REVIVAL OF AN OLD PARTNERSHIP BASED ON SOLID COMMON ROOTS: A WINNING TRADITION, PASSION, COMMITMENT, TIES WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THE RENOVATION OF THE ROWING CLUBHOUSE GETS UNDERWAY.
Mandello del Lario, 14 July 2017 – Authenticity, a winning tradition, passion and ties with the local community are the values linking the history of Moto Guzzi and the history of the eponymous rowing club in Mandello del Lario.
Sharing common roots, Moto Guzzi and Canottieri Moto Guzzi are resuming their partnership, and their first goal is the renovation of the old clubhouse on the Lecco side of the river Lario. The building has witnessed the development of whole generations of athletes who have attained the highest levels of rowing; and the tradition continues today, with four juniors from the Canottieri due to join the Italian rowing team at the forthcoming world championships in Trakai, Lithuania (2-6 August 2017) and the Jeunesse cup in Hazewinkel, Belgium (28-30 July 2017). Meanwhile, the winners in the Boys category at the finals of the 2016 Italian championship in Gavirate were from the Canottieri Moto Guzzi.
The first stage in the renovation, coordinated by Moto Guzzi, will involve structural and aesthetic work on the clubhouse, with new floors, the replacement of some parts of the bearing structure, and a new coat of paint, inside and out. The renewed partnership between Moto Guzzi and Canottieri Moto Guzzi will be made official at the rowing event being organised by the club for Saturday 22 July, at the town Lido in Mandello del Lario.
The roll of honour of the Canottieri Moto Guzzi rowing club (founded in 1929, Stella d’Oro medal for contributions to sport) consists of 22 European and world championship titles, as well as 80 Italian championship titles, plus 10 Olympic gold medals, one silver and five bronzes won by club athletes in 88 years that have gone down in the history of Italian rowing. Particular highlights include the gold medal at the London Olympics in 1948 in the coxless four, with all four rowers from the Canottieri Moto Guzzi (Moioli, Morille, Invernizzi and Faggi), and the encore at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne in the coxed four (Trincavelli, Winkler, Vanzin, Sgheiz, cox Stefanoni). The tenth gold medal was won in Seoul in 1988 by Piero Poli in the quad scull. The silver medal was taken in Sydney in 2000 by Carlo Mornati in the coxless four. The 5 bronze medals came at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, in the coxed four, with all the athletes from the Canottieri Moto Guzzi club (Trincavelli, Zucchi, Balatti, Sgheiz and cox Stefanoni).
