MOTO GUZZI ELDORADO
THE MYTH IS BACK

The fleet of large Moto Guzzis expands with the new Eldorado, the modern and luxurious heir to the unforgettable "850" that made its fortune in the States more than 40 years ago. Eldorado 1400, with a strong and unique tradition, is the latest and best example of the heritage range available from the Moto Guzzi brand which now expands with a great new vintage classic. Eldorado is a luxurious motorcycle on the cutting-edge of technology which, powered by the largest V Twin ever manufactured in Europe, is a perfect interpretation of the most genuine Guzzi spirit. The new Eldorado is a true flagship in the bike world, embodying a splendid tradition in an increasingly solid present. And it does so looking decidedly to the future: chromium inserts and finely crafted details combine with LED lights and come together in classic lines that bring Moto Guzzi into a new dimension where refinement speaks Italian.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Forty-eight years of history This is the calling card of the by now legendary Moto Guzzi 90° V Twin designed by engineer Giulio Cesare Carcano. From its first appearance on the V7, this legendary powerplant has been modified into countless versions and on a vast range of motorcycles. It was in the third evolution of the 90° V Twin that Moto Guzzi breathed life into the Eldorado. The year was 1972. Less than two years earlier, on the wave of a surprising supply of 750cc V7 bikes to the LAPD (the Los Angeles Police Department), the first Guzzi California was born and, on the same base, the luxurious Ambassador. In the constant displacement increase, Carcano's twin cylinder had already been taken from 700 to 757 cc and, with a third increase in size, the 850 cc version was born.

Moto Guzzi California 850, United States, 1972

With this engine the Eldorado was made as a replacement for the Ambassador with an even more complete, refined and luxurious model, but also one that would be able to provide a powerful and satisfying ride.
The goal was clearly achieved: “if Roman gods had ridden motorcycles, the Moto Guzzi Eldorado would have been chosen by Bacchus.” In the late '60s this was how the American Cycle World magazine concluded their test of the luxurious Italian bike, the latest evolution of the 90° V-twin with cardan final drive just introduced in the States. The metaphor effectively highlighted the intoxication experienced on a modern, powerful, luxurious and fast bike, painstakingly studied down to the smallest details and extremely satisfying to ride.

Moto Guzzi Eldorado 2015

More than forty years later this extraordinary experience is repeated in the shape and substance of the new Eldorado. By looking at the Eldorado 1400 one can see clearly how this Moto Guzzi has preserved the personality of its ancestor, drawing it from the past to the future along the path of technological evolution and stylistic continuity.
It's a bike that, even when it is parked, evokes the travelling spirit, the hundreds of kilometres travelled with that perfect feeling between rider and mount, as the fundamental component of the Moto Guzzi soul. A bike with a powerful identity with a fiercely proud Italian heritage which comes onto the scene as a global traveller, at home in any latitude, able to bring to mind spaces which, from coast to coast, cross over faraway continents.

This is how designer Miguel Galluzzi, who is in charge of the Piaggio Group PADC (Piaggio Advanced Design Center) at Pasadena, introduces it: “At 94 years of glorious Moto Guzzi history, a new wind of passion has pushed us to explore new horizons for this prestigious brand, not to mention the most important milestones. Great respect for tradition combined with a search for the best possible technology and the purest Italian design leads us today in the creation of the best Moto Guzzi bikes ever built. Searching for new horizons should be understood not only in terms of technique, but also as new riding experiences. All of this is blended in the soul of the new Moto Guzzi Eldorado: a bike designed to evoke riding excitement, the joy of ownership and admiration down to the smallest details like no other bike can do.”

The flashback effect comes out in the details: the spoked wheels, the oversized saddle, the rear mudguard with the gem-shaped taillight and the bullhorn handlebar. Even the fuel tank is full of appeal: the two-tone paint is accentuated by a teardrop motif characterised by a mirror-finish chrome treatment. A twin white coachline (Eldorado is available in Nero Classico and Rosso Pregiato) protected by another layer of clearcoat adds an even more prestigious touch to the tank and emphasises its lines. The front and rear mudguards and side panels are also highlighted by a dual white coachline under another protective layer of clearcoat, which ends in a point evocative of the tip of apaintbrush. The Moto Guzzi Eldorado logo takes its stylistic inspiration from the unforgettable Eldorado 850 badge. Also, the passenger saddle is mounted on a chromed luggage rack with built-in grab-handle: when needed, the passenger saddle can be easily removed to make plenty of room for luggage.

Eldorado's spoked wheels, both sixteen inches, mount classic whitewall tyres (130/90 on the front and 180/65 on the rear), which draw attention to the new wraparound mudguards. The wheel rims themselves are in unpainted polished aluminium, with an inner rim width of 3.5" (front) and 5.5" (rear): true works of art that manage to combine the most classic style with the modern technology of tubeless tyres. The front end has a particularly “clean” design which enhances the powerful front end, whereas the rear, on the other hand, is the most distinctive stylistic element on this ultra elegant Moto Guzzi. Its smooth and decisive shape integrates with the new full cover shock absorbers, the gem-shaped rear light cluster and the classic rounded turn indicators.

The Eldorado is easily distinguishable by its original complex surface headlight with polyelliptical light equipped with LED daylight running light (DRL). Speaking of digital technologies, the instrumentation is particularly satisfying, contained in a 150 mm diameter circular panel with the analogue rev counter scale finding its place along the external circumference and a multifunction full-matrix suspended display at the centre, all packaged neatly, like a luxury watch, in a bright chromium housing. You don't climb onto the Eldorado - you settle comfortably into the saddle. Situated at just 740 mm from the ground, the new seat, generous floorboards and comfortable chromium plated cowhorn tapered handlebars simply cry out for you to sit down, press the start button and let the tarmac roll past under your wheels.

If the road ahead is an endless Interstate Highway you can activate cruise control by pressing the button on the right-hand electric block and sail along as you listen to the throbbing 90° V-twin filtered by the big block's elastic-kinematic mounting system, knowing that if you need or desire it, the cardan final drive will be ready to unleash up to 120 Nm onto the tarmac at 2,750 rpm. Technically unchanged, the twin cylinder confirms its monumental architecture enhanced by the valve covers painted black with Moto Guzzi laser printed on them and the tight and smoothed cooling fins crafted with a facing technique, the same popular and precious method used to make the passenger footrest brackets.
The engine is an absolute benchmark in its category for engine capacity-performance-consumption ratio thanks to excellent thermodynamic performance combined with advanced Ride-by-wire multimap electronic management. This technology allows the rider to choose one of three engine management maps: Turismo, Veloce and Pioggia. And that's not all: the dynamic performance of the vehicle is also kept under control by its latest generation traction control (MGCT) which can be adjusted on three actuation levels in order to increase active safety without impacting performance and riding pleasure. The Eldorado's chassis was developed with the goal of increasing precision and ease of riding: the stiffness of the frame, the choice of tyres, the trail and the suspension calibration are all perfectly harmonised to increase the Eldorado's ride to levels which are unheard of on bikes with similar characteristics.

NEW MOTO GUZZI AUDACE
THE MUSCLE BIKE

The new Moto Guzzi Audace states its rebel spirit immediately simply with its name. It is a muscle bike designed to enhance the spectacular performance of the 1400cc "Made in Mandello" big block, the largest V Twin ever manufactured in Europe. Nothing more than pure riding pleasure led the development of a model where the best available technology is at the service of performance and which has a look with a strong personality, a carbon look which takes on that dark soul already introduced on the Moto Guzzi V7 II Stone and reconfirmed with the elements of the Dark Rider personalisation designed for the “750” from Mandello.

Moto Guzzi Audace and Ewan McGregor

THE “DARK” BIKE THAT SCRAPES THE ASPHALT

Today Audace is the brazen interpreter of the Moto Guzzi rebel spirit, a brand with a unique personality that often goes against the flow. The history of the Larian eagle is riddled with unique choices: the transversal V 90, a skill for innovation, records in the sports field, the renowned 8 cylinder engine. Moto Guzzi has never been shy about showing its unique character. 90 years on it is still the same. Ostentatious, muscular and fierce, the Moto Guzzi Audace can be picked out immediately by its front end, made stylistically lighter by the circular headlight unit and the carbon mudguard mounted on a fork without any telescope covering. Audace has no chromium plating: every mechanical detail, each small exposed metallic part is dark as night, an ideal condition for fully enjoying a bike in solitude with the striking beauty of this new Moto Guzzi 1400cc. Audace is the perfect representation of the second soul of the Moto Guzzi brand - urban dark. A dark soul already introduced on the Moto Guzzi V7 II Stone and reconfirmed with the elements of the Dark Rider personalisation that Guzzi designed for the “750” from Mandello.

Miguel Galluzzi, the designer in charge of the PADC (Piaggio Group Advanced Design Center) in Pasadena California, introduces the new Audace like this: “The first steps of the new Moto Guzzi path were taken from the 90 year anniversary celebration for this great brand, founded in 1921 and unique in the world for the motorcycling values that it embodies. Moto Guzzi's desire to grow is perfectly summed up in the strong and uncompromising character of the new Audace. I believe that this bike, today, speaks louder than any words about the more modern soul and future of the brand from Mandello. All you have to do is look at it and ride it and all your questions are answered. Sitting astride this imposing bike, starting the powerful V twin and riding down the road is all you need to understand what Moto Guzzi represents today. The new Audace is a perfect interpretation of the most genuine Moto Guzzi spirit.

On the lines of the Audace light comes through only in the stark contrast with the colour of the lateral strip that shows several brand new details. Like the undersump lug that gives the side view a gritty look, the metallic radiator grille and the short, megaphone exhaust with die-cast aluminium support flange that, despite the outlaw look, is high-tech to contain polluting emissions. In fact, thanks to the use of a secondary air system and a specific catalytic converter, the Audace is the first Euro 4 approved Moto Guzzi. The side panel covers are light, as well as the passenger footpeg bracket. The platform footboards are gone here - we are no longer on a cruiser - as is the rocker gear shift control in order to make room for sportier footpegs mounted farther back and the classic gear shifter pedal.

Particular attention was given to the more sporty saddle, covered in eco-leather with exposed red stitching, lowered in terms of the seating position and installation ready for the foldaway passenger seat (that can be removed when necessary). The design of the drag handlebar, thanks to the forward position of the footpegs and the different seating level, creates a longer and more dominating riding position. Another particularly elegant feature is the burnished valve covers, the fully adjustable rear shock absorbers with separate gas bottle, the alloy wheels personalised with the Moto Guzzi logo and the decidedly minimal mirrors. Powerful and aggressive, the Audace looks as if it is crouched down on its haunches like a large feline ready to unleash its explosive power to scratch the asphalt, leaving the mark of its oversize 200/60 rear tyre.

The generosity of the 1400 cc "Made in Mandello" 90° V-twin is a quality which is well known by now and on the Audace, thanks to the exhaust system with redesigned fluid dynamics, is even more lively at high revs, up to a torque of 121 Nm at 3,000 rpm. As a result, thanks in part to an advantageous weight/power ratio, the Audace jumps off the line with unexpected vigour. The Audace will certainly be the Moto Guzzi most used with the “Veloce” engine map and the one where the MGTC traction control system will need to intervene most often. Whereas its large twin cylinder engine is the absolute benchmark in its category for engine capacity-performance-consumption ratio thanks to excellent thermodynamic performance, the advanced Ride-by-wire multimap electronic management allows the rider to choose from one of three engine maps: Turismo, Veloce and Pioggia. The new Moto Guzzi Audace is available in two different colour schemes: Nero (Black) Travolgente and Rosso (Red) Impetuoso.

Aprilia Tuono V4 2015 – Official Video

Tuono V4 1100 is the latest and most spectacular evolution of a sport naked dynasty, born in 2002 out of Aprilia's intuition to strip down and fit a handlebar on their flagship superbike (which at the time was the V-twin RSV mille), thereby combining all the advantages of a chassis par excellence with the fun of sitting up and dynamic riding. The patriarch of the new “supernaked” category was called the Tuono 1000 R, the first ultra high performance naked. Aprilia Tuono has therefore always been a high handlebar superbike, unbeatable on the track and loads of fun on the road. It was out of this tradition that a completely new Tuono was born in 2011, a direct emanation from the unbeatable Aprilia RSV4 introduced in 2009 and World SBK dominator. It was an epic change: Tuono V4 R immediately made a place for itself as the highest performance, most technological and sophisticated naked sport bike ever manufactured, the most adrenaline pumping, fierce and effective naked ever seen, an excellence for the most purist of thrill seeking enthusiasts thanks to the V4 engine capable of 167 HP and the exceptional APRC electronic controls package, still unrivalled in terms of effectiveness and technology. But the evolution did not stop here. In 2013 an even more refined and powerful version was introduced: Tuono V4 R ABS which offered the new features which had already been successfully introduced on the second generation RSV4, such as the higher performance engine (170 HP), the revamped and recalibrated APRC system and a Race ABS system capable of withstanding even the extreme stress of the track. The know-how acquired in years of victorious competition at top levels and the experience of the Tuono history now allow Aprilia to exceed limits which had previously seemed insurmountable: introducing the new Tuono V4 1100, an exclusive thrill generator and fun in its purest state.

2015 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR Test‬‬‬

New 175 HP engine with a powerful maximum torque of 121 Nm, revamped chassis setup to achieve better agility, fine tuned APRC, new look, the possibility of connecting your smartphone to the vehicle through the V4-MP platform and two distinctly outfitted versions (Factory and RR) that have the same, strictly Aprilia character in common.

TWO VERSIONS, THE SAME SPIRIT

Tuono V4 becomes a family of motorbikes made up of two distinctly outfitted models. Tuono V4 1100 RR represents an exceptional thrill machine and it is the true heir to the previous Aprilia V4 naked, acclaimed by critics as the most effective and fastest bike in its segment. In addition to this model there is now a version with exclusive standard equipment: Tuono V4 1100 Factory, dedicated to an extremely demanding public, this bike is equipped with components which are largely derived directly from the new Aprilia RSV4 RF superbike.

The new Aprilia naked range, heir to a family of motorbikes which has been voted over time as one of the most fun, adrenaline pumping and efficient bikes ever, thus achieves absolute performance levels and sophistication, but now these bikes are also more comfortable, safe and fun to ride on the road. In addition to receiving many of the important upgrades which were just introduced on the new RSV4, Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR and Tuono V4 1100 Factory also add a new look thanks to the more protective top fairing and the better aerodynamic penetration coefficient. The relative headlight unit changes as well, a whole 1.5 kg lighter, fitted with a LED technology position light and a more modern shape which better integrates with the overall design of the bike without betraying the typical language of the Aprilia V4 characterised by three headlights.

Tuono V4 1100 Factory stands out for its new rail fairing, derived from the RSV4's, a true benchmark in sport motorbike design. The saddle is now more comfortable, even compared to its fairing-clad sister, thanks to the new foam creation procedure. You can still naturally ride two-up by mounting the dedicated saddle portion. Thanks to the 15 mm lower seating position and the new style handlebar, the on board ergonomics of both Tuono V4 1100 versions change, becoming more comfortable and increasing the feeling of complete control for the rider.

WORLD CHAMPION CHASSIS
Simply incomparable, now more than ever. There is no other naked bike as sporty and effective as the Tuono V4 1100; its close derivation from the seven-time world SBK champion comes through clearly in its double rail frame made from pressed and cast brushed aluminium elements, a structure that boasts balanced torsional rigidity and flexibility values that are incomparable; set in this exceptional frame is the new 65° V4 engine in all of its purity and uniqueness, just like the precious stone in a ring. In order to make the Tuono V4 1100 more agile on the road, without losing its legendary fierceness on the track, the headstock angle was changed from 25.1° to 24.7° and the fork advancement went from 30 mm to 35 mm for a trail that went from 107.4 mm to 99.7 mm. These sleeker chassis dimensions combine with the 4 mm longer aluminium swingarm, the various suspension setups and the consequent adjustment of the electronic controls, including the wheelie control feature, to obtain a rock solid chassis at high speeds but more agile in direction changes.

Tuono V4 1100 RR is equipped with a high quality suspension: the 43 mm upside down Sachs fork has separate "one by one" hydraulic compression and rebound adjustments besides having the settings of the spring preload on both stanchions. The Sachs damper with built-in piggy back allows hydraulic adjustments in compression and rebound not to mention spring preload adjustments. The new standard calibration on both units is functional to the increased performance of the V4 engine and the revamped chassis dimensions and it also takes into consideration use of the bike on the road without any prejudice to the possibility of personalisation in order to obtain maximum accuracy and precision in true racing style riding. The more refined Factory version of the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 comes with par excellence standard equipment unique in its category, borrowed from the king of superbike, the Aprilia RSV4 RF. The suspension section is made up of a trio of Öhlins elements (fork, rear shock absorber and steering damper) characterised by ultra fine tuning possibilities and a base setup that has been calibrated to give the rider maximum performance feedback in sport riding. The braking system on the new Tuono V4 1100 range has a pair of refined Brembo monobloc M432 callipers on the front which mounts pads with the best possible friction coefficient that grip lightweight aluminium flanged discs (for Tuono V4 1100 Factory). The wheel rims are the same for both models: their lightweight quality contributes to a maximum reduction of the gyroscopic effect, all to the advantage of great handling. Tuono V4 1100 Factory is shod with the more sporty Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa, with a wider 200/55 on the rear, in any case approved for street use and available for the Tuono V4 RR as well.

THE TOP OF THE LINE IN ELECTRONIC CONTROLS
The Tuono V4 1100 range has received all the upgrades to the already exceptional APRC system that was first seen on the RSV4 RR and RSV4 RF. As everyone knows, APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) is the patented control systems package derived directly from the winning technology in the world Superbike championship, the most complete and refined of any on the market, which provides tyre circumference self-calibration features and wheelie control. The third generation of APRC, standard equipment on the new Tuono V4 1100 units, fully integrates with the fine full Ride-by-Wire multimap electronic management of the revamped V4 engine. As always, the Tuono V4 benefits from specifically developed calibration, but it has been evolved even further in order to provide maximum thrills on the road and maximum performance on the track.
The Tuono V4 1100 RR and Tuono V4 1100 Factory APRC includes:
  • ATC: Aprilia Traction Control, adjustable on the fly (without having to release the throttle) to 8 settings thanks to a practical joystick on the left side of the semi-handlebar, now has even more fine tuned and higher performance operating logic. The allowed percentage of skidding also differs depending on the speed in a turn: The behaviour of the system is even more uniform and guarantees a high level of support in turns at high speed without penalising traction coming out of slow turns;
  • AWC: Aprilia Wheelie Control, with 3 selectable settings, has been recalibrated to be even more sporty in map 1, whilst still guaranteeing a slight lift in quick acceleration and subsequent smoother descent of the front wheel to the tarmac;
  • ALC: Aprilia Launch Control, for use on the track only, with 3 settings;
  • AQS: Aprilia Quick Shift, a system for extremely fast gear changes without shutting the throttle and using the clutch.

In addition to the third generation APRC, the Tuono V4 1100 range is fitted with the highly advanced Race ABS system, developed in collaboration with Bosch to guarantee maximum safety on the road, without sacrificing any performance on the track. The 9MP system, weighing a mere 2 kg, adopts an intervention strategy called RLM (Rear wheel Lift-up Mitigation) that limits rear wheel lift (stoppies) when braking sharply; In addition it can be disengaged and easily adjusted on 3 settings by accessing the instrument cluster control menu.
  • Level 1: it is dedicated to the track but is still always type approved for road use. It acts on both wheels and guarantees maximum possible performance even when braking sharply at any speed. This setting takes nothing away from the pleasure and performance of “pushing the envelope”. With this strategy the RLM is deactivated.
  • Livello 2: : it is dedicated to sporty riding on roads, it acts on both wheels and is combined with the tip over system RLM whose intervention is progressive based on vehicle speed.
  • Livello 3: dedicated to riding on surfaces with poor grip, it acts on both wheels and is combined with the advanced RLM (rear wheel lift mitigation) system.
Each of these three Race ABS maps can be combined with any of the three engine maps (Track, Sport, Race), in order to allow riders with different experience and skill levels to find the best possible combination for their style.

HIGHER PERFORMANCE FROM THE V4
The primary goal of the changes made to the already extraordinary Aprilia Tuono V4 engine was to increase torque, especially at medium-low revs in order to increase effectiveness and riding pleasure on the road. To achieve this goal the engine capacity was increased to a full 1077 cc thanks to the new cylinder bore which was taken from 78 to 81 mm. This increase in displacement also resulted in higher top performance: the power peak went from 170 to 175 HP and places the Tuono V4 1100 range at the top of its segment (almost 20 HP more than before are already available at 8,000 rpm). This makes the new sport naked from Noale excel as a complete weapon for thrills and effectiveness with superlative torque values that dominate on the road and uncompromising top performance to dominate on the track.

The Tuono V4 1100 is the only naked powered by a 65° V4 engine with unique characteristics. The narrow V architecture has made it possible to make an engine that is extremely compact lengthways which helps to centralise weights and to have a compact chassis. As in previous models, the monobloc crankcase with integrated aluminium cylinder liners ensures maximum rigidity and consistent performance. The upper half of the engine case is now made with a new shell fusion and has been lightened and reinforced; it also now has an optimised ventilation system in order to reduce power loss due to air pressure inside the engine crankcase. Also, the crankshaft now has connecting rod pins reduced to 36 mm in diameter with a weight increase of 0.45 Kg, the pistons are new and the Pankl connecting rods are lighter by a total of 400 grams.
The other technical particulars which made this engine so popular have remained unchanged, such as the removable gearbox and the innovative timing system kinematics: the chain only moves the intake camshaft that returns motion to the exhaust camshaft by means of a single gear. This solution allows for extremely compact heads especially in the area beneath the frame spars, much narrower than would otherwise be possible. A countershaft dampens vibrations even more than in a 90° V engine.
Full Ride by Wire technology eliminates any direct connection between the throttle grip and the throttle valves, which are entirely controlled by a latest generation Marelli control unit that also controls the ignition and the four injectors. Each bank is fuelled by two throttle bodies managed by a dedicated servo unit. The new and powerful engine ECU now provides easier management of the three maps, each one of which corresponds to a different engine power output and now also to a dedicated engine brake management map. The two classic engine management logics Track and Sport are now joined by the new Race map, the most extreme and suited for professional use of the bike on the track with engine braking control reduced to a minimum in order to support more abrupt braking. All three maps are easier to manage and less aggressive than the previous version, allowing a better relationship between the opening of the throttle and the torque sent to the wheels. This is a solution that provides further advantages, such as reducing rear tyre wear and better management of the significant power that the new Aprilia V4 is capable of developing.

VERSIONS AND COLOURS
The new Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 range includes two models distinguished by different technical equipment and different colour schemes: Tuono V4 1100 RR is available in two attractive colour schemes, Portimao grey and Donington blue, whereas the Tuono V4 1100 Factory Superpole graphic has that decidedly non-conformist spirit so typical of the Aprilia stylistic tradition that demands bright and very distinctive colours.

THE MOTO GUZZI MEDIA PLATFORM
CONNECTS ELDORADO AND AUDACE TO THE WORLD

The innovative multimedia platform makes its début on the new Moto Guzzi Eldorado and Audace at the service of Moto Guzzi riders. MG-MP, available as optional equipment, is the innovative multimedia system which allows you to connect the bike to your smartphone and consequently to the web. With this application, downloadable free from App Store and Google Play, your smartphone (iPhone or Android) becomes an actual sophisticated on board multifunctional computer and the link between the vehicle and the Internet. The wireless connection allows you to simultaneously see important information about the vehicle on your smartphone screen so you will always have your trip parameters under control.

The touch screen on your smartphone lets you view five parameters at a time, selected by the rider from a vast menu including speedometer and tachometer, engine power and torque, instant and average fuel consumption, average speed and battery voltage, longitudinal acceleration and extended trip computer. The “Eco Ride” helps to limit fuel consumption and to maintain an eco-compatible riding style, providing a summary assessment of the results achieved during the trip. You can also store your trip data and review it later on your computer or directly on the app so you can analyse your route along with the vehicle performance parameters. When the fuel reserve light comes on MG-MP indicates the location of the closest petrol stations; the system also helps you easily find the vehicle when you are parked in an unfamiliar area, automatically saving the position where it was last switched off. MG-MP includes the “Grip Warning” feature which replicates the traction control indications for maximum visibility and provides information on your riding style in real time with relation to the road surface.

A dedicated warning light alerts the rider in the event of poor grip. With the synergistic use of gyroscopes and vehicle signals, your iPhone/iPod becomes a sophisticated roll angle indicator on turns thanks to a proprietary algorithms developed specifically for the new Moto Guzzi. You can set the thresholds for roll angle, running speed and rpms so that when they are exceeded the relative warning lights will come on or flash on the virtual dashboard.

TELEMETRY ARRIVES WITH V4-MP

In the rich accessories catalogue dedicated to the Aprilia V4 1100 you can now find a highly advanced version of the Multimedia Platform which transforms your smartphone into a semi-professional tool with exceptional information capacity. Everyone knows that the Multimedia Platform is the innovative multimedia platform offered exclusively by the Piaggio Group which allows you to connect your vehicle to your smartphone and consequently to the web. With this exceptional application your smartphone becomes an actual sophisticated on board multifunctional computer and the link between the vehicle and the Internet. This is a window to the future, which lays the foundation for a new way of looking at communication on two wheels. Thanks to further development of this fascinating system that Aprilia has fine tuned, communication between vehicle and smartphone becomes active: from his or her mobile phone the rider can change the settings on the Tuono V4, plus get tips in real time on how to improve track performance in complete safety.

Some of the more prominent features of V4-MP are:
  • Active electronic setup: this is as close as you can get to the “corner-by-corner” electronic management used in racing. Using the GPS feature of your smartphone, the system recognises the position of the bike at any given time on the track and automatically changes the electronic adjustments (traction control and anti-wheelie) based on rider selected settings, corner by corner. This allows you to increase safety and effectiveness on the track, adjusting the control parameters at every point on the circuit and without distractions.
  • Adaptive race assistant: this feature provides tips in real time to safely achieve your best lap on the track with your Tuono V4. The application compares in real time the rider’s best lap with his/her current performance and assists by immediately indicating the need to brake or the possibility of opening up the throttle, to gradually achieve better lap times.
  • Advanced telemetry dashboard: this is a “virtual” dashboard that lets you use your smartphone's display to see, not only all the information on the standard instrument cluster, but also numerous other parameters acquired by the bike's telemetry such as, for example: instant power distributed to the driveshaft; instant torque distributed to the driveshaft; percentage of power available; rear wheel thrust; rear wheel slippage; longitudinal and lateral acceleration (G-G diagram); lean angle.

“BIG BROTHER”:
MOTORCYCLE ELECTRONICS

THE ELECTRONIC CONTENT OF TODAY’S MOTORBIKES, WITH THEIR CONTROL UNITS AND SENSORS, CONTINUES TO INCREASE. BUT HOW MUCH DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT BIKE ELECTRONICS? THIS FEATURE OFFERS A FEW POINTERS FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THIS “NEW WORLD”

Aprilia Performance Ride Control Explained, In Action

Ride by wire, inertial platform, gyroscopes, accelerometers, sensors, control units. These are familiar terms in motorcycle lingo. Nor are they limited to super sports models, these days naked, maxi enduro and mid-range bikes too are commonly equipped with “advanced electronics”. And the trend will continue, since electronics not only offer unprecedented levels of riding safety, they also make it possible to cut consumption and emissions. Yet what exactly is an inertial platform and what is its function on a motorcycle? Let’s take a step-by-step approach to find out a little bit more.

RIDE BY WIRE: AN APRILIA FIRST
APRC - Aprilia Performance Ride Control - official video

Also known as an “electronic accelerator”, this was the first step towards advanced electronic control. As the first manufacturer to install an electronic accelerator on a mass-produced motorcycle (the Shiver 750, in 2006!), Aprilia led the way in this technology. Previously, the linkage between accelerator and butterfly valves was direct, via a cable (and still is on many motorbikes and scooters today): each movement of the accelerator was matched by a movement of the valve. This solution is not always ideal: at times, for example at low revs, if you go at full throttle you risk flooding the engine, preventing it from delivering top performance, while fuel consumption and emissions increase. Since the arrival of electronic injection, engineers have tried to remedy the problem, first with dual-valve systems (one with a mechanical linkage, the second controlled electronically), and subsequently moving to ride by wire systems offering fully electronic valve management.

The advent of ride by wire opened up a new world: the fuel-air mix in the combustion chamber is precisely controlled by an electronic unit, which optimises engine efficiency by constantly ensuring exactly the right quantity of fuel and air for the rider’s needs. So engine efficiency is guaranteed at all times, saving on fuel and reducing emissions.
Electronic accelerator management improves torque delivery, so jerking is avoided as the throttle is opened and closed, for smoother acceleration. Since there is no direct cable connection between the accelerator and the valves, throttle control becomes the smoothest of pleasures. This solution also supports a variety of maps, for different levels of engine performance; for example an engine map suitable for city riding, another for a more sporty style, both easy to select via the electronic controls on the handlebar.

Flanking the ride by wire system is the traction control system, which limits torque output if it detects slippage of the drive wheel; the most sophisticated bikes, such as the Aprilia RSV4 and the Tuono V4, also feature an inertial platform, for output management in relation to roll. On the latest machines, ride by wire is also useful in assisting the downshifter and limiting engine braking.

SENSORS: THE MORE THE BETTER. The “heart” of any advanced electronic system is the inertial platform and the control unit. Its “eyes”, on the other hand, are the sensors, now installed all over the motorbike. The “nerves” are the cables that convey the signals detected by the sensors to the control unit. The sensors monitor everything that happens on the bike: the wheel rotation speed (for the ABS and traction control systems), the air and cooling liquid temperatures, the suspension sag (for electronic suspension). All the data is sent to the control unit, which processes it in a few thousandths of a second and decides the adjustments needed – ignition and fuel injection settings, valve opening (independently of the rider’s throttle input) – to optimise performance. Clearly, the more sensors on the motorbike, the greater the amount of information available to the control unit for the operation of the vehicle and precise activation of its controls.

IMU, THE INERTIAL PLATFORM. The inertial measurement unit is the final element, the last piece needed by the control unit to know absolutely everything about the motorcycle. In very simple terms, the inertial platform is the bike’s most advanced sensor: it measures its position in space, and its acceleration/deceleration. To do so, it uses one or more gyroscopes (a gyroscope is a spinning wheel or disc whose axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation) and the same number of accelerometers. What does measuring the bike’s position in space mean? Quite simply, measuring, moment by moment, the angle of inclination (roll but also pitch) and the level of acceleration and braking. The information is sent to the control unit, which assesses it together with the input from the sensors, and formulates an engine output “strategy”. Knowing the bike’s position is fundamentally important for more sophisticated controls than in the past: for example, traction control and ABS, which can then also operate in relation to the roll angle, and ultimately active suspensions. In practice, the engine will reduce torque and power if the bike leans sharply, and increase them as the roll angle decreases. The most complex inertial platforms have a larger number of gyroscopes and accelerometers (usually one for each orthogonal axis in space) to measure left-right inclination (roll angle), front-rear pitch and, in the very latest models, yaw.

ALL-OUT TESTING: ENGINE TEST STAND, TRACK, ROAD. Designing and developing a motorcycle with advanced electronics is a very lengthy process. The greater the amount of information, the greater the complexity involved to ensure that everything is perfectly coordinated. Much of the work is performed on the computer, with simulations, and on the engine test stand, but nothing can replace actual road testing. For this reason, the job of the tester takes even longer and has become more complex, yet it is essential to reproduce the perfect riding feeling and ensure that the bike’s reactions are as “natural” as possible. Thousands of miles are eaten up on the road and the track in order to establish the “perfect” map from among the hundreds of possibilities. The fact is, there is no perfect map: motorcycle electronics continue to advance, fine-tuning is constant, and upgrades similar to those of a computer or smartphone are not uncommon (indeed, they are frequent) during a model’s lifetime.

BRIEF “ELECTRONIC” GLOSSARY”.IMU – Inertial Measurement Unit – the inertial platform for continuous measurement of acceleration and inclination. ROLL: right-left movement perpendicular to the bike’s axis. PITCH: movement along the axis of the bike (forward-back), which for example can cause wheeling. YAW: a lateral movement of the rear wheel with respect to the front wheel. Sliding, in other words. ABS CORNERING: the ABS system operates as the motorbike leans, preventing the wheel from blocking when the rider leans and applies the brakes. It operates together with the inertial platform. SENSORS: the “eyes” of the electronic system, to measure the temperature, speed, movement, pressure of the various mechanical elements. CONTROL UNIT: the motorcycle “brain”, which receives all the input from the sensors and the inertial platform (if present) and processes them to regulate the engine and electronic control settings. MAPS: also known as “riding modes” or “ride modes”, they comprise a range of settings for engine output and the electronic controls.

THE NEW MOTO GUZZI BIKES
ELDORADO AND AUDACE: THE “RED” TEST

THIS DETAILED ARTICLE FROM RED LIVE.IT IS BY JOURNALIST STEFANO CORDARA, EDITOR OF “RED RIDE DRIVE LIVE” (AN EDITORIAL PROJECT FOR BIKES&CARS FANATICS, AVAILABLE ON THE WEB AND TABLETS). THE ROAD TESTS WERE HELD AT MANDELLO DEL LARIO
THE RANGE BASED ON THE PLATFORM WITH THE 1400 CC TWIN-CYLINDER “BIG BLOCK” HAS BEEN EXTENDED. Via Parodi 57, Mandello del Lario. You breathe motorcycling history when you walk round here. This unique factory is the legendary birthplace of many amazing motorcycles. And it is still turning out new Moto Guzzi bikes today. The top management of the Piaggio Group intends to safeguard its heritage through significant investments – the Mandello production site will become the futuristic headquarters of Moto Guzzi, and the plans are already on the table according to Colaninno – and, above all, through products worthy of the Moto Guzzi legacy. The eagle brand’s countless fans around the world probably can’t wait: they’d like to see a whole host of bikes come out straightaway, to take Moto Guzzi back to the status its history and name deserve. Hastiness, however, has already proved to be a pitfall in the past. Today Moto Guzzi knows it has to establish a place among aspirational brands, in that “premium” world everyone talks about but not everyone can reach. It is doing so by expanding its motorcycle offer and creating services and a community, the Moto Guzzi Clan, the first official club. And by encouraging customisation with special clothing ranges and the Guzzi Garage, a catalogue that already offers no less than 450 original accessories, and continues to grow.

INTERVIEW WITH MIGUEL GALLUZZI BY RAPTORAMA

2015 Moto Guzzi Eldorado review and Galuzzi interview

2015 Moto Guzzi Audace 1400 full review
LIVE. Leaving aside the V7, the brand’s bestseller, continually updated and now at an impressive level of maturity, the California is the bike indicating the direction Moto Guzzi intends to take. A combination of tradition and innovation, enhanced with top-class chassis solutions and cutting-edge electronics, three maps (Tourism, Fast and Rain), adjustable Traction Control and smartphone interface support with the Moto Guzzi Multimedia Platform (MG-MP) app. The California is the modern interpretation of the European cruiser. The Eldorado and the Audace are two additions to the family based on the great air-cooled 1400 twin-cylinder (Europe’s largest air-cooled twin-cylinder) designed to satisfy the multiple aspirations of the huge cruiser community. As the people at Guzzi point out, these bikes are not two versions of the California, but two models developed from the California platform with their own distinctive personalities and styles.

The Eldorado draws on our collective imagination and the history of the Moto Guzzi company to project us into the star-spangled land of the free: wide open spaces, untamed nature, roads vanishing over the horizon, a relentless sun and miles to ride accompanied by the music of your choice. Inspired by the GT 850 from 1971, the model that marked the start of the Moto Guzzi “American dream” – and also became the motorbike of choice of the US police – the Eldorado looks to the past, mirrored in countless details: broad footboards, rocker gear shifter, spoked wheels, fuel tank with chrome inserts, comfortably ample saddle, rear mudguard with gem-shaped taillight, bullhorn handlebar and robust passenger grip. The white-wall tyres with new wraparound mudguards conceal an important new chassis feature: in the front, the 18-inch wheelrim is replaced with a 16-inch wheel, for a lower set-up. The front-wheel trail has been reduced slightly, from 145 to 144 mm, with the same steering axis angle (32° rake) and wheelbase (1,695 mm), and the saddle is placed at just 724 mm from the ground. Measurements that, according to the people at Moto Guzzi, make the Eldorado a motorbike to make yourself at home on, not just to sit on. They’re right, because thanks to the handlebar projected towards the rider, as well as the regulation of the suspension, the Eldorado promises the comfort of a true flagship. The configuration of the 1,370 cc 90° V-twin engine is the same as the California and delivers 96 hp at 6,500 revs and 120 Nm at 2,750 revs.

A different declension, a different approach: if the Eldorado is a chrome-rich, laid-back power cruiser, the Audace ventures down a very different path. Away with the chrome trim, black is the preference here for a very dark bike (although a smart matt red version is also available), using luxury materials (a carbon fibre front mudguard) and weighing in at less than 300 kg (kerb weight 299 kg), pretty impressive for this class of bike. In keeping with its sporty personality, the Audace features a “naked” front fork; the front headlamp is a simple round light, the belly pan adds a gutsy touch to a technical element like the radiator, while the exhaust pipe is shorter, makes a more decisive sound and slightly improves performance from the engine, which for this configuration delivers 121 Nm at 3,000 revs, all within the limits of the Euro 4 standard, the first Piaggio Group engine to do so. This means these engines still have a very long life for some applications.
The design of the side panels and the passenger footpegs is lighter. The bike has a dedicated suspension system and does away with the rider footboards for sportier, forward-placed higher pegs (this is the model with the greatest ground clearance in the range) and traditional commands. The lowered Alcantara saddle features red stitching, and can be completed with a perch for a passenger. The original drag bar handlebar makes for an extended riding position. The 16-inch rear tyre measures 200/65 rather than 200/60 to increase ground clearance.
THE RIDE. AUDACE: EXCEEDING ALL EXPECTATIONS. The test ride is on roads winding round the banks of Lake Como and up the legendary ascents of the so-called “Larian triangle”, the area between the two lower branches of the lake. Demonstrating once again that you don’t need to go to the ends of the earth for great motorcycling roads. Especially when you’re riding bikes like these two Moto Guzzi models, which just love to swing round the endless series of lakeside bends. I began with the Audace: the riding position provided by the drag bar is typical of power cruisers, the footpegs are set forward, but not too far, and avoid the classic “wrapover” position frequently found on this type of bike. In short, it’s not the most comfortable position, but it’s not bad. Every time I ride a Guzzi 1400, I wonder how the engineers made a bike of such formidable dimensions so easy to ride. When you look at the Audace with its 170 cm wheelbase, you think it could just about manage the motorway exit ramp. Nevertheless, bend by bend (ever since the days of the California, to be honest), you realise this bike rides, responds and brakes beyond all expectations. It’s a cruiser, of course, not a MotoGp racer, but in its category it certainly offers the most active ride I know.

What’s more, compared with its 1400 sisters, the Audace provides significantly greater ground clearance, allowing leans of some importance before the footpegs start to graze the road. The Audace’s “black soul” is apparent during the ride and in the engine, which, in this “muscular” riding position, also proves its worth with Fast, the map with the greatest throttle response. All black and bad – but the red version looks good too – the Audace is the perfect show bike for parading down the coast. At the same time, when it comes to hard riding, it doesn’t hold back: the braking can handle the situation and the chassis is anything but a “rocker”; indeed, it’s on the rigid side, with shock absorbers that won’t save your back from a few bumps on potholed surfaces.

THE RIDE. ELDORADO: TRUE PLEASURE ON TWO WHEELS.The Eldorado is a completely different story: you feel at home as soon as you’re in the saddle, the broad chrome handlebar comes to meet you, just where you want it, the set-up is very low, the engine is quieter. The Eldorado is one of those bikes that addict you to the pleasure of a “leisurely pace”, to be enjoyed with the barest trickle of gas, listening to the “pum pum” of the twin-cylinder every time you open the throttle and relishing the piston strokes, the only “blows” to reach the rider. Only “good vibrations” for this Guzzi; the bad vibrations are filtered by the engine assembly system, whose elastic joints buffer the twin-cylinder from the chassis, to maintain the rigidity of the frame. If the Audace is always pestering you, the Eldorado offers relaxation: savour its performance with the Tourism map, which offers a smoother response to the throttle than the Fast map. The lower set-up and 16-inch wheels make this two-wheeler the most ridable of the Guzzi 1400 models, the one best able to conceal its weight as it corners. The engine delivers top-notch performance, on a par with the California, and is anything but sleepy: proving the rule that Guzzi cruisers have always been and still are the top performers and easiest to ride in the world. True pleasure.

APRILIA V4 DAYS:
RSV4 AND TUONO, POWERFUL RULERS OF THE ROAD

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS LAUNCH AT THE MISANO WORLD CIRCUIT FOR THE NEW APRILIA RSV4 RF AND RR AND THE TUONO V4 1100 RR AND FACTORY. STAR TESTIMONIALS RIDERS LEON HASLAM AND JORDI TORRES

Mid-April, at the Misano World Circuit near Rimini, in the setting of the Adriatic coast. The event is “Aprilia V4 Days”, the international press launch marking the debut of the new motorcycles from Aprilia, the supernaked Tuono and the gem in the crown, the RSV4. To find out more about the two stunners, more than 120 journalists from 24 countries travelled in from across Europe, India and America, from the UK to Korea, ready for a test ride on the new bikes, pure concentrates of Aprilia technology and design.

PRESS CONFERENCE. The launch kicked off the evening before the test ride, with the press conference in a hotel in Rimini, where presentations by our marketing colleagues and engineering team illustrated all the new details on the two motorcycles, whose presence dominated the stage: the reporters took notes, but it was clear they were impatient to step astride the Aprilia purebreds. An hour of numbers, charts, photos, videos and, to close, a welcome surprise. The arrival of the Aprilia Superbike riders and star testimonials, Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres, to answer the reporters’ questions!

Everyone’s attention switched immediately to the two riders, and excitement mounted in a flurry of flash photography, autographs and selfies with the two champions. The first question was for Leon Haslam, the British rider who has been competing in the Superbike championship for a number of years: “Leon, you know this bike, the RSV4, better than anyone else: what can you tell us about it?” “I couldn't pass up the chance to come to Misano to introduce the new street version of my RSV4 and I really had to struggle to resist getting on and taking it for a ride! The level these bikes have reached is extraordinary. A customer with the Aprilia RSV4 can take advantage of a chassis, electronic controls and top-shelf performance that are very close to an authentic Superbike: like my racing bike, truly formidable, the best I’ve ever ridden and fully qualified to enable us to compete at a level to conquer our 55th world championship title!”. Then it was Jordi Torres’ turn: “Jordi, you’re making your WSBK debut. How are you feeling?” “Yes, this is my first Superbike season, and it’s a personal challenge first of all. This is a pretty tough category, with hugely powerful bikes, and I’m going all out to deliver the best result!”. The day after, he said: “Today I had fun being a ‘teacher’ for the journalists, explaining the features of the Misano track and watching the street version of the RSV4 RF in action. I was surprised by the unmistakeable sound of the V4. I’m also amazed by the hypernaked version of the Tuono 1100: the problem now is that I want a Tuono for myself to ride on the street!”.

TRACK TRIALS. The next morning, after a quick breakfast, everyone met up at 9 a.m. at the Misano racetrack. Two test groups were organised: one for the RSV4, the other for the Tuono. In their bike leathers, boots, gloves, earplugs and crash helmets, the reporters in the first group looked like post-modern super heroes. In the pitlane, the Aprilia technicians checked that the bikes were tuned and ready. Off with the thermal tyre covers and on to the saddle of the RSV4 to begin the four test sessions for each… horse. The trials commence. There is a mood of pre-race expectation and adrenalin: you might think a world championship race was underway rather than a press launch!

The engines rev up, the roar of the bikes fills the air. The track marshals give the go-ahead to begin… and they’re off! Twenty RSV4 shoot off together, thundering down the track. It takes only a few laps to start feeling comfortable with the bike and realise that the only limits depend on the riders’ ability and mettle. As the miles increase, the brand new asphalt on the Misano circuit is eaten up ever faster beneath the Pirelli racing tyres. The engines roar louder, on the straight the RSV4s flash by. Power combined with electronics and the most advanced technology available.

ON BOARD

ISMAEL BONILLA - APRILIA RSV4RF

Each motorcycle has also been fitted with a smartphone linked with the bike’s control unit: the Aprilia V4-MP multimedia platform provides the journalists with a personal telemetrics system, as if they were real Superbike racers, with lap times, maximum tilt angle, fuel consumption, speed. Both of the world championship riders had positive things to say about Aprilia’s great new technology, the V4-MP multimedia platform, which transforms the customer’s smartphone into an exceptionally capable information tool.

“Because of my age, I was virtually born with the smartphone,” said Jordi Torres, “but Aprilia has developed something quite different to any other app in the motorcycle world. This application is very similar to the professional instruments that we riders use." For Leon too, the V4-MP was a pleasant surprise: "You open it and you are immediately transported to the Misano garages, but that’s normal in this day and age," said the British rider. "The difference here is that the smartphone communicates with the bike's control unit and, bend by bend, on any circuit, you can set the traction control and anti-wheeling sensitivity, and then analyse your performance at the end of the session and try to improve to find the best lap."

ROAD TESTS. Meanwhile, on the other side of the circuit, the second group of reporters is getting ready to road test the Aprilia Tuono. Like kids with a new toy, they can hardly wait. At first, they look at the bike from a distance, assessing how to break it in, as if they were cowboys about to mount a purebred mustang. On with the engine, shift into first gear… then the fun begins.

ON ROAD

Aprilia Tuono 1100 Misano
The Tuono becomes an extension of the rider: it discharges its power smoothly to the road and seems to glide through the surrounding hills. We leave Misano and head for Monte San Clemente, Morciano di Romagna, Saludecio, Mondaino, Montegridolfo. A stop-off is mandatory in Tavullia, Valentino Rossi’s hometown, aflutter with yellow flags bearing the number 46, where we also see his ranch and training track. After the ritual photos, we ride on to San Giovanni, Cattolica, then back to the track. Seventy or so kilometres among gentle hills under a clear sky, on our thundering “blue streaks”.

Everyone meets up for lunch: the press pack share their impressions and opinions, and tell their colleagues from the other group about the bike they will be testing after lunch. The comments are colourful – “you just wait, the RSV4 is like a razor blade on bends!” – and sincere “the Tuono is a complete bike to have fun, and its performance and comfort are unique!”. Enthusiasm is sky-high, the journalists can’t wait to begin the second test, convinced their expectations won’t be disappointed, and ready to be two-wheel superstars for a few hours. The press launch was followed by an extraordinary level of international media coverage (press, TV, web) with scores of features devoted to the new Aprilia bikes.

THE NEW APRILIA RSV4 RF:
TEST RIDE ON THE MISANO CIRCUIT

THE TEST RIDE BY RED LIVE.IT JOURNALIST STEFANO CORDARA AT THE MISANO WORLD CIRCUIT. “AN ENHANCED CUTTING-EDGE V4 ENGINE, IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CHASSIS AND ELECTRONICS. SIXTEEN EXTRA HORSEPOWER FOR A MOTORBIKE WHOSE DYNAMIC BALANCE, TRANSLATED INTO PURE RIDING STYLE, PUTS IT IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN”

Evolution? A bumpy road, especially for a company already in a leading position like Aprilia. The risk of change is that you’ll get it wrong. This is why the Aprilia engineers have devoted such painstaking attention to fine-tuning their most successful racing bikes, the RSV4 and the Tuono V4. Beginning with the Superbike Replica, the adjustments to the engine have been so numerous and so extensive that the V4 has changed profoundly: new sumps, lighter crankshaft and connecting rods, forged camshafts for a saving of 360 g per row, titanium valves, CNC-machined intakes and combustion chambers and a cassette gearbox with new gears and ratios. Also new are the airbox, directly derived from the Superbikes, the exhaust, and the variable-length intake ducts. These developments were necessary to take account of the new SBK regulations, making the factory bikes more similar to those ridden by the official riders Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres.

APRLIA RSV4 RF ON BOARD
The result? An additional 16 hp of power compared with the previous bike: the new RSV4 RF is the first standard Aprilia to break the 200 hp ceiling. To be precise, it comes in at 201 hp, with 115 Nm of torque at 10,500 revs. The Racing ABS is unchanged, with three maps, and further improvements have been made to the already excellent aPRC electronics: 8 traction control levels, including anti-wheeling control, launch control and quick shifter. The letters T and S stand for the “Track” and “Sport” maps, as before, while “R” now refers to the Race map. The new RSV4 RF sees the debut of the V4-MP, the top-end version of the Aprilia Multimedia Platform, the smartphone app delivering additional information and enabling adjustment of the bike settings. With the V4-MP, once your smartphone is connected to the bike, you can divide the track into sections and choose the most appropriate traction control and anti-wheeling level for each one, to optimise performance.

The chassis is untouched, apart from a few adjustments to improve the balance: thanks to the variable-height settings, a prerogative of this model, the engine has been set 5 mm lower, the fork extended by 14 mm and the rear wheel set back 4 mm. So the bike is slightly lower and “longer”, to enhance stability without losing the proverbial agility of this V4, maintained by the offset of the triple clamps (+ 2 mm) and by closing the steering head with eccentrics, a standard feature on the RSV4.

Fine-tuning, in other words, to improve the improvable. What about the suspensions? Classic would be the right description: Sachs for the RR, Ohlins for the RF numbered limited edition, which also has forged wheels and is the top-end model of the RSV4 range. And the active suspensions? Stopwatches to hand, Aprilia engineers swear they offer no time benefits, so they are not envisaged.

At the test ride in Misano Adriatico, round the “Marco Simoncelli” circuit, the RSV4 pulls out decisively, much more than in the past. You’re not aware that you’re riding 201 hp, at least until you power into a bend, and realise the speed you’ve reached.

Of course, this Aprilia is so well balanced everything seems easy, even when you step up the pace and break your own best time … The Noale team have managed to improve a motorbike that was already excellent. For example, by boosting power with those 16 extra hp, without compromising stability. The electronics have been successfully upgraded; the ergonomics improved thanks to slightly higher semi bars. The key strength of the new RSV4 RF can be summed up in the word “balance”, easy to say, but difficult to achieve, especially when you’re dealing with more than 200 hp.

ROAD TEST:
APRILIA TUONO V4 1100

“LARGER DISPLACEMENT, MORE POWER, MORE TORQUE. PLUS IMPROVED COMFORT, THANKS TO A SERIES OF SMALL DETAILS. THE NEW APRILIA TUONO V4 1100 OFFERS GREATER VERSATILITY, WITHOUT FORGETTING ITS ORIGINS.” RED LIVE.IT JOURNALIST STEFANO CORDARA TAKES THE BIKE OUT ON THE ROAD

There seems to be no end to the increase in engine size on naked and sports bikes. Was it necessary? No, of course not, but as the folks at Aprilia say: “We wanted to deliver a bit more torque, but on the way we also found some more horsepower, so what do you want to do? Forget about it?” Not likely! Which is why the Noale 2015 streetfighter also presents so many engine upgrades, beginning with a displacement increase to 1,077cc, thanks to new pistons with an 81 mm bore. The aim of the Aprilia engineers is clear: to boost performance at low and medium revs for even greater road riding pleasure. So, more torque (121 Nm at 9,000 revs), but also more power, now up to 175 hp at 11,000 revs. Once again, the heart is the V4 engine with 65° “open” cylinders, which not only provides greater displacement, but has been improved with a host of technical upgrades. A new upper engine case, a new crankshaft with smaller con rod pins and less friction. The connecting rods, from Germany’s Pankl, are each 100 g lighter.

The chassis presents no big changes, although a series of adjustments have made the bike more enjoyable on the road, without losing the formidable effectiveness on the track that makes the Tuono a pretty tough customer when you venture out between the kerbs. The barycentre has been lowered slightly, the rear wheel taken back 6 mm, so the bike is a little longer, but the headstock angle has been changed from 25.1° to 24.7° and the trail from 107.4 mm to 99.7 mm. The main difference in the chassis is the new suspension set-up, for greater comfort and smoothness. There are two Tuono models, the Tuono RR and the Tuono Factory with Ohlins suspension and specific wheelrim colour, as well as different first-fit tyres (Pirelli Supercorsa SP), special colours and aluminium flanged discs.

The ride organised by Aprilia in Italy on the roads around the Misano international circuit was an interesting experience. The chosen route was an opportunity to appreciate the full significance of the improvements the Noale engineers have applied to the Tuono. Improvements relating mainly to set-up, suspensions and comfort, whose impact is evident after just a few yards in the saddle; a completely new saddle, like the fairing.

In essence, the Tuono 1100 is still the Tuono we knew: sporty, bad, precise and now with an amazing engine. Yet it has improved in terms of what were considered its “limits”. It is no longer a racer transferred to the road (although the steering angle is still that of a pure racer), rather it is a bike still capable of racing that can now be used satisfactorily on the road. The saddle has been improved, and the suspension is smoother, so comfort is no longer an unfamiliar word for the Tuono, which now offers a pleasurable road experience, whereas before you would have complained. The Tuono 1100 also delivers a much better feeling when the road gets “tough”; it takes tight bends and potholes in its stride, keeping the promise of greater road effectiveness.

“Beneath” it all, however, you still have the Tuono, the incredible streetfighter we all know, and now with an even fiercer engine, superlatively managed by shorter gear ratios and a quickshifter (part of the aPRC platform with advanced maps) that doesn’t miss a trick. A few yards are all you need to realise this, and while there was certainly no shortage of horsepower on the Tuono 1000, the surge on the 1100 is unmistakeable. Low revs=high mileage is usually the winning equation for twin-cylinders. Today, this also applies to the Aprilia V4, which pushes like a brute even at 4,000 revs and delivers a torque curve worthy of the largest twin-cylinder. Thanks to shorter ratios (one less sprocket tooth, from 16-42 to 15-42), the V4’s output from 4 to 7,000 revs is impressive to say the least. The Tuono 1100 offers impressive averages and doesn’t forget to stretch, performing its proverbial progressions accompanied by the incredible sound of the V4, for which the adjective exciting is a poor description. So the Tuono has evolved for road riding, with a more powerful engine, but its management has improved too, thanks in part to the new maps, whose main changes as far as the new Tuono is concerned relate to engine braking, rather than output, which now continues to be full power. Because you can never have enough power.

APRILIA PASSION AT MISANO:
“V4 DAYS” ON THE NEW RSV4 AND TUONO

The invitation was irresistible: 21 and 22 April: join Aprilia at the racetrack! The great motorcycling season has begun! If an RSV4 (V4 or V2) is raring to go in your garage or, by popular demand, a Tuono (V4 or V2), then get out your crash helmet, boots and leathers and put the date in your diary: on 21 and 22 April we’re inviting you to the track. Aprilia will book three 20-minute rounds for you and your 1,000cc at the Marco Simoncelli Misano World Circuit. Attendance is free!”. The Aprilia owners also had the chance to test ride the new RSV4 RF and Tuono V4 1100 bikes! Here are some of their comments.

RSV4 RF – Riders’ opinions

The response of the Aprilia fans, many of whom are members of the #bearacer community, could not have been more enthusiastic. The two-day “V4 Days” event devoted to the passion for Aprilia attracted more than 300 participants, with 48 rounds on the track and hundreds of kilometres on the tarmac, with technical briefs and the tester team providing support. Two fantastic days at the Italian racetrack dedicated to champion Marco Simoncelli. It’s hardly surprising. This is the great thing about “being” Aprilia.
Watch this clip to share the emotions of the people who were there, riding the RSV4 and Tuono V4: their comments reveal the thrill that only a lap around the circuit on an Aprilia bike can provide.

STARRING THE NEW ELDORADO AND AUDACE

A tour across the United States, seven stages, two protagonists: the new Moto Guzzi Eldorado and Audace, plus a preview of the MGX-21 concept, an audacious and fascinating project that opens up a new approach to touring.

This is the “Moto Guzzi National Tour” with the Moto Guzzi USA truck travelling from 5-28 May, with stops in Seattle, WA, Moto International; Sacramento, CA, Elk Grove; Newport Beach, CA, Newport Italian; Austin, TX, AF1 Racing; Pensacola, FL, Adventure Motorsports; Matthews, NC, Matthews Fun Machines, and ending in Brooklyn, NY, at Moto Guzzi Brooklyn.

American fans of the Italian motorcycle brand founded in 1921 met up at the dealer stores to take a close-up look at the new Moto Guzzi bikes, try them out for size and exchange views. At each stop, new customers crowded to the dealers to investigate the new Moto Guzzi entries. Some lucky visitors even had the chance to share a pizza and an espresso coffee with designer Miguel Galluzzi, who heads the Piaggio Group’s Piaggio Advanced Design Center in Pasadena, California. Galluzzi is the name behind the bikes brought out by Moto Guzzi over the last few years, with their unmistakeable Italian Style: from the sumptuous California 1400, Custom and Touring, to the updated V7 II range, from the return of the Eldorado to the debut of the Audace. RETURN OF THE WORLD SUPER-CHAMPION:
MAX BIAGGI MEGASTAR AT MISANO

HERALDED BY GREAT MEDIA EXCITEMENT, THE RETURN TO THE TRACK OF THE “BUCCANEER” CAPTURED ATTENTION OVER THE RACE WEEKEND AT THE MARCO SIMONCELLI CIRCUIT, RECONQUERING THE INTEREST OF THE PRESS AND PUBLIC. SIX-TIME WORLD CHAMPION, APRILIA TEST RIDER AND WILD CARD, TV COMMENTATOR: MAX CONTINUES TO SURPRISE AND THRILL. READ ON FOR AN ACCOUNT OF THE “BIG COMEBACK”

PREVIEW AND PRE-RACE DECLARATIONS. Misano, 17 June 2015 - World Superbike will be in the limelight at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit in Misano Adriatico next weekend. Aprilia will be on top form at the second round on Italian soil after Imola, and looking to take the RSV4 to the podium. A formidable challenge, given the incredible level of expertise shown by the adversaries on the track, but at Misano the Italian team will have the support of a third bike and a great comeback: Max Biaggi, six-time world champion, holder of two Superbike titles with Aprilia, the only Italian ever to win the crown with factory-based bikes.

Max will be back in the saddle astride the Team Aprilia Racing RSV4 RF, one of the most successful motorcycles ever in Superbike, which he himself rode to a double championship victory (Riders and Manufacturers) in 2010 and 2012.

APRILIA TAKES ITALY TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD - ITALY MAKES HISTORY: APRILIA WITH MAX BIAGGI WINS THE 2012 WORLD SUPERBIKE

Meanwhile, development work continues on the V4 from the Veneto, partly in light of the changes in regulations, monitored by Biaggi himself, with the support of the Aprilia Test Team. Max’s return, in the dual role of tester and rider – triple if you consider his success in the last two years as a sports commentator for Mediaset – is an exciting event, not just for the fans, but also for the whole Aprilia Racing team. Aprilia Racing Manager Romano Albesiano confirms this. “At this point we can't wait to have him on the track. Of the many riders who have won with us, Max is the most successful in Aprilia history with his four titles in the 250 class and the fantastic World SBK double win. Seeing him back on ‘his' RSV4 will be very exciting, for us and for all motorcycling fans. We’re just as eager to see how the practice and then the two races go. Max now has a bike adapted to the new rules that has reconfirmed its competitiveness once again this year, which he knows well because of his invaluable work as a tester. We are going to Misano determined to do well with all our riders and to make this round a celebration for the return of a great champion.”
MAX BIAGGI: “GREAT EXCITEMENT!”. “I'm getting back on the track!” comments a beaming Max Biaggi. “It’s really exciting to return to racing, to experience the adrenalin of competition again, especially on a circuit as special to me as Misano. In my work as a test rider, I'm helping Aprilia develop the new RSV4 RF, working very well with the guys, whom I know well and who now understand me just with a glance. The wild card is the ‘icing on the cake’ so to speak, a chance where I definitely plan on giving my all. I’m also well aware of the difficulties. Our rivals are in great form and it won't be easy for me at all. The goal, first and foremost, is to have fun, I’m not going to make any forecasts, but I shall be giving it 100% to bring a smile to the face of Aprilia, the fans and all motor-racing enthusiasts. We'll draw our conclusions on Sunday after Race 2.”

ON THE TRACK: 5TH IN THE SUPERPOLE. Misano Adriatico (Italy), 20 June 2015 - At the end of a thrilling Superpole, which saw one record fall after another, Aprilia has placed all three of its RSV4 RF bikes in the first two rows of the starting grid, and looks likely to be a key player in tomorrow’s two races, which promise to be unforgettable. In the first row, with the second best time (1’34.426) is Leon Haslam. Max Biaggi, back on the race-track three years after retiring, never ceases to amaze. After dominating the free practice sessions on Friday, the six-time world champion confirmed his great class and excellent form, battling against the 2015 championship leaders and securing a brilliant second-row spot with the fifth best time (1’34.463), just 25 hundredths from the pole. Considering this was his first experience with the current Superpole format, which allows only one qualifier tyre to be used, his achievement in this long-awaited Misano wild card performance is even more exceptional. Excellent results for Jordi Torres too: in his rookie World SBK year and facing Misano for the first time on a factory-based bike, the Spanish rider dominated the Saturday morning free practice, with the best time (his first) and closed a splendid day with a place in the second row (sixth at 1’34.551). Above all, he displayed an excellent race pace, which places him among the potential protagonists of tomorrow’s races. Aprilia Racing Manager Romano Albesiano: “A really great qualifying session. All our boys were fast, riding the three Aprilia RSV4s to the top. My compliments to all three riders. Today once again Max put in an incredible performance and he seems to have a good race pace. Torres has a strong pace too, and is looking great for the races tomorrow, as is Leon, who is in good shape although we know some things still need to be improved with him. I don't want to make any predictions. We'll take stock of the situation tomorrow evening, but we are definitely expecting two great races.”

THE RACE: 6TH PLACE AND 20 POINTS IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS. Misano Adriatico, 21 June 2015 - It was supposed to be a celebration and a celebration it was. Max Biaggi, 44, a wild card three years after his retirement from racing (announced in November 2012), displayed the skills of a six-time world champion: speed, precision, impeccable riding style. Max finished both Race 1 and Race 2 in sixth place. Despite problems with tyre wear, he put in an outstanding performance in Race 2, keeping up with the top World Superbike racers and finishing just two tenths of a second behind Sykes and about five seconds behind the winner.

“Today Max did something wonderful for us at Aprilia and for all motorcycle racing fans,” commented Aprilia Racing Manager Romano Albesiano. “His domination on Friday was understandable, even if it was extraordinary. But today Max performed at the same level as the riders who are competing for the World Championship in every race, and he did it at a fantastic pace. I'm pleased with the way everyone here at Aprilia, from the first to the last, interpreted this occasion. There were no problems, the riders and mechanics did a great job and Max also had fun battling with Leon and Jordi, our factory riders. We wanted to give ourselves, and everyone, a brilliant day, which has already gone down in Superbike history.” Max Biaggi closes his Sunday at Misano with 20 points in the championship standings: for statistics lovers, in his first wild-card race he has already won the long-distance duel with Troy Bayliss, who earned a total of 15 points in the four races at Phillip Island and Buriram.

Max Biaggi: “I'm happy with this weekend. Everything went well and we didn't make any mistakes. Once again, I'd like to thank the Piaggio Group, Aprilia and the guys from Noale who helped me take full advantage of this fantastic opportunity. Race 2 went better than the first. I finished about 5 seconds behind the winner, which is really not much at all. It's a shame about the first laps, when you find yourself following from behind it's a struggle. I wasn’t able to take full advantage of the tyres straightaway, whereas from mid-race I felt fast but struggled to overtake and lost a few tenths every lap. This type of return is definitely not easy, but it was a great weekend, tackled with a different spirit than someone who races full time in the championship. Now I'm hoping for the icing on the cake: Sepang (July-August, ed.). This round was a sort of pilot test and proved truly satisfactory. Next time, we'll be able to do well.”.

UNPRECEDENTED MEDIA EVENT.

The Mediaset channels pulled out all the stops for Max Biaggi’s return to racing at Misano, setting a precedent in the history of motorcycle racing and television with 40 cameras and a 35-strong crew to make the broadcast. The rider and chief engineer Paolo Biasio were fitted with microphones to enable TV viewers to listen to the comments, advice and info for the fine-tuning of the Aprilia bike. The cameras were also present at the post-practice session technical meeting, which is usually off limits. The broadcast even sent out Max’s heartbeat, via a heart rate monitor linked to the TV crew. Nothing of the kind had ever been seen or heard before. And as the technical commentator for Mediaset, Biaggi gave viewers his impressions directly from the track during the line-up lap before the start: he was wearing a special helmet with built-in microphone to provide a live commentary from his official Aprilia RSV4 RF racing bike on the conditions of the two-wheeler, the track, his own feelings before the race. During the race, however, he was a rider like all the others, and wore a normal helmet: for safety reasons, the regulations prohibit use of audio-visual devices inside the riders’ helmets. So, from the free practice to the race, in and out of the pits, Mediaset viewers (more of 1.8 million!) enjoyed an unprecedented television event, which was all-Italian: rider, bike, track.

WSBK 2015: LEON HASLAM ON THE APRILIA RSV4
KEEPS CLOSE TO THE PODIUM

A FIERCELY FOUGHT WORLD SBK CHAMPIONSHIP: MIDWAY THROUGH THE SEASON, WITH EIGHT RACES HELD BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND JUNE, THE APRILIA RACING-RED DEVILS TEAM STANDS AT THE TOP END OF THE SCOREBOARD

(Positions and points after the 8th round on 21 June 2015).
No surprise that the gloves have come off in an attempt to snatch the crown from Aprilia, the reigning SBK world champion after winning both the Rider and the Manufacturer titles in 2014. This year’s championship is proving to be a tough challenge. But the Aprilia Racing-Red Devils team continues to be a great competitor in motorcycle racing, resolutely defending the title: Leon Haslam, a generous rider, is determined not to cede his current third place and to climb to the top; his younger teammate, Jordi Torres, at his WSBK debut, displays grit and courage, boosting his performance race by race.

Here is a quick overview of the eigth races held so far, from February to June: there are five more to come, with the season closing on 18 October in Qatar.

AUSTRALIA: AN OUTSTANDING DOUBLE FOR LEON

The race weekend in Phillip Island in February could not have been more exciting. The Australian Superbike round, the traditional preview of the motorsport season, saw Aprilia gain its fiftieth Superbike victory, with the first place in the Manufacturers standings and Leon Haslam at the top of the Riders standings. A fantastic fourth place and two well-fought races for Aprilia and SBK rookie Jordi Torres.

Aprilia WSBK2015 - Phillip Island victory

THAILAND: AN EXCELLENT SECOND PLACE FOR HASLAM

In March, two virtually identical races launched the debut of Thailand’s Buriram racetrack in the WSBK 2015 calender. The Aprilia Racing-Red Devils team secured an excellent second place thanks to a generous Leon Haslam; strong progress for Jordi Torres, who came close to the podium in both races.

SPAIN: LEON STILL ON THE PODIUM, JORDI GETS CLOSER

The Motorland de Aragon weekend in Alcaniz on 12 April ended with a podium and confirmation of the second place in the Riders and Manufacturers world standings for the Aprilia Racing-Red Devils team. After conquering the Superpole, Leon Haslam rode his RSV4 to third place in Race 2, and just missed the podium in Race 1, to close in fourth position.

NETHERLANDS: A THRILLING BATTLE

In the Dutch round on 19 April at Assen, the two Superbike races turned in identical results, with a battle that thrilled the spectators watching from the stands. It was an emotional day for the Aprilia Racing-Red Devils team, with Leon Haslam in the leader group (his determination winning him two fourth places) and Jordi Torres climbing back strongly for a double sixth place.

ITALY: FIRST PODIUM FOR JORDI TORRES

For Aprilia, the Imola weekend on 10 May closed with the season’s first podium for Jordi Torres, who came in third in Race 2, on a track that was a new experience for him. Imola was less kind to British rider Leo Haslam, who made fourth place in Race 1, and fell without consequences in Race 2, though still keeping his second place in the championship standings.

UK: POINTS FOR TOUGH HASLAM

A thrilling day in Donington on 24 May: despite pain from his accident at Imola, Leon Haslam strenuously defended a double fourth place, to win important points and retain his second position in the Rider standings. Jordi Torres made a strong comeback in both races after starting from the back, and secured two seventh positions.

PORTUGAL: APRILIA ON THE PODIUM WITH LEON HASLAM

In Portimão, on 7 June, Leon Haslam put in a brilliant performance for the Portuguese round, with a third place for his Aprilia RSV4 RF in Race 2. The podium was the just reward for the work of the Aprilia Racing-Red Devils team and for the determination of the British rider, still struggling with rib pain from his accident at Imola. The two Portuguese races did not bring the results Jordi Torres had hoped for, despite his leap in quality in the practice sessions, partly because of rain towards the end of the race. Jordi had never ridden the RSV4 on the wet and settled for finishing the race without taking any pointless risks.

ITALY: ANOTHER PODIUM FOR HASLAM

The first weekend of the summer was a challenging two days for the Aprilia Racing-Red Devils riders at the Marco Simoncelli racetrack in Misano Adriatico (Italy). After resolving a tyre wear problem that hindered him in the first race and left him in fifth place, Leon Haslam put in a great performance in Race 2, battling for third place and finishing on the podium just two seconds behind the leader. Sunday 21 June saw Jordi Torres close with a seventh place in Race 2 (after engaging with Max Biaggi), a strong result given the minimal gap behind the winners, which made up for the fall that put him out of Race 1 in the third lap.
NEXT ROUNDS: Geico US, USA (Round 9, 19 July); Malaysia (Round 10, 2 August); Spain (Round 11, 20 September); France (Round 12, 4 October); Qatar (Round 13, 18 October).

ALVARO BAUTISTA TENTH AT THE BARCELONA GP

THE BEST RESULT SO FAR IN THE SEASON FOR THE APRILIA RS-GP, WHICH CONTINUES TO IMPROVE ITS RACE PERFORMANCE
Barcelona (Spain), 14 June 2015 – A weekend of hard work for Aprilia Racing Team Gresini: the changes tested during the week at Misano (international circuit in Italy) and taken immediately to Barcelona for the Catalunya Grand Prix (on the Montmelò track) set a punishing pace for everyone. Their efforts were rewarded with a great race by Alvaro Bautista, who took his Aprilia RS-GP to a tenth-place finish, the best result so far in this first part of the season.

Alvaro, who began the race from the seventh row on the grid, got off to an excellent start, overtaking several riders and immediately locking on to the central group, which is the current race goal. He held the group pace well and in the final laps engaged in an exciting duel with Miller, which, thanks in part to a few DNFs, secured his first finish in the top ten and six championship points. It was an unlucky race for Marco Melandri: after a delayed start, problems with the gearbox on the seventh lap forced him to withdraw.

ROMANO ALBESIANO (Aprilia Racing Manager): “Alvaro's great race is a good result that has boosted morale. A lot of work still has to be done to close the gap behind the leaders, but when you think that we’re racing with a bike that’s a laboratory, we’re very satisfied with today’s showing. We are improving race performance and are often with the centre of the group. Races like this one highlight the points we need to work on to close the gap with the leaders. I feel bad for Marco who had a mechanical problem, but that's all part of the experience we’re building, given the amount of new things being tested each time.”

FAUSTO GRESINI (Team Manager): “In a race we expected to be very difficult, Bautista battled with great determination, managing to win a series of battles with other riders. True, there were some DNFs, but Alvaro managed to keep a good pace despite difficult conditions. I'm very pleased with the efforts being put into this project, so my compliments to him and the entire team. It's a good result, important for morale and to keep making progress.”

ALVARO BAUTISTA (n. 19): ): “After a good start which helped me make up a few positions, I tried not to be too aggressive in the first laps to conserve the tyres. We knew their performance would drop a lot. The track conditions were very difficult with very little grip, so I couldn't push like I did in the practice session.

In any case, a lot of riders fell today, so making it to the finish was important. We got there and we’re pleased because we’ve gained more experience with the bike and other valuable data to improve in the coming rounds. At the end of the race, I had fun battling it out with Miller. I felt I was faster than him and in the end, after overtaking one another several times, two laps from the end I managed to pull ahead a bit to finish in the top ten.”

MARCO MELANDRI (n. 33): “I had a set-up that was different than usual and I was hoping to take a step forward, but unfortunately I had bad luck with a gearbox problem between third and fourth gear, right from the first lap. Anyway, that's normal considering this is only the second GP for the seamless gearbox. In the tests tomorrow, we'll see about continuing the work we weren't able to do today. Congratulations to Bautista for finishing in the top ten. That's encouraging for everyone.”

The 2015 MotoGP World Championship – 25 riders for 14 teams – has a calendar of 18 Grand Prix races. Seven have already been held, between March and mid-June; the last race will be in Valencia, Spain, on 8 November.

A CONSTANT FLOW OF NEW TECHNICAL FEATURES

The Catalunya Grand Prix was another important event enabling Aprilia Racing Team Gresini to continue work on the Aprilia RS-GP bikes ridden by Alvaro Bautista and Marco Melandri: a number of changes have been made recently, in the transmission, the engine, the aerodynamics and the chassis. Before setting off for Spain, the team wanted to check out the many recent technical changes and try out new chassis solutions, so a day was spent testing the Aprilia RS-GP at the Misano circuit with Spanish rider Alvaro Bautista.

Aprilia Racing Manager Romano Albesiano explains: “The first third of the season has been in line with the goals we set at the beginning of the year, when we decided to return to MotoGP twelve months ahead of schedule. The project has encountered difficulties and made clear progress, which is all par for the course. Now we need to maintain the general improvement trend in terms of bike performance. At Mugello we introduced a number of changes. For us, these are goals achieved, essential technical foundations for the design of the new bike as well. Barcelona was an important test enabling us to check once again the effectiveness of all the changes and have them work together to improve performance in practice and in the race.” Team Manager Fausto Gresini adds: “Before leaving for Spain, we conducted a very important test at Misano, where Bautista had the chance to try out the Racing Division’s new chassis solutions.”
Two weeks earlier, at the Italian Grand Prix on the Mugello circuit, the seamless gearbox made its race debut on both Aprilia RS-GP bikes ridden by Alvaro Bautista and Marco Melandri. The new transmission, which also provides seamless downshifting, was successfully tested by Bautista in the sessions held in early May on the Jerez racetrack; the results encouraged the Noale Racing Division to bring forward the official debut of the solution.

MISANO: ANOTHER WIN FOR LORENZO SAVADORI
NOW THE UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER

LORENZO DOMINATED THE RACE FROM THE FIRST LAP TO THE LAST ON HIS APRILIA RSV4 RF. TEAM-MATE KEVIN CALIA BATTLED FOR THE PODIUM UP TO THE LAST BEND, CLOSING WITH AN EXCELLENT FOURTH PLACE

Misano Adriatico (Rimini, Italy), 21 June 2015 – The Aprilia RSV4 RF bikes established their authority on their home ground. The Nuova M2 Racing team riders dominated the field, with an imposing performance from the very first corner when Kevin Calia overtook all the rivals ahead of him in an excellent start. A few bends later, he was overtaken by teammate Lorenzo Savadori, whose impeccable handling of the circuit took him and his Aprilia RSV4 RF to victory, after controlling the race from the first lap to the last. With this latest triumph, Lorenzo has widened his advantage over the second rider in the standings to thirty-four points, with another fifty still up for grabs: this determined young rider – aged just 22 – has established himself as the undisputed leader of the championship. Born in nearby Cesena, he knew he had the backing of the local public, to whom he showed his appreciation with an impressive win.

LORENZO SAVADORI (no. 32): “At the podium, the guys in the team left me a t-shirt printed with a crown and the words ‘King of Romagna’… I want to say thank you to them all because my win is the reward for everyone’s work, we’re a really strong team! I’m delighted with this fantastic result for me, the team and Aprilia.

It was a pretty tough event, because the track conditions changed during the race. There were four of us at the front and I realised straightaway that the others couldn’t top my pace. I managed to keep the lead with my Aprilia RSV4 RF through to the chequered flag, and it was great. I don’t want to think about the championship, together with Aprilia I’m working on a project to make this fantastic bike even better. There’s lots of time before the next round in Jerez, so now I’m going to take a short break before getting back to strict training. My thanks to Aprilia, the Nuova M2 Racing team, my sponsors and my friends who came here to support me together with my family.”

Race after race, Kevin Calia continues to make strong progress together with his Aprilia RSV4 RF. At Misano, he took fourth place after keeping up with the leading pack, less than a second behind teammate Lorenzo Savadori. Kevin fought right up to the last bend for the podium, which he missed by just a tenth of a second, and has now risen to seventh place in the general championship standing.

KEVIN CALIA (no. 74, 21, from Imola): “It was a great race! I got off to a good start as I did in Imola, and got out ahead of everyone. Lorenzo passed me a few bends later, but I managed to keep up behind him. I rode the whole race with the leaders and tried to keep calm through to the end.

I didn’t find the right opening to overtake without too many risks, so I preferred to come away with fourth place, although I was disappointed not to be on the podium.
But better a fourth place than a contact or a fall. Thank you to everyone who follows me, the Nuova M2 Racing team, Aprilia Racing and all my friends.”

THE APRILIA RSV4 RF ALSO IMPRESSES IN THE CIV 2015 RIDDEN BY ALESSANDRO ANDREOZZI

After the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup successes in Aragon and Assen, the Nuova M2 Racing team is also fielding the brand new Aprilia RSV4 RF in the 2015 Italian Speed Championship (CIV). Rider Alessandro Andreozzi, flanked by gentleman team manager Enzo Chiapello, was on the Italian track at the Marco Simoncelli Misano World Circuit on 25 and 26 April, for the championship opening races. Meanwhile, the Aprilia rider Kevin Calia decided to concentrate on his Superstock 1000 performance, giving up the idea of competing in the CIV as well this year.

Before the Misano race, Alessandro Andreozzi said: “We worked very well during the winter tests, so I’m very confident about the double round at Misano. The Aprilia is a great bike, and this is the first time we’ll be testing ourselves against our rivals, but we have strong backing from the excellent results of our Superstock teammates. I’m really geared up for this championship, which looks set to be at the highest level! Sincere thanks to all the people who follow my progress and to the Nuova M2 Racing team.”

Progress update: Alessandro Andreozzi made a strong showing in both the first race (2nd place) and the second (4th place), taking away the leadership position at the end of the first two rounds as number one in the Italian championship standing on the Nuova M2 Racing team’s Aprilia RSV4 RF. The CIV continued with rounds in May at Vallelunga (Andreozzi ended in 4th place on his Aprilia RSV4 RF in Race 1), and in June at Mugello (3rd in Race 1, 6th in Race 2); Alessandro currently ranks third in the rider standing. The next dates are Imola 18-19 July and Mugello 10-11 October. Meanwhile, Enzo Chiapello continues to compete and collect points in the National Trophy 1000 on his factory-based Aprilia.

A week later, at Road Atlanta, Dominguez closed in eighth place on a wet track, while McDonough made a fifth and eighth place. In the season’s third fixture, at the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Dominguez and McDonough finished third and sixth in the rider championship standings.

At the end of May, Aprilia HSBK’s partnership with Dominguez ended, and the team was joined by Sheridan Morais (a 30-year-old rider from Johannesburg, South Africa), flanked by young rookie Devon, both riding the competitive Aprilia RSV4 race bikes. Maximum commitment from team and riders, in pursuit of the top positions. Nine rounds are scheduled (with 19 competitors in the Superstock 1000), with the season finale in mid-September in New Jersey.

MOTO GUZZI SHINES AT “THE HANDBUILT
MOTORCYCLE SHOW 2015”

Scheduled to coincide with the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas, the second “The Handbuilt Motorcycle Show”, presented by Moto Guzzi and hosted by Revival Cycles, was held over the 10-12 April weekend, at the Fair Market in Austin, Texas.
An entry-free event open to all lovers of handbuilt motorcycles, the result of creative customisations of a variety of models and brands from international manufacturers. The 2015 show attracted a large public of enthusiasts, experts, collectors and two-wheeler veterans, who flocked to the Texan city of Austin. A real celebration of motorcycle tradition and culture and of industry design, the event was an exciting showcase for handbuilt two-wheelers – racing bikes, vintage models, roadsters and current models – developed by internationally well-known constructors and customizers.
Moto Guzzi USA presented its new kits of original accessories for the new Moto Guzzi V7 II range: four customisation kits are available to offer riders the style best suited to their personality: "Dapper", "Dark Rider", "Scrambler" and "Legend". Moto Guzzi also previewed a number of production models for the eagerly awaited Eldorado and Audace, and the V7 Racer Verde Legnano Special Edition.

Other attractions at the Austin show included works of art on the theme of the motorcycle, by artists from all over the world, and, of course, acrobatic displays on vintage bikes, at the “The American Motordrome Wall of Death”. All this was accompanied by Texan gastronomic specialities, for a weekend of motorcycling passion.

HOLIDAY TIME 2015:
ITALY, CAPUT MUNDI

THIS IS THE YEAR OF ITALY: THE COUNTRY WITH THE LARGEST NUMBER OF UNESCO SITES IN THE WORLD. WITH EXPO AND THE JUBILEE, IT IS ONE OF THE TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR 2015. ONE WAY TO ENJOY THE COUNTRY, FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, AND VICE VERSA, OR COAST TO COAST, IS ON A MOTORBIKE. GET YOUR EQUIPMENT READY AND PLAN THE ROUTE IN ADVANCE, WITHOUT DENYING YOURSELF THE PLEASURE OF AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS

Italy the Extraordinary Commonplace
You’ve been dreaming about it all year, and now your motorbike holiday – alone, with a passenger riding pillion or with a group of friends – will soon be coming true. So this is the time for a few preparations, with safety top of the list. To enjoy your holiday to the full and avoid problems, you need to take your machine in for a thorough check-up (go to an authorised dealer, where you can ask for original spares) and check your equipment, beginning with your crash helmet, which must of course be type approved and fit for purpose. Then, choose your outfit: for the summer months, a technical fabric is preferable to leather; next, gloves, back protector, elbow and knee pads. These are the basics, the most important; after that, keep luggage to a minimum, choose carefully (for comfort and protection against sudden changes in temperature) and stay as light as possible: the bike must always be well balanced, so you should think about weight distribution before you start.
What to do if problems crop up? Riders of Piaggio Group vehicles have the support of an extensive network of official dealers and authorised mechanics (just click on your smartphone to find the nearest specialist). Knowing this makes for greater peace of mind as you prepare to leave. The bike chosen for this virtual “Italy Grand Tour” is the new Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally, perfect for any road. And its huge range of accessories – for bike and rider – offers everything you could possibly want.

ROUTES: NORTHERN ITALY, FROM WEST TO EAST
You might want to start from Piedmont, with its vineyards and historic towns, hillside roads, excellent wines and gastronomic specialities. Don’t miss the regional capital, Turin, whose attractions include the newly refurbished Egyptian Museum (second in the world only to the Cairo museum in Egypt); the Automobile Museum, the Cinema Museum (located in the Mole Antonelliana). This year, too, Turin is exhibiting the Holy Shroud.

Torino is Happy

The journey continues at a leisurely pace, on motorways and provincial roads, from Piedmont to Lombardy with its plains and lakes (where Mandello del Lario in the province of Lecco, the home of Moto Guzzi with the factory and museum, is not to be missed). While you’re in Milan, the Universal Expo is open until October, attracting millions of visitors (although you’re best advised to take public transport – train and metro – to get there). Then on to the Veneto region, where the towns of Noale and Scorzè, in the province of Padua, are home to Aprilia, one of the industry’s most successful brands with 54 world racing championship titles, whose bikes are technological gems on two wheels. You’ll want to stop in Venice (which offers parking lots for motorbikes outside the city) and switch from the saddle to a vaporetto or gondola for a look round the calli.

Meraviglie di Venezia

Then you have to decide whether to proceed north to the Trentino, with its wonderful mountain scenery and hairpin bends, or head south along the coast.

ALONG THE COAST, FROM EAST TO SOUTH
Riding along the Adriatic Coast on a motorbike is pure pleasure: the coast roads offer a never-ending succession of colours and scents. Destination: the region of Apulia, with its stunning beaches and wonderful traditional dishes. Arriving at the extremity of the Italian heel, in Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic meet, is a guaranteed thrill.

Salento - Santa Maria di Leuca

Here, you will decide whether to stop and relax for a few days, or carry on towards Calabria, where the Sila and Aspromonte areas provide an abundance of roads for bikers. Be careful, the temperatures can be quite low, even in the summer.

THE ISLANDS: SICILY AND SARDINIA
The ferry from Villa San Giovanni (in the province of Reggio Calabria) takes you over the straits to Messina and Sicily, the Mediterranean’s largest island and the last outpost of Europe, a paradise for bikers. Among the island’s historic cities and local festivals, the capital, Palermo, a mixture of history and culture, old and modern, is not to be missed.

Spot Sicilia

From Palermo, you can take a ferry to Cagliari, in Sardinia. After taking your fill of the spectacular scenery of the coast roads, change atmosphere and venture into the interior with its valleys, woods and mountains, where time seems to have stopped.

Waiting for you in the central-eastern area of Ogliastra are canyons and prairies that might make you think you were in Arizona or Mexico. Director Sergio Leone chose the area to shoot many of his westerns. Head for Olbia to take a ferry across to Civitavecchia on the mainland, in the province of Lazio.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME
The road from Civitavecchia to Rome, with its changing landscapes and refreshing gastronomic stopping places is a great itinerary for bikers. You may want to include a couple of days in the capital (where this year the Jubilee is attracting particularly large numbers of tourists), or go straight through and head for the Castelli Romani.

Omaggio a Roma

From Lazio, it’s a short ride to the green views of Umbria, and then on, of course, to Tuscany, to see Florence and explore the entire region, a biker’s paradise.

Play Your Tuscany - Pisa

In Pontedera, in the province of Pisa, the headquarters of the Piaggio Group, the Piaggio Museum houses impressive collections of historic vehicles, including the Vespa – the world’s most famous scooter – the Ape and rare Gilera models. And finally, take the road northwards along the coast in Tuscany and Liguria, across the Apennines and back to your starting point, the noble city of Turin, whose impressive “metaphysical” squares inspired Giorgio De Chirico.

HANDY TIPS
A good way to plan your itinerary is to decide how many hours on average you want to spend on the road every day, and then decide where to stop for the night (but check to see whether just a few miles farther on, there isn’t a little known but delightful spot). So, a pre-planned itinerary is helpful (to avoid tiring yourself and to make the most of everything the Belpaese has to offer the two-wheeler traveller), but be flexible and give yourself the chance to enjoy the little surprises that add spice to every trip. Beware of tourist’s bulimia, trying to see everything there is to see: it’s best to choose the most suitable routes and stopovers for a motorcycle tour, giving preference to places off the beaten track (and save your trips to Italy's art cities, which can be easily reached with other means, for a different time of year). The country has such a rich variety of attractions for all tastes (mountains, hills, beaches, history, nature, art and architecture, culture, wine and food) that there’s no chance of boredom. Enjoyment is guaranteed.

HONG KONG
APRILIA OWNERS’ DAY

Hong Kong’s community of Aprilia motorcycle owners turned out in great numbers for the “Aprilia owners’ day” event, organised by Ah Lam Motorcycles at the beginning of the year. Sunny skies and invigorating air: perfect conditions for a day in the saddle. The Aprilia owners rode eastward from Sai Kung, stopping at Luk Kent (in the north east), before heading off for the splendid Lake Egret Nature Park in Tai Po.

The trip was a leisurely outing (the entire route, 66 kilometres, took around 2 hours), not only for the Aprilia bikers, but for their friends and families too. Everyone had a great time together and the occasion was commemorated with a group photo, with people wearing the t-shirt celebrating Aprilia’s triumphs at the WSBK 2014 championship, which took the Italian brand’s trophy case to 54 world titles. The day was also an excellent opportunity for the Aprilia owners to become acquainted with one another and plan future events, such as test rides on race tracks and trips to motorshows for the launch of new Aprilia bikes.

MY BIKE MOVIE

CALIFORNIA TOUR FOR THE 20 YEARS
OF THE MOTO GUZZI FALCONE CLUB

my bike movie

Last September, the Moto Guzzi Falcone Club of Schio (Vicenza) set off on a truly challenging tour. The trip had begun a few weeks earlier, when the Guzzi bikers packed their splendid vintage motorcycles on to a cargo ship bound for San Francisco, in California. Then they left Italy too, to join their “darlings” for a holiday riding the length and breadth of northern California. They also produced a great video (complete with English translation, well done!) documenting the main stages in their great adventure, organised to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Vicenza club, a faithful follower of the Moto Guzzi brand, and the Falcone bike in particular.

For some of the club’s older members, the trip was their first time trip in California. A number of them were accompanied by their wives, who followed their husbands in a car (riding pillion for the entire journey was too tiring) and had a whale of a time. Not least because the “red Falcone” group (around fifteen Guzzi bikers, including American friends from Moto Guzzi Classics) were an impressive sight on every road they travelled down. The video also features a series of mini-interviews with “characters” the bikers met along the way.
It’s a great story, combining friendship, love of travel and freedom, under the banner of the eagle emblazoned on the jackets and t-shirts of the doughty Guzzi bikers.
