THE 2014 COLLECTION:
THE NEW VESPA 946 “BELLISSIMA”

It astonished everyone when it made its debut, and it is already a milestone in the remarkable story of the Vespa, an acknowledged item of Italian style around the world. This is the 946, the most luxurious Vespa scooter ever built in the brand’s 68-year history.

Vespa 946 @Paris
After the success of the first collection, “Ricordo Italiano”, issued in 2013 – in two sophisticated classic colours (White, Black) – demanding customers can now aspire to the star of the 2014 collection, named “Bellissima”. The superlative is obligatory for a vehicle that is a true ‘work of art’, the result of a refined style and technology research project. The Vespa 946 has become a timeless ‘object of desire’. Owning one of these scooters, now available in two new sophisticated colours – Metallic Grey or Midnight Blue – is a unique, exclusive pleasure. An emotion that is, quite simply, bellissima.

Conceived as a valuable work of renaissance art, but built with XXI-century cutting-edge technology, the Vespa 946 has been designed to man’s measure. Attention to fuel consumption and emissions, all-digital instruments, a state-of-the-art technological heart, perfect for covering longer distances and for the urban commute, combine with the best materials in an exemplary construction quality to make this scooter unique of its kind, an exclusive means of transport without precedent in the history of mobility.
Tradition and innovation: a steel sheet frame with aluminium details. Maximum safety: ABS braking and ASR traction control. Eco-sustainability and economy: 3V electronic-injection engine, best-in-class reduction of consumption and emissions. Technology and style: full-LED lamps and indicators, full LCD instrument panel.

VESPA 946. BACK FROM THE FUTURE.
The essentiality of the design endows even the most impersonal functions with style and individuality. The Vespa 946 is a pure expression of a style synonymous, in the minds of millions of travellers and devotees, with freedom of movement and expression. A far-sighted projection of sustainable mobility, whose form and substance crystallise the fundamental aesthetic and dynamic values of the history of the two-wheeler.

CONCEIVED THROUGH PASSION.
Real luxury is realising a more ambitious and fascinating dream every day. Today, the Vespa 946 re-affirms its legend. It enhances the classical values of tradition: the shape of the handlebar, the proportions of the fairing, the plunging curves of the saddle all come from the earliest drawings. Every detail reflects a choice and a reference to Italian-style production, a craftsman’s approach in a futuristic dimension.

ECO-SUSTAINABLE BY VOCATION.
The way to guard against imitations is to look beyond the immediate future. The Vespa 946 has ABS braking and ASR traction control. The 4-stroke 125cc monocylinder engine is a response to requirements that may still be nascent. And it guarantees the best performance in its category. Electronic injection, 3-valve distribution, reduced friction and improved fluid dynamics make for a sharp decrease in consumption and emissions, establishing a new benchmark over and beyond current regulations.

THE CARE OF THE CRAFTSMAN.
Attention to detail has been an integral part of the project right from the start. But when the Vespa 946 moves along the production line, then it really becomes a unique item. From the first stitching on the handgrips to the final polish, everything is done by hand, with the same care as a couturier for his creations. From the press shop to the tumble finishing, the attention and passion is that of an artist’s atelier. Because a craftsman is an artist.

PRECIOUS BY CHOICE.

This extraordinary gem could only come with a wealth of quality accessories. From the bags to the hand grips and covers, every item has been designed, developed and tested with the same taste and care as the Vespa 946 itself. The opportunity to enhance the scooter with exclusive details is a privilege and a further exercise in style. A mark of distinction. For the owner, not just for the scooter.

NEW: THE PRIMAVERA 125 AND 150 ABS AND THE SPRINT 125 ABS

NEW SAFETY FOR THE YOUNGEST VESPA SCOOTERS

A FEW MONTHS AFTER THEIR LAUNCH, A NEW ADVANCE FOR THE VESPA PRIMAVERA AND THE VESPA SPRINT WITH ABS BRAKING

THE VESPA CONFIRMS THE CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ITS HALLMARK, RANKING AS ONE OF THE MOST MODERN, ADVANCED AND SAFE VEHICLES ON THE WORLD MARKET

PHOTO GALLERY

Just a few months after their launch, the Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint, the modern versions of the legendary “Vespino”, are now also available with ABS braking. The Sprint 125 and the Primavera 125 and 150, the “small-body” Vespa scooters, present a new technical advance for even greater safety. Locking of the front wheel during sharp braking or on a slippery road surface is usually the greatest hazard for motorbike and scooter riders and passengers. The installation of the ABS antilock braking system is designed precisely to prevent this risk, for a pleasant and completely safe ride.
The front wheel on the Vespa Primavera ABS and Vespa Sprint ABS is equipped with a speed detection system – a sensor and a tone wheel – which instantaneously measures the wheel’s speed and deceleration compared to that of the scooter. The sensor communicates with an electro-hydraulic control unit, which activates the ABS system if the wheel decelerates abruptly, preventing locking and consequent loss of control over the vehicle, thereby guaranteeing stability and efficient braking even on surfaces with a low coefficient of friction.
This sophisticated safety system, developed specifically for the “small-body” Vespa models, also weighs very little, leaving the vehicle's kerb weight virtually unchanged, in keeping with the Vespa’s tradition as one of the lightest scooters in the world. The new ABS system raises the already high safety level guaranteed by the new Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint. The painstaking care taken in designing the various components has resulted in unprecedented levels of rigidity, but without compromising the weight of the structure. Compared with the Vespa LX and Vespa S (the models replaced by the Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint respectively), body rigidity has been increased by 36%, while longitudinal flexural rigidity has increased by 154%. The benefits in terms of safety and riding pleasure are tangible, for scooters with dynamic qualities and exceptional stability and handling. The Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint also introduce a new type of front suspension, with a completely redesigned system that halves sliding friction for greater riding comfort and enhanced shock absorption. Other contributors to road safety are the new wheel-rim sizes on both the Vespa Primavera and the Vespa Sprint.

VESPA PRIMAVERA

The new Vespa Primavera appropriates all the values that decreed the success of the first Primavera forty-five years ago. The first Vespa with this name made its debut in 1968 and was a revolution: small, agile, powered by a lively engine, the Primavera gave several generations wings and was manufactured without interruption until 1982, becoming a legendary model and one of the best-sellers in the history of the Vespa.

Vespa Primavera

Youthful, innovative, a technological ground-breaker, agile and dynamic, attentive to its environmental surroundings, the modern-day eponymous heir of the Primavera is a star in its own time, inheriting all the freshness and carefree spirit of its predecessor.
With a radically new design, a new all-steel body, new dimensions, still agile but even more stable and comfortable, today’s Vespa Primavera – powered by ultra-modern and ecological 125cc and 150cc 4-stroke 3V engines – incorporates some of the stylistic and technical solutions of the Vespa 946, the most luxurious, expensive and technologically advanced model in the history of the Vespa.

VESPA SPRINT

The Vespa Sprint is the most advanced expression of the sporty Vespa. Packed with state-of-the-art technical features and completely redesigned to deliver superior stability and handling levels, the Vespa Sprint was developed with riding pleasure in mind, to make even the daily commute fun. Beginning in the mid Sixties, a new generation of sporty Vespa scooters invaded European streets. They were small, quick and extremely agile, as modern as the youngsters riding them. For the generations seeking freedom and pursuing the speed of the ideas that were changing the world, they provided wings.

Vespa Sprint

So the Vespa Sprint embodies the heritage of a tradition of vitality and youthfulness. Conceived as an evolution of the Vespa Primavera project, it is intended for young people of all ages, enhancing the sporty style evoked by its legendary name. The Vespa Sprint features a small, lightweight body that is also comfortable and protective, made entirely in steel and characterised by an extremely youthful line, with a robust rectangular headlight. It has large 12” wheels with spectacular aluminium alloy rims and is powered by three ultra-modern and ecological engines available in two different displacements. The 125cc version adopts a single-cylinder 4-stroke 3-valve engine with electronic injection, a global benchmark in terms of low consumption and environmental friendliness.

PARIS: ONLINE ON THE PIAGGIO MP3 500
WITH THE INNOVATIVE APP “PMP”

THE PIAGGIO MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM CONSISTS OF A CONTROL UNIT CONNECTING THE IPHONE TO THE VEHICLE VIA BLUETOOTH AND A FREE APP THAT TRANSFORMS THE IPHONE/IPOD INTO AN ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTION ON-BOARD COMPUTER. THE PMP IS AVAILABLE FOR THE MP3 MY 2014, THE VESPA GT AND GTS WITH ABS-ASR, AND THE VESPA 946
Paris is timeless, a city whose charm is intact. Yet Paris is also traffic. A great deal of traffic. Paris is the Piaggio MP3 500, the new flagship of a range that has undergone a complete renewal. To continue a story that has gone from success to success, especially in France. Paris is the mirror of a mobility phenomenon launched by the innovative Italian three-wheeler. Larger-diameter wheels, a smoother, easier-to-manage engine, an ECO map to save on fuel, high-quality finishes and a re-styled rear look: the new MP3 500 (available in Business and Sport versions) has beaten expectations, re-establishing the scooter’s lead in a category, three-wheel individual mobility, that has seen new models, new manufacturers and project philosophies arrive on the market. The Piaggio MP3, however, was the first and is still unbeatable. And Paris is confirmed as its country of choice.

RIDING SAFE WITH ABS AND ASR

Put to the test on the streets of Paris, the city that consecrated it as the gold standard across Europe, the new MP3 500 has been designed to accommodate a series of devices supporting the rider. Some of these are concerned with safety – this is the first three-wheeler in the world equipped with an ABS braking system integrated with an exclusive ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulation) system, a Piaggio Group technological first – and help make the riding experience on the Piaggio three-wheeler easier and safer. Other devices meet only apparently secondary needs, such as route information, data on vehicle behaviour, itinerary management.

CONNECTED TO THE WORLD WITH THE PMP

Paris hosted the recent international press launch for the Piaggio MP3 500. After the first dynamic test in the morning, there was a surprise in the afternoon: on a special bracket mounted on the handlebar, the journalists found an iPhone 5. Linked to a special control unit, the smartphone, like an iPod, acts as the interface for the Piaggio Multimedia Platform, developed to give the rider information and services in addition to those usually provided by the vehicle instruments. There are four main categories: virtual dashboard; additional trip computer with data recording; vehicle safety and diagnostic alerts; advanced navigation functions. Data is transmitted via Bluetooth from the control unit to the smartphone, where all the journalists have to do is download and open the free PMP app. The ride begins!

A MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM FOR THE RIDER
From the foot of the Eiffel Tower we head for La Défense, the skyscraper district. We keep an eye on the iPhone display, which, via the PMP, has been transformed into a virtual dashboard. It shows five types of information simultaneously, selected by the rider. And there is a large choice: speed, engine revs, torque, power, battery voltage, average and real-time consumption. The most interesting is the information people usually never bother about: estimated angle of tilt, longitudinal acceleration and rear-wheel acceleration slip, something exclusive to MP3s like ours, equipped with ABS and ASR.

The estimated tilt angle, shown in degrees, is particularly interesting due to the particular technical characteristics of the MP3, whose two front wheels enable it to deliver a unique dynamic performance. Down the broad Parisian boulevards and then round the bends of the financial district, the tilt angle acquires real significance, shedding light on the added value of the MP3 in terms of riding safety. Furthermore, a special “Grip Warning” appears when road grip limits are continually exceeded: a plain invitation to take care.

EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL, FROM THE TYRES TO FUEL
We take a look at the tyres: just select the specific PMP function to check tyre pressure. Based on the tyres’ rolling resistance, the system verifies the correct pressure, without the need for sensors. Meanwhile, we use the touch screen, active only at speeds of under 5 km/h to avoid dangerous distractions when riding, to modify the information displayed by the virtual dashboard. The ECO Ride function presents clear infographics on the efficiency of our riding style, essential at a time of environmental awareness and high fuel costs.

ON-BOARD NAVIGATOR: YOU CAN’T GET LOST
How do you avoid getting lost in a chaotic city like Paris? By activating the PMP’s navigation system. This is not an alternative to a traditional navigator, which is already provided by the iPhone 5, but an extra support: for example, with “Find my Bike”, the PMP records the vehicle’s GPS position so the scooter can be found quickly when parked in unfamiliar locations (and is also a useful anti-theft device). It also displays the nearest fuel service stations, and Piaggio Service centres. Whether you need to fill up your tank or have your vehicle serviced, the information can be easily accessed.

ROUTE RECORDING AND STORAGE
After testing the MP3 in a city environment like Paris where it is an undoubted star, why not keep a log of your route? No sooner said than done: the on-board computer and the PMP record key information, including distance, top and average speed, average fuel consumption and… maximum tilt! Everything you need to compare your riding style with your friends. And before parking our new MP3 500, we make a quick check of the vehicle. Thanks to the Piaggio Multimedia Platform.

PRESS TEST
Below is a brief selection of the many international press reports on the test rides in Paris. Three from France (a tribute to the French market, which has a passion for the MP3) and one from Britain.

THE NEW PIAGGIO MP3 300:
MASTER OF THE CITY

THE NEW MORE METROPOLITAN VERSION OF THE NEW PIAGGIO MP3 IS COMING SOON, POWERED BY A 300CC ENGINE, WHICH MAINTAINS ALL THE UNPARALLELED QUALITIES OF THE REVAMPED THREE-WHEELED SCOOTER PAR EXCELLENCE, MARKET LEADER WITH 150,000 UNITS SOLD. AGILE, LIGHTWEIGHT AND EASY TO RIDE, ALONG WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE AND REDUCED CONSUMPTION. MAXIMUM SAFETY THANKS TO THE ABS AND ASR SYSTEMS, EXTREME COMFORT FOR RIDER AND PASSENGER, EXCELLENT CARGO SPACE WITH A BRAND NEW AND UNIQUE STYLE. PIAGGIO MP3 300 CAN BE RIDDEN WITH A STANDARD CAR DRIVER'S LICENSE

In 2006 Piaggio brought the future to today inventing a new form of transport. With Mp3, Piaggio reinvented city transport. Piaggio Mp3 is the world's first 3-wheel scooter, the concrete response to the demand for easy-to-handle, extremely safe city vehicles to get about in the city or reach the city centre from the ever growing suburbs. The two front wheels and the exclusive patented suspension system joining them combine the safety of a car with the simplicity and practicality of a scooter and the fun of a motor cycle with dynamic riding when turning. Therefore Piaggio Mp3 is able to satisfy a truly global demand: from drivers looking for a more practical yet safe alternative to the experienced motorcyclist able to appreciate the advantages and technical features of a vehicle that has, on its own, created a new market segment of which it is the undisputed leader.
After 150,000 units sold with extraordinary distribution points in the major European cities, Piaggio launches the new Mp3 three-wheeled scooter range. Just a few months after the introduction of the revolutionary Piaggio Mp3 500 the 300 version is coming to the market, particularly suited for quickly manoeuvring through the city. This means that the new Piaggio Mp3 is now available in two different engine sizes, each of which is available in two different versions – Sport and Business – to complete a true family three-wheeled vehicle that is capable of meeting any and all daily mobility needs. The 300cc version maintains all the aesthetic and technical characteristics of the newly revamped Piaggio Mp3 which places it a step ahead of the competition, combining it with a high performance engine and reduced consumption. The 300cc 4-stroke 4-valve liquid-cooled engine with electronic injection delivers a maximum power of 16.5 kW (22.5 HP) at 7,500 rpm, with a torque output of 23.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These are figures that translate, on one side, into excellent response in acceleration during constant city stop-and-go riding and on the other into a top speed which is more than capable of handing motorway riding, guaranteeing the possibility of long range travel in total comfort.

NEW FRAME, NEW BODY, NEW FUNCTIONS
The Piaggio Mp3 300 stems from the newly revamped technical platform of the Mp3 500. The Piaggio Mp3 frame has been redesigned with the dual objective of providing, on the one hand, excellent stability and precision and, on the other, a wider range of uses. The new architecture meets these two important requirements, creating the best Piaggio Mp3 ever built in terms of dynamic qualities, safety standards and comfort for rider and passenger. The new space available improves the ergonomics and optimizes the use of the space under seat for loads.
The careful complete restyling adds more comfort on-board. The seat has become sumptuous: flat and comfortable for two people to sit on, an improvement on the earlier generation of the Piaggio Mp3, with ergonomic benefits, starting from the position of the legs, more extended and relaxed. In particular the new triangulation handlebars-saddle-footplate is larger, making riding easier and improving vehicle control. And it's not only the rider who benefits. Conceived as an alternative to the car, the new generation Piaggio Mp3 also provides additional passenger comfort: with increased space, and a more relaxed sitting position, plus the advantages of a pull-out footplate. The large compartment under the seat, fitted with 12 volt plug, courtesy light and mat, has been redesigned for additional uses, due to the regular, almost rectangular shape, without indentations or partitions, so every square centimetre can be used, for example to store two full-face helmets or a laptop holder. As before the seat opens electrically with power-assisted shock absorber for smooth, safe opening. The flat streamlined tail for an easily assembled box (just one of the many accessories available), further increasing the already exceptional load capacity of the new Piaggio Mp3.

NEW SAFETY: THE FIRST 3-WHEELER WITH ABS AND ASR
Piaggio Mp3 has been the first 3-wheeled scooter. Today, the new Piaggio Mp3 is the first three-wheeler in the world with ABS brake system integrated with ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulation) traction control.
The ASR system is an electronic traction control device regulating the driving wheel slippage. The ASR can be switched off simply and it guarantees safety by preventing the slippage of the rear wheel on slippery or wet roads and uneven surfaces, for excellent rear tyre grip and road holding in all conditions. The Piaggio Group is the first manufacturer to use rear wheel traction control for a scooter, in-house developed technology, based on racing experience and subsequently adapted and built into city vehicles.
The ABS system maximizes active safety preventing wheel blockage under braking and providing full control of the vehicle at all times. Developed specifically for the Piaggio Mp3, it uses a Continental control unit and three channels controlling the three wheels individually modulating only the braking force to prevent grip loss. The new version of the Piaggio Mp3 uses disc brakes on all three wheels, but the diameter of the front discs has been increased from 240 to 258 mm, helping to increase power and effectiveness, and reducing the braking distance. Greater safety and a smoother ride are provided by new larger front wheels with diameter up from 12 to 13 inches.
This is the resounding success due to the Mp3 exclusive Piaggio dual independent tilting front wheel technology, thanks to the four bar linkage suspension which the leading Group in Europe designed and developed before any other manufacturer in the world to ensure maximum riding pleasure in complete safety. This is the original project patented by Piaggio, with a roll mechanism comprising four aluminium alloy arms, fitted on four hinges on the central sleeve and two side sleeves connected to the arms by pins and ball bearings. Inside the side sleeves, the right-hand and left-hand steering tube rotates in a classic single-arm set-up.
The blocking mechanism of the front suspension, a distinguishing feature of the 3-wheel Italian scooter, transforms the balance of the Piaggio Mp3 from dynamic to static. Start up the Piaggio Mp3 and it stays in balance on the three wheels without the need for a stand (fitted nonetheless). To resume normal operation accelerate or use the dedicated push button. This means you never need to put your foot in the ground and you can park the Piaggio Mp3 anywhere, easily and without effort.

NEW STYLE, TO DISCOVER
The new Piaggio Mp3 has been given a completely new look, now more modern and elegant with evident hints of a motor car and a car-style refined finish and high perceived quality. The Style Centre of the Piaggio Group has completely redesigned the distinctive features, modernizing them and making them even more individualistic. The front shield recalls the original model but has a totally new form. The new smoke-grey windshield provides more protection and can be adjusted to three different heights. The headlights and indicators are new with high efficiency daytime lights with 7 LEDs, adapted from the auto industry and modernizing the look of the front of the scooter. The wheel rims boast a new and elegant 5 split spoke design: reminiscent of saloon cars and luxury autos.
The handlebars are new as is the complete set of modern instruments in two conventional round panels and a multi-purpose digital panel with data on fuel consumption (average and current), average and maximum speed, fuel gauge, travel time, ambient temperature and ice alarm. The instrument panel also includes a clock, dual mapping of the engine CPU, total and trip counter and battery voltage reader. The 11 lights on the instrument panel display the functioning of the headlights, dipped headlights, indicators, reserve fuel, oil pressure, warning (injection), immobilizer, ABS, ASR and four emergency lights. In the centre part, just beneath the display, a series of 4 warning lights are placed which indicate: roll lock warning, engine shut-down, no roll and hand brake. Push buttons under the handlebars are to open the saddle and switch off the ASR.
Also completely new is the central portion of the tunnel and counter-shield now with two anti-impact pads the colour of the saddle in front of the rider's knees. Complete with pull-out hook for bags. The compartment above the instruments now has a drawer and USB connection, ideal for recharging a smartphone and other devices.
The rear zone of the Piaggio Mp3 is very different from the earlier model, with a new body. The line was inspired by the latest generation of Piaggio GT maxi-scooters. The tail is more streamlined and dynamic, elegantly truncated, highlighting the sports character of the Piaggio Mp3, reflected in its exceptional road holding and tilt while turning. The surface finish is now smoother, reinforcing the streamlined look of the vehicle, which has a highly dynamic appearance. The tail stop and position lights incorporate LED technology. The parcel holder and passenger handle, in aluminium, complete the line of the new, super comfortable saddle.

PIAGGIO MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM: CONNECTED AT ALL TIMES BY SMARTPHONE
The sophisticated Piaggio Multimedia Platform, available from among the many dedicated accessories for the Piaggio Mp3, illustrated in the catalogue, connects your smartphone to the on-board electronic system, turning it into a multi-purpose instrument, a computer able to display simultaneously data such as speed, revs, engine power and torque in real time, as well as acceleration in a straight line, tilt in cornering, average and current fuel consumption, average speed and battery voltage among a host of other functions. A smartphone connected with the Piaggio Multimedia Platform can also be used to display maps and routes or to find the location, for example, of petrol stations or support services. The tyre status control function (only available for Mp3 300 and 500 equipped with the ABS/ASR) synergistically exploits the vehicle's sensors and the iPhone to monitor tyre wear and air, warning the user before any potentially critical situations arise; the function of general analysis shows the overall vehicle status.

TWO VERSIONS DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, SAME SAFETY
As before, the Piaggio Mp3 is available in Business and Sport versions, with dedicated equipment and colour schemes.
Piaggio Mp3 300 Business: sober and elegant. The Business version, elegant and city-friendly, characterized by a “Business” plate on the rear part of the tail, distinguishes itself through some prestige details, such as the chrome-plated exhaust pipe, the new brown saddle with dual lining, dedicated rear-view mirrors and the finish in gunmetal grey of the central tunnel, the handlebars and the passenger handles. The elegance of Piaggio Mp3 300 Business is highlighted by the two chrome-plated versions available: Bianco Iceberg (White) and Nero Universo (Black).
Piaggio Mp3 300 Sport: sporting and dynamic. The Sport version of Piaggio Mp3 300 is distinguished by the “Sport” plate on the rear of the tail and the numerous items with shiny black finish, such as the protection of the end of the exhaust pipe, the passenger handles, the handlebars and moulding of the central tunnel. The black saddle of the Sport version has a lining in two different materials. There are three dedicated colour schemes for the Sport version of the new Piaggio Mp3 300: Nero Carbonio (Black), Argento Cometa (Silver) and Blu Laguna (Navy Blue).

A COMPLETE RANGE OF ACCESSORIES:
COMFORT AND FUNCTIONALITY

The range of accessories for the new Mp3 is based on a precise design philosophy: to provide the maximum on-board comfort and maximum functionality in daily use, to make the life of the commuter easier with the Piaggio three-wheel scooter.

PHOTO GALLERY

The large rear trunk, which can be unhooked rapidly, with 50 litre capacity, can house two full-face helmets. The upper shield is painted the same colour as the vehicle and has a comfortable backrest to make the passenger's ride more enjoyable. For daily use and in all environmental conditions, the windshield accessory, in high quality anti-chip material, guarantees optimum protection from the air and weather. A great deal of care is put into aesthetics, with rods with the same finish as other vehicle details.
In addition the leg-covering fabric, an increasingly important accessory for commuters whatever the season and irrespective of the weather conditions, was designed to provide maximum warmth and protection against the rain on the new Mp3. The fabric is designed for the vehicle and for perfect safety, and is stable even at high speeds. The rider is also protected by a further function of the new Piaggio Mp3: thermal and waterproof protection for the hands, the Tunnel Bag, placed simply behind the countershield, electronic anti-theft systems and the Comfort Gel saddle, which has gel inserts under the lining to provide maximum comfort to the rider and passenger.
The on-board technology is enhanced by the accessories. Piaggio MP3 can be fitted with the Piaggio Multimedia Platform, to enable dialogue between your smartphone and the vehicle. Piaggio Multimedia Platform is able to manage a huge amount of information relating to the vehicle, useful for the journey.

STREET FOOD:
A GROWING BUSINESS

THE APE AND THE PORTER ARE THE VEHICLES OF CHOICE FOR VEHICLE OUTFITTERS, WHO “CREATE” SPECIAL VERSIONS TO SUIT ALL TASTES, TRANSFORMING PIAGGIO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES INTO THREE- AND FOUR-WHEEL CAFES, PIZZERIAS AND ICE CREAM PARLOURS
In the USA, it’s widespread, as much a fixture of the urban landscape as America’s yellow cabs; in Europe and Italy, it’s a fast-growing trend: today, street food is the alternative and, above all, fast way to eat and drink (sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta, coffee, cappuccino, tea, cocktails, ice cream, pancakes, wraps, doughnuts, pizza, French fries). And over the last few years, the street food phenomenon has offered an business opportunity to beat the crisis.

In Italy, vehicle outfitters who are customers of Piaggio Commercial Vehicles have developed impressive expertise in creating stylish, high-quality vehicles for a full range of special needs, down to the tiniest details. As a result, the street food experience is even more fun for the consumer, and makes for a trendy atmosphere at public events. Take a look at these special versions fitted out for the Ape and the Porter.

PIZZA ANY PLACE:
THANKS TO THE
GO-ANYWHERE APE

Equipped with a rechargeable battery, PIZZA ANY PLACE is an independent itinerant pizzeria with no need for worktops or service counters. The van interior is already equipped for the purpose. The vehicle can be powered by a silenced generator or connected directly to the mains. The idea combines the street-food expertise of British company Universepizza Ltd. and the creativity of an Italian professional oven producer, Forni Dorigo, with more than 20 years’ experience.

Pizza Any Place - Ape

The specially equipped Piaggio Ape van (the outfitting can also be adapted to a Porter van) turns out six pizzas at a time, and can cook 70 in one hour. Seeing is believing

Ape 6 pizzas

Pizza Any Place made its debut last September at the Green Meadows Festival in London; in two days, the three-wheel pizzeria turned out 350 pizzas and eventually had to turn people away because… it had run out of dough!

VS – SPECIAL VEHICLES AND A QUICK-CHANGE APE

In an economic climate where flexibility is essential, food has gone smart. Thanks to on-the-road chefs experimenting with new ways and places to attract diners, street food has turned into a mania. Large chains and small start-ups: the street food business is attracting many investors. They include 35-year-old Davide Cavalieri D’Oro from Turin, marketing & sales director at VS – Veicoli Speciali – a mechanics firm in Leinì (Piedmont), which has turned outfitting of street food vehicles into its core business. Food trucks for gourmet delights or imaginatively converted Piaggio Ape vans: there’s not a vehicle VS cannot transform into a street-smart icon! Having started his career in the family mechanics shop, Davide was one of the first to realise the potential of street food and equip his business. In recent years, he has been joined by seven expert mechanics, carpenters and fitters, and the small VS shed has turned into a large-scale workshop, attracting customers from all over the world. VS revenues have soared: 254,000 euro in 2011, 530,000 in 2012 and 990,000 in 2013. For 2014, VS projects more than 1,500,000 euro.
Grom, Rivareno as well as Martini & Rossi, Aperol and Raspini in Italy; Cameo, Da Zavola, Clasico Argentino on the international market, which accounts for 50 percent of sales. These are just some of the well-known corporate customers who have asked VS to equip their vehicles.

“Foreign customers are particularly interested in refitted Piaggio Ape vans,” says Davide. “We’ve just delivered two to Miami and three in Germany. We also have customers in Switzerland, France, Hungary and Montenegro. In our business, Made in Italy is a guarantee of quality. We also offer support services abroad, which are highly appreciated: for example in America, they are not familiar with the mechanics of this type of vehicle or are unable to find spare parts. A mobile outlet is an alternative way to begin a new business, and is often cheaper to set up than a shop. Many young people come to us to start their business, without needing an astronomical budget.”

VESPA WORLD DAYS 2014

AT THE COURT OF HER MAJESTY THE VESPA

REFLECTIONS ON A MEMORABLE EVENT IN MANTUA DEDICATED TO THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF THE SCOOTERS, FOR AN EMOTION-PACKED WEEKEND

In an age when the largest communities are virtual, one real tangible community is alive and flourishing. The community of Vespa lovers, who meet up every year for Vespa World Days to share their passion for the world’s most famous two-wheeler. To take part in the big event, instead of turning on your computer, you mount your Vespa and set off for the chosen destination. An itinerant community that moves to a new location every year, behind the scenes Vespa World Days involves a huge organisational effort.

BACKSTAGE AT THE BIG EVENT
Italy's candidacy for the rally was accepted two years ago, during the edition held in London in parallel with the Olympic Games. Later, Mantua was chosen from among the Italian Vespa Clubs as the host club. The rotation system guarantees an alternation of host countries and cities, to allow participants to discover new places, cultures and traditions. This year, they discovered Mantua, a splendid Renaissance town in Lombardy and a UNESCO world heritage site. Like the choice of host country/club, preparations for the event begin months earlier. The same is true of the preparations of the Vesparados themselves: months spent at their local club discussing arrangements, more time spent in the garage getting the scooter ready for the journey. All of which is an integral part of the event.

TRAVELS WITH THE VESPA
Undertaking a journey on a Vespa is an experience unlike any other: it requires passion, dedication and patience. A speed of 90 km/h is normal for some riders, an objective for others, for the majority a goal that is difficult to achieve. Yet a journey on a Vespa offers sensations no other trip can provide. If you’re on your own, you can take time to contemplate the beauties of life as it slowly unfolds like the asphalt ribbon taking you to your destination (if there are two of you, you can share your thoughts). No need to hurry, you know you will reach journey’s end with a small adventure to relate. The Vespa is the guiding spirit of the participants at Vespa World Days. As in previous years, most of them travelled on their own scooters to Mantua, in some cases riding hundreds of miles from Finland, Greece, Portugal and Croatia.

VESPA WORLD DAYS 2014: DAY ONE

CITIZEN OF THE WORLD
It doesn’t take long to realise – especially if you take part in Vespa World Days – that the Vespa is not just a passion: it’s a culture and a way of life, and has been for generations. There is no “typical Vesparado”, the common denominator is the Vespa, which brings together old and young, men and women of all ages and provenance. The Vespa means Italy, but it is a citizen of the world. Wherever it goes, it is recognised and admired by everyone. Everyone has at least one memory associated with the Vespa. And those memories are always happy ones. And that’s no insignificant achievement.

HAPPY MEMORIES
Like the memories created at Vespa World Days in Mantua. The rattle of the vintage Vespa mufflers, accompanied by the unmistakeable pungent smell of the two-stroke engines; the most eccentric customisations, reflecting the lifestyles of the owners; the Vespa scooters loaded down with tents and sleeping bags; the ten thousand Vespa scooters in the parade on 14 June; the perfect harmony between the latest models, like the new Vespa GTS 300, and the vintage models from more than sixty years ago, all of them perfectly roadworthy; the more than thirty languages spoken at the event, by participants from more than thirty countries round the world; the gestures people now immediately associate with the Vespa, like the kick to start the older models. These are some of the snapshots to treasure, in hearts and minds. Thank you Vespa, beloved queen, for the emotions you provide.

MANTUA WELCOMES 132 VESPA CLUBS FROM 32 COUNTRIES. THE PORDENONE VESPA CLUB TRIUMPHS IN THE 2014 VESPA TROPHY. NEXT VWD 2015 IN CROATIA
The Mantua edition of Vespa World Days will be long be remembered as the largest Vespa Club rally ever in the history of the event. The 10-km procession of Vespa scooters that paraded through the roads of Mantua and the Lombardy countryside to San Benedetto Po on 14 June was a remarkable sight. Well over 10,000 Vespa scooters took part.

Mantua provided the stage for four days (12-15 June) of partying, music, friendship and devotion to the Vespa. Vespa Club members arrived from all over Europe (from Finland to Greece) as well as from Argentina, Brazil, Israel, the USA, Jordan and Kuwait. The event was testimony to a passion, passion for the Vespa, that extends beyond state borders all over the world, with more than 18 million Vespa scooters on the roads of five continents.

A PARTY AND PRIZES AT THE VESPA VILLAGE

Equally memorable was the party at the Vespa Village for the prize-giving evening. The star of the show was the Pordenone Vespa Club, the winner of the Vespa Trophy, the competition for Vespa Club travellers whose Travel Books provide a record of all their stopovers in the journey to Mantua. The goal for the clubs competing for the Trophy from 25 countries was to reach the Mantua rally and visit the greatest possible number of Check Points with the greatest possible number of Vespa scooters. Pordenone dominated the scoreboard, ahead of the Cerignola Vespa Club and the Serbian Vespa Club “We Ride Everywhere”.
The Vespa Club of Italy presented prizes to all the national Vespa Clubs taking part in this extraordinary event. The last official act in the great 2014 rally was the handover to the Vespa Club of Biograd in Croatia. The splendid city on the Dalmatian coast will be the host of Vespa World Days 2015.

EXHIBITION IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL:
“VESPA, UM ICONE ITALIANO”

Coinciding with the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil, the Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB; instituição da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura) and the Italian Cultural Institute in São Paulo are holding a major exhibition on the world’s most famous Italian scooter, entitled “Vespa: um ícone italiano – História, Cultura e Design”. The event has been organised in cooperation with the Piaggio Foundation and Museum in Pontedera, the Multimedia Cinema Centre, and with the support of the Italian Embassy in Brazil.
Officially opened on 10 June 2014, the exhibition has won a warm response from the media, collectors and motorbike enthusiasts. It can be seen at the Museum in São Paulo/Museu da Casa Brasileira until 3 August.
The history of the celebrated scooter (and its presence in Brazil) is illustrated in a series of large panels and displays of dozens of Vespas, from the oldest models to the latest arrivals. The exhibition offers an extraordinary review of a product that has fascinated whole generations of enthusiasts in every continent, accompanying changing social customs and fashions.

For the countless Vespa fans in Brazil, the “Scooteria Paulista” club (formed in 2010, and active in the cities of São Paulo, Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, Osasco, Santos, Taboão da Serra, Ferraz de Vasconcelos, Jacareí and Mogi das Cruzes) has organised a special meeting.
TV Cronopios has filmed a special report on the exhibition, entitled “Ma che bella storia!” (What a wonderful story!) with an exceptional presenter: Ricardo Peruchi, the exhibition curator (and communication advisor at the Istituto Europeo di Design, IED São Paulo). The video includes interviews with collector Andreas Triantafyllo and a mention of the Scooteria Paulista club. Here’s the report.

Ma che bella storia!: “Vespa: um ícone italiano”

Of the huge range of events organised in São Paulo for the World Cup, the exhibition on the Vespa has proved to be one of the most popular. It has also attracted wide media coverage: full-page items have appeared in the “Jornal Folha de São Paulo”, the capital’s leading daily, and in Brazil’s top design magazine, “Bamboo”, and numerous television reports have been broadcast, for example on the SBT and Band channels. The Vespa exhibition has also been reported outside Brazil, in the “Clarín”, Argentina’s main daily newspaper, and received wide attention in the Italian media.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VESPA IN BRAZIL

Designed in 1946 by the Italian engineering genius Corradino d'Ascanio, the Piaggio Vespa quickly become a postwar best-seller and a mass means of transport, its popularity spreading from Italy throughout the world.

The origins of the Vespa in Brazil: Piaggio and Panauto S.A. (1957-1963).
Piaggio set up operations in Brazil in 1957 after granting a manufacturing license to the “Panauto S.A.” company of Rio de Janeiro. Initially, in its factory in Santa Cruz, 40 miles from Rio, Panauto produced a Vespa 125; beginning in 1960, this was replaced by a four-gear Vespa 150. The Vespa frame and other parts were produced in Brazil, while the engine was imported from Italy, together with the flywheel. 1960 also saw the start-up of a local assembly operation for the Ape (known as the Vespacar), with the parts shipped from the Piaggio factory in Pontedera, Tuscany.

PHOTO GALLERY

The Santa Cruz factory was extended and by 1963 covered an area of 100,000 m2, of which 4,400 m2 under cover. The company had 270 employees and was owned 25% by Piaggio. In the early years, the Vespa was a great success on the Brazilian market, but the country’s growing economic and financial problems (and exorbitant customs duties) created difficulties, and in 1963 Piaggio was forced to close its first venture on Brazilian territory.

The 1980s: Motovespa and the Manaus factory.
The scooter reached its maximum splendour in Brazil in 1980 with the Motovespa do Brasil Ltda. company, which had 140 authorised dealers operating in locations from Manaus, where the two-wheelers were produced, to Porto Alegre. This was the period in which Brazil was returning to political democracy, and the ideals of youth and liberty were widespread. Demand soared for the Vespa, an Italian symbol associated with these concepts.

PHOTO GALLERY

Thanks to its innovative design, over the years the Vespa has been shown in countless design, art, and science and technology museums. It is part of the permanent collections of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). The exhibition at the Museu da Casa Brazileira in São Paulo has revived Brazilians’ interest in the Italian scooter.

Italian Cultural Institute of São Paulo

Founded in 1945, the Italian Cultural Institute in São Paulo is an official Italian government agency, located in Avenida Morumbi, 436, in an historic building constructed in the 1920s in the neoclassical style, which houses the agency’s administrative offices, a library and a multimedia room. With 25 million Italians and descendants of Italians living in Brazil, the institute has the important and complex task of maintaining traditional values and links with the culture of the original Italian community that came to Brazil in 1880, followed by many other waves of immigrants. The institute also promotes initiatives designed to promote the Italian language and culture, and to foster Italo-Brazilian cooperation through mutual exchanges of skills and expertise.

VIETNAM: A PHOTO TOUR ON THE VESPA

FORTY TRAVELLERS ON 25 SPRINT AND GTS SCOOTERS, FOUR DAYS ON THE ROAD, MORE THAN 350 MILES ALONG THE SOUTHERN COASTS OF VIETNAM. A RECORD OF A PASSION FOR THE VESPA IN BREATH-TAKING SETTINGS

The forty fortunate participants on the “2014 Photo Tour” – all of them journalists and bloggers – travelled through the most spectacular scenery of the Indochinese peninsula. Their trip, on twenty-five Vespa scooters, took them from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, a city famous for its beautiful beaches: a memorable journey during which the journalists and bloggers were able to experience at first hand a ride on two of the most popular models in the Vespa range, the Vespa GTS and the Vespa Sprint. The first is a robust traveller, a symbol for freedom and mobility over long distances, while the second is a sportier model, a reference for whole generations for whom the Vespa has always been an ultimate expression of high spirits. The GTS and Sprint were the travelling companions on the rally across Vietnam’s splendid south coast.
Take a look at the gallery of outstanding photos snapped by the Photo Tour participants.

PHOTO GALLERY

In a month that saw the Vietnam Vespa Club take part for the first time in the Vespa World Days event (in Mantua, from 12 to 15 June), the Photo Tour demonstrated how fast enthusiasm for the Vespa is spreading through the Asian nation. In Vietnam as elsewhere, the Vespa is an increasingly important cultural phenomenon, a way to enjoy a passion for two-wheelers that goes beyond simple mobility requirements; a vehicle that has successfully and rapidly exported the values of freedom and style that distinguish one of Italy’s best-known brands.
So while Piaggio Vietnam (Piaggio Group) celebrated the production of more than 410,000 scooters at the factory in Vinch Punch (Hanoi’s industry park), the brand identity of the world’s most famous scooter was consolidated with an event involving the country’s leading media. The initiative attracted an unprecedented following on the social networks, telling millions of fans about one of the most fascinating facets of the Vespa, a timeless legend dedicated to travel and on-the-road adventure.

MAASTRICHT: STAR VIOLINIST ANDRE’ RIEU
ON THE APE CALESSINO FOR A “VENETIAN” CONCERT

No, nothing of the kind had ever been seen in the Netherlands; nor had the Ape Calessino, the stylish Piaggio three-wheeler, ever enjoyed such a distinguished outing. The setting was Maastricht, the capital city of the province of Limburg: famous violinist André Rieu (André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu, born in Maastricht on 1 October 1949, distinguished conductor, violinist and composer) opened the tenth edition of the “Vrjjthof Concerts” in an unforgettable manner, captivating both the public and the media.
In full stage costume, André Rieu and his orchestra entered the central Vrijthof Square for the opening concert on 4 July (with repeat performances on 5 and 6 July), aboard 20 white Ape Calessino vans. Supremely elegant and eagerly photographed.

That was just the start: the theme of the musician’s new CD and 2014 tour is Venice. So the attractive staging for the concert is inspired by the Italian city, with reproductions of its calli, the Rialto bridge and Palazzo Ducale. Even the drivers of the twenty Calessino vans, chosen as typical Italian vehicles, were dressed as Venetian gondoliers. The procession rode through central Maastricht, acclaimed by cheering crowds enthusiastically waving Italian flags, and accompanied by Italian songs.

DANIELE BATTAGLIA, THE RADIO 105 DJ
WITH A PASSION FOR THE VESPA

Daniele Battaglia’s links with music and the Vespa are part of his DNA. Born in 1981, son of Dodi Battaglia, the highly regarded guitarist with the Pooh – a group whose name is a milestone in Italian light music – Daniele studied as a sound technician and began his artistic career as a presenter with Italy's leading radio networks. In 2009, he joined Radio 105, where he currently presents “105 all’una”, on air from Monday to Saturday at 1 p.m.
In 2010, he won the “L’Isola dei Famosi” TV reality show and since then has taken part in and presented a number of television programs. At the end of 2012, he created the Ruffe DaniBattle YouTube channel, where he develops gameplay with Italy's most famous Youtubers.

Ruffle DaniBattle

DANIELE, WE KNOW YOU’RE A VESPARADO. WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN SCOOTERS AND WHAT SORT OF RELATIONSHIP DO YOU HAVE WITH THE VESPA?

“My passion began years ago, with my grandfather’s Vespa. It was love at first sight, and I couldn’t wait to grow up and have a Vespa of my own! Now of course, I have a latest-generation Vespa, but I’d love to restore a vintage model like my grandfather’s.”

THE VESPA IS ONE OF THE POSITIVE SYMBOLS OF ITALY, KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD. WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL VALUES OF “ITALIANESS” IN THE WORLD?

“I’m a great fan of Made in Italy. And the Vespa is a must, for Italians and other nations. Italians are a colourful, cheerful people. The rest of the world admire us for this. Above all, they admire our creativity and imagination. That’s just what the Vespa is: creativity and imagination.”

MUSIC IS ANOTHER GREAT FORCE THAT UNITES DIFFERENT GENERATIONS AND CULTURES. DOES IT HAVE SIMILARITIES WITH THE VESPA?

“Absolutely. For example, Vasco, Ligabue and, now I’m on home ground, the Pooh, bring together people from different generations and cultures. It’s a magical process you can’t explain. People who do this are special. Just like the Vespa, which brings together grandparents and grandchildren.”

YOU WON THE ISOLA DEI FAMOSI, HAVE PRESENTED TV SHOWS AND EVERY DAY YOU CHAT TO MILLIONS OF LISTENERS ON “105 ALL’UNA”. WHAT’S THE NEXT STOP ON YOUR JOURNEY??

“Well, presenting “105 all’una” is just like riding a Vespa. You start off, you know where to begin, and you enjoy the trip so much you don’t want to stop, and you never know where you’ll end up! Metaphors apart, at the moment I’m running some YouTube channels. I have lots of plans and hope I can achieve them. The web is the future and I hope I can get there too with my Vespa!”.

ANTONELLO BLANDI:
CONQUERING HOLLYWOOD

THE VESPA, THE APE, SYMBOLS AND COLOURS FROM SICILY: THE GRAPHIC ARTIST TURNED PAINTER IS ATTRACTING THE INTEREST OF AMERICAN MOVIE STARS LIKE SYLVESTER STALLONE
His canvases are a riot of colour, the brilliant colours of his native Sicily. And one of their recurring subjects is the Ape three-wheeler (known on the island as the “Lapa”), a vehicle with a place in the memories of entire generations of Sicilians, just like the Vespa. Van and scooter are loaded with multi-coloured cottages, against backgrounds of sand, palm trees, meadows and clouds. Just a glance at the works of Antonello Blandi (a graphic artist with an agency in Palermo, born in 1963) puts you in a good mood. The effect is infectious: his exuberant creations have been bought by Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone and Tommy Lee Jones. Blandi has also exhibited his works at many shows, including the recent show at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles.

  • Sicilia colorata - Sylvester Stallone
In the USA, Blandi’s works decorate some of the country’s best-known Sicilian restaurants, frequented by Italian and American VIPs; and his pictures are exhibited by Soho gallery owners. Blandi has also made his name as a graphic designer, a skill that requires synthesis and intuitive flair: he created the logo for Palermo’s official candidacy as 2016 European sport capital.

“SICILIAN CART” APE
AT THE PIAGGIO MUSEUM

One of the more exotic items visitors come across as they wander round the rich vintage vehicle collections at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera is an ornate Ape van, painted in the style of a “Sicilian cart”. The sumptuously decorated van depicts typical scenes from the island’s traditions: from St George defeating the dragon to the symbol of Trinacria (the old name of the kingdom of Sicily), from Mount Etna erupting to popular scenes from Orlando Furioso, with the sea, sun, flowers and fruit dominating the decorations.
The van was painted by artist Roberto Caputo from Barrafranca (Enna), in 2008.

A LONE VESPA RIDER
AT THE “HEROIC” RALLY IN TUSCANY

A VESPA P200E RIDDEN BY ANDREA SABATINI WAS THE ONLY SCOOTER AMONG THE HUNDREDS OF MOTORCYCLES TAKING PART IN THE “CHIANTISHIRE” EVENT. THE NEXT EDITION IS 22-24 MAY 2015

The 2014 edition of the “Eroica in Moto” rally was notable for the participation of a courageous sole Vesparado, who joined the hundreds of motorbikers to complete the road and off-road route, and demonstrate once again the great travel qualities of the Vespa. His name is Andrea Sabatini.
At this year’s “Eroica” or “Heroic in Motorcylcle”, an annual non-competitive event, one of the entrants was a Vespa, the only scooter among the hundreds of motorcycles that registered for the rally. This was the P200E of Andrea Sabatini, a Vespa devotee, who took on the 120-mile route, a combination of roads and off-roads, with a rather unorthodox choice of vehicle, which, for that very reason, delivered an even more exciting experience and a great story to tell.
Despite its name, the “Eroica” is not a motorcycle race, but an opportunity to enjoy a weekend riding round the breath-taking landscapes of the Chianti area in Tuscany. Fifty per cent of the route consists of surfaced roads, the other half of unsurfaced tracks, which, though easy to manoeuvre, attract large numbers of enduro bikes, or on-off two-wheelers, ideal for completing the 125-mile course. The 400 two-wheelers registered for the 2014 rally, from 16 to 18 May, included a particularly “heroic” entrant, a 1982 Vespa P200E, ridden by Andrea Sabatini, 63, from Pistoia, who completed the full distance. The traditional starting point for the rally is Gaiole in Chianti: after a ritual toast, the bikers move off. The surrounding hills create wonderful landscapes, and riding through them on a Vespa makes everything more romantic. The pace, of course, is more sedate than on the fully fitted-out motorcycles, but no less enjoyable. The great thing about riding a Vespa is (and always will be) proceeding at a slower but steady tempo: you know you will reach your destination, albeit a bit later than the others, thanks to the pleasure afforded by the scooter and its proverbial reliability, which means you only have to stop when you need to re-fuel. The finale of the 2014 Eroica was particularly meaningful, passing through Castiglion Fiorentino, birthplace of Fabrizio Meoni, the motorcyclist who died during the 2005 Dakar Rally.

Andrea Sabatini, the brilliant Vespa fan of the rally, told Wide: “I had the idea of entering as something of a challenge, to take on the bikers who ride the off-roads as if they were competing in the Dakar Rally. I simply gave my “queen of the road” a full check-up, and fitted her with off-road tyres. I was the only scooter among 400 mainly large engine enduro bikes. I made a number of stops to admire the splendid Tuscan countryside, which you can really appreciate only when you take these roads. Of course, my competitive streak meant I wasn’t completely relaxed during the rally and “She” responded perfectly, without a single complaint in 300 miles. It was a marvellous experience and has encouraged me to go out even more on this wonderful two-wheeler, the Vespa, an icon of memorable films and real-life stories; in fact, I’m seriously thinking about using it on one of my regular trips in America.”

VIDEO SKY CONTEST: DO YOU VESPA?
THE THREE WINNERS

The invitation to enter the creative contest organised by Vespa in collaboration with Sky Italia was irresistible: “People who love the Vespa are original and unique. We want your video to celebrate the identity of Vespa people. When? In those gratifyingly wonderful moments that strike a chord and reveal the unique person you are to the people around you.

Film those moments as if you were entering the home or the head of “Vespa people” and capturing them when they “tear it up”, in any environment and situation. Your video should be a cool, quirky narration of great moments of self-expression. Including unexpected moments away from the public gaze.”
Taking their inspiration from this brief, the many entrants in the contest shot their video clip and uploaded it. The three clips selected by Piaggio were then broadcast on the main Sky TV channels. Here are the winners.

1st CLASSIFIED:
"A GIRL IN THE SUN” BY ANDREA BANCONE

2ND CLASSIFIED:
“GENUINE PEOPLE” BY ANDREA VERZOLA, ELISA POLI AND PIETRO RAMPAZZO

3RD CLASSIFIED:
“YES, I DO!” BY STEFANO COLONNA AND RICCARDO GHISLETTI

NEW VIDEO:
DO YOU VESPA?

The video is about the attitude and the personality of the Vespa riders: people who walk their own path, who are self-confident and stand out from the crowd.

KARUNA EXPEDITION ON A VESPA
IN PURSUIT OF THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

A JOURNEY OF NEARLY 4.5 THOUSAND MILES ON A SCOOTER, LEAVING FROM BANGKOK, TO GO TO THE 23rd WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE IN YAMAGUCHI, JAPAN, RAISING FUNDS FOR THE WORLD SCOUT FOUNDATION TO HELP CHILDREN IN POOR COUNTRIES

The protagonists are Leonardo C. Ocampo (a Scout Lead Explorer, the expedition organiser, who lives in Bangkok), Malenito (a teddy bear mascot dressed as a scout explorer) and a Vespa. Their next adventure, “Karuna Expedition”, in 2015, will take them from Bangkok through Laos, Vietnam, China, South Korea, to Yamaguchi, in Japan, for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree from 28 July to 2 August 2015. Nearly 5,000 miles to be ridden in 15 days (around 4,500 miles on the Vespa, 606 by boat), covering an average daily distance of 330 miles.

23rd WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE

The aim is to promote the basic principles of the world Scout Movement (whose slogan-mission is: “Creating a better world”). The values of scouting are: Respect, Belief, Care, Integrity & Cooperation, which are also the principles of the Karuna Expedition, to be promoted in the hope that they can be passed on to and developed by future generations.
The expedition has two other objectives: to raise funds – 1 dollar per kilometre on the Vespa, so at least 7,000 dollars – to be donated to the World Scout Foundation (to help less fortunate children in poor countries); and to beat the Guinness World Record.

THE VERSATILE FOUTA:
FROM THE HAMMAM TO THE BEACH

A fouta is a piece of cotton fabric intended to cover and dry the body in a hammam (or Turkish bath). Highly absorbent, it dries quickly and becomes softer after each wash.
Comfortable and versatile, the fouta can be used at home as a tablecloth, bedspread, chair cover or decorative item with its smart, simple design, or on the beach as a towel or sarong, or at a picnic. The fouta’s originality, stunning colours and practicality make it hard to resist. This is a go-everywhere, all-purpose accessory for the summer. And the Vespa griffe gives it that extra touch of style.

THE NEW ORLEANS
SCOOTER COOPERATIVE
AT AMERIVESPA

They call themselves “The New Orleans Scooter Cooperative” and they are a group of two-wheeler enthusiasts from Louisiana with a passion for vintage scooters: they help other people restore their scooters and keep them in perfect condition, and they have a predilection for the Vespa. They also organise rallies and meetings, and produce and distribute videos to share their experiences and offer useful advice. Their first video, produced two years ago – American Scooter Webisode 1 – recounts how “the scoot coop guys” successfully “resuscitated” a friend’s 1980 Vespa ET3 Primavera.
The community was formed by a group of participants at the great annual “Amerivespa” rally, an event organised by the Vespa Club of America at the beginning of summer for the last 22 years. The rally is an itinerant event held in different American states in rotation. In 2012, it was organised at Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, when 660 scooters paraded along the lakeside (a record for North America), mostly Vespas, as well as some Piaggio MP3 and Gilera Fuoco models.

AMERIVESPA 2012

For the lads from New Orleans, it was an event not to be missed. The video clip documents their participation at Amerivespa, capturing the rally atmosphere and, above all, their passion for the legendary Italian scooter.

AMERICAN SCOOTER

In 2013, the rally took place in San Diego, California, while the 2014 Amerivespa (from 12–15 June) was in New Orleans. So this year the scoot coop guys were on their home turf, with their trusty Vespas. Next year’s Amerivespa rally will be held in Indianapolis.

VESPA ANIMATION: A SPECIAL TOUR

Visitors to the official Vespa YouTube channel can watch an international selection of truly original animations and cartoons. Yet another demonstration of how the legendary Italian scooter fires people’s imagination and inspires creativity from generation to generation.
One of the most original clips, entitled “Vespa – A Special Tour”, is by Giacomo Salizzoni (a 40-year-old architect from Bologna, who is working in stop motion animation, commercials and advertising for 20 years). In just over two minutes, the video tells the story of the Vespa, tracing its development from an Italian phenomenon into a world icon. The posters from films starring the Vespa, beginning with “Roman Holiday”, and the best known advertising campaigns, come to life as the couple ride by on their Vespa, past famous places and locations, gradually building up a brightly coloured Vespa logo.
How is a clip like this made? The author has also posted a backstage video illustrating the work involved to produce the end result (and his passion for the Vespa). The animation was created almost ten years ago, but is as fresh today as it ever was!
MY VESPA MOVIE

SUMMER VESPA TRIP ITALY

A holiday in Italy, exploring beaches, lakes, cities, art, architecture and scenery, and not forgetting the country’s unique wine&gastronomic specialities. All you need is a Vespa, an adventurous spirit, a love of travel and having fun. With the Vespa, of course, you can go anywhere.
This must have been the thinking of young German Arndt Lindemann. A native of Karlsruhe, a large city in Baden-Württemberg, Arndt talked it over with a friend and once they had loaded their scooters with the bare minimum of luggage, they set off on a road tour, heading to Italy. Their journey took them through Fribourg, Lucerne, past Lake Maggiore, Milan, Genoa, La Spezia, Pisa; they stopped in Pontedera, the home of the Vespa, to admire the historic collections of the world’s most famous scooter in the Piaggio Museum. Then it was on to Florence and back up past Lake Garda to the Stelvio Pass and down to Davos, in Switzerland, before going on to Konstanz in Germany and home to Karlsruhe. A total of 1,500 miles for a holiday of 15 unforgettable days. With the Vespa.
