“VESPA SULL’ONDA” (“VESPA ON THE WAVE”):
SUCCESS FOR THE RIDE ACROSS THE STRAITS OF MESSINA
A vintage Vespa scooter, converted into an amphibious two-wheeler, has successfully crossed the 3.3 km of the Straits of Messina. The event took place on the morning of Sunday 30 July 2017: accompanied into the sea by a “court” of motorboats and dinghies packed with tourists and supporters, the Vespa left from Torre Faro, on the northern coast of Sicily, and rode across to the beach of Cannitello in Calabria.
The rider of the “amphibious” Vespa was Franceso Foti, a professor of mechanics and machines at the Fermi nautical institute in Bagnara and vice president of the Vespa Club of Villa San Giovanni, which organised the event, under the aegis of Vespa Club d’Italia. The scooter, a low-lamp model from 1953, was mounted on a steel and aluminium stand, and used a kinematic chain to transmit power to a propeller; the float consisted of two twin-seater kayaks.
Details come from the directive issued by the Vespa Club of Villa San Giovanni: “The project to cross the Straits of Messina on a Vespa is the brainchild of a Vespa fan from Villa San Giovanni, Francesco Foti, vice president of the local Vespa Club and an expert connoisseur of the legendary two-wheeler. The first person he involved in the extraordinary project was his friend Francesco Pratticò, president of the local Vespa Club and a genuine Vesparado, an invaluable teammate. The project was developed at the Villa San Giovanni branch of the Enrico Fermi Nautical Institute of Bagnara Calabra, where Francesco Foti teaches Mechanics and Machines. It had the enthusiastic support of the principal, Graziella Ramondino, the professional advice of Mario Malavenda, director of the machine tools workshop, and the technical assistance of Antonino Greco, who handled the frame and assembly. Last but not least, the committed involvement of the group of students who took an active part in the realisation of the project.”
The project of the team of Vespa fans, teachers and students from Calabria will go down in the more than 70-year history of the Vespa, and evokes the 1952 adventure of Frenchman Georges Monneret who crossed the English Channel – approximately 40 km from Calais to Dover – in just 5 hours with his amphibious low-lamp Vespa.

APE PROTO EVOLUTION SHOW AT THE “ITALIA A ZANDVOORT” EVENT
“Italia a Zandvoort” – automotive and lifestyle event – is the most important Italian motoring event in the Netherlands. As in previous years, the 2017 edition (the weekend of 24-25 June) was a great success. Over the two days, the Zandvoort racetrack was devoted to everything to do with Italian automotives, and more besides. A party for the whole family, in perfect Italian style. Vehicle displays on the racetrack alternated with entertainment in the paddocks. There were exhibits of the best automobiles from the most famous Italian brands, performances on the racetrack, as well as attractions centring on Italian fashion and food.
A special guest this year was the Ape Proto Evolution team from Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, whose displays on the racetrack with a feisty Ape three-wheeler fitted out in racing style won loud applause: with their stunning turns, jumps and burn-outs, the rider and stuntman galvanised attention, especially among the young spectators. Davide Stefani, a pluri-champion in Ape proto competitions, tells us about the weekend:“Our performance on the Zandvoort circuit was really exciting; me as the rider and my cousins Filippo Trebbi, stunt man, and Vanni Valentini, mechanic. It all began because the organisers of ITALIA a ZANDVOORT were in touch with an Italian cameraman who had shot videos at a number of events in Italy; they were very taken with our show and greatly admire the Piaggio brand and Italy, so our group – Ape Proto Evolution – caught their attention. We got straight down to work to organise our participation in the Dutch event, with the support of our friend Luca Motta.
We left from our base in Ca’ Romano (in the village of Pennabilli, near Rimini) and set off for Zandvoort, in northern Holland, at 2:45 on Thursday 22 June, all ready to face the 1,500 km trip. We arrived on the Friday evening at 19:30 and our first stop was at the racetrack to introduce ourselves and get our passes for the event. On Saturday morning, super-excited, we were back at the circuit ready to do our two shows for the day. The public and the organisers were very pleased, and that wasn’t the end of it: on the Sunday we were back for three more displays, one in the morning and two in the afternoon. During the second show, the organisers organised a rally as a tribute to Piaggio, with a parade of new and vintage Vespa scooters ridden by Dutch Vesparados doing a lap of the circuit. A wonderful sight, which attracted great interest. At the end of the day, happy with our performance, we loaded up our Ape Proto Piaggio and set off the next morning at 3:45 to return to Italy.”
