Roll, the years of a generation that wanted to run, and Vespa interpreted those dreams and needs to the letter.
It happened in 1978, with the Vespa PX. From the ’70s on, the younger generations yearned to cross the borders and travel. They felt the need for a top-performing vehicle with a distinctly new style, more imposing and modern, suitable for a world racing towards social and technological revolution. The Vespa PX marked out that age, dictating the style of the various future Vespa families and becoming the most successful model (over three million were sold).
The Primavera steps forward as an important point of evolution in the Vespa story. During the design phase, every solution focused on increasing the level of comfort, safety and driving pleasure compared with the previous (and even recent) generations, continuing an evolution that, for almost 70 years and after more than 18 million vehicles sold over the five continents, makes Vespa the youngest and best-loved two-wheeler in the world.

EXQUISITE STYLE
The Primavera is a highly modern Vespa, designed with the elegance of an exclusive style but without renouncing the comfort aspect. Thanks to the experience gained with the Vespa 946 project, the Piaggio Style Centre has carried out important, innovative work on the surfaces and sections of the bodywork, coming up with assertive design features that, without betraying the flowing form that every Vespa must have, still manage to add a new touch of up-to-date sparkle.
The Vespa Primavera inherits the exclusive, refined elegance of the Vespa 946 and maintains that formal spirit. But, despite adopting the special characteristics of the most prized Vespa of all time, it doesn't sacrifice the practicality and comfort of a Vespa for everyday use - the daily star of city journeys. The Vespa Primavera uses the best technology of its time. Its design and development are greatly advanced compared with previous generations: the overall dimensions are the same as those that marked the success of the Vespa LX, but an increase in some fundamental specific dimensions optimises the ergonomics, habitability and ease of use.
The central part, with its distinguishing omega shape, improves the riding position and gives the most modern Vespa a clear style feature taken from the story of legendary models; it rises like a “backbone” up to the base of the handlebar. It's an elegant throwback to the “Vespini” of the ’60s and ‘70s, where the metal structure supporting the shield and steering equipment was left visible. The footrest is now narrower at the sides and, together with the reduced height of the saddle, allows riders of any height to easily rest their feet on the ground.
A glance at the Primavera immediately brings to mind the most classic Vespa style; the Primavera adopts it with ease but, without indulging in over-easy vintage references, interprets it with an eye to the future. The tail is again pointed and tapered, just like on the first prototype that inspired the name "Vespa" because of its similarity to a wasp. The extended taillight also helps to give the body a streamlined appearance. The alternating convex and concave lines of the bodywork respect the most classic Vespa standards but, thanks to a painstaking study of the reflections generated on them by the light, they now express a definite modern feel. Soft, rounded forms blend with the tension of sharp lines that give the entire vehicle an extra touch of vitality.
The turn indicators and LED daylight running lights are not excessively large, leaving space for the front shield; they are elegantly fitted flush with the bodywork, to avoid interfering with the clean lines of the Vespa Primavera. The distribution of the handlebar coverings has been revolutionised compared with the most recent Vespa models, taking up the classic horizontal divide (typical of the most famous Vespas) once again.
The handlebar commands for the main functions have been inserted in true “cuffs” which, thanks to the chrome-plating, seem to be separated from the rest (also from an aesthetic viewpoint) and explicitly echo that element which acted as a gear/clutch unit on the left side of the handlebar on the most classic models.T he electronic part uses state-of-the-art technology but within the trapezoidal lines of the classic Vespa instruments. The front, circular headlight has a chrome-plated ring nut on the edge - one of the clearest stylistic elements of the first version of the Vespa Primavera, while the modern, elegant tail-light uses LED technology.
Following in the footsteps of the Vespa tradition, the flat, two-seat saddle is now more comfortable and practical, with the double stitching that distinguishes refined Italian leatherwork. The rear part is surrounded by the passenger grab handle and made, of course, in the traditional and unmistakable chromium pipe.

The Primavera colours (MonteBianco White, Blue Midnight, Dragon Red, Crete Senesi Brown, Marechiaro Light Blue and Vulcan Black) are also a throwback to the Vespa memory, playing with the three exclusive saddle colours to create refined new colour combinations that further enhance the new Primavera. The design of the 11” alloy wheel rims is entirely new and, despite respecting the traditional number of five spokes, manages to reinterpret a classic Vespa element.

TECHNOLOGY: A REVOLUTIONARY PRIMAVERA
All-new, more rigid body. The steel sheet bodywork, that also acts as a support, is the element that makes the Vespa stand out from every other scooter in the world. The Vespa Primavera body is completely new, although it maintains a loyalty to a unique construction philosophy and consists of pressed, welded parts.
The precise design has produced previously unseen levels of rigidity, but without compromising the weight of the structure. The new position of the battery (in the central side member of the footrest) has increased the capacity of the helmet compartment to 16.6 litres (from 14.3 in the previous Vespa), further facilitating access to the engine for maintenance work (just be raising the helmet compartment).

A new engine mounting system reduces vibrations. The engine is mounted on the body with a system of 2-position arms (only one position on the previous version) and uses a stop with double rubber absorption damper. As a result, the rider feels a notable reduction in vibrations in the various contact points (saddle, knobs and footrest).
New front suspension. Despite maintaining the classic Vespa single arm suspension, the new Primavera has a completely redesigned system for reducing slide friction. The shock absorber is now fixed to the aluminium support that connects it to the wheel via a hinged pin, whereas before (on the Vespa LX) it was fixed with two screws. For the driver, this technical innovation means far less friction and so greater comfort.

NEW 3-VALVE ENGINES
In the 125 cc and 150 cc versions, the Vespa Primavera is powered by an ultra-modern 3-valve engine - a family of engines that represents the most advanced technological step forward in the world of scooters, way ahead of its time in terms of excellent performance and minimum consumption and emission levels.
The heart of the Vespa Primavera 125/150 cc is a 4-stroke single cylinder air-cooled engine with a 3-valve (2 intake and 1 exhaust) single overhead cam and electronic fuel injection. It was designed and built in the Pontedera plant - one of the most advanced research & development centres in the world - with the goal of increasing performance and fuel economy while lowering polluting emissions. To ensure optimum performance levels, a painstaking study was carried out to reduce friction and improve the fluid dynamics.
The new crankshaft, with reduced button and bench capacity, the pivoted cam axle on bearings and the roller rockers have made a significant improvement in operating friction, all to the benefit of performance and fuel economy. The new bore and stroke values (respectively reduced and increased in relation to the previous 4-stroke engines) mean improved torque and acceleration response. In the search for the best performance/fuel consumption ratio, the 3 valve timing solution is the most effective because it improves intake, increasing engine efficiency compared to conventional 2 valve engines. The 3V distribution enables better fuel mixture loading movements in the cylinder; the combustion process is further refined by the new spark plug position, which simultaneously ensures improved cooling of the components in the head, as well as simplified maintenance.
The cooling system was the object of careful analysis, even through thermo fluid dynamic simulations, in order to further improve performance and thereby obtaining a significant reduction in mechanical noise and absorbed power. The electronic injection system on the Vespa Primavera is entirely new. An ultra-modern and technologically advanced unit designed by Piaggio specifically for this latest Vespa model.
The new free wheel electric starter, more quiet and efficient, goes perfectly with an engine so rich with technological content. Also, the automatic dry centrifugal clutch has been calibrated with the goal of maximizing performance and fuel economy at low speeds. The Primavera has a new CVT (purposely designed for the new Vespa) to reduce engine rotations when shifting up from a low gear to a high one. This reduces the gear change speed, improving consumption levels and comfort without compromising the excellent pick-up and acceleration that distinguish the long 4-stroke engine. The 3V also has the important advantage of weighing less than its 2V predecessor. The extremely low fuel consumption figures (up to 64 km/l at an average speed of 50 km/h) and lengthy maintenance gaps (service every 10,000 km) mean very low running costs.

PHOTO GALLERY

The new Primavera is the youngest of the Vespa family; the true great grandchild of the legendary 50cc Vespini with which the first Primavera (from the 60's) shared the same dimensions and bodywork. The Vespa Primavera is also designed for youngsters, for those starting out with their first Vespa on the search for freedom. For these young Vespa enthusiasts, the new Primavera offers the choice of two engines, both 50 cc: a fun, sparkling 2-stroke and a modern, advanced 4-stroke with 4-valve distribution.
The 2-stroke 50 cc engine in the Hi-Per2 series is intended for riders looking for more brilliant performance, perfect for getting around quickly in the city. The 4-stroke 50 cc engine boasts modern 4 valve timing that provides more lively acceleration: it is, in fact, the most powerful 4-stroke 50 cc engine on the market, with its 4.35 HP produced in a very linear way, along with excellent fuel economy and limited polluting emissions.

Characterised by the innovative and patented exclusive two front wheel technology, the Piaggio Mp3 tackles bends and road hazards with extraordinary stability and amazing road holding. Agile as a traditional scooter, the Piaggio Mp3 offers a new level of sporty and fun riding, always in complete safety.

So far, more than 130,000 Piaggio Mp3 units have been sold around the globe with simply extraordinary peaks of popularity in large European cities such as Paris, Milan, Frankfurt and Berlin. This is the resounding success due to the exclusive Piaggio dual independent tilting front wheel technology, thanks to the four bar linkage suspension which the leading Group in Europe designed and developed before any other manufacturer in the world to ensure maximum riding pleasure in complete safety. Piaggio Mp3 is available in the Business LT and Sport LT versions, with dedicated finishes and colours and both can be driven with a car license only.
“Two front wheels”: a definition which not only indicates the peculiar characteristic of Piaggio Mp3 scooters but also suggests the technological superiority that the revolutionary Piaggio Group “three wheeler” has managed to affirm. Two front wheels to travel in total safety in any weather or road surface conditions and at the same time have fun riding just as on a conventional two-wheeled vehicle. For the first time, with Piaggio Mp3, automotive safety meets motorcycle riding pleasure. The public has demonstrated great appreciation on a global level for the Piaggio Mp3: more than 130,000 units sold worldwide; in the period from January to August 2013 about 6,000 units were sold in France (where it is the undisputed top seller in its category), a result that takes the number of units sold worldwide in the same period of time to 10,000. On the crest of this great success Piaggio developed and built multiple versions and engine sizes in order to meet any and all mobility needs: from the Hybrid, the world's first with parallel hybrid engine and plug-in technology, to the Yourban version, the leanest and most urban Piaggio Mp3 version. Scarabeo became an instant classic, a one of a kind product that has evolved to keep ahead of its rivals while remaining true to itself. New technologies have made the engines increasingly cleaner and more efficient over the years. Scarabeo 50 4 Valve has a technological, powerful and refined core. This tiny engineering gem employs state of the art solutions to deliver class leading power. At 3.2 kW (4.35 HP), is the most powerful 50 cc 4 stroke on the market. The braking system is top notch, ensuring absolute safety in all conditions. The 220 mm front disc brake adopts a floating calliper with a 30 mm piston, while the rear drum brake has a large diameter: measuring 140 mm, for precise, modular braking in all situations. Scarabeo 50 4 Valve offers class leading levels of equipment and does everything possible to facilitate the life of its user, With features such as an extra long and well padded saddle, an automatic starter and a fuel tank with a generous 8.5 litre capacity which, together with the reduced consumption of the new 4 Valve engine, offers an incredible range. Behind the leg shield is a small compartment for carrying vital necessities. Contributing significantly to safety is the outstanding visibility offered by the high output motorcycle-type polyfocal headlamp with clear lens. The instrument panel features a comprehensive array of instruments and indicators.

Its design has been skilfully reviewed during the course of its development which began back in 1993, and today is a perfect mix of classical lines and hi-tech elements which make it unique in its category. This is true of the LED rear light unit, elegant and safe with the brighter beam of light it produces, the turn indicators with white glass and satin finish stems, the redesigned instrument panel and refined alloy rims that maintain a family feeling with the original models but are lighter in weight.
Thanks to a robust tubular frame in high strength steel, the Scarabeo 100 offers pace-setting manoeuvrability and unparalleled stability. With a generous 78 mm of stroke, the telescopic hydraulic fork smooths out even the bumpiest of roads. On the Scarabeo, comfort and precision come together in perfect harmony. This is also thanks to the rear suspension with its robust, adjustable hydraulic shock absorber with a good 81.5 mm of stroke. With their reduced steering inertia, the extremely light rims optimise handling. The braking system ensures absolute safety in all conditions. The 220 mm front disc brake adopts a floating calliper with a 30 mm piston, while the rear drum brake has a large diameter: measuring 140 mm, for precise, modular braking in all situations.
The Scarabeo 100 engine has become a classic in the world production of scooters. A horizontal single-cylinder 96.2 cc four stroke with forced air cooling and a two-valve timing system and a power that offers fuel consumption similar to that of a 50 cc but the performance of a 125, make this engine particularly interesting for anyone who wants "something extra" without having to look for a bigger engine, with increased weight and running costs.

The long saddle further improves comfort. The handles incorporated in the rear luggage rack give passengers a comfortable and safe grip and make it easy to lift the Scarabeo onto its stand for parking. Scarabeo is equipped with everything that makes everyday life in the city easier: it has an automatic starter and the fuel tank holds 8.5 litres, for excellent autonomy avoiding frequent refuelling. The leg shield compartment is big enough to hold all the items you need close at hand. The clear glass, polyfocal, motorcycle style headlight projects an intense light beam, with dipped and high-beam positions. The instrument panel has new graphics and guarantees full, instantly readable information: visibility of the instrument panel is excellent in any condition, especially at night, when the specific backlighting makes all the indications provided easy to read with the available instruments and warning lights which provide thorough monitoring at all times. The Scarabeo 100 offers a spacious top box as standard, which is big enough to hold a jet helmet.

SCARABEO 125/200 ie: TOP PERFORMANCES

Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. strives to be the ideal vehicle to meet any needs of modern transportation, from the home-work commute to a longer ride in the countryside, standing out for its elegant style and great practicality, accompanied by brilliant performance and comfort levels at the top of its category. Its unique design, a classic example of Italian style, once again blazes a trail to which all the others aspire; Its refinement of construction outdistances everything that is "simply a scooter".
The stylistic/functional characteristics of the Scarabeo 125/200 ie make it an easily recognisable cooter, starting from the shield on which the new oval grille stands out immediately at first glance: clearly reminiscent of the classic Scarabeo family styling and at the same of a refined aesthetic choice aimed at lightening the entire front end and providing it with a certain elegance. The front turn indicators "drop down" to the base of the handlebar – in a more visible position – at the same time leaving space for a light design of the front handlebar cover, where a brand new pair of chromium mirrors are mounted. The front mudguard has grooving, which, in addition to enhancing the design, carries out the important function of optimising air flow to the radiator. The soft lines of the front end meet up with the decisive sections of the rear through the side panel oval – an indispensable element in the Scarabeo design – in a drop of continuity and contrast, which inspires harmony from the very first look. The entire tail is light, as is the design of the taillight, and it holds a convenient saddle which is split into two independent seats: this is a solution which, together with the internal foam, significantly enhances the comfort level for both rider and passenger.
Comfort which is guaranteed on Scarabeo by the windshield integrated into the handlebar – provided standard from the factory – and by the indispensable flat footrest which, together with the sturdy and lightweight aluminium luggage rack and the practical helmet compartment, allows the cargo capacity to be increased to unexpected levels for such a small and agile high wheeled scooter. The totally complete analogue-digital instrument panel offers an actual on-board computer that can be controlled directly from the handlebar. Standing out amongst the many available options is the outside temperature reading with "ice warning" that alerts the rider to any ice present. The stand has been designed to provide extremely favourable leverage: parking the Scarabeo is child's play.
As has always been true for the Scarabeo, once again its classic line embraces the best of available technology. The Scarabeo 125/200 ie engine was designed and developed expressly for this scooter. A cutting-edge, lightweight, rational and clean engine, capable of combining excellent performance with high fuel economy and characterised by an extremely low vibration level and minimum level emissions, in line with the Scarabeo environmentally friendly philosophy. Both the engines are liquid cooled and adopt four valve, dual overhead cam timing, a refined solution which optimises engine performance.
The use of electronic fuel injection provides great benefits from both a performance point of view – top speed, pick up and acceleration – as well as on the fuel economy front. Furthermore, Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. provides the rider with the opportunity to choose from two mappings. Directly from the handlebar the user can select the ECO mode, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 7%, or the SPORT mode, which optimises performance.
The 200 engine boasts an impressive 19 HP (14 kW) at 9,000 rpm, with extremely favourable torque (17.1 Nm at 7,000 rpm) which give the Scarabeo a brilliant ride in acceleration, but also relaxing and safe in any conditions. The 125 cc engine produces the maximum power output permitted by law for its capacity, and can be ridden with just a normal category B driver's license. Responsive but safe driving is ensured by its 14.3 HP (10.5 kW), along with its particularly light weight - the Scarabeo is one of the lightest vehicles of its category.
Scarabeo's classic and fashionable style have never hindered the engineers in the chassis department: Scarabeo 125/200 ie was conceived with the goal of confirming those unique characteristics in terms of an easy ride, performance and safety, which have made Scarabeo an icon of urban mobility. The credit for this result can be attributed to the steel tube frame's high indexes of torsional rigidity and sturdiness and to the perfect fine tuning of the suspension, capable of ensuring maximum feeling and excellent shock absorption. The hydraulic telescopic fork has 35 mm diameter stanchions, while the rear is the engine-transmission unit itself, assisted by a secondary aluminium arm which takes on the role of the swingarm: this is a simple and lightweight solution, and yet efficient at the same time, thanks in part to the possibility of adjusting the spring pre-load to four positions depending on the transported weight and the user's riding style.
The five spoke wheels, with their elegant style, are shod with 16 inch high shoulder Michelin tubeless tyres (100/80 on the front and 120/80 on the rear); this is the perfect match to navigate all those city obstacles which also gives the bike excellent stability and an intuitive ride, accessible to riders with any level of experience.
The braking system is made up of a 260 mm disc on the front, with a triple piston floating calliper, and 220 mm on the rear with a twin piston fixed calliper, working with an integral braking system capable of distributing the braking action between the two wheels and ensuring contained stopping distances, all to the advantage of active safety.

AN ITALIAN STORY

1993. The first Scarabeo (50cc) produced in Noale by Aprilia debuts at the International Motor Show in Milan: with its original design, the Scarabeo is an immediate best-seller.

1994–1998. The Scarabeo project dominates the market. New colours and technical advances improve the range: the Scarabeo is one of the first high-wheel vehicles with rear disk brakes.

2003. Ten years after its launch, the Scarabeo continues to be a reflection of its times: Aprilia presents the Scarabeo 500, a true benchmark in the touring category.

2005. With annual sales up to 70,000 vehicles and at least a dozen imitations, the Scarabeo reaches the threshold of 250,000 registered models.

2009. Two new models join the Scarabeo range: the 4-valve Scarabeo 50 and the Scarabeo 300 Special. The former features a powerful, technologically advanced new engine; the latter is the natural completion of the range, with a modern displacement.

2011. The year of the highly successful communication campaign “Il 13° Segno – The sign of you”. At top events like the MTV Awards, the Scarabeo fits in perfectly with a youthful public.

Today. Over the years the Scarabeo has gradually acquired a larger engine and extended its range, establishing a reputation as a highly versatile vehicle for the mobility needs of an increasingly sophisticated clientele. The Scarabeo’s success continues, with 750,000 vehicles produced in its first twenty years.

FIGURES REVEALED BY THE PIAGGIO GROUP AT THE SALON DE LA MOTO IN PARIS CONFIRM LEADERSHIP ON THE FRENCH SCOOTER MARKET

FROM JANUARY TO OCTOBER:
158,000 VESPAS SOLD AROUND THE WORLD
MORE THAN 1,200,000 SHIPMENTS IN LESS THAN TEN YEARS

French debut at the “Salon de la Moto” in Paris (3-8 December, Paris Expo at Porte de Versailles) for the new and eagerly awaited Vespa Primavera. Unveiled for a global preview less than a month earlier at the Milan 2013 EICMA International Motor Show, where it quickly became the star attraction, the Vespa Primavera is now being marketed all over Europe and – following a presentation last week in Hanoi – in Vietnam and Asian countries as well.
Produced in the Piaggio Group Pontedera plant in the Italian province of Pisa for all the Western markets, for the first time in Vespa history the Primavera is also manufactured simultaneously in the Vinh Phuc plant near Hanoi, where the Piaggio Group produces its scooters for the Vietnamese and South-East Asian markets.

SMART AND ECOLOGICAL
With a radically new design, a new all-steel body, new dimensions, as compact and agile as its namesake from 1968, but even more stable and comfortable than the Vespa LX model t replaces in the range, the Vespa Primavera is powered by ultra-modern and ecological 4- and 2-stroke 50cc, and 4-stroke, 3-valve 125cc and 150cc engines. Young, innovative, technologically on the cutting edge, the Vespa Primavera incorporates some stylistic and technical solutions of the Vespa 946, the most luxurious, expensive and technologically advanced model ever designed in Vespa history.
The launch of the new Primavera coincides with one of the busiest and most important moments of this extraordinary Italian brand's life, in the year that also saw the début of the Vespa 946, which, after its presentation in Europe and Asia, was introduced to the North American market at a launch on 5th Avenue in Manhattan on 25 October.

RECORD SALES
The record offer of new products is matched by record sales: in fact, from January to October 2013, the Vespa brand exceeded the exceptional number of more than 158,000 scooters sold worldwide, 20,600 vehicles more than the roughly 137,000 sold in the first ten months of 2012.
This is further confirmation of the extraordinary progress the Vespa brand has made in the last ten years: from 2004, when overall sales reached 58,000 units, numbers rose to 100,000 in 2006, 122,000 in 2009 and 165,000 Vespas manufactured in 2012, a record which is about to be broken in 2013.
In less than ten years, from 1 January 2004 to 31 October 2013, a total of 1,207,827 Vespas have been sold worldwide. This extraordinary number, unattainable by any other European two-wheeler brand, demonstrates that today’s Vespa, like the historical models from the 1940s and 1950s, is a global vehicle, a protagonist that has enjoyed non-stop success for more than sixty years.

THE REVOLUTIONARY MP3
The Piaggio Group was also at the Paris Bike Show with another vehicle that has enjoyed significant international success: the Piaggio Mp3, the vehicle that revolutionised the scooter world with the three-wheel solution, synonymous today with safety, reliability and performance. The Piaggio Mp3, introduced in the Business and Sport versions in Paris, confirmed its position as a key player in the over 50cc segment once again in 2013.
The Piaggio Group three-wheeler family at the Salon de la Moto is the broadest range in the world, able to meet any needs with the 300 and 500cc engines of the Mp3, as well as the lighter Mp3 Yourban 300 and the powerful Gilera Fuoco 500, which can all be driven with a standard car driving license.

FRANCE LOVES THE PIAGGIO “THREE-WHEELER”
Since its début in mid-2006, the Piaggio Group three-wheeler line has sold a total of 140,000 vehicles. The Mp3 has been extraordinarily successful in the French market, where the Piaggio Group three wheeler range increased its market share in the over 50cc scooter segment from 15 to 16% in 2013.
Thanks to the sales performance of this type of product, Piaggio France has reaffirmed its position as leader of the scooter market again this year, with an overall market share of 22.9%, rising to 32% in the over 50cc scooter segment.

A Manhattan event in Bulgari’s flagship store on 5th Avenue

NEW YORK: GLAMOUR LAUNCH FOR THE VESPA 946 IN THE USA

A splendid party enlivened the heart of Manhattan to celebrate the arrival of the Vespa 946 in the USA. 24 October 2013 was the date of the scooter’s official American launch, in the prestigious venue of the Bulgari flagship store on 5th Avenue. The event attracted the Big Apple’s top celebrities: designers, fashion photographers, trendsetters and journalists gathered to toast the most luxurious Vespa ever produced. The evening was a tribute to Italian design and style, with music and a menu devised for the occasion by chef John DeLucie, one of the new names in the New York restaurant scene. Shantell Martin provided an artistic touch (see the Art column, ed.), with the elegance of her black and white creations matching the exclusive liveries of the luxurious Vespa 946 2013 collection, “Ricordo Italiano”.

So the prestigious Bulgari store played host to the first models of the Vespa 946 to arrive in the States, paying homage to one of the icons of Italian design. The event also consolidated the wonderful success the Vespa is enjoying on world markets today.
After its presentation in Europe and the main Asian countries, the 946 has finally made its debut on the US market (where it retails for 9,946 dollars), and now sells at global level.
The 2013 edition of the Vespa 946 is a limited series of 3,600 scooters for all world markets, whose production at the Pontedera factory ended in November. As work proceeds on the Vespa 946 2014 Collection, the Vespa 946 scooters built in 2013 have become unique, one-off pieces.

“2013 has been a remarkable year for Vespa,” said Piaggio Group Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno during the New York presentation. “The exclusive 946 scooter has been flanked with a completely new model, launched at the EICMA Motor Show in Milan, whose name, chosen to highlight its style content, is the name of a legendary two-wheeler, one of the most important in the history of the world’s most famous scooter: Vespa Primavera”.
“Our offer of new models, each one reprising the original Vespa design but combining this with innovative style and technology elements, and the development of new industrial and commercial initiatives around the world, are the key to the growing success of this outstanding brand in the last few years,” Colaninno added.
In the USA, the arrival of the Vespa 946 enhances the offer of Piaggio Group Americas, whose New York head office manages marketing of all Piaggio Group brands in North, Central and South America. The benchmark player on the US scooter market with a 23.1% market share, rising to 36.5% in the over 50cc scooter segment, in the first nine months of 2013 Piaggio Group Americas shipped a total of more than 13,300 vehicles in North and Latin America for all Group brands (scooters and motorcycles), an increase of 7.7% on shipments in the first nine months of 2012.
In addition to the sales subsidiary, in the USA the Piaggio Group also operates an R&D centre on the West Coast, established in 2012. The Piaggio Group Advanced Design Center in Pasadena (California) works closely with the Piaggio Group Style Centre in Pontedera and the Group R&D centres in Italy, China, India and Vietnam, and was set up to follow not just the cutting edge of style, but also advanced research projects in urban mobility technology, with a special focus on low-and zero-emission engines and use of alternative energies.

AWARD: VESPA 946 INCLUDED AMONG 2013’S “BEST STUFF” BY THE US EDITION OF GQ

The American press celebrates the most luxurious and technologically advanced Vespa in the history of the Italian scooter

The December issue of GQ USA, out in the news-stands now, includes the Vespa 946 among the "Best Stuff" of 2013. This is the tenth edition of an annual ranking of the world's most desirable objects.
In an article with the title "Don't call it a comeback, or a moped" about the 946, the most luxurious Vespa ever produced, whose US market launch was held a few weeks ago, the magazine writes: "The scooters that Vespa sent to America back in 2001 were, well, cute. Then came this fall's 946, a potent blend of old-world sex appeal and modern comforts. The sculpted seat cantilevers over tapered panels that stretch like Sophia Loren's legs, while up front you'll find a digital speedo and the first LED headlight in scooter history. Go ahead, indulge your Dolce Vita paparazzo fantasy – or at least make your commutes a lot less boring."
The glowing review from the US magazine joins many other tributes in the American press's most glamorous publications celebrating the arrival of the Vespa 946 from across the ocean. An eagerly awaited two-wheeler, immediately hailed as one of the most shining examples of "made in Italy".
The American on-line edition of Vogue includes the Vespa 946, in its chic Montebianco livery, in a photogallery of "Utterly Perfect Presents – Wonderful things for all your loved ones and – oh yes – for you!".
"Today, the 946 sits at the apex of a line of 11 Vespa models", writes The New York Times, while The Wall Street Journal proclaims: "This top-of-the-line model, the company's most dramatic redesign in six years, smooths out the more defined lines these scooters have traditionally sported, resulting in an almost Jetsonian flair".
According to Maxim magazine, the Vespa is "the sexiest things on two wheels" and the Los Angeles Times describes it as " an elegant delight that is going to turn heads".
The online magazine Design Milk, a benchmark for architecture, style and design, has no doubts: "While the 946 pays homage to Vespa's history, it definitely feels modern and tad bit futuristic".
LuxuryLaunches.com doesn't beat about the bush: " it is truly Italian luxury on wheels!".

In the last 2013 issue of the magazine, we look at the events held in Asia Pacific, which were also organised to enhance the presence of the Vespa brand in the region.

INDONESIA

“Love the history, ride the future” was the slogan for the 946 launch in Indonesia, held on 18 September in Sampoerna Strategic Square, a prestigious business centre in Jakarta. The press conference, moderated by Timothy Marbun, a famous TV news anchor man, included an exhibition on the story of the Vespa and a grand finale with a cocktail party attended by more than 400 guests from Indonesian high society: entrepreneurs, dealers, VIPS; one of the highlights of the evening was a performance by Vina Panduwinata, one of Indonesia’s best known singers.

JAPAN

The Hyatt Regency in Tokyo provided the setting for the Japanese press launch on 6 August. In addition to the Vespa 946, the event saw the presentation of the Aprilia SRV 850 and the Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport 4V ABS and V7 Special.

THAILAND

At the St Regis in Bangkok, on 5 October, a launch event was held for journalists, business partners, VIPs, collectors and guests of the Vespiario importer. During the event, a number of Thai artists presented their works, some of which were put up for sale at a charity auction.

TAIWAN

The date was at the Vespa West-Taipei Flagship showroom on 27 September, with VIPs, media and dealers hosted by partner Taikoo Motors. The launch included the official handover of the keys to the first Vespa 946 customer: Mr Hsu.

COREA

On 30 August, at the West Hall Luxury Gallery in Seoul (a mall housing the top international fashion names), the Vespa 946 was presented to the press and television, capturing star billing.

IN AUSTRALIA, ON THE GOLD COAST

Mantra on Salt Beach, a luxury resort south of Brisbane on Australia’s Gold Cost, is a surfer’s paradise on the Coral Sea. It provided the setting for the celebrations marking the Australian debut of the Vespa 946, from 14 to 27 August 2013.

The launch was a multiple event: press conferences for dealers and the trade press from across the country, and gala dinners attended by high-profile personalities. The object was to build ties with the dealer network and the press, and enhance the Vespa brand image with the superlative Vespa 946. Object achieved, in the certainty that the guests will remember the experience as a truly exclusive event.

Vespa 946 Italy Tour

It was an unforgettable summer for the Vespa 946 2013 collection “Ricordo Italiano”. The scooter was seen at some of Italy’s loveliest beach resorts, including Porto Cervo in Sardinia, Porto Ercole in Tuscany, Taormina in Sicily, and in art cities including Rome, Lucca and Pisa. It was guest of honour at cocktail parties and jazz evenings, wherever glamour and style held sway.
In marketing jargon, the tour was an example of “luxury placement in prestigious locations”. The event “format” envisaged an extended display (seven days in each location) of the Vespa 946 scooters in their exclusive black and white liveries, on personalised stands, and an evening opening event with cocktails and music, where hostesses distributed glossy brochures on the most luxurious and technologically advanced Vespa ever.

The Italy Tour’s tightly packed itinerary began in Rome (11-17 July), with poolside cocktails at the Sheraton Rome hotel. The Vespa 946 scooters were subsequently displayed in the lobby. The next location was the Argentario Golf Club in Porto Ercole (18-25 July), with an evening event and exhibition in the golf house. Four scooters were present in Porto Cervo, at the You Restaurant & Lounge Bar in the old port, where they were admired by VIPs from the worlds of entertainment and business (25 July-31 August). This was followed by an exhibit in Taormina, at the Grand Hotel Metropole (5-12 September), with a drinks party in the pool lounge bar area.
The autumn began in Tuscany (20 September-31 October), in Lucca, where two Vespa 946 scooters were displayed during the “Henry Cartier-Bresson. Photographer” exhibition at the Lu.c.c.a-Lucca Center of Contemporary Art. The exhibition opening was a memorable event: dinner based on a tasting menu devised by “starred” chef Cristiano Tomei was followed by live theatre, music and contemporary art performances interpreting the story of the Vespa. In Pisa, on 25 October, a “Vespa, musica e passione” concert was organised in the Motorteam dealer showroom: after a buffet, a Vespa Jazz evening was presented by Eugenio Leone, with a highly applauded performance by the Dixie Band Pontedera. The evening was closed by Vespa rider and champion Giuseppe Cau and friends from the Pisa Vespa Club.

FROM EUROPE TO ASIA, THE “STAR” OF THE MILAN SHOW MAKES ITS INTERNATIONAL MARKET DEBUT

BARCELONA: WORLD PRESS LAUNCH
OF THE NEW VESPA PRIMAVERA

The eagerly awaited Vespa Primavera has made its international market debut. Unveiled at a world preview at the 2013 EICMA International Motor Show in Milan (5-10 November), where it quickly achieved star billing, the Vespa Primavera immediately began shipping across Europe. It was presented to the world press at a three-day event on the streets in central Barcelona, from 12 to 14 November.

Produced in the Piaggio Group factory in Pontedera, in the Italian province of Pisa, for all Western markets, the Primavera is the first model in the history of the Vespa also to be built in the Vinh Phuc factory near Hanoi, where the Piaggio Group manufactures its scooters for the Vietnamese and South East Asian markets.
The new Vespa Primavera incorporates all the values that, forty-five years ago, decreed the success of the original Primavera. The first Vespa with this name appeared in 1968 and sparked a revolution: small, nimble, powered by a lively engine, the Primavera gave wings to a succession of generations and remained in production until 1982, acquiring the status of legend and becoming one of the most astonishing blockbusters in the history of the Vespa.
Young, innovative, technologically cutting edge, agile and dynamic, a friend of the environment, its modern-day descendant – also called the Vespa Primavera – is a star of its time, inheriting all the freshness and joie di vivre of the original. A radically new design, all-steel body, new dimensions, as agile as ever but even more stable and comfortable, powered by state-of-the-art, eco-sustainable 4- and 2-stroke 50cc and 4-stroke, 3-valve 125cc and 150cc engines, the Vespa Primavera incorporates some of the stylistic and technical solutions of the Vespa 946, the most luxurious, expensive and technologically advanced model in the history of the Vespa.
The launch of the new Primavera comes during one of the most fortunate periods in the history of this extraordinary Italian brand, which this year also saw the debut of the Vespa 946, presented on the North American market in Manhattan’s 5th Avenue on 24 October, after its presentation in Europe and Asia.
Besides its arrival on the roads of Europe and South East Asia, on the first day of the EICMA show the Vespa Primavera also made its web debut, with a lavish presentation on the official Vespa.com website. In addition to photos of the new scooter, as always the global Vespa site provides a complete configurator, and a series of videos showing the latest entry in the Vespa range in action in Italy’s most famous squares and streets, together with an exceptional documentary illustrating the production of the Vespa, from the first steel sheet to the final touches on the Pontedera assembly lines.

In the evening, the Vespa Primavera was a star at the Butterfly “Do Manh Cuong Fashion Show” for the presentation of the new autumn/winter fashion collection. The fashion show was held at the Phu My Hung International Exhibition Centre (HCM City), attended by the top names from Vietnam’s fashion community, movie and TV stars, models and celebrities.

Her work, including white helmets covered with black phrases encouraging optimism and self-awareness, was on exhibit in the Bulgari showroom on the Big Apple’s Fifth Avenue for the “American launch” of the Vespa 946. Where “Ricordo Italiano”, the 2013 collection of the most beautiful scooter in the world, is fascinating visitors in a top fashion look available in just two colours, total white and total black. So Shantell’s black and white art was the perfect choice to give an artistic touch to the Vespa launch party.

One of New York’s emerging young artists, Martin has also shown her work at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art): born in London 33 years ago, she moved to New York in 2008 from Tokyo, where she had established a career as a visual jockey, a digital artist for Japan’s music élite. Arriving in Brooklyn, she wondered about her future. On the back of her door she began writing “WHO ARE YOU?”, and replying “ARE YOU YOU?”, finally arriving at “YOU ARE YOU”, an affirmation of her identity and personality. This has become her “trademark”, together with the faces, airplanes, lines and phrases Shantell replicates on design objects, blankets, clothes, shoes, helmets. She recently welcomed The New Yorker to her Soho studio to be interviewed by Sky Dylan Robbins; on its website, the celebrated magazine also published the video “Follow the pen”. Shantell’s pen has taken her far, to a meeting with the iconic Vespa, which has won a place in a prestigious ranking: the 12 objects that have made world design history in the last 100 years. The ranking was based on the opinions of worldwide experts consulted by the US TV station CNN.

The whole package is personalised with exclusive graphics hand painted by British urban artist Susie “Suzko” Lowe, who joined fashion photographer Jay McLaughlin for the artistic part of the project. Susie has decorated each white Vespa LX 50 by hand, with highly coloured patterns, reproduced on the Vespa helmet and the Olympus camera. Needless to say, the package is a limited edition and the Vespa scooters personalised by Suzko have already become a collector’s item. Photos and video clip.

Interview
One of the top names in Italian and international soccer, with a future as a coach and sports entrepreneur, tells Wide about his plans, and reveals his passion for the world’s most famous scooter

Gianluca Zambrotta
a world champion on a Vespa

Gianluca Zambrotta is one of the top names in Italian and international soccer of recent years. A member of the Italian national team that won the FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006, and was European runner-up in 2000, he is considered one of the best outfielders in the history of Italian football.
Zambrotta first began playing on the pitch of his home town, Como, and ended with Milan last season, after several years with Juventus and two championships with FC Barcelona. During his splendid career, Zambrotta has won the Italian championship three times (twice with Juventus and once with Milan), three Italian Supercups (twice with Juventus and once with Milan) and one Spanish Supercup, during his time with Barcelona. In 2006, after Italy’s victory in the World Cup in Germany, he was voted one of the world’s 23 best footballers in the All Star Team.
After such a successful career, Zambrotta is now preparing for a new life as a coach. Having just notched up a new professional triumph, attainment of a UEFA Pro licence (enabling him to become a coach at the highest levels of professional football), he still finds the time to cultivate his passion for the Vespa, a scooter he has always loved and collected.

Wide met Zambrotta at home, where, in a house full of souvenirs from his great sporting career, he also reveals a passion for Italian design and engines. The latest arrival is an electric Ape Calessino van. On the eve of a new career as a trainer, Zambrotta has become involved in another great venture: the construction of a sports centre in Como, offering competitive and non-competitive training in a variety of sports.

You’re one of the few sportsmen to have invested in sport, repaying what sport has given you with your experience. What led you to take on this entrepreneurial project, which is obviously inspired by your love of football?
“Without doubt, a desire to pass on my great passion for football, which has given me so much. I’d like to help give everyone an interest in sport, especially young people, as well as the not so young, because sport is an extraordinary school for life. I want to help everyone practice a sport, and I’ve decided to do this with a latest-generation sports centre in Como, the city where I was born, to be called the Eracle Sports Centre.”

Eracle Sports Center

Football underwent significant changes over the years you were playing. Both from a technical perspective – the way teams play has changed completely – and in terms of global popularity. Although many people think it’s just a huge business, what values can still be cultivated in children who are just beginning to play and dreaming perhaps of a future in the World Cup, which is what happened to you?
“You’re right, things have changed compared with years ago, but not just in football. Today the whole world is moving too fast. That makes it even more important to find a way to transmit the healthiest principles and the best values, which you find in sport. Friendship, respect for your opponent, willingness to make a sacrifice, fun, hard work, commitment, passion, a big heart, guts, determination, humility. I could go on and on, these are the values of people who are passionate about their sport.”

In your career, you’ve won everything there was to win, but I suspect the German World Cup has a special place in your heart…
“It’s the most important trophy in my career, the best, and emotionally the one that means the most to me. Winning with the shirt of a well-known club is marvellous, but winning with the colours of your national team is a unique sensation, even for a professional.”

That victory took Italy to the top of the world. And the world’s perception of our country stems from its excellences, from design, which you love, to sport. You’ve travelled the world wearing the Italian team shirt: what do you think lies at the root of this leadership?
“The passion and conviction we put into everything and the excellence and attention we pay to the smallest details. These values are part of our national character, and are acknowledged everywhere.”

Talking about Italian excellences, did you know that in America CNN has named the Vespa as one of the 12 best designs of the last 100 years. Does your passion for the Vespa come from your love of design?
“Yes of course. I think the Vespa is a real icon of Italian design, one of the most widely admired. It’s a timeless object, famous all over the world. When you say Vespa you say Italy, freedom, excellence, style, design. It’s a must: it would be difficult today not to have one, or at least want one!”

How many Vespa scooters do you have in your garage? Is there one you’re particularly fond of?
“I’ve had so many … I’ve got four at the moment. Two vintage models and two current models. As well as a limited edition electric of Ape Calessino. And when you’re riding along Lake Como, I have to say that the two vintage models are indispensable.”

Sacha Modolo:
champion cyclist and Vespa devotee

Sacha Modolo is one of the most prominent stars of the new generation of Italian cyclists. Born 26 years ago in Conegliano Veneto (Treviso), he went professional in 2010 and immediately attracted attention in the Milan-Sanremo race, finishing fourth behind three giants: Freire, Boonen and Petacchi. Since then, he has clocked up 24 wins and taken part in the Copenhagen World Championships and the London Olympics. A sprinter with long-distance skills, when Sacha gets off his bike he turns to another two-wheel passion: the Vespa. As a member of the Conegliano Vespa Club, at every opportunity he fills up the tank and sets off to take part in the rallies organised for the world’s most popular scooter.

Ciao Sacha, to give our readers an idea of the life of a professional cyclist, can you tell us how many kilometres you cover and how many races you take part in over a season?

“During a season I ride between 30 and 40,000 km. Depending on the season calendar, the number of races varies between 90 and 100. Usually, a professional cyclist competes in 70-80 races a year.”

Which victory means the most to you and which “classic” event would you like to win?

“The classic I’d like to win is certainly the Milan-Sanremo, a race I did well in in my first year as a professional, which holds special memories for me. I suppose the win that means the most is the first one, in China in 2011. That success broke the ice and from then to the end of the season I scored a dozen wins, which led to my qualification this year with the Italian team at the World Championship in Copenhagen.”

Let’s leave the Merida for the more comfortable saddle of the Vespa. What was your first Vespa?

“My first one was a light blue VNB 2T from 1959, which I bought in 2009, when I was still cycling in the Under 23 category.”

Do you have any funny stories about the Vespa?

“No funny stories in particular. But for me the Vespa is a genuine passion, and whenever I can I love collecting and restoring vintage models, which I collect jealously. To be honest, I don’t really trust mechanics, I prefer to work on the scooters myself. I like to feel they’re my creations.”

In your career, you’ve pedalled halfway round the world. Is there anywhere you thought: “I’d like to come back here with my Vespa”?

“Well, there is somewhere, but I haven’t been there yet. Next year, I shall be racing in California, a place that’s always fascinated me as long as I can remember. I can see myself on my Vespa riding down the Pacific coast, through the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco, feeling as though I were on a Hollywood movie set.”

Imagine that once your cycling career is over, you begin work at the Piaggio R&D division to create a new Vespa: you have to choose the engine, displacement, colour and accessories. What would you do?

“That’s an idea, I might think about it. Seriously, if I were to create a new Vespa, I’d like it to be more powerful, although that would be against the law. I’d choose a classic 2-stroke 125cc engine, and I’d like to go back to the origins, when the Vespa had gears. A classic model with 4 gears. As far as the colour is concerned, I like bright colours: apple green, light blue, orange, pale yellow. A colour from the past, something vintage. I wouldn’t add too many accessories, the standard set are all you need.”

Thank you Sacha: you’ve got a long career ahead of you as a cyclist (and as a Vespista!): so all the best for next season!

Preview of the 2014 life-style collection
for the new Vespa Primavera

Presented at a world preview at the 2013 EICMA International Motor Show in Milan, the 2014 life-style collection for the new Vespa Primavera is already a blockbuster success. As a present for friends or a treat for yourself, to stand out in a crowd dressed in original stylish garments, whose high quality pays attention to every detail. For him, cheerful brushed cotton t-shirts, with prints on front and back (in fashionable green, red and blue); or with the Vespa Primavera silhouette wrapped round the side (white and blue slub cotton); also, a yellow slub cotton t-shirt with a green “retroprint”. On top, the bomber jacket in “dress blue” with the Vespa logo, in 100% poplin, with matching lining and “camouflage” details.
Plenty of colour for her too: a floral print logo for the white t-shirt; as well as a bright pink t-shirt with graphic prints front and back with added sequins. For casual chic, a white cotton t-shirt with front pocket in a Vespa “camouflage” print, which can be matched with the soft cotton and viscose scarf with the Vespa logo, in a blue “camou” print.

THE WHEEL-SHAPED TARGET BAG

A fantastic idea, the highly original and roomy spare-wheel shaped “target bag” is made from waterproof materials. It can be fixed behind the Vespa Primavera leg shield with a magnet and won’t slip as you’re riding. When you get off the scooter, the bag can be quickly detached and carried around by its handles. The only problem is choosing from the wide range of bright colours, or the black bag with a contrasting Vespa logo. A special gift that won’t go unnoticed.

The Vespa collections are available online at the Vespa Store, the special web store dedicated to planet Vespa: clothes, accessories, and gadgets for a day inspired by the style of the world’s most popular scooter.

IT’S XMAS TIME!

The most exclusive Christmas decorations take their inspiration from the elegant Vespa 946: white balls decorated with a red logo and silhouette (in packs of six, with a signed two-colour box), to hang up together with the shiny metal “shapes” (a pack of four stainless steel shapes in a signed box). Hang them on the tree or in favourite corners of your home and office. A great gift idea for every Vespa lover.

Adventure

Vespa raid Maroc
into the Sahara

A race on a Vespa in the Sahara desert. Inspired by the “Panafrica” rally, Ferràn Silva, a Spaniard from Burgos, launched the idea in 2012: an adventure trip through the dunes in six stages, competing with the best Vespa riders. The first edition was a great success, and was won by David Muñoz and José Horjales (in real life, officers with the Semprona Guardia Civil in Villarcayo); with their previous experience on the Panafrica rally in 2011, on a Vespa 200cc, they were the race favourites.

PHOTO GALLERY 2012

The organisers (Silva, owner of Desert Adventure in Burgos, who works with Jordi Mercader of Desert Buggies) decided to try their hand again: the 2013 race was held from 26 October to 3 November, leaving from Almeria, in southern Spain, landing in Melilla on the east Moroccan coast, and following a route through the stunning Saharan landscapes to Erfoud (or Arfoud as it’s known in the Maghreb), the location for countless films including Marrakech Express, The Mummy, The Prince of Persia.
The race is no stroll: it includes overnight stages, ascents, fast stretches, stony tracks, huge swings in temperature, and sand that manages to get into everything.

PHOTO GALLERY 2013

Preparations have already begun for the third edition – from 25 October to 1 November 2014 – again on the Vespa, and in the desert. But the route changes every year, giving the competitors the opportunity to discover another “piece” of North Africa: modern adventurers on their iron chargers (specially equipped indestructible vintage Vespa scooters, ready for anything).
The new route is still a secret, it will be published on: www.vesparaidmaroc.com.
Registrations open on 15 December 2013: (vesparaidmaroc@gmail.com).

Vespa 946 is the rally star

Fabio Sbrana at the Pisa Lucca Abetone stage

The Vespa 946, the most luxurious model in the Vespa’s 67-year history, the star of events all over the world, is also centre stage at Vespa rallies. In its homeland, Italy, where it was seen at the international rally in Salsomaggiore (20-21 July), and abroad, at the event in Mons, Belgium, on 16 November. On both occasions, the guest of honour was Vespista Giuseppe Cau, a celebrated rider born in 1928 and now an “ambassador” for the Vespa, in great demand among the Clubs.

PHOTO GALLERY

Paolo Daniele, chairman of Vespa Club Ath Belgium, tells us: “The legendary Giuseppe Cau was a guest at our splendid event. He did me the great honour of signing my Vespa 946, the first model signed by Cau abroad. Our gift to him was to appoint him honorary chairman of the Vespa Club Ath Belgium.” Deputy chairman Michel Goesens sent WIDE the photos of Cau signing Daniele’s Vespa 946. Cau also signed a 946 in Salsomaggiore and is always pleased to do so at the invitation of his fellow Vespa devotees.

Fabio Sbrana: “Me and my 946”
Not only is Fabio Sbrana from Pisa one of the fortunate few to own a Vespa 946, he has been a Vespista for more than 40 years and, like his wife, who shares his passion, a great traveller. Fabio tells us: “I liked the 946 as soon as I saw it and I went straight down to the Motorteam dealer in Pisa to buy one. My wife and I have shown it off at the rallies we’ve attended, in and outside Italy. The photo I’m sending you is the start of the sixth edition of the Pisa, Lucca, Abetone Night Rally (6-7 July), organised by the Pisa Vespa Club. I’d only bought my splendid white 946 two days earlier, and my wife and I immediately decided to take part in the rally, where we were certainly the centre of attention.”

GIUSEPPE CAU: A BOOK ABOUT “THE MYTH, THE RIDER, THE LEGEND”

Giuseppe Cau (Rome, 1928) is a legendary Vespa rider who, during the 1950s, won everything there was to win, bringing fame and honour to Italian sport and the Piaggio name. It was a partnership between man and machine that became a perfect union, an ideal combination, the strongest and most prolific of alliances. Like a perfectly executed chord, a sweet but tenacious melody, played with the lightness of touch of a virtuoso. And what music those engines made, bright and lively like the fanfares of the bersaglieri (an Italian military crop, noted.).

PHOTO GALLERY

It’s a marvellous story. Enrico Piaggio’s favourite rider, the jewel designed by D’Ascanio and the engine that gave the Italians wings. They virtually grew up together, in symbiosis, victory after victory, medal after medal, his hands wrapped firmly and fondly around the handlebar of the widely admired and spirited «two-wheeled lady from Valdera».
Dozens of years spent racing with Piaggio, developing prototypes, testing the engineers’ solutions, riding the scooter of Italy’s economic miracle the length and breadth of the “Boot”. This book tells the story of the partnership between a rider and his “Two-Wheeler”: an indissoluble union that began back in 1946, when Giuseppe Cau was still only a teenager venturing out into the world.
A story that has lasted a lifetime, that will fascinate the devotees of the “Legend”, a trip down memory lane through the recollections of a man who, after almost seventy years, still feels the same thrill he experienced the very first time he sat on her saddle.
(From the back cover of the book “Giuseppe Cau – Il Mito, Il Pilota, La Leggenda”, by Giuseppe Cau, Fabrizio Valeri and Vincenzo Scarlino; photos kindly provided by the publisher CLD Libri of Pontedera, Italy, www.cldlibri.it).

Snippet: Giuseppe Cau donated his book to the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano and even Pope Francis. Both thanked with official letters (sent by the Director of Secretary Office of the Presidency of the Republic and by the Secretary of State of the Vatican), that the Cau Vespa enthusiast, as well as Knight of Labor, proudly preserves.

From Britain to Paraguay
events and rallies for the Vespa

Around the world on the Vespa: a photogallery of fellow Vespa enthusiasts, from Britain (where the national Vespa Club of Britain – VCB – founded in 1952 is one of the oldest and most active clubs) to Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay (the success of the recent Tropeira Brasil Paraguay expedition), and their forthcoming events. A round of applause for Britain’s Vespaholics Vespa Club (a branch of VCB), which donated 900 pounds to the Forces Children’s Trust (the next charity event is 27 April 2014). On its Facebook page, the club has posted an old photo of Georges Monneret and his 1952 exploit: it shows his arrival in Dover after crossing the Channel on his Vespa, mounted on a sort of mini-catamaran.
Meanwhile, preparations have begun for “Vespa World Days”: the top international rally, to be held in Mantua from 12-14 June 2014. Registrations have already sold out: www.vespaworlddays.com.

Exhibition
An exhibition at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera (Pisa) dedicated to the Indian subcontinent. Opened by the Indian Ambassador, Basant K. Gupta, the show will stay open until 15 February 2014

“PASSAGGIO IN INDIA – A GATEWAY TO PIAGGIO”

There was a warm response from the public for the opening event of the exhibition “Passage to India – A Gateway to Piaggio” at the Piaggio Museum on Friday 6 December, attended by authorities and institutions. The guest of honour was the Indian Ambassador to Italy, Mr. Basant K. Gupta, who cut the ribbon to declare the exhibition open, at the side of Piaggio Foundation President Riccardo Costagliola. Ambassador Gupta arrived in the afternoon to visit the Museum and its collections of historic vehicles.

PHOTO GALLERY

The event began with a thrilling dance display by the “Bollymasala Dance Company”, directed by Indian dancer and choreographer Ambili Abraham. The performance of the seven dancers, male and female, dressed in brightly coloured traditional costumes, was in perfect Bollywood style.
After the addresses by Mr. Costagliola, the authorities, including the ambassador, who praised the project, photographer Fabrizio Sbrana and architect Enrico Agonigi, who curated the exhibition organised by the Piaggio Foundation (and sponsored by the Tuscany Regional Authority, the Pisa Provincial Authority and the Municipality of Pontedera), the public moved into the exhibition rooms to admire the displays and soak up the colours, sounds and flavours of the great Asian nation.

The exhibition is the Piaggio Foundation’s tribute to a country that, since the 1950s, has welcomed and spearheaded the success of the Vespa and the Ape. Initially through a sales office and later through a gradually expanded manufacturing operation, Piaggio vehicles have been at India’s side throughout its industrialisation and economic growth. With the splendid photographs of Fabrizio Sbrana, many enlarged on a huge scale to astonishing effect, and the settings designed by architect Enrico Agonigi, the exhibition reproduces scenes from daily life in India’s streets and squares. As the exhibition progresses, the country’s ancient culture, its costumes, customs and, above all, its people, form the main focus of attention, together with elements of architecture, decor and art. The faithful reconstruction of an Indian cinema adds a spectacular note, a glimpse into the fascinating and colourful world of Indian popular culture as represented by the Bollywood movie industry.
The exhibition offers a rich program of side events: at the opening evening, in addition to the dance display, visitors had the opportunity to sample Indian delicacies from a tempting buffet. Other highlights will include an evening of readings and recitals by actor and writer Giuseppe Cederna, and the projection of the film “Lessons in Forgetting”, winner of the “Fondazione Piaggio” award at the “River to River – Indian Florence Film Festival” in Florence, which ended on 28 November. The closing day of the exhibition, 15 February, will present another display of traditional Indian music and dance, directed by Lucrezia Maniscotti (Duniatrio).

THE BEST VIDEO OF THIS ISSUE

BELGIO: “LA PIAGGIO DU CONDROZ”

This issue of WIDE presents a new regular feature – “The best video of this issue” – reproducing the best clip from the web or sent in to us that “talks about us”: about the Piaggio Group and its products.
Our first “best video” is “La Piaggio du Condroz”: a hilarious musical video of the Belgian band “Tonperlipopete”: 2 guitars, 2 sax, 1 double bass, 1 cajon (a percussion instrument) and, if required, a flute. The band dedicates a light-hearted hit song to Piaggio accompanied by a video – starring the evergreen Ape three-wheeler – in their characteristic style, a humorous blend of jazz, swing and a pinch of soft folk. For those who might be interested, Condroz is a wooded area in southern Belgium’s Walloon region. Nature is a recurring theme for this group: their first disc was called “Que la campagne est belle” (What the country is beauty”).
