January 2026 (G.T.) – He promised he’d do it, and he did: the ‘I Due Caschi’ (The Two Helmets) project announced last December by its protagonist Mario Gabrieli, an Italian from Trieste who moved to Australia, is now underway: “In January 2026, I will set off with my 11-year-old son Leonardo on an extraordinary journey: from Sydney to Trieste on a 1976 Vespa Primavera ET3, across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, China, Central Asia, Turkey, the Balkans and finally Italy. Our project is called I Due Caschi - it is the tale of a father-son journey, but it’s also an educational, cultural and deeply human experience, entirely on the back of a Vespa. We will document our voyage with videos, photographs and Leonardo's illustrated diary, which will narrate the world from his perspective. I really think that the I Due Caschi project will have a significant narrative and emotional value for the international audience of Vespa fans, bringing together heritage, discovery and bonds that span generations, as we travel slowly on my Vespa, which will be 50 years old this year.”
This is the vehicle he has chosen for this great father-son adventure: indeed, Mario Gabrieli is a true Vespa fan, and owns a number of models. “Yes, Vespa has been with me my entire life”, he comments. A passion that he has passed down to young son Leonardo.

Latest news. On 20 December 2025, Mario confirmed their imminent departure: “The Vespa Primavera ET3 has been loaded onto a container in Sydney and is set to arrive in Indonesia in mid-January, where our journey by land will officially begin. Our goal is to share the adventure, meet lots of people along the way and tell the story - in a simple, authentic manner - of what it’s like to travel slowly on a Vespa, from the perspective of a father and his child. If we can also inspire fathers and sons who love the Vespa and the freedom that this Italian scooter has represented for 80 years to dream, we’ll be even happier!”
On 16 January 2026, Mario announced that “the project is now officially underway. The Vespa is making its way to Indonesia and we are already in Asia waiting for it, ready to set off on our great adventure. Before leaving Sydney, myself and my son Leonardo were interviewed by SBS Radio Italiana in Australia”.
