THE HOMELAND OF
THE ELDORADO AND THE AUDACE

PHOTO TOUR OF THE MOTO GUZZI FACTORY IN MANDELLO DEL LARIO, THE BIRTHPLACE OF LEGENDARY MOTORCYCLES SINCE 1921

When you pass through the historic gates in Via Parodi 57 in Mandello del Lario, a stone’s throw from Lake Como, you walk into history. This is where all Moto Guzzi motorcycles have been built, ever since 1921: two-wheelers with the unmistakeable “Eagle”, a brand without equals, one of the oldest and noblest motorcycle marques in the world. So it’s no surprise if the factory, the walls, the signs, the spaces – almost unchanged over nine decades – immediately exert an irresistible appeal. What has changed, of course, is the technological content and design of the two-wheeler gems that leave the factory gates. The “latest 1400cc arrivals” – the Eldorado, a luxurious modern heir to the fondly remembered “850” that conquered the USA, and the Audace, a powerfully muscular no-fuss rebel – are no exceptions.

FOUR STEPS THROUGH THE LEGEND

This photo report is intended for true Moto Guzzi believers; it was made at the end of July, when the Eldorado was in production, alternating with the Eldorado on the assembly lines. The next step is the engine shop, and finally on to the floor where the “beauties” are carefully checked before being packaged and shipped to Moto Guzzi dealers all over the world.
(Monica Volpi Photographer).

MOTORCYCLE ASSEMBLY LINES

This is where the Eldorado and the Audace, and all the other Guzzi bikes, take shape and where the 1400cc twin-cylinder “meets” the motorcycle. Twenty-four timer workstations, plus one, from frame stamping to the end of the line, with two sections where the vehicle is lowered on to the engine (a marvel to watch) and can be rotated through 360° to give the workers total access to perform all the “joining” operations. The completed two-wheeler then moves to the final automated station before reaching the platform where the checks and technical tests are conducted. On each motorcycle, one by one. This is the great thing: a factory floor resembling a craftsman’s workshop, which produces advanced technological jewels that are supreme examples of Italian manufacturing excellence.

ENGINE ASSEMBLY LINE

This is the factory shop where the legendary Guzzi twin-cylinder engines are assembled, by hand, one by one. Here, you breathe the history of a unique engine whose exclusive architecture continues, even today, to constitute the essence of the Moto Guzzi epic. At the 17 workstations, each engine is assembled with its various components, and then engine, gearbox and suspensions undergo a 100% running in, in accordance with the technical specifications, and numerous tests.

READY FOR THE ROAD

The final touches, the application of the marques with the soaring eagle, and the Eldorado and the Audace are on their way: ready for the world’s roads.

NEW MOTO GUZZI CALIFORNIA 1400 TOURING S.E.
THE EVEN MORE LUXURIOUS FLAGSHIP

FOR 2015 THE MOTO GUZZI FLAGSHIP IS AVAILABLE IN AN EVEN MORE LUXURIOUS VERSION: COMFORT AND WIND PROTECTION FOR RIDE AND PASSENGER INCREASE, CONFIRMING THE GREAT PERFORMANCE AND RIDEABILITY THAT HAVE MADE THE CALIFORNIA TOURIN THE POINT OF REFERENCE FORT ITS SEGMENT

California 1400 Touring S.E. is the latest heir to the successful project with which Moto Guzzi redesigned the concept of luxury motorcycle at the end of 2012. The Touring is a perfect representation of Moto Guzzi's culture and the ability to build unique motorcycles that has been around since 1921: it is the California in its most classic expression, unequalled in terms of style, comfort, performance and reliability. Success driven by a rare quality: knowing how to reconcile the comfort and cargo capacity of a custom bike with the dynamic performance of a powerful cruiser.

Powerful, ultra-equipped, exclusive, with an innovative, yet highly personal and traditional design, the California Touring manages to enhance like no other the values of one of the noblest brands in the world and the symbol of "Made in Italy". Surprising not only because of the smallest aesthetic details, but also because of the technical choices: In fact, the Touring is a true traveller driven by the largest V-twin ever made in Europe, the first custom bike equipped with advanced electronic control systems such as traction control, ABS and a Ride-by-wire accelerator, as well as having a brand new frame with an elastic engine mounting system capable of eliminating vibration transfer entirely.

For 2015 the California 1400 Touring is available in a new S.E. version. - Special Edition, characterised by a two-tone graphic in two colours: brown Executive and grey Elegance. This version, which has a built-in passenger backrest and grab handle, emphasises the virtual continuity with its ancestors through the reinterpretation of various style elements. The most obvious of these are connected to the profile of the saddle, the chromium grab handle and the side panels inspired by the historic Guzzi T3 as well as a ratio between the fuel tank and engine sizes, which favours the latter, just like the style of the glorious V7 and V850. This impression is especially emphasised by the ingenious fuel tank, made in metal, with a 21 litre central body and two side covers where the Eagle logo is proudly displayed, moulded on the powerful thermal units of 1400cc engine.

This allusion to Moto Guzzi's glorious heritage is further accentuated by the horizontal lines of the highly polished silencers that end at the rear mudguard, moulded over the impressive 200 tyre and equipped with a spectacular dual LED light cluster that also includes the turn indicators. The front view is no less impressive, with a complex surface headlight unit and a polyelliptical light with LED daylight running light (DRL). The particular polygon shape of the headlight dominates the luxurious front end, enriched in classic California tradition by the windshield and supplementary lights, painted to match the body, as well as the new front deflectors. The elegant style of the California Touring S.E. is also enhanced by the lightweight alloy wheels with an original ribbed design, as well as the headlight frame, the supplementary lights and the refined valve covers. The 46 mm fork is another throwback to its glorious ancestors: completely sealed by dominating “telescopes” which now show of a chromium finish. Intended for those who devour kilometres, the California Touring S.E. is unrivalled in terms of comfort and load capacity thanks to its generous saddle and the spacious and elegant 35 litre side panniers, the cruise control feature and the dampening action of the elastic kinematic mounting system for the twin-cylinder engine. The engine mounted is the sculpturesque 1380 cc big bore, the absolute top of its class in terms of performance and consumption, equipped with Ride-by-wire multimap electronic engine management. This technology allows the rider to choose one of three engine management maps: Turismo, Veloce and Pioggia. The dynamic performance of the vehicle is also kept under control by its traction control system (MGCT), which can be adjusted on three actuation levels in order to increase active safety without impacting performance and riding pleasure.

USA: THE MOTO GUZZI STELVIO NTX
IN ARIZONA, TESTED BY SCOTT BRADY

HERE THE ARTICLE OF SCOTT BRADY – EXPEDITION & OVERLAND JOURNAL. DISCOVER WHAT HE SAYS AFTER 1,800 MILES ON THE SADDLE OF THE MOTO GUZZI NTX. PHOTOGRAPY BY CHRIS COLLARD AND CHRISTOPHE NOEL

“WE PUSH THE STELVIO TO THE LIMITS AND THIS ITALIAN ADVENTURER BEGS FOR MORE”
The adventure motorcycle consumer has become shockingly monotheistic, missing many of the tasty delights from outside of the Teutonic territories, principally the recent offerings from Leicestershire, UK and Lombardy, Italy. For this short-term test, our team is looking at the adventure motorcycle from Moto Guzzi, the 1200 Stelvio. While the Moto Guzzi brand may be lesser known, they are owned by the Piaggio Group, Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacture. Moto Guzzi has a fascinating history, being Europe’s oldest (continuous) motorcycle manufacturer, and having spawned from aviation, the two founders starting their careers as World War I fighter pilots.

The Moto Guzzi is a handsome machine, with an appearance both classic and unique from the throngs of “look-a-likes”

The Stelvio was first introduced in 2008, and named after one of the greatest riding roads in the world, Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy. For 2012, it received a major freshening, most notable being the increase in fuel capacity to 8.5 gallons, the largest factory tank in the ADV segment. The air/oil cooled 1151 v-twin has eight valves and develops 105-horsepower @ 7,250 RPM. However, it is the 83 lb-ft of torque @ 5,800 RPM that is most present and useful in the dirt and when managing an expedition load in the streets of Antigua. The engine is simple and has proven to be perfectly reliable in our few months with it. It starts easily, settling into a heavy rumble, alerting the rider to the displacement, and once underway, the Quattrovalvole has a lustful note on acceleration. Observed fuel economy has been 40 MPG on the highway and closer to 32 on the trail- queue the massive fuel tank. The Stelvio is also a fantastic value, retailing at less than $16,000 with all of the goodies. That is almost $9,000 less than a similarly equipped GS Adventure (with premium package). You can buy the Stelvio and ride to Ushuaia for the same cash - think about that for a minute.

In more technical terrain, the balance of the motorcycle saved the day, as did the well-tuned suspension.

“IN THE DIRT”. Off-road, the Stelvio was a pleasant surprise, this particular unit fitted with new TKC80s and the NTX package. This travel package includes an aluminium skid plate (not designed as a ‘bash’ plate), engine guards, Hella lighting, hand guards and high-quality panniers. These panniers are well-designed with solid mounting and a quick detach system. They look good on the bike and would be thoroughly suitable to dirt travel. The Stelvio comes with thick rubber inserts to the off-road pegs, these insert easily removed with a 8mm bolt, revealing a reasonably wide and high traction metal surface. This also lowers the rider position slightly, making standing easier. On my first off-highway foray, I rotated the bars up about 15-degrees, which made for semi-comfortable riding on the pegs. A 30mm bar riser would make it perfect.
Initial impressions on the dirt are quite good, particularly for a 600-pound motorcycle. The suspension travel is just under seven inches in the front and around six inches in the rear. The upside-down forks are built by Marzocchi, and are exceptionally well tuned. I rode this bike hard on the first dirt trip and would never have pegged the travel at 6.7-inches. The entire structure is ridged and progressive, allowing for subtle damping on gravel roads but a reassuring ramping of both rate and compression valving with big hits. If the rider keeps the Stelvio rolling along, the weight is hardly noticeable and on par with other big bikes. It is well balanced and the bars are wide for leverage. This is not to say the Stelvio is a dirt bike, but despite its weight and modest suspension travel, it will go anywhere a big adventure tourer is intended to travel. Controls are easy to modulate, although I was gentle (perhaps unnecessarily) on the dry clutch. The ABS is fine on most dirt scenarios and fortunately (thank you Moto Guzzi!) easy to turn off with a single, large button on the right switchgear panel. In traction control (TC) position one, the TC is actually useful, controlling unnecessary wheel spin and saving the rear tire for more critical moments. The TC can also be set to position two, which is the most invasive for conditions like rain. Thankfully, TC can also be easily turned off, even while moving.
I now have two months on the Stelvio and hundreds of dirt miles, including some serious testing at our local proving grounds. I pushed the bike beyond what 99% of the owners would ever consider and it never disappointed, never failed, never crashed. I rode it off of massive granite boulders, jumped it and plowed through hip deep water; with each new obstacle I gained further confidence in the Moto Guzzi. This bike gives little up to the best of the big bikes on the dirt and thoroughly trounces some of the other heavy-weight competitors.

Deep water fording is as good as anything out there, and in many cases better. The air intake is high, and at the back of the motorcycle, positioned under the pillion seat.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS. This sums up our first impressions of the Stelvio after 1,800 miles in the saddle. I have ridden this bike nearly daily and we are getting along “fantastic”! Our plans over the next few months are to push the bike further afield and take it on some serious road trips and overland routes. So far, the Stelvio has been perfectly reliable, but we need more miles to weigh in on ultimate durability. Look for more updates in the coming weeks for on road performance and a few modifications, then a complete evaluation in Overland Journal. We will also provide a final review, including pros and cons, along with how the Moto Guzzi stacks up against the competition. In the meantime, I am going to fire up that magical Quattrovalvole. Ciao!

RIDING PLEASURE AT ITS BEST

MOTO GUZZI STELVIO 1200 8V – NTX

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 8V - official video
Named after the famous Alpine pass that connects Valtelline Valley to Vinschgau Valley with 84 amazing s-bends between them, Stelvio has launched Moto Guzzi back among the stars of the maxi enduro world. Looking at it, you can picture it completely at home not only amid the Alpine passes but even on the tracks of the Sahara, thanks to that special design that conjures up images of the great African marathons. Just note how its large, 32-litre tank and top fairing are united in a light fairing that combines the double headlight assembly, flush-mounted to protect it from any possible damage in the event of a fall. Even the cockpit, containing a full range of instruments and designed to take a GPS navigation system, is conceived for travellers who will appreciate the possibility to adjust the windshield height and have the luggage rack integrated with the passenger grab handle and the fixings for the side panniers.

The heart beating inside this magnificent touring bike is the renowned V-shaped 90° transverse twin-cylinder "QV"1.2 engine - the highest performer of all the engine families manufactured at Mandello del Lario, which has now reached exclusive levels as far as its technical/performance development is concerned. This version can boast careful attention to achieve more silent and smoother running, whilst tweaking the electronic control, timing and cooling system. The integrated ignition and injection ECU exploits the signals sent by the two lambda probes to guarantee adequate feeding throughout the entire combustion cycle, improving the response to throttle control and low-to-mid-range power delivery, as well as notably reducing consumption and harmful emissions. The ATC (advanced traction control) system is also used: this system controls ignition advance and injection to cut torque delivery whenever a sudden loss of grip is detected so as to help the rider to remain in control under extreme, unexpected conditions. Like ABS, this device can be excluded. In terms of performance, the "QV" boasts a maximum torque of over 113 Nm delivered at a mere 5,800 rpm, and easily reaches a peak in output of over 105 HP; it practically reaches an automobile-level speed of 7,250 rpm.

The NTX is the more “adventurous“ version of the Stelvio 8V, sharing all the technical features of the basic version but standing out for the sturdy, imposing "armour" that embraces it and comprises the oil sump guard, engine guard, cylinder guard, full cover hand-guards and extra large windshield with additional appendages to protect the rider and his bike from any dangers throughout his trip. A bike dedicated to long haul travellers naturally needs luggage space, hence the spacious aluminium panniers and additional halogen lights. Even more luxury options are available on the accessory catalogue including a GPS navigator installation kit, heated hand-grips, CA.RC protection (Compact Reactive Cardan Shaft Drive), aluminium top box for the NTX or side wind deflectors, extra large windshield, dedicated body coloured plastic polymer panniers and top box kit for the 8V version.

JORDAN: THE ROYAL GUARD ON MOTO GUZZI BIKES
ON DISPLAY AT THE 69TH INDEPENDENCE DAY

Jordan officially achieved its independence from the British protectorate and was declared a kingdom on 25 May 1946. Since then, Independence Day has been celebrated every year throughout the “Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan”. For this year’s celebrations, the Royal Court published a video on Youtube dedicated to all Jordanians.

The 69th anniversary of independence took place on 25 May 2015 in the capital city of Amman, attended by the entire Hashemite court, with Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah II. The royal car was escorted by the Royal Guard riding Moto Guzzi bikes (The Red Royal Moto Guzzi Guard), who then opened the great parade marking the 69th Jordanian Independence Day.

During the anniversary celebrations, the King presented Royal Medals, including special medals of the Order of Independence, to everyone who has contributed to Jordan’s progress. Those honoured by His Majesty King Abdullah II included Said Darwazeh (chairman of the Darwazeh Group investment company), who was invested with the highest honour (Order of Independence of the First Class), for contributing to the growth of the national industry and services to the community. Said Darwazeh is a cousin of Tamer Darwazeh (owner and CEO of Jordan Motors, the Piaggio Group importer in Jordan). “This is a double honour for our family,” said Tamer. “Watching the procession of splendid Moto Guzzi motorbikes and receiving the medal of honour from the King.” Congratulations!

CHINA: MOTORCYCLE TOUR FOR CHARITY
WITH THE CALIFORNIA TOURING AND V7

A motorcycle trip was organised recently for charity, in the countryside of Guangdong province, in southern China. The event, supported by the subsidiary Piaggio Foshan Motorcycle Co. Ltd. of Foshan City, was promoted together with “The Guandong Orphan Education Society” (a non-profit NGO) and in cooperation with a charity TV program of the Guangzhou Television channel.

During the tour, a fleet of around thirty bikers and volunteers offered assistance to many children in need, notably in the suburbs of the city of Guangzhou.

Piaggio China took part with two Moto Guzzi motorbikes (a California Touring and a V7 Racer), soon to be launched on the Chinese market. The Piaggio Group contributes to the improvement of life in the communities in which it operates worldwide. On many occasions, as in this case, it operates in agreement with dealers, to demonstrate its concrete commitment to social responsibility, with a special focus on the weakest segments of Chinese society, such as needy children and students. Enormous satisfaction and emotion was experienced by the recipients and by the riders on the saddle of their roaring motorbikes, among which the Moto Guzzi California and V7 attracted many admiring glances.

SUPER MAX BIAGGI
TAKES AN EXTRAORDINARY PODIUM FINISH AT SEPANG

FOR THE “CORSARO” ROARING 44 YEARS, THE MALAYSIAN ROUND WAS HIS SECOND WILD CARD OF THE SEASON FOR APRILIA RACING, AND HIS 71st PODIUM IN SUPERBIKE. GREAT THIRD PLACE FOR TORRES IN RACE 2

Sepang (Malaysia), 2 August 2015 – In the Malaysian World Superbike round Max Biaggi, with a race strategy worthy of a multiple world champion, took third place astride his Aprilia RSV4 RF. It was an extraordinary result taken in Race 1 at his second wild card of the season, three years after retiring from racing and at 44 years of age. Begun as an exciting and impossible challenge with his participation in the Misano race, Biaggi's return astride his Aprilia has now been solidified with an exceptional result, his 71st SBK podium.

Max, who started from the second row thanks to his excellent performance in the qualifiers, battled with the official Aprilia riders for fourth place in the first part of the race. After overcoming Haslam and Torres, Biaggi focused on pushing hard, maintaining a fast and consistent pace which allowed him to look after his tyres and, above all, make a brilliant comeback against Sykes who had begun to drop back and lose contact with Rea and Davies. After an impressive progression it was in the final, exciting lap that Biaggi overtook the Brit, taking third place and stepping onto the podium for the first time since Portimão in 2012, the last full season of his career.

Having trouble managing their tyres, Torres and Haslam finished Race 1 far from the podium after having been protagonists at the beginning of the race on fresh tyres. The Aprilia Racing – Red Devils riders finished seventh (Haslam, n. 91) and tenth (Torres, n. 81).

In Race 2, with Biaggi crashing out due to contact with Sykes after an excellent start that had placed him in the lead at the first turn, it was Jordi Torres who held the Aprilia colours high with a third place finish. The Spaniard's second podium of the season can at the end of an extremely consistent race where he broke away from the group and managed his placement behind Davies and Rea. Haslam was a bit behind again, finishing in seventh with tyre management troubles.
MAX BIAGGI: “A CHALLENGE OVERCOME”

“The podium is an incredible result. It is a challenge overcome, the challenge of raising the bar to something that no one had ever done before. My race pace was consistent. Rea, Davies and Sykes pulled away at the front straight away. I tried to find my pace without destroying the tyre by overheating it. It wasn't easy because at the same time you have to push. After overtaking my teammates I began to focus on Sykes who was getting closer and closer. I managed to catch him up and overtake him right at the last lap. I'm super happy. This is the result I was dreaming of, a real cherry on top and the best I could have hoped to achieve. The crash in Race 2 doesn't take anything away from my satisfaction. Now that the weekend is over I can reveal that my crash during the tests last week “gave” me a left shoulder dislocation and an injury that required stitches on my right ankle. It was mainly the shoulder that bothered me, especially in the more flowing parts of the track. But we gritted our teeth and everything went brilliantly - just one more reason to rush into a happy holiday break.”

JORDI TORRES: “THANK TO MY TEAM”

“First of all I would like to thank my team. Between Race 1 and Race 2 the guys did an incredible job, changing the bike, working on the setup and the electronic adjustment, particularly on the engine brake. This let me ride much more smoothly. I may have wanted to be more aggressive just out of my own instinct, but this let me look after my tyres well in the second race and take this podium which makes me happy. Evidently it's just my destiny this season - I need a bad Race 1 to have great results in the second one. It was an important race for me because it taught me a lot and that is what I want out of this season. Now I can't wait to get to Jerez (next 20th of September, ed.) and give 100%.”

LEON HASLAM

“I had problems in both races. I had a lot of trouble losing the front. If I tried to conserve the rear tyre it would stress the front and I would lose speed going into turns. In the first race the tyres wore out very quickly and I wasn't able to maintain a fast enough pace. In the second I started well, but at the end I was lapping slower than the first race. Toward the end of the race I made a last ditch effort to overtake the riders ahead of me but I just didn't have the grip. I'm very disappointed because on this track the goal was to get onto the podium but we didn't manage to do that.”

EXCLUSIVE

FROM THE SEPANG PITLANE:
AN INTERVIEW WITH MAX BIAGGI

Sepang, Malaysia, 2 August 2015 – It’s less than an hour from the end of Race 2 in Sepang, the venue for the Malaysian round of the 2015 World SBK championship. A day that will be remembered for the extraordinary performance of Max Biaggi, who returned to the podium of a world championship at the age of 44, three years after retiring from racing.
In the pitlane, the equatorial heat is fierce, the fans placed here and there have little effect. But Biaggi looks at ease: as he relaxes, he chats with the lads from his team, commenting on the result of the second race that saw him in the spotlight thanks to a few bends.
Above all, he relives the race that brought a result few would have thought possible.

MAX, FIRST OF ALL TELL US ABOUT THIS FANTASTIC RACE
“It was incredible, I wasn’t the fastest rider but I was pretty strong. Sykes, Rea and Davies were very, very quick at the start, and got away fast straightaway. I wasn’t able to keep up with them, so I went at my own pace, trying not to ruin the rubber by overheating it. It wasn’t easy because I had to push at the same time so as not to lose too much ground. Then I saw some of the others were worse off than me, first I managed to overtake my teammates and then I began to see that green dot getting closer and closer. Then there were three laps to go, then two, one...”

THE LAST LAP WAS PACKED WITH EMOTION…
“I was determined to resist, because by then none of us had much rubber. On the first bend, I wanted to overtake, he tried to stop me, then he went a little wide and I slipped in. After three bends, I looked back and saw I’d already gained some ground and my only thought was to go all out to the finish.”

SIX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES, A HOST OF VICTORIES, UNFORGETTABLE RACES: AMONG ALL YOUR TRIUMPHS, WHERE DOES THIS RESULT FIT IN?
“It’s hugely important, getting to the podium at 44, three years after retiring, and doing so with a decisive overtake on the last lap meant I reached the goal I wanted and the way I had dreamed of. This is one of my best days, because it wasn’t a race like the others, I won’t say it was a like a world victory, but from a human viewpoint it comes close. And the fall in race 2 doesn’t detract from the sense of satisfaction. Being back on the podium after three years away, when I watched the races at home or as a commentator for Mediaset, was a special emotion. It’s different to the way you feel when you race every two weeks and manage to stay in a cold ‘race mode’. Now that I’ve experienced the two emotions from two such different viewpoints I can understand it.”

AND AFTER RACE 2. YOU REVEALED A SMALL SECRET…
“Yes, at the end of the weekend I was able to say that my fall during the tests the week before the races dislocated my shoulder and injured my ankle, which needed stitches. The shoulder gave me most trouble, especially during the guided part of the circuit. But I gritted my teeth and it all went wonderfully well.”

HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO PLAN AND THEN ACHIEVE THIS WBSK FEAT?
“My return began as an impossible challenge, having to raise the bar always a little bit more to achieve something no one else had ever achieved. So the excellent result at Misano was important. But it was very difficult, and you definitely feel it when you’ve been away from races for three years! Getting really fit isn’t enough, you need the reflexes a rider has when he competes in a championship on a regular basis. These riders who compete throughout the championship come on to the circuit on the Friday morning, mentally ready to get the bike ready fast, to push from the word go, and they have the support of a team that does the same thing throughout the season. The guys in the test team, like me, had to regain this attitude and this speed of reaction, which only comes when you compete regularly at the race weekends.”

MOTOGP:
STEFAN BRADL TO RIDE AN APRILIA RS-GP
ALONGSIDE ALVARO BAUTISTA

Noale, 1 August 2015 - Twenty-five year old German rider Stefan Bradl, 2011 Moto2 World Champion, will take part in the remaining nine 2015 MotoGP World Championship races astride the second Aprilia Racing Team Gresini Aprilia RS-GP alongside Alvaro Bautista. Bradl will make his first appearance on the Aprilia RS-GP at the Indianapolis Grand Prix scheduled from 7 to 9 August, 10th race of the Word Championship; remain 8 GP to run, the last one will be on the 8th November in Valencia.

MOTO2 CHAMPION. Born in the Bavarian city of Augusta on 29 November 1989, Stefan Bradl made his debut in World Championship Motorycle racing in the 125cc category in 2005. In 2008 he took two wins and finished the season fourth in the overall standings. In 2010 he moved to Moto2, a category where he would be crowned World Champion the following year thanks to four wins. His rookie year in MotoGP came in 2012 astride a Honda, a bike that Bradl raced for another two seasons, taking a second place finish in the 2013 United States Grand Prix as his best result. This season Bradl has participated in the first eight Grand Prix races on the calendar astride the Forward Racing team Open class Yamaha, earning nine points. A fractured scaphoid in his right wrist suffered during the Dutch GP at Assen forced him to miss his home race at Sachsenring on 12 July.

PROGRESS AT THE GERMAN GP: BAUTISTA FINISHING 14th PLACE
RACE DEBUT AND 20th PLACE FOR MICHAEL LAVERTY

Sachsenring (Germany), 12 July 2015 - Alvaro Bautista rode his Aprilia RS-GP to fourteenth place in the German GP which means two more championship points for Aprilia Racing Team Gresini. Alvaro had a great start which took him to twelfth place at the end of the first lap and, more importantly, in contact with the central part of the group. Rear tyre wear and consequent loss of grip slowed him a bit in the second half of the race but didn't keep him from winning a few battles, especially with Barbera and Miller, to finish in the points. Michael Laverty, riding his first race astride the V4 from Noale, finished the race, contributing to collecting data, which is the primary goal of the Italian team for this season.

LAVERTY, FROM TESTER TO RIDER AT THE SACHSENRING

Noale (Italy), 8 July 2015 – Aprilia Racing and Marco Melandri have reached an agreement by mutual consent to terminate the contractual obligations between Marco Melandri and Aprilia Racing. Consequently, Marco Melandri was not be lined up on the grid with Aprilia Racing starting from the German Grand Prix on 12 July where, alongside Alvaro Bautista, the tester Michael Laverty – astride the number 70 Aprilia RS-GP – has rode his début race for Aprilia: “I have been riding with the Aprilia test team so I am comfortable with the Aprilia RS-GP machine and on the Bridgestones. Firstly I must adapt the race bikes to suit me and then look to keep progressing”. Born in Toomebridge (Northern Ireland) on 7 June 1981, Laverty is currently part of the test team working on developing the Aprilia RS-GP participating in the MotoGP world championship, and he will be continuing as a tester both for the current configuration of the bike and for the future 2016 version of the prototype.

Garage

MOTO GUZZI PASSION
TIMES FOUR

FOUR STYLES, NINETY ACCESSORIES, A THOUSAND POSSIBILITIES FOR PERSONALISATION. THE ONLY THING PEOPLE ENTERING THE MOTO GUZZI GARAGE CAN BE CERTAIN OF IS THAT THEY DON’T KNOW HOW THEY’LL COME OUT! SO SAYS REPORTER STEFANO MARTIGNONI OF RED-LIVE.IT
There are motorbikes that stand out from the crowd, and there are bikers who stand out from the crowd. Moto Guzzi bikes and Guzzi bikers belong to this category of motorcycles and men. Fashion and type approval are unpopular terms, the preference is for personality, individuality, character, distinction. Some bikers want their bike to say who and what they are, as if they were mirrors of their riders. Among all the Moto Guzzi bikes, none is so suitable for personalisation as the V7 and so suited to the style of the individual rider. This is why Mandello has been hard at work to come up with almost one hundred special accessories for the “seven and a half”, compatible with both the first and the second versions. Not only that: they have combined some of the elements together to create four styles, each one inspired by a particular approach to being a motorcyclist and a Guzzi rider, to stimulate the imagination and create a basic mood. These are not pre-packaged kits, but canvases with a colour on which you can start painting according to your personal tastes.

DARK RIDER: METROPOLITAN TOTAL BLACK

The first style proposed by Moto Guzzi takes its inspiration from night-time metropolitan settings, but also from the company’s own history: the nickname of the legendary Omobono Tenni was “the black devil”. The special accessories include the black aluminium fairing, side panels and mudguards, the black fuel tank with the traditional Moto Guzzi red eagle and the spoked wheels, to complete the “total black” look.

SCRAMBLER: SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

For a bike with an off-road look and powerful personality that is perfect for the road. The eye is immediately drawn to the high 2-in-1 exhaust, the knobby tyres, the handlebar crossbar and the off-road footpegs. Additional elements include the long mudguards, the satin-finish number boards and protective elements, the vintage 1970s saddle. The leather tool bag and side bag add an extra personal touch.

LEGEND: CONTEMPORARY TRADITION

Another immersion in Guzzi history, from a modern perspective. In the 1940s, the Moto Guzzi Alce, the motorcycle used by the Italian Army, had a reputation for reliability, robustness and outstanding flexibility. The Legend accessories let you re-interpret this exciting classic. High 2-in-1 exhaust, knobby tyres, olive green fuel tank, side panels and mudguards. The handlebar crossbar, the black panniers, the long saddle (with room for two people), the side bag in natural leather complete a look with particularly close associations with the history of Moto Guzzi.

DAPPER: A SHINY SPORTY LOOK

Created with a series of accessories developed to reprise the Café Racer, a world that never goes out of fashion. The tribute to the 1970s is in polished aluminium (mudguards, injector covers, protections, number boards), the shape of the low semi-handlebars and the single-seat saddle, for a racer-type riding style. The mirrors at the ends of the handlebar are the icing on the cake.

A LOVE STORY THAT BEGINS IN THE GARAGE

All the items have been designed, developed and produced by Moto Guzzi, so they been tested and checked like every other original element on the motorcycles. They are all fully interchangeable with the standard components, enabling owners to return the bike to its original configuration. They are also type approved and absolutely “street legal”, and do not affect the vehicle warranty.
The gateway into this fascinating world could only be a garage… Garagemotoguzzi.com is a virtual space where you can find all the information you need about the original accessories for the V7 generation and the combinations developed by Moto Guzzi, for four very different riding experiences. The new garagemotoguzzi.com website also offers a real garage experience in a virtual dimension. Here, the Guzzi biker can configure their own V7 to create a genuine special model, using drawings, photographs and videos laid out on a background resembling a mechanic’s work bench. The classic girly calendar may not be there, but there are plenty of them available on the web…

IN THE MANDELLO GARAGE…

From left to right, here are the four versions proposed by Moto Guzzi. The fifth bike is a free interpretation, created spontaneously from a selection of accessories and colours.

We tried the personalisation experience directly in Mandello, in the workshop that develops the special models. A semi-stripped V7 II was already waiting on the bridge in front of us, and to one side, on a bench along the wall, was a selection of accessories from which we could choose freely and mount on the bike. After the assembly operations were complete, we set off for Pian del Tivano, each one of us on a different V7 special, to see how each version could offer a specific riding experience. Leaving aside the riding impressions of the V7, which is an extremely pleasing and enjoyable bike, we appreciated how just a few well-considered adjustments make it possible to create a made-to-measure bike. A high handlebar or semi-handlebars, standard shock absorbers or Bitubo performance dampers, but also the simple sound of the Arrow 2-in-1 exhaust: all these details offer very different sensations.
If it’s true that “Customising your bike is the beginning of a great love story”, as the home page claim says, then garagemotoguzzi.com is the place where the love story begins. Guzzi bikers, get the children off to bed and open the garage door…

APRILIA CAPONORD FOR THE CARABINIERI

DELIVERY OF AN INITIAL FLEET OF 25 BIKES TO THE DIVISIONS IN MILAN AND TURIN. 1200 CC, WITH ABS AND MORE THAN 50 SPECIAL FEATURES

At the end of March, at the Hazon barracks in Rome, which house the General Headquarters of the Carabinieri, Italy's military police corps, the prototype was presented of the Aprilia Caponord 1200 ABS with an institutional livery and equipped for the Carabinieri (the bike features special sound and light devices, radio support, special weapon carriers). The presentation was attended by the corps’ General Commander, General Tullio Del Sette, senior officers and delegates from the Cocer central council.

After successfully bidding in 2014 for the contract to supply 25 motorcycles, the Piaggio Group constructed the two-wheeler for the presentation, the result of a demanding project for the development of the bike’s special features. The prototype developed by Aprilia engineers at the company headquarters in Noale, in the Veneto, then underwent rigorous tests by Carabinieri experts and a series of technical adjustments.

The subsequent stage was the delivery, at the end of June, of the entire fleet of 25 Aprilia Caponord 1200 ABS motorcycles to the Carabinieri divisions in Milan and Turin. An additional 54 special bikes will be delivered by the end of the year.

The photos in this article (supplied by the Carabinieri) show the Aprilia Caponord motorbikes “on duty” in Milan, providing surveillance at Expo 2015. The Carabinieri motorcyclists – who go out in all weathers and on any roads – and will have the opportunity to appreciate the ridability, comfort, versatility and technology of the Aprilia Caponord.

The photo gallery below shows the prototype, which features more than 50 specific accessories. These include: LED headlamps built into the fairing; protective bag frames; siren/leg shield frames; special graphics; rear radio cover; reduced manual steering column; engine cover; dual sirens; integrated radio mike; special control panel for sirens and flashing lights; horn/siren switch.

The motorcycles also feature an electric system with a special battery for the LED lights, steering column, sirens and radio. The system can be turned on even if the engine is not running, to permit use of the radio, flashing lights and sirens.

Anniversary

1950-2015:
THE MOTO GUZZI WIND TUNNEL
CELEBRATES 65 YEARS

Moto Guzzi was the world’s first motor vehicle manufacturer to construct a life-size wind tunnel (1:1). The tunnel was built in 1950, at the company’s historic factory in Via Parodi 57, Mandello del Lario. At the time, it was a futuristic technological resource: a top wind speed of 225 km/h and a turbine powered by a 300 HP electric engine, with a variable-pitch propeller. The tunnel was the only facility in the world for aerodynamic testing of motorcycles, enabling trials to be performed at the highest speeds possible for mechanical equipment at that time: it proved immediately useful for the development of fairings for racing bikes, delivering significant speed increases in subsequent tests, equivalent to the important reductions in air drag on the motorcycle in question. As a bike was tested, the rider tried out the best racing position at different speeds. When the wind tunnel tests were completed, each motorcycle presented optimal aerodynamic characteristics, and each rider knew exactly how to position himself on the bike to achieve the maximum speed during races.
These were the glorious years when the Mandello constructor was a leading name in world motorcycle racing, and one of the first companies to sign up for the World Championship created in 1949. Its Roll of Honour is an impressive list of world titles, riders and brands in the 250 and 350 classes, conquered by legendary riders (Ruffo, Lorenzetti, Anderson, Lomas, Campbell), for a total of 15 world speed titles and 11 Tourist Trophies. The racing team mechanics were a group of passionate experts, including Umberto Todero and Enrico Cantoni, led by a designer whose bold achievements put his name in the history books: Giulio Cesare Carcano, designer of the Guzzi Eight Cylinder 500 from 1956. A futuristic project whose sophisticated technical solutions and top speed of 285 km/h made it a legend in motorcycle technology.
Another anniversary: in addition to the wind tunnel, 1950 was also the year when Aurelio Galfetti won the Swiss Speed Championship on a Moto Guzzi 250cc and 500cc.

Although Moto Guzzi withdrew from competitive sport at the end of 1957, its racing experience and tunnel tests broadened its expertise and insights into the advantages of optimal aerodynamic efficiency, which benefited its mass motorcycle production operations. The wind tunnel proved useful in the definition of an aerodynamic protection ensuring a significant reduction in air drag, with a consequent increase in top speed and an important reduction in fuel consumption (with advantages in terms of weight, since less fuel needed to be carried and fuel tanks were smaller, and in terms of weight distribution). The wind tunnel was also useful in analysing the position of the rider, which had to “complement” the form of the motorcycle. These scientifically based studies led to the development of the first aerodynamic protection, with the early versions of tanks extending beyond the steering head, which would evolve into dolphin fairings and later into integral fairings (subsequently eliminated, for safety reasons, as from 1958), especially on racing bikes.

Carlo Guzzi in the wind tunnel

Over the years, the wind tunnel has played “host” to other companies’ mechanics and products for aerodynamic tests (on bicycles and bobsleighs), as well as to scientists and researchers, notably physicist Enrico Fermi. The story goes that Duilio Agostini, on a Moto Guzzi Dondolino, was the first tester to enter the wind tunnel. And that when the turbine engine was turned on, the noise it made could be heard throughout Mandello del Lario.
Today, the historic tunnel is a location for photoshoots and an attraction for fans of the Eagle brand, who come through the red gates of Via Parodi for a photo by the tunnel before going off to visit the Moto Guzzi museum (which boasts the Trip Advisor 2015 excellence certificate). Here, they can see a scale model of the wind tunnel and a fascinating collection of Moto Guzzi motorcycles, from the prototypes developed in 1919 (the company was established in 1921) through nine decades to the present day. The story continues.

PRODUCT SPEC SHEET

The Moto Guzzi Sport 15 made its debut at the Milan Motor Show in 1931, the heir to the Sport 14 (a 4-stroke model that achieved a certain success). The 15 soon won an admiring public with its robust, reliable engine, ideal for daily use and touring. It was produced from 1932 to 1939, and almost 6,000 were made.

Engine: horizontal 4-stroke single cylinder, 498 cc, air cooled, kick-start lever, output 13.2 hp at 4,000 rpm. Three-speed gearshift, with multiple-disk wet clutch and chain transmission. Double-cradle tubular frame, empty weight 153 kg, top speed 100 km/h.
(Photos: yesterdays.nl).
IRRESISTIBLE! So why the Sport 15? The organisers explain: “There are motorcycles that are faster, more stylish and more powerful, but few other bikes have managed to conquer and fascinate motorcyclists at the time and today like the Sport 15. Whether it’s because of its appearance, its reliability, or the reassuring rhythm of its engine (which keeps time with the rider’s heartbeat), this model has left an indelible mark on more than one generation”.

The rally directors, Paolo Rossi, Claudio Bonalberti and Flavio Mellano, add: “For all these reasons we’ve decided to organise a special day for this bike, and have put in all our passion and knowhow to ensure an unforgettable experience. We want the event to be unique”.

Mandello del Lario: some friends from the Clan del Volano visiting Moto Guzzi, seen in front of the historic wind tunnel. Below, a parade of their splendid vintage two-wheelers, perfectly conserved and “roaring” to go.

A SPECIAL BOOK. “SPORT 15 – Istantanee di una Passione” is the title of the book the Clan del Volano has dedicated to its favourite bike, a “Guzzi model produced from 1931 to 1939, a tireless, indestructible motorbike illustrated in this book through photographs and accounts from many of its admirers”. The text has been edited by Paolo Rossi and Flavio Mellano; the photos are by Alberto Beccaris and the graphics layout by Ivano Castelli and Francesca Rota (Mucchi Editore).

ALESSANDRO LUPO: “APRILIA RS 125, A PART OF ME”

my bike movie

You never forget your first Aprilia motorbike: “she” leaves an indelible mark on your adolescence, you grow up with her. And if you are unlucky enough to lose her, she becomes a memory you keep all your life, which can still make you suffer years later. A situation familiar to Alessandro Lupo from Sicily, who tells his story in this clip dedicated to his beloved RS 125 (and the web is packed with videos from other devotees of this popular Aprilia model).

Aprilia RS 125 - A part of me

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE TEXTS IN THE VIDEO:
I never thought of a motorbike as just a means of transport… She gave me so much, more than most other things in my life. 6 April 2008, an unforgettable day; she came to my house and it was love at first sight! I was 17, I had a group of best friends and life couldn’t have been better… I grew up with her and learned to appreciate things in a different way with her. Riding down the road taking photos, laughing and talking… Nothing and no one could have wiped that smile off my face, you could see it even when I was wearing my crash helmet! Love stories come and go, but she and my friends were always there. The roads weren’t enough, we wanted to try something stronger… the racetrack! Another dream fulfilled, when we managed to scrape the money together, we put on old clothes and rode the bends scraping the tarmac with our knees… Apotheosis, adrenalin, not a care in the world. Flying and dreaming to the music of a small 2-stroke engine with a huge heart… And my long-time friends were there too. 8 June 2011, the best things come to an end… She disappeared. Someone stole her from me, she’s gone forever. They said: “It’s just a motorbike…” Then I’m just a person… This video isn’t intended to show off my skill as a photo editor or how smart my bike was. It’s been eight months since I’ve seen her, these photos are the only things I have left. I haven’t got another two-wheeler, because I’ve got to pay my way through university to build my future and perhaps, who knows… One day I’ll have another bike to remind me of her.

The “love story”, which is what this is, began in 2008 when Alessandro was 17: on the saddle of his RS he had wonderful times, on the road and on the racetrack, sharing his passion with his friends. The dream shattered in 2011 when someone stole his motorbike, taking away a piece of his heart: “a part of me”, writes Alessandro, a young architect and dedicated biker living in Palermo, with a master’s degree in Transportation & Automotive Design. The way he remembers his beloved bike, and puts together the photos he has of “her” and the unforgettable times he spent with her, touches the heart. A lover who has lost the woman of his life.

“I spent three wonderful years with her. Having a motorbike means so much… far more exciting than ruining your life with drugs, a unique experience from every point of view. In memory of my Aprilia RS 125”, is Alessandro’s final comment. And who can blame him?
