VESPA FEATURES IN THE “ITALIA GENIALE” EXHIBITION THAT ACCOMPANIES THE AMERIGO VESPUCCI WORLD TOUR

The Vespa Primavera Elettrica, in the Verde Amabile livery colours (photo by Massimo Sestini), is just one of the examples of Italian excellence that features in the “ITALIA GENIALE” exhibition, in the Italy Village that is accompanying the world tour of the sailing ship Vespucci (photo: press office, Italian Embassy in Tokyo), from Los Angeles (July) to Tokyo (August); the next stops are scheduled in Darwin, Singapore, Mumbai, Abu-Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Durazzo.

August 2024 (G.T.) – “Tokyo. Twenty-first port. Seventeenth country. Fourth continent of the Vespucci Tour”. This is how the Vespucci Tour social media channels announced that the Italian ship had docked in Japan on 24 August.

And at the International Cruise Terminal in Tokyo, the Italy Village has also been inaugurated (with a full programme of events and initiatives), playing host to the travelling “ITALIA GENIALE” exhibition, unveiled for the first time in July at the previous stop on the tour in Los Angeles by Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini, Ministry for Enterprises and Made in Italy.

ITALIA GENIALE. design enables - Beauty, originality and creativity in industrial design, appreciated universally” is the exhibition put on by the Ministry for Enterprises and Made in Italy and the Ministry of Defence, in partnership with the ADI Design Museum, to celebrate the world tour of the Amerigo Vespucci ship. Italia Geniale – explained Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini is a synthesis of the talent, creativity and technology of Italy. It represents the best way to present our Made in Italy sector to the world: a sector that is never static, but rather is characterized by continuous excellence in research, combining innovation with tradition. A superb opportunity to present our country, with a view to making it increasingly attractive.

The exhibition is an extraordinary opportunity for global dialogue”, commented ADI President Luciano Galimberti; “it is a journey through the technological developments and the relational capacity that typifies Italian design: a journey that metaphorically accompanies the voyage of the Vespucci ship, to promote the manufacturing excellence of our country.”

Italia Geniale is an exhibition format that has been consolidated over time, but which is constantly evolving: it was inaugurated for the first time at the Dubai Expo in 2021, and then brought to Palazzo Piacentini in Rome, home of MIMIT (Ministry for Enterprises and Made in Italy) in 2022. It has been on the road since 2023, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for diplomatic representation as ambassadors of the Made in Italy sector.

This version of the exhibition - which has been specifically designed to accompany the Vespucci world tour - features images, materials and iconic products of the Italian system that express the imagination, work, well-being and relationships between people that characterize it. At its core, the exhibition appreciates and celebrates the heritage of our country's brands and patents, touching on both material and technical culture, as well as incorporating the history of design. Curated by Carlo Martino and Francesco Zurlo, the visual identity of the exhibition was designed by the SM5 studio, which also curated the set-up of the space, and it was created in collaboration with companies, institutions, historical archives, museums, designers and private collectors.

The exhibition essentially serves to highlight the way in which the design and creativity of our country improve the lives of people all over the world, enabling them to achieve fulfilment thanks to the everyday objects that have now become icons, ambassadors of Made in Italy everywhere. For the curators, design is a means to enhance and legitimize the skills of the individual: this concept represents the starting point of the research, and is also expressed in the subtitle of the exhibition: Design enables.
The exhibition is divided into five thematic areas within which the objects are arranged in sections (with around eighty Italian companies represented): Imagin-able: imagine, create new worlds, invent stories and make these as part of our identity. Work-able: objects that are functional as well as beautiful, products, services and systems that promote work-related activities. Relation-able: items that support or establish relationships between people. Live-able: objects linked to physical and mental integrity, with the theme of care for oneself and others at their heart. Move-able: objects that promote freedom of movement in a sustainable way, with respect for oneself, others and the environment. Like Vespa, a global icon of mobility since 1946, which has proved that it can evolve over time.
