July 2024 (G.T.) – Digital innovation moves fast, and the most evolved and competitive companies do too. When implementing new projects, dedicating time to discussions that broaden horizons is essential. The conferences organised as part of the  Digital Innovation Observatories (Polytechnic University of Milan/School of Management) every year (of which there are more than 50) are a key point of reference for the sector. At these events, teams of analysts and experts work alongside members of the top management of both Italian and international companies, exploring the landscape of Digital Innovation. The scenarios presented cover different themes, from  new technologies to  Digital Transformation processes in the various economic sectors and in the Public Administration bodies of our country.

“Use case session”: Piaggio Group on the “Cloud”. Among the key players at the recent conference (June 26) on Cloud Transformation, organised by the Digital Innovation Observatories, were Vittorio Boero (CIO & Senior Vice President of Piaggio Group), Lorenzo Mastropietro (ICT/Chief Technology Officer), and Ileana Pavia (Cloud Services Director of Engineering).

"The Cloud continues to prove that it is a valuable support in business innovation," the event description states, "and the benefits of the Cloud have now prompted even the most sceptical companies to take their first steps toward this technology...2023 has seen increasing business maturity when it comes to Cloud-related themes. To be more precise, these themes include everything from migration to optimal management, seeking to keep costs contained and improving performance and service efficiency. As such, the Cloud has emerged as a key business tool, and continues to demonstrate how it can support the competitiveness of companies. In a few words, this is what was demonstrated by the case studies of some of the leading companies that were present and the conference. Among these, was presented the project to transition the Piaggio Group's IT infrastructure to the Cloud, which is currently being implemented. Just recently, the company’s websites were moved to the Microsoft Azure Cloud, and in the next few months, the plan is to migrate other application environments and business systems (such as Engineering PLM, SAP ERP, among others).

The journey towards the “Cloud”: the various steps.

The fundamental question. The Cloud has become a fundamental technology in enabling the digital transformation. The CIO of Piaggio Group was asked, “What were your main needs and what where your key drivers in choosing to initiate this process?”, and Vittorio Boero gave the following response: “Our model of reference receives the input from the company: as such, the choice was not purely technologically-motivated within the world of ICT; rather, we embraced the opportunities, needs and constraints expressed - including, to name a few, the demand for greater speed, flexibility, reduced time-to-market, and the need to introduce increasing levels of innovation with different reaction speeds than in previous years.” He continued: “We asked ourselves how we could support this change and how we could facilitate it in real, concrete terms, from a technological perspective.” To respond, then, to the change desired by the company, the reasoning focused on opportunities to migrate to the Cloud: a path that began in 2022, with the project launch at the end of 2023. “As of mid-June 2024”, concluded Boero, “we are about a third of the way through the project, which will continue this year and into 2025.”

The project currently under way within Piaggio Group, to support the business. “The strategy for implementation will see the completion of various waves”, explains Lorenzo Mastropietro (ICT-Chief Technology Officer for Piaggio Group), “with the purpose to moving applications to the perimeter in homogeneous groups (bundles), minimising the risks to the business."
