THE HUGE FESTIVAL – FROM 21 SEPTEMBER TO 1 OCTOBER – CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DESIGN SINGAPORE COUNCIL. THEME FOR THIS EDITION: “BETTER BY DESIGN”
September 2023 (G.T.) - Following its successful return last year, the most important Asian all-around design event returns: “Singapore Design Week 2023” (SDW 2023), which will be held from 21 September through 1 October. Organised by the Design Singapore Council (Dsg), the 11-day festival will present an extraordinary showcase of Singapore’s distinctive brand of creativity while celebrating Dsg’s 20th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, SDW 2023 will adopt Dsg’s motto “Better by Design” as the festival theme for this special edition.

Design Districts. This year, SDW will also introduce Design Districts as a key highlight of the festival. Each district will reflect the unique character and charm of its community and offer a wealth of immersive design experiences within walking distance.

To kick off this new festival offering, SDW 2023 Design Districts will span three key precincts – Bras Basah.Bugis, Marina Bay, and Orchard Road.

Festival Pillars. Building on the festival’s distinctive and enduring vision, SDW 2023 will continue to explore design through the three defining pillars of Design Futures, Design Futures, Design Marketplace, and Design Impact. Inspired by the festival theme and pillars, the local Design Community will also be presenting over 80 ground-up events ranging from exhibitions, talks and panel discussions to workshops, tours and retail pop ups. And, in occasion of FIND Design Fair Asia (it’s the second edition of the show which aims to make the creativity of the Italian companies known to the Asian design market), during SWD 2023, a new feature is the “Italia Geniale” installation, a collection created by ADI - Association for Industrial Design of Milan with ADI Design Museum Compasso d’Oro ( www.adi-design.org/homepage.html). The initiative is the fruit of the collaboration of the Italian Embassy in Singapore with the support of the Italian Trade Agency and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the spectacular setting of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, the exhibit showcases the most significant materials, objects, and products of the icons of Italian design which speak of imagination, labour, wellness, and interpersonal relationships. Presented as a sneak peek at Dubai EXPO 2020, “Italia Geniale” takes visitors on a journey through the history and masterpieces of Italian industrial design, and also recounts the wealth of Italian brands and patents. On display are over 80 iconic objects of Italian design, many of which winners of the prestigious Compasso d'Oro Award – such as Vespa Elettrica – a tribute to the excellence, creativity, and labour of Italian companies. “Italia geniale – Design Enables” is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Cooperation and by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, in agreement with ADI, Unioncamere, and Ice Agency.
