SEDUCTIVE AND UNCONVENTIONAL

THE TECHNOLOGICAL BANNER OF MOTO GUZZI MOTORCYCLES BOASTS A SUPERIOR EQUIPMENT PACKAGE, LUXURIOUS TRIMMINGS AND A FUTURISTIC AND BRAVE DESIGN THAT REMAINS ETCHED ON YOUR HEART.

Moto Guzzi MGX-21 - official video

The MGX-21 is the most unconventional, rich and technological of the 1400 cc grand cruisers built at Mandello del Lario. It is the latest distinguished representative of a line begun in 1921 when Moto Guzzi started building unique motorcycles, strictly assembled by hand, as unique collector's items.

Moto Guzzi is one of the greatest brands in the motorcycling world and in almost a century of history has produced motorcycles that are often ahead of their time, forging new ways forward subsequently adopted by everyone. From the racing track to the streets of the world, the company has not compromised its Italian soul. Backed by universally recognised values, Moto Guzzi can now express the influences and stimuli of motorcycle culture in an increasingly personal and exclusive style. The MGX-21 is the latest example of Moto Guzzi's originality and courage, a traditional part of its heritage.

The MGX-21 is dedicated to lovers of exclusive motorcycles, to people who know how to get excited even before they embark on a journey, simply by giving themselves over to the majesty that this prestigious Italian bike emanates, even from a standstill. The MGX-21 seems to invite you to fasten your helmet and set off, heading wherever the map takes you. This Moto Guzzi offers a different and unique way of looking at a bike trip: it is not just the body that is transported, but it is the rider's soul that is involved in a beautiful and emotional experience. It is the sensation of perfect harmony with a muscular looking motorcycle. It is the purest essence of the voyage itself, made up of adventure, freedom and discovery. The internal trembling and vibrations felt even before you climb on board, multiply when the90° V-twin engine starts up: from the banks of the Lario to the borders of the world, your journey moves to the rhythm of the strokes of the huge pistons of the Moto Guzzi big block.

Miguel Galluzzi, who heads the PADC (Piaggio Advanced Design Center) in Pasadena, California, describes the genesis of this new spectacular Moto Guzzi: “How do we imagine crossing an entire continent on a Moto Guzzi? This is the first question we asked and the immediate response was, on board a California 1400, a recently renewed classic. But we wanted to push beyond our thoughts and our dreams, to take a leap into the future. We dared imagine a different way of travelling, cooler, as the Americans would say. And we imagined that Moto Guzzi would design and build its own bagger. How could that be? How could a project like this steep itself in Italian design? So my thoughts turned to masters and masterpieces of our design: I think of Bertone, and his extraordinary Alfa Romeo BAT machines from the ’50s, when these mad Italians interpreted the American taste for extreme shapes and translated the wildest dreams into precious metal, masterfully combining Italian creativity with American pragmatism. And of course we thought about infinite spaces, with straight roads heading to distant horizons, to speed records snatched on the expanses of salt lakes, to travelling aimlessly and freely. In this way a blurred image started to take on a definite shape, and so the MGX-21 was born.

THE CRUISER STANDS OUT FOR ITS DESIGN, BUILD QUALITY AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL.

The cruiser stands out for its design, build quality and attention to detail
The immediately obvious aspect of its appearance is also wholly exceptional: the technical and stylistic features of the prototype, which had surprised everyone at its first presentation, have been kept totally intact. This is not a marginal detail, given that very important changes are usually made between a prototype version of a motorcycle and the final production model. Indeed, in the case of the MGX-21 a considerable detail has been added: MGX-21 has become a large touring bike, with a pair of rigid side panniers that in no way distort that purity of design the prototype boasted, integrating harmoniously in the style of the back end. The 58-litre carrying capacity and the presence of convenient, removable internal bags guarantee space and practicality for world travellers. The external pannier covers are in carbon: the deep reflections that come from the fibre are combined with “total black” graphics that make the MGX-21 the darkest and most attractive bike from Mandello. This is a bike dedicated to those who appreciate fine aesthetics, the stimulating touch of the surfaces when they are caressed and the alternating volumes and textures that delicately explore the sensibility of a design rich in content.

The design of the MGX-21 leaves little room for indifference and, like all Moto Guzzis, begins by showing of the engineering of the big 90° transverse V-twin engine with two large cylinders that seem to literally explode out of the petrol tank, helping to make the side view considerably lower and streamlined. The red paint of the aluminium head covers emphasises the power this engine is capable of expressing, even in its aesthetics. Low in the back and raised at the front, MGX-21 tells you from the first glance that it is capable of eating up the miles smoothly. It's certainly no wallflower, but rather seeks to attract people's attention with its original shape and the mysterious nocturnal appearance created by the PADC (Piaggio Advanced Design Center) designers in California who conceived its look. Particular attention was given to the study and definition of the “batwing” design, the large top fairing that makes an essential contribution to the bike's futuristic look. Form and function once again come together in perfect balance: the careful fluid dynamics analysis with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations and the numerous test sessions in the wind tunnel have led to achieving optimum air protection capacity, a quality that a bike destined for long trips must possess. The shapes at the back also stem from the same studies and they are enhanced by carbon profiles and the dual series of built-in LED lights.

To celebrate such a personal, powerful and brave style, Moto Guzzi gave the MGX-21 the evocative soubriquet of Flying Fortress. The Flying Fortress also stands out for meticulous and obsessive attention to detail: the spectacular headlight cluster uses LED DRL lighting technology, whereas the electrical controls on the handlebar are finished with metal shells. While respecting the solid century-old tradition, the MGX-21 reaches out to the future, employing materials typically used in the most advanced sports motorcycles. In fact, numerous parts are made of precious carbon, such as the front mudguard, the fuel tank panels, the side pannier covers and the engine cover. The new Moto Guzzi shows off a large 21" alloy front wheel, now protected by lenticular carbon covers with small openings where the spokes intersect with the channel. This stylistic choice also brings the technical advantage of increased stability and ease of handling due to the passage of air from one side of the hub to the other while the bike is in motion.

MOTO GUZZI’S TECHNOLOGICAL FLAG.

Moto Guzzi MGX-21 - on the road video

MGX-21 rises up as the Moto Guzzi technological banner. The new Italian cruiser boasts a complete electronics system package, which in accordance with the happy tradition Moto Guzzi, adopted with the California 1400, is included as standard equipment. It is a riding accessories package that makes travelling safer and more comfortable. The refined electronic engine management includes the “full Ride-by-Wire” electronic accelerator that manages 3 different engine maps, easily selected from the handlebar controls to adapt power and torque distribution in any situation:

  • VELOCE exploits all the available power and torque with an output that favours performance and response with every twist of the throttle. This is perfect for a dynamic ride and for getting the most of the chassis features for skilled riders;
  • TURISMO provides a smoother power distribution for smoother riding on a long trip;
  • PIOGGIA is the map suited for low grip conditions, decreasing the torque and engine brake management.

Moto Guzzi MGX-21 is also fitted with two-channel ABS and an advanced (and patented) traction control system that can be adjusted to three different settings (that can also be disabled). The new cruise control from Moto Guzzi with multiple features makes its début on the MGX-21: this system allows the rider to maintain the selected speed without touching the throttle, as well as increasing or decreasing cruising speed using a toggle button on the left-hand handlebar control. The speed can be temporarily increased by twisting the throttle; once released, the bike returns to the cruising speed. The system disengages automatically, not only by braking or pressing the selector switch, but also by twisting the throttle in the opposite direction. Once disengaged, you can return the bike to the last cruising speed set simply by pressing the “resume” button.

The top fairing hides a highly refined instrument cluster with a monochromatic, dot matrix display with a wealth of information, also including the fuel level and engaged gear indicator, clock, average and instantaneous fuel consumption and air temperature indicator. The MGX-21 dashboard also provides a complete entertainment system that includes the stereo system, equipped with an AM/FM radio with a 25W per channel amplifier connected to a pair of loudspeakers and it manages the intercom system. A Bluetooth module, that can host up to 5 devices, and the USB socket guarantee complete interaction with external devices, including a smartphone that can be used as a music player or to manage the multimedia platform, also included as standard equipment. MG-MP is the Moto Guzzi system that lets you connect your smartphone to the vehicle to transform it into an exceptional source of useful trip information. MG-MP is also able to handle telephone calls (answering and hanging up through the handlebar buttons) and it can use the smartphone's voice recognition features to place calls or activate a playlist. Therefore, a bike that supports the rider with cutting-edge technologies so he can tackle his trip with complete peace of mind and get the most possible enjoyment from the riding experience in full safety and control.

STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY FORM MAXIMUM RIDING PLEASURE.
The adoption of the 21" front wheel led to a major evolution of the frame that ensures high levels of comfort and riding pleasure. Moto Guzzi has developed a new steering geometry that ensures balance and ease of riding, admirably reconciling two qualities: the comfort and load capacity of a custom with the dynamism and performance of a cruiser. Also contributing to achieving this goal is the brand new (and patented) manoeuvring assistance system that reduces the tendency (connected to the size of the front wheel) of the steering to “close” in low speed and high steering angle manoeuvres, counterbalancing the weight of the steering, thanks to a system of regressive springs and particular kinematics.

Another aspect of the MGX-21 that was given particular attention is the riding position. The two high semi-handlebars that lean toward the rider, along with the forward footrests and a very comfortable seating position just 740 mm from the ground, ensure a dominating posture in the saddle that is comfortable and extended for the back. This way the rider has total vehicle control, both at a standstill and in motion. Luxurious and dark, the flagship of Mandello can comfortably seat a passenger or be enjoyed alone. In the case of the latter, the portion of the saddle dedicated to the pillion can be easily removed so you can travel like a solitary knight in perfect harmony with your mount. In place of the passenger saddle, you can install a carbon fibre cover or the top-case mounting bracket, both available in the rich Moto Guzzi accessories catalogue dedicated to the MGX-21.

The new, closed double cradle tubular frame structure, stiffened thanks to new, larger diameter tubes in the front section and reinforcing plates in the rear part, uses the ingenious elastic-kinematic engine mounting system developed by Moto Guzzi to eliminate the vibrations transmitted to the rider when rider. Nevertheless, at a standstill you will still feel those pulsations generated by the powerful action of the two 104 mm diameter pistons in the Moto Guzzi big block that excite even the most experienced biker, amplifying the “living” character of this motorcycle. The largest V-twin ever produced in Europe, which can deliver more than 120 Nm of torque with ease and precision from very low revs, has earned EU4 certification and a new exhaust unit with very long horizontal terminals. It is an ultra-modern power-plant, characterised by four valve per cylinder heads, driven by an overhead cam per bank through a system of rockers and rollers in order to reduce losses due to friction. The modern character of the engine is also demonstrated by dual ignition in order to guarantee perfect combustion, as well as by the double lambda sensor that creates a uniform mixture at the cylinders in any operating conditions, consequently improving consumption and harmful emissions. All this verve is controlled by a benchmark braking system for the category worthy of a sports motorcycle, comprising a trio of large diameter discs and four-piston front callipers and radial connection that is painted red to highlight the MGX-21's exhibitionist personality. The suspension system also boasts quality elements: the powerful fork with 45 mm diameter stanchions works with a pair of rear shock absorbers that have adjustable hydraulics in extension and spring preload through the convenient remote hydraulic preload.

MOTO GUZZI MGX-21
AMERICAN DEBUT IN SOUTH DAKOTA

THE FIRST PRESS LAUNCH IN THE USA, AT THE 76TH “STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY” IN EARLY AUGUST, WAS FOLLOWED BY THE PRESENTATION TO EUROPEAN JOURNALISTS IN SEPTEMBER, BEFORE THE “MOTO GUZZI OPEN HOUSE 2016”, WHICH CELEBRATED THE 95TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ITALIAN EAGLE BRAND.

“You’ll never do it”. This was many people’s reaction when Moto Guzzi presented the first prototype of the MGX-21 at EICMA 2014. Too big a gamble, too rich, too futuristic. Yet here it is, one of the most courageous and distinctive Moto Guzzi motorcycles ever to come out of the Mandello del Lario factory. It’s the Moto Guzzi bike you don’t expect: the model that more than any other demonstrates the ability of the Eagle to look forward to the future while keeping faith with its unique heritage. It may not be everyone’s favourite type of motorbike, but it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.

Moto Guzzi MGX-21 at Sturgis 2016

This is how Miguel Galluzzi (head of the Piaggio Group Advanced Design Center in Pasadena, USA) imagined Moto Guzzi crossing an entire continent, taking his inspiration from the forms of Bertone’s Alfa Romeo BAT cars of the 1950s to create a two-wheeler that blends Italian flair and design with the American taste for extremes. The MGX-21 combines a highly eye-catching image with significant substance: the basic platform is the California 1400, a motorbike offering outstanding ridability, not only on motorways, but on bends too, and equipped with the legendary transverse 90° V-twin engine made in Mandello. There are many excellent twin-cylinder engines, but only one transverse V-twin, made entirely in the same factory that has built every Moto Guzzi bike since 1921; the engine has more than 50 years of history behind it and has reached its third evolution, while its monumental structure, an integral part of the motorcycle design, is intact.

Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Still life & Action

The two red heads seem to leap out from the carbon-fibre cheeks of the MGX-21 fuel tank, conveying an impression of the bike’s performance potential at first sight. This is one of the added values of the new two-wheeler: it is the only bagger to offer chassis and engine performance levels usually associated with other categories. Knowing they had created a unique machine, Moto Guzzi decided to proudly present the MGX-21 in a venue where the custom bike culture, and the bagger culture in particular, is strongest and most deeply rooted: in the capital of motorcycling America, Sturgis (South Dakota), which every year at the beginning of August hosts one of the world’s largest and most important motorcycle rallies.

At the 76th edition of the “Sturgis Motorcycle Rally”, 700,000 people were expected to arrive in the small town, which, since 1938, transforms itself to welcome bikers from around the world. An incredible and unmissable showcase, where Moto Guzzi took centre stage. The public gave the MGX-21 a very warm welcome. A chorus of approval for the motorcycle and great respect for the brand, familiar to the majority of motorcyclists who stopped to admire the new Italian creation. The Sturgis rally is an unforgettable experience because it is a real motorcycling festival, irrespective of the brand you “wear”.

Sturgis is also the land of exaggeration and ostentation: the motorbikes the Sturgis crowd loves best are the largest and heaviest machines from the top American houses. Chrome rules supreme and very few bikes have such a dark nocturnal look as the MGX-21: another distinguishing element introduced by the new Moto Guzzi in its segment. The appearance of the mighty black two-wheeler attracted great interest, as if it were a real special, and its large 21” front wheel was also a source of curiosity. The wheel is a brave technical choice (only two baggers in the world feature it): such a large front wheel makes it very difficult to achieve a chassis with good dynamic qualities, delivering performance and fun in all riding conditions, not just on the straight.

The American press launch took place along a magnificent 300 km route out in the countryside offering a variety of riding situations to enable the reporters to test the chassis and engine capabilities of the MGX-21 to the full. After a good long ride, the American press lauded the MGX-21 as the “fastest bagger ever”, and were particularly impressed by its performance levels, normally not associated with a bagger. American bikers, or at least those who go to Sturgis, are very different to their European counterparts. None of them wear a helmet (it is not compulsory in South Dakota) but instead sport a classic bandana tied at the nape of the neck, the finishing touch to their outfit of leather jacket, jeans and pointed boots. They all ride very slowly. They enjoy keeping the bike at minimal revs, leaning only very slightly into bends even on roads that wind so much they are an invitation to experience an extra thrill. And this is where the MGX-21 made the difference.

EUROPEAN PRESS LAUNCH IN THE VALTELLINA. American reporters were not the only ones to be astonished by the dynamic capabilities of the new Moto Guzzi bike on bends: their colleagues who took part in the European launch at the beginning of September, with a test drive on the lovely roads of the Valtellina valley, behind Mandello del Lario (the homeland of Moto Guzzi and the venue for the 2016 Open House, which celebrated the brand’s 95th anniversary; see the next article in the Event section, ed.) were equally impressed. The custom bike culture is not as widespread in Europe as it is in America. The best-selling motorcycles on our market are much lighter, more powerful and dynamic.

The custom culture puts priority on qualities other than power and weight, such as the sensation the bike conveys to the onlooker even when stationary, the perception of the marque on the fuel tank with its history and tradition, the pull of the engine at low revs, accompanied by the beat of the large pistons, the comfort offered by the saddle. It’s a more emotional way to experience a motorbike, less influenced by superlative technical data. European journalists, too, are less familiar with this type of motorcycle, but nonetheless all of them appreciated the sporty side of the MGX-21, which enables the rider to handle winding roads at a surprising pace, without too many compromises for riding comfort on motorways.

THE “FLYING FORTRESS” AT STURGIS

A NEW PRODUCT SEGMENT, A NEW BIG MARKET FOR MOTO GUZZI. A SPECTACULAR ITALIAN MOTORCYCLE PROUDLY SHOWED OFF FOR 700 THOUSAND BIKERS FROM ALL OVER THE USA.

Sturgis, South Dakota (USA), 4 August 2016 – The first, long voyage of the most luxurious and spectacular Italian motorcycle ever designed reached its first destination at the legendary South Dakota event, directly in the deepest heartland of America. This brings Moto Guzzi into a new market segment, the large cruiser segment, with an offer that is completely new in design and cutting-edge technological content. The eagle brand's strategy is therefore structured on two fronts: on one side, the complete renewal of the range that already enjoys the success of the V7 and V9 ranges, and on the other, the entrance into new markets characterized by large volumes like the American market (the biggest in the world for cruiser motorcycles) that, with their strong motorcycle culture, recognize the value of the Italian brand.

The MGX-21 has had a long journey that began – as always for a Moto Guzzi – on the banks of the Lario, followed by the 2014 Milan show, when the first prototype astonished the world with its personality, innovative lines and technical solutions that had never before been imagined for a bike in this segment. Now, in its definitive form and ready for the market, the MGX-21 introduces itself, bolstered by its authenticity and blatant confidence, to the most demanding public in the world. And so an Italian bike bursts into the temple of the American motorcycle (an act bordering on blasphemy!) sure of its values, of almost one hundred years of history and a respect for the logo it displays on the fuel tank, recognized the world over.

There is no reverential fear as it comes through the main entrance to the 76th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally where at least 700 thousand bikers are expected this weekend from every State in the Union and from around the globe, a perfect stage for a bike that was born not to go unnoticed. This means that thousands of riders will be able to admire a bike up close and personally that comes from a far off land to speak, with new ideas and a new language, to the deepest depths of bikers' souls from every culture.

In fact, the Moto Guzzi MGX-21 is the most non-conventional, rich and technological of the 1400 cc cruisers built in Mandello del Lario. It is the tangible representation of Moto Guzzi's ability to make authentically unique motorcycles, strictly hand assembled as unique units since 1921. The MGX-21 is an example of personality and courage and it is dedicated to those who love exclusive motorcycles, to those who savour the excitement of the journey even before it begins, simply basking in the majesty of this Italian bike. The MGX-21 invites the rider to don a helmet and take off, placing a finger on the map at random. The excitement level increases even more when the 1400 cc 90° transversal V-twin engine rumbles to life. From Mandello del Lario to the edge of the world, the journey is marked by the rhythm of the enormous big block piston strokes and ridden in complete safety with the precision of the chassis characterized by the large 21” front wheel. Total control, on the other hand, is guaranteed by latest generation electronic riding support systems.

THE MOTO GUZZI CALIFORNIA
SHINES AT THE “COLUMBUS DAY”

THE MOTO GUZZI OF THE “REGGIMENTO CORAZZIERI”, WHICH IS THE HONOUR GUARD FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC, HAVE ENCHANTED THE PUBLIC CRUISING THE STREETS OF NEW YORK, IN FRONT OF MORE THAN 35 THOUSAND PEOPLE.

New York (USA), 10 October 2016 – The Italian motorcycle industry's pride and joy was present at the 2016 edition of the Columbus Day parade in Manhattan yesterday. Italy's Reggimento Corazzieri, the Honour Guard for the President of the Republic, joined in celebrating the discovery of the Americas (524th anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus), with celebrations dedicated to the “Italian heritage and pride”, as they made their way along the traditional route between 5th Street and Central Park.

The corps, one of the most prestigious in the Italian Armed Forces, led the parade riding their sumptuous Moto Guzzi California 1400 bikes.

It was an exceptional exhibition of the most “American” bike in the Moto Guzzi range; the California was specifically created for the Los Angeles Police Department, which had selected the Italian bikes to patrol California's highways in 1970. The modern California 1400 carries on the long-standing tradition as it continues to be used by the Cuirassiers.

Several historic Moto Guzzi bikes are on display at the “Maggiore Alessandro Negri di Sanfront” Barracks, a testament to the many years of service as the escort for the Italian President.

Ever since Moto Guzzi was founded in 1921, all of its bikes have been handmade at the historic plant in Mandello del Lario; the California is part of the proud tradition. And, as with all Moto Guzzi bikes, they are the perfect blend of history and tradition, a combination of the highest quality standards and the most advanced technology available, including the electronic controls that support the powerful 1400 cc two-cylinder engine, the largest "V-twin" ever produced in Europe.

HISTORY CURIOSITY: THE FIRST "WORLD MAP" WITH THE AMERICAS

It dates back to 1500 the first map of the globe that includes the Americas.

On 12 October 1492 the Italian navigator and explorer Christopher Columbus landed on American coasts, known today as San Salvador (a small island in the Bahamas district), thus discovering the “New World” and marking the watershed between the Middle Ages and modern history.

Portrait of Christopher Columbus (Sebastiano del Piombo, 1519).

His was a revolutionary enterprise that in a few years moved the economic and commercial center of gravity from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, changing forever the representation that then you had the world. In fact, outdated knowledge of medieval cartographers, mainly thanks to the notes of the Spanish and Portuguese travelers who explored first American lands and the Pacific, maps were redrawn, to represent the “new lands” and their boundaries.

The record attendance is demonstration of the second flush of youth being enjoyed by the Moto Guzzi brand thanks to the success of the policies implemented by the Piaggio Group to introduce new products – bikes, plus accessories and lifestyle – and to build up The Clan, the community of Guzzi fans, which, during the “big event”, registered hundreds of new members (see the article in the Community section, ed.).

Over the three-day mega-rally in Mandello, more than 700 test rides were taken on the bikes in the Moto Guzzi range, and fans had the opportunity to visit: the engine and vehicle assembly lines, which have been turning out Moto Guzzi motorcycles for world markets for 95 years; the Historic Museum, with its collection of more than 150 two-wheelers, from the original “Guzzi G.P.” to the MGS-01, not forgetting the first “Normale”; and the Wind Tunnel, widely admired as the first of its kind in the motorcycle industry, an elegant work of technological art from the 1950s.

But the true star of the event was the fabulous Moto Guzzi MGX-21, the most spectacular bike ever produced at Mandello, and a crowd-puller at the 76th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota at the beginning of August, the most important event of its kind in the world. The launch of the MGX-21, hailed by the American public as “the fastest bagger ever”, marks the start, also in product terms, of the five-year period that will lead to Moto Guzzi’s centenary in 2021.

The 2016 edition of the Moto Guzzi Open House, characterised by the friendship among Guzzi bikers from around the world, offered many attractions: visits to the factory and the museum, shopping for the exclusive merchandise in the Moto Guzzi range (clothing, accessories, lifestyle), live music at the Moto Guzzi Village, with DJ Ringo and the best special bikes from the “Lord of the Bikes” customiser contest; test rides along the enchanting roads overlooking Lake Como around Mandello, on Moto Guzzi two-wheelers from the California to the V9 Roamer and Bobber.

An added thrill was the presentation of a plaque to the two Guzzi bikers who were the first to buy the superlative MGX-21. See you back in Mandello in 2017.

THE FMI CELEBRATES MOTO GUZZI’S 95TH WITH AN AWARD FOR THE EAGLE BRAND AT MISANO

Davide Zanolini (left), Piaggio Group Marketing & Communication Director, receives the celebratory plaque from FMI president Paolo Sesti.

DAVIDE ZANOLINI: “MOTO GUZZI IS ENJOYING A “SECOND CHILDHOOD” AND MOTOR-RACING IS A WORLD WE HAVE NEVER STOPPED THINKING ABOUT.”

Misano Adriatico, 10 September 2016 – The MotoGP date with the San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix at Misano was the occasion for the presentation of a plaque by the Italian Motorcycle Federation (FMI) to celebrate the Moto Guzzi anniversary, “a benchmark of Italian mechanics for 95 years”. A special occasion in a setting that evokes the Eagle’s glorious sporting past (eight rider titles and seven manufacturer titles in the MotoGP world championship), in concomitance with the “Open House 2016” event. The plaque was received by Davide Zanolini, Piaggio Group Marketing & Communication Director, who thanked the FMI and said Moto Guzzi was experiencing a “second childhood”: “As we celebrate our 95th anniversary, we begin the five-year period that will take us up to the centenary of this great brand. We shall be introducing exceptional new products to a range that is giving us great satisfaction today, and presenting Moto Guzzi and motorcycling to a new generation of young fans. Moto Guzzi also boasts a formidable competitive past, an extraordinary legacy that has led us to consider a return to racing. Aprilia Racing is the spearhead of Piaggio Group technological research and there is nothing to prevent this technology being transferred, as it is to factory bikes, to the Moto Guzzi brand for a racing comeback. It may not happen immediately, but we are certainly not ruling out this fascinating possibility.”

“ESSENZA” DESIGN CONTEST:
PLAUDITS FOR THE MOTO GUZZI MGR 1200

THE SPECIAL BIKE DESIGNED BY RADICAL GUZZI WINS THE POPULAR VOTE IN THE CONTEST IN WHICH SIXTEEN MOTORBIKES COMPETED; VICTORIES IN THE SPEED RACES TOO: FIRST PLACE FOR MOTO GUZZI RIDER JOSEF LEITL IN THE FINAL RIDERS SCOREBOARD AND SECOND PLACE FOR THE MGR 1200 IN THE MANUFACTURERS SCOREBOARD.

Cologne, 9 October 2016 – In the second eighth-of-a-mile race, at the recent international motorcycle show INTERMOT 2016 (in Cologne), once again Moto Guzzi rider Josef Leitl “Lightning Sepp” displayed his nerves of steel. Josef came in second in both races (the first in Glemseck in September, see the article in The Best Video section; the second in Cologne), thus securing a second-place ranking in the final Manufacturers scoreboard for the Radical Guzzi Moto Guzzi MGR 1200. The Bavarian rider also took first place in the final Riders scoreboard in the two Essenza races.

Then came the crushing victory of the Moto Guzzi MGR 1200 in the popular vote of the exciting Essenza design contest (“The essence of motorcycles”) – in which 16 special bikes from leading manufacturers created by the best preparers competed – a superlative accolade for custom specialist Stefan Bronold and the entire German Radical Guzzi team, as well as for designer Kay Riemann of Himora, who created the winning MGR 1200 project, with the support of the Piaggio Group.

Stefan Bronold, Radical Guzzi customisation specialist: “We are immensely proud of these incredible results. Everyone who contributed to the success of the project has won today. The public vote is yet another demonstration of the great interest from today’s Moto Guzzi racing fans.”

(The actor Naga Chaitanya, guest star at the recent launch event of the new Motoplex of Hyderabad, India, posing on Aprilia RSV4 RF and, in the pictured below, on Moto Guzzi California).

12 MOTOPLEX STORES OPENED IN INDIA, VIETNAM, INDONESIA, CHINA, JAPAN AND PHILIPPINES IN PAST FEW MONTHS. NEW OUTLETS RAISE WORLDWIDE TOTAL TO 140 MOTOPLEX STORES OFFERING PIAGGIO, VESPA, APRILIA AND MOTO GUZZI VEHICLES.

Milan, 11 August 2016 – Over the past few days, the Piaggio Group has expanded its distribution network in India and Asia Pacific (APAC) with the opening of 12 new Motoplex outlets, the Group’s multibrand stores. Specifically, the Group has opened three main Motoplex stores in India, one in Hyderabad in the State of Telangana, one in the megalopolis Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, and one in the coastal city of Kochi in the State of Kerala, for a total surface area of more than 1,300 square metres.

Together with the flagship store that opened in Pune last November, the Indian outlets will offer the Vespa, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia brands; the Aprilia range will include the recently launched low-cost Aprilia SR 150 sports scooter, which joins the Group's premium offer on the Indian market and discloses the launch of new products.

The Piaggio Group has also opened three new Motoplex stores in Vietnam, two in Indonesia, one in Japan in the Tokyo area, two main stores in China (one in Nanking, the ancient Chinese capital, and one in Hangzhou, a city located at the mouth of the Qiantang river), and one in Manila, its first in the Philippines.

The Motoplex stores will together offer the prestigious Group brands (Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi) to create an innovative multibrand flagship store formula, in line with the new global in-store experience strategy the Piaggio Group is developing in key metropolitan areas around the world. Motoplex is a forward-looking store concept enabling dealers to offer a variety of brands and products in the same location and give customers an exciting overview of the two-wheeler world.

The new openings bring the number of Piaggio Group Motoplex stores to 140 worldwide, flanking the traditional dealer network and covering the markets in the EMEA region, the APAC region (including India) and the Americas, where important openings are planned by the end of the year, in South America in particular.

CHAKALL: THE CHEF WHO
RIDES A MOTO GUZZI V7

THE ARGENTINIAN CHEF HAS MADE HIS NAME WITH HIS TV COOKERY PROGRAMS. HE TRAVELS BETWEEN LISBON AND BERLIN, WHERE HIS RESTAURANTS ARE LOCATED. HIS COMPANION IN HIS EARLY CAREER WAS A PIAGGIO APE THREE-WHEELER, CONVERTED INTO A MOBILE KITCHEN. HIS COLOURFUL TURBANS INSTEAD OF A CHEF’S TOQUE ARE HIS TRADEMARK.

The Argentinian chef’s Moto Guzzi V7 outside his Lisbon restaurant “El Bulo”.

Born in Tigre, Argentina, over the last few years the 44-year-old Chakall (real name Eduardo Andrés Lopez) has made his name as a chef through popular TV programs, especially in Portugal, where he has a restaurant in Lisbon, “El Bulo Social Club by Chakall” (diners also enjoy performances by bands and tango dancers). He travels around the Portuguese capital on his Moto Guzzi V7 II (whose photo appears on his Facebook page). He also has a restaurant in China, and another in Berlin, Germany, “Sudaka by Chakall”, which specialises in South American cooking. He tells the story of the evening when celebrated tenor Placido Domingo ate there, and asked the chef to prepare an Argentinian speciality he loves: Chakall was happy to oblige and to show his appreciation the tenor stood up and began singing in the restaurant, to the great surprise of the other diners and the chef.

The cosmopolitan chef, whose wife and children often appear in his TV programs, was a great traveller as a young man; now he has homes in Berlin and Lisbon. His life has been dominated by his passion for cooking, which he inherited from his mother, a cook in a Buenos Aires restaurant. He writes successful books on new trends in South American and Portuguese food, which he combines with traditional dishes (some titles: “Grill & Chill”; “10 por 10”, tasty recipes that can be prepared in ten minutes and cost less than 10 euro); as a cookery book writer he has received recognition from the prestigious international “Gourmand World Cookbook Awards”; he holds courses and cookery demonstrations, often on the road with a Piaggio Ape converted into a travelling kitchen.

Mafra, Portugal: chef Chakall’s on the road cookery course, with a Piaggio Ape transformed into a “mobile kitchen”.

Apart from his Moto Guzzi bike, Chakall also has a special relationship with the cheerful Piaggio three-wheeler: when he began making his original TV programs, an Ape was his co-star, converted for the occasion into a travelling kitchen.

THE APRILIA MOTOGP PROJECT KEEPS ON GROWING

THE TOP 10 HAS BECOME A HAPPY HABIT AS THE RS-GP PREPARES FOR A GREAT SEASON FINALE.

The Aprilia project continues to show encouraging signs of growth in its rookie year in the MotoGP world championship. Having “sampled” the top 10 on a number of occasions, the RS-GP is beginning to be a constant presence in the top places of the scoreboard. All thanks to the continuous development work of the Italian mechanics, especially as regards performance in the qualifying sessions. While the pace of riders Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl in race configuration has always been important, the Q2 secured at Misano, Aragon and Motegi (where two Aprilia bikes could have qualified) helped improve the final position.

RB Ring Spielberg, Austria. A first important indication came in Austria, the tenth GP of the season. Both penalised by an early start, Alvaro and Stefan had to do a ride-through in the initial phases that compromised the outcome of the race. Incorrect communication on the RS-GP bikes' instrument panels also led the German rider to make another pit stop. Based on performance in warm-up and, above all, the pace demonstrated after the ride-through, the RS-GP machines had the potential to achieve the best performance of the season on the Red Bull Ring. Bautista, who lapped at a consistent top-ten pace, finished sixteenth in the end, in any case on the threshold of the points zone, whereas Bradl was a bit farther back in nineteenth place.

Brno, Czech Republic. The weather had a strong impact on race Sunday at Brno, the 11th of the season. The heavy rainfall in the morning stopped a few minutes before the MotoGP start, forcing the riders to start in rain configuration, but with the possibility of a bike change during the race. After the warm-up, the sensations in the Aprilia camp were good, as Alvaro Bautista's eleventh best time and Stefan Bradl's good pace demonstrated. With the track drying out and intermediate conditions, however, the Aprilia riders were unable to find the right feeling. Even so, Stefan Bradl was back in the points at the chequered flag, thanks to his 14th-place finish, whereas Alvaro Bautista (who also made a pit stop to change bikes, going back out with intermediate tyres) had to settle for sixteenth place.

Silverstone, Great Britain. The next race, at Britain’s Silverstone circuit, had a red flag straight away in the first lap due to an accident involving Baz and Pol Espargaró. Following the quick start procedure, hostilities resumed with race distance reduced to 19 laps.

Both Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl got off to a good start when the lights went out, vying for an important placement with a good, consistent pace. However, as he engaged battle with his rivals, Stefan was the innocent victim of contact that led to a fall, forcing him to retire.

Bautista continued his progress, battling at length with Hernandez and managing to build up a comfortable gap after overtaking him. Managing his tyre wear well, the Spanish Aprilia Racing Team Gresini rider demonstrated very consistent performance, moving into tenth place under the chequered flag.

Misano, Italy. The home GP at Misano, in mid-September, was an important performance. Alvaro Bautista's tenth place in the race and Stefan Bradl's twelfth demonstrated the progress that the Aprilia RS-GP machines showed throughout the weekend. The many changes tested in previous weeks and brought to the race at Misano gave the Aprilia Racing Team Gresini riders a positive approach from the very first sessions. Bautista going through to Q2 – the first time for the fledgling RS-GP – and Bradl's excellent fifth-row spot on the grid were the prelude to an extremely solid race for both riders.

Alvaro started well from the fourth row, but contact with another rider in the second lap cost him a few positions, precluding any chance of an even better final result. After closing the gap behind the rider ahead of him, he battled with teammate Stefan and with Petrucci, then pulled away with a consistent pace that allowed him to easily defend a significant tenth-place finish. Bradl also rode a very solid race, finishing twelfth.

Aragón, Spain. Aprilia’s positive trend was confirmed once again under the chequered flag at Aragón in Spain, the 14th race of the season. The RS-GP machines ridden by Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl finished respectively in ninth and tenth place, with a gap behind the leader of just over 20 seconds for the Spaniard (23.071 for Bautista, 27.898 for Bradl). This was a result Aprilia had been building towards throughout the championship, developing the bike for its rookie season even during the races.

The race, where Bradl started from the twelfth spot on the grid and Alvaro from the fourteenth, began well straight away for the Aprilia Racing Team Gresini riders, who moved up through the ranks in the early phases. In the subsequent laps, Bautista and Bradl established their pace, both skilfully maintaining interesting times while their direct rivals showed an increasingly marked drop in performance. During the seventh lap, Alvaro overtook his teammate, proceeding to hunt down the Pol Espargaró and Andrea Dovizioso duo. He engaged in a heated battle with the rider from Forlì, coming out on top and moving into a nice ninth place. Behind him, Stefan Bradl continued his progress, finishing the race in tenth place.

Motegi, Japan. In the race that decided the 2016 World Championship, at Japan’s Motegi circuit in mid-October, Aprilia had plenty to be happy about. Alvaro Bautista, fast and precise for all 23 laps, took a good seventh place (his best result of the season), 23 seconds from the leader. Tenth place for Stefan Bradl after a small mistake in the finale kept him from making a go for ninth and eighth place. Overall, the Japanese weekend confirmed the Italian team's excellent form. Fast in qualifying and consistent in the race, the season finale promises to be positive for both Aprilia Racing Team Gresini riders.

Alvaro Bautista got off the line well when the lights went out from his twelfth spot on the grid, overtaking Redding and Petrucci. From the tenth lap, Alvaro kept the gap behind Pol Espargaró constant without making any mistakes and consistently lapping at 1'47. When the chequered flag came out, the gap behind the winner, Marquez, was 23 seconds, whereas the gap behind the fifth-place finisher was reduced to 8 seconds. Stefan Bradl also had a good race, skilfully recovering after a less than perfect start and coming back to take tenth place. The German had the potential for a better placement, but a mistake in the penultimate lap made him lose contact with eighth and ninth place, positions that had been within his grasp up to that point.

APRILIA RSV4 MACHINES ON THE TRACK NEXT YEAR IN WORLD SBK WITH MILWAUKEE APRILIA RACING TEAM

Lorenzo Salvadori, 2015 World Superstock 1000 Champion, riding an Aprilia RSV4 (archive photo).

THE BIKES WILL BE RIDDEN BY ITALIAN LORENZO SAVADORI AND NORTHERN IRISHMAN EUGENE LAVERTY IN THE RACES.

Two Aprilia RSV4 bikes will be on the track in the 2017 World Superbike Championship with the Milwaukee Aprilia Racing Team colours. This is a two-year contract, so it will also be valid for 2018. The agreement specifies that technical material and related direct assistance and support will be provided by Aprilia Racing, including bike development, which classifies Milwaukee as a Supported Factory Team.

This means that Aprilia Racing - the Piaggio Group racing department and technological point of excellence in the Italian motorcycle industry - is confirming its high level presence in the premier competition for factory derivative bikes, alongside its important efforts in MotoGP.

Aprilia Racing - MotoGP 2016

The goal is to compete at top levels in World SBK in order to emphasize the competitiveness of the Aprilia RSV4, capable of taking no less than seven World Titles (three Rider and four Manufacturer) between 2010 and 2014, proving to be the most victorious bike in recent WSBK history. The result of a project intended to create a true racing bike that any enthusiast could have, the RSV4 astonished from its rookie season, winning a race in its maiden year and then racking up repeated championship wins in both the Manufacturer and Rider competitions (twice with Max Biaggi and once with Sylvain Guintoli).

All this while the street version – obviously also characterized by an exclusive narrow 1.0 litre V4 – continued to win comparative reviews year after year with the best competitors in the world, both European and Japanese.

Aprilia RSV4 RF presented at the recent Intermot exhibition in Cologne.

The team run by Shaun Muir, which boasts two British titles, will be able to count on a top shelf rider lineup: in addition to the 2015 Superstock Champion Lorenzo Savadori, who quickly drew attention this year in his rookie World Superbike season, Northern Irishman Eugene Laverty will be back in WSBK, 2013 runner up astride none other than an Aprilia RSV4.
Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing Manager: “Shaun Muir's team, after making a good name for themselves in the British championship, wants to get to the top of a world category. Our agreement includes, in addition to providing bikes and materials, support from Aprilia Racing personnel to manage and develop the RSV4, within a Factory Support type relationship.

The birth of the Milwaukee Aprilia Racing Team also marks Eugene Laverty's return to WSBK, a rider who we know well and whose professional and personal qualities have our utmost respect. He will have Lorenzo Savadori working alongside him, a young rider who has been part of our sports project for two seasons in which he won the Superstock 1000 title first and then drew attention in WSBK with an extremely positive rookie year”.
Shaun Muir, SMR General Manager: “For SMR, collaboration with Aprilia Racing for 2017 and 2018 means a real chance to fight for the win. Aprilia has a strong and victorious history in World Superbike and we are determined to continue on the same path. Having Eugene and Lorenzo on board makes this a dream team.

Without a doubt, Eugene is coming back to WSBK for one reason only - to win. Lorenzo, on the other hand, is the fastest rookie and a sure protagonist. I wish to thank Milwaukee, Gulf and all of the partners who are supporting our project.”
Eugene Laverty, rider: “I'm excited to return to Superbike with Aprilia and the RSV4, a bike with which I took ten wins and second place overall in the championship.

Eugene Laverty with Aprilia RSV4 (archive photo).

I hope to be able to pick up where I left off with those results, thanks to the support of Aprilia and a fantastic team like Shaun Muir's. Everything is in place for us to be competitive straight away.”
Lorenzo Savadori, rider:
“I am very happy to continue my adventure in World Superbike with Aprilia. This is another chance to achieve great results, with one more year of experience on the RSV4 for me.

In a demanding rookie season I was already able to express a good performance level, learning a lot, both about race management and working in the garage, but I do not want to stop here. We will definitely be highly motivated at the start, with an ambitious project and a great desire to do well.”
Jason Chiswell, Vice President of Marketing Milwaukee Tools: “At Milwaukee Power tools our vision is always to win and that same mentality is shared with the SMR team. We see the next year with Aprilia as being an exciting and a new winning chapter in our World Superbike program.” Frank Rutten, Vice President of Gulf Oil International: “As the world’s fastest growing oil brand we are very excited by the prospect of moving forwards with what we believe will be one of the most rapid teams in SBK next year. We have been extremely impressed by the way SMR has entered the World Superbike arena. They are one of the best organized and most professional outfits in the paddock and we have developed an excellent working relationship with both them and the team’s title sponsor, Milwaukee Tools.
We are very excited by the prospect of moving forwards with them as team sponsor and official lubricant partners.”

THE 2016 SEASON

RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SWEDEN:
COUNT THE APRILIA BIKES!

Robert Färestal on the RSV4 F 16 competes in the Superbike Championship in Sweden.

The news from the Piaggio Group importer in Sweden makes you realise how much passion there is for Aprilia around the world. Björn Linde of Svenska Piaggiogruppen tells us that enthusiasm for the Italian brand is growing: “In the 2016 racing season here in Sweden, there were 5 Aprilia bikes in the main Superbike category, 2 in the Rookie 1000, 3 in the Speedster; and all these classes are part of the official national Swedish championship. There was another Aprilia bike in the B.O.T.T. category (with two others joining in the last races of the season), and 4-6 more Aprilia racers in the heats for the Swedish Endurance cup. Altogether, we saw 16-18 Aprilias on Sweden’s racetracks this year, whereas until two or three years ago, you never saw any in racing competitions in which the world’s leading manufacturers compete; so a great change is taking place… and we’re delighted!”.

For the record, the SBK 2016 riders on Aprilia bikes in Sweden are: Richard Haggren, Daniel Alstergren on the RSV4 1000 RF, Robert Färestal on the RSV4 F16, Jan-Owe Bengtsson and Henry Sundkvist.

The Aprilia riders in the “Rookie 1000” category are Sebastian Carlström and Johan Fäith. In the Speedster class, Aprilia racers are Kenneth Lysell on an RSV4, Kjell Larsson on an RSV Mille R (photo below) and Jonas Sjölander on an RSV4.

ANNIVERSARY
MOTO GUZZI STORY 1921-2016

THE EAGLE BRAND: AN ARISTOCRAT
OF WORLD MOTORCYCLING FOR 95 YEARS

FROM THE NEW V7 II RANGE TO THE “FLYING FORTRESS” MGX-21 LAUNCHED IN STURGIS, SOUTH DAKOTA (THIRD AND LAST EPISODE).

Even in the first six months of 2013 Moto Guzzi continued his extraordinary progression, marking an 11.2% increase compared to the first half of previous year. In May 2013 Robb Report, the American magazine that has been the International authority and reference point in the luxury segment for almost forty years, listed the big Custom made in Italy at Mandello del Lario among its Best of the Best Luxury Portfolio for 2013.

After receiving unanimous approval all over the world, Moto Guzzi California 1400 adds further important recognition from the United States, taking first place - in August 2013 - in the Cycle World competition's Cruiser category.
This recognition takes on that much more significance because it comes from the most authoritative magazine from the other side of the ocean, a true reference point for enthusiasts all over the world, and because precisely the American market is the cradle of large Cruiser bikes, the true flagships of the road, which is teeming with the strong presence of American brands.

In 2014 the revamping of the "small" V7: born the V7 II. The second generation of the Moto Guzzi V7 keeps the stylistic personality of its predecessor intact: a design that dialogues between Moto Guzzi shapes from the past combined with the needs of a modern bike capable of satisfying the widest possible range of enthusiasts.

At the same time, Moto Guzzi V7 II is a completely new bike in terms of technology, powertrain, ergonomics, safety, construction quality and finish and riding pleasure. The sixth gear, ABS braking system and Traction Control are among the most important innovations of the new model.

MOTO GUZZI V7 II AND EWAN MCGREGOR – 2015 OFFICIAL VIDEO

The new V7 II generation comes in three versions: Eclectic and essential, the V7 II Stone now has new colours all satin finishes and inspired by typical ‘70s colour schemes that enhance the contrast of the new frame, built with more aesthetic welding where brilliant paintwork has been applied to enhance the ingenious architecture.

V7 II Special is the one that most approaches the original spirit of its ancestor, beginning from its graphics, inspired by the famous 1975 V750 S3.

Manufactured in limited edition as the celebratory plate located on the upper steering yoke indicates, the V7 II Racer confirms the previous model's equipment and features when the total-black look was introduced on the side panels, mirrors, silencer brackets and footpeg guards in contrast with the bright 22 litre chromium fuel tank.

In 2015 Moto Guzzi introduces two and exciting motocycles powered by the spectacular 1.4 litre V Twin: Eldorado and Audace.

The new Eldorado is a luxurious motorcycle on the cutting-edge of technology which, powered by the largest V Twin ever manufactured in Europe, is a perfect interpretation of the most genuine Guzzi spirit. The new Eldorado is a true flagship in the bike world, embodying a splendid tradition in an increasingly solid present. And it does so looking decidedly to the future: chromium inserts and finely crafted details combine with LED lights and come together in classic lines that bring Moto Guzzi into a new dimension where refinement speaks Italian.

The Moto Guzzi Audace states its rebel spirit immediately simply with its name. It is a musclebike designed to enhance the spectacular performance of the 1400 cc "Made in Mandello" big block. Nothing more than pure riding pleasure led the development of a model where the best available technology is at the service of performance and which has a look with a strong personality, a carbon look which takes on that dark soul and reconfirmed with the elements of the Dark Rider personalisation.

Customisation is a labour of love on your bike and Moto Guzzi in 2015 has fine-tuned a complete line for enthusiasts, Moto Guzzi Garage, that also includes four kits inspired by the history of the Eagle brand in line with the most modern trends. These are special pieces and parts that Moto Guzzi has arranged, creating four styles and just as many distinct riding experiences: Dark Rider, Scrambler, Legend and Dapper.

These styles are added in 2016 Lady Guzzi (dedicated to women), Alce and Clubber that recall the legendary Café Racer '60s.
2016 opens up with the commercial launch of Moto Guzzi Stornello, a “light offroad” version of the V7II range, presented in preview at the exhibition Eicma 2015 in Milan.

More than fifty years after its birth, one of the best known and most successful names ever hung on a motorcycle produced by Moto Guzzi is back, synonym of construction quality, versatility and inimitable style. The new stornello stands out with its numerous prestigious Italian made parts and the dedicated selection of colour schemes which enhance its charm and elegance. Available in a limited and numbered edition, the V7II Stornello is the latest representative of Moto Guzzi's exclusive ability to create true factory specials.
In March 2016, coinciding with the 95th anniversary of Moto Guzzi, the V9 arrives, a new medium engine capacity custom that is introduced in two versions with two distinct personalities.

The more classic is called the V9 Roamer, whereas the V9 Bobber represents the darker and more sporty Moto Guzzi soul and it stands out with its essential total black look and the large tyres on its 16 inch wheels.

The two new Moto Guzzis are characterised by their exceptional construction quality and painstakingly crafted details. The overall reduced sizes make riding and control at a stand still easy, also assisted by the overall weight which is contained to under 200 kg. Such a solid, lightweight and fun chassis is combined with a V90 transversal 850cc twin-cylinder engine, completely new and designed to maximise elasticity and toque in order to guarantee character, easy handling and a quick response even at low rpms. The full compliment of factory equipment includes ABS, adjustable traction control that can also be disabled, immobilizer and a USB port.

The “big” news for 2016 is the definitive MGX-21 “Flying Fortress”. After the preview at the international exhibitions, during this summer was held the debut on the road for a truly special and unique model, large with a courageous design, ostentatious and definitely not one to leave onlookers indifferent, as its name would suggest. The new and magnificent bagger from Mandello del Lario maintains the spectacular 21” alloy front wheel protected by carbon coverings and it is characterised by the high level of technical content, several of which are patented, which make it the Moto Guzzi technological flagship. MGX-21 Flying Fortress is powered by the largest V-twin ever manufactured in Europe, the Moto Guzzi 1400cc with cardan final drive. It has a new exhaust with extra-long silencers that stretch out on a strictly horizontal line.

The construction craftsmanship and the quality of the components selected for this model are also exceptional, including numerous parts in carbon and the luxurious and ultra-complete instrumentation that incorporates a true entertainment system. The equipment is completed by all of the most advanced safety devices such as ABS, adjustable traction control (which can also be disabled), the Ride-by-Wire accelerator and cruise control. (See articles regarding the new MGX-21 in the Product, Accessories and Event columns).

Slab City is a sort of campsite in south-east California, a few miles from the Salton Sea. Its origins date back to a military base located there in the 1950s. When the base closed, the first campers arrived and with them the first groups of nomads, hippies and people wanting to escape civilisation. While its population was highest in the 1980s, for some months of the year Slab City is still the choice of camper vans and caravans of tourists looking for an alternative lifestyle.

The Salton Sea, a home to pelicans.

Over the years, the Slab City community has become a village, despite a lack of electricity, running water and other amenities. Its residents power their mobile homes with generators and solar panels.

In the desert around Slab City is the colourful “Salvation Mountain”, a small artificial mountain covered with decorations in acrylic paint, symbols and verses from the Bible. The mountain was created by visionary artist Leonard Knight (Vermont, 1931 –San Diego County, 2014), who lived at the foot of his creation for many years.

Slab City is mentioned in the best-seller “Into the Wild”, by American writer Jon Krakauer (published 20 years ago), adapted into the 2007 film “Into the Wild” directed by Sean Penn, in which the residents of the campsite took part.

In 2008, Italo-American multi award-winning director Gianfranco Rosi (Golden Bear at the 2016 Berlin Film Festive with “Fire at Sea” and in the running for an Oscar 2017 nomination) shot his first documentary, “Below Sea Level”, entirely at Slab City.

The “Ultimate Summer Drive” (USD) is the “formula” that ranks Europe’s best roads. The scoreboard was drawn up after processing the results of an online survey, to which 14,000 riders and drivers from different countries replied, with the USD equation devised by psychologist David Holmes, and combining them with the findings of a European survey commissioned by TomTom from Censuswide in May 2016. Holmes analysed a series of characteristics of the routes, for example, hilly areas, surrounding scenery, stopping points, type of road (incline, surface condition, number of bends), traffic levels.
In the final ranking of Europe’s 25 best roads, three are in Italy. The scoreboard is of interest not only to drivers, but also to fans of two-wheelers, motorbikes or scooters, as a source of travel ideas. Here the best 25 roads in Europe, subdivided by category:

“THE CLAN” MOTO GUZZI
AT THE MANDELLO OPEN HOUSE

The Moto Guzzi Open House in Mandello del Lario, where the eagle brand celebrated its 95th anniversary in September, was a wonderful party. And it was made even more special for Guzzi bikers who belong to the “The Clan” community. A series of special initiatives and amenities were organised specifically for them, to make the open house a truly unforgettable experience.

Beginning with the special parking area, with access for people displaying The Clan membership card, and continuing with a welcome kit for existing members and for everyone who registered for membership during the open house by presenting their Moto Guzzi handbook.

Then there were special “fast lanes” for bikers wanting to visit the Moto Guzzi Museum and test ride the range; 80 Guzzi Clan members also had the opportunity for a free check-up on their bikes by Moto Guzzi mechanics, directly in the workshop of the Mandello factory.

The cherry on the cake was an “experience” for the community members: their photo against the background of the images of the communication campaign for the stunning new MGX-21. And thanks to an instant-win mechanism, 40 of them won a test ride on the powerful Moto Guzzi cruiser.

So, what are you waiting for Guzzi bikers? Join “The Clan”, the community where true bikers share their passion for the eagle brand. Members receive newsletters and enjoy benefits and exclusive initiatives.

After the Open House in Mandello, community fans met up at the INTERMOT 2016 motor show in Cologne, at the beginning of October: they were offered test rides on the main models in the Moto Guzzi range in the special outdoor area, and a welcome gift at The Clan desk on the Moto Guzzi stand.

Astride his powerful Moto Guzzi MGR 1200, customised by Germany’s Radical Guzzi garage, rider Josef Leitl “Lightning Sepp” hadn’t given his rivals an inch of leeway through to the fiercely fought semi-final. MY BIKE MOVIE

“APRILIA TUONO V4 1100 FACTORY:
AN INCREDIBLE BIKE”

On the web, he’s known as “Royal Jordanian” and people go crazy for his motorcycle videos. His clip on the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory – a road ride with final comments – has collected more than 200,000 views. The video was shot “on board” with the distinctive sound of the engine. At the end, RJ expresses his appreciation for the V4 engine “the soul of the bike… the best-sounding bike with a standard exhaust”; and “it’s just magnificent, one of the most impressive test rides on my channel… I love it… an incredible bike”.

Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory - Short ride and thoughts

Royal Jordanian (London, UK) is online with his web site and social channels, where he posts videos, photos, travel stories, comments and comparisons of various bike models, swapping views with other bikers and also recording what he sees as he rides through the city traffic. RJ is a popular biker, and a true devotee: “Riding a bike is my relief, my medicine, in this crazy world,” he writes. His favourite bike is a “naked” 900cc, but there’s no doubt he was struck by the unmistakeable sound of the Aprilia Tuono’s V4: it’s pure adrenaline. We dedicate this video to biker RJ:
