LIMITED EDITION:
VESPA SETTANTESIMO

WITH MORE THAN 18 MILLION SCOOTERS SOLD AROUND THE WORLD, VESPA OFFERS A CELEBRATORY TWO-WHEELER TO MARK ITS FIRST 70 YEARS. AN IRRESISTIBLE LIMITED EDITION – AVAILABLE IN THREE MODELS: GTS, PRIMAVERA, PX – TO ENHANCE THE INIMITABLE ELEGANCE THAT HAVE MADE THE VESPA THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE SCOOTER
Vespa 70 Special Edition

(From Eicma, Moto.it video, showing the new Vespa 70 range)

To celebrate a legend that has united entire nations and generations, the young and dynamic Vespa Primavera, the larger and more powerful Vespa GTS and the timeless Vespa PX have been given an exclusive personalisation treatment.
It was 1946 when the first Vespa scooter left the Pontedera factory. On the seventieth anniversary of that historic moment, the Piaggio Group pays special tribute to the world's favourite scooter with a limited edition. The personalisation celebrates the history of a vehicle that has surpassed its function as an agile and cheerful means of transport to become a cult object, an exemplar of design, an icon of Italian elegance.

And so three models – the nippy little Primavera, the GTS flagship and the timeless PX – celebrate this significant milestone in 2016 with a limited edition whose exclusive colour scheme is based on the new Azzurro 70 blue, which makes its début on this unique occasion. The colour enhances the charm of a truly special edition, together with a set of personalised features that include a brand new dark brown saddle with contrasting beige piping, and a thermobonded Vespa Settantesimo logo, elegantly placed at the height of the passenger seat. The livery for all the Vespa Settantesimo models also includes special graphics on the side panels and a signature mark on the lid of the top box, while the wheel rims have been painted in an exclusive non-standard colour.

DISPLACEMENTS: 125, 150, 300. The Vespa PX has a special place in this celebration (in the classic 125 and 150cc displacements), as a timeless legend, which, thanks in part to its manual four-speed gearbox, remains a legendary and inimitable model. The Vespa’s seventieth birthday celebrations would not be complete without the Primavera, the model that best interprets the young, carefree spirit of the range and, with the introduction of ABS in the 125 and 150 engine versions, also confirms the attention to safety and continuous technological upgrades that has always been a Vespa hallmark. There is also a festive look for the large-frame Vespa GTS 300, the sportiest and most powerful model, regarded as the technological cutting edge of the Vespa family.

The Vespa Settantesimo limited edition comes with a new top box bag as a standard feature, in the same material and colour as the saddle. The bag can be transported on the rear flip-over luggage carrier, a standard feature on all the models in the Vespa Settantesimo range.

APRILIA SR 150
THE FIRST SPORT-SCOOTERBIKE FOR INDIA

PIAGGIO INDIA CREATES A NEW CATEGORY IN THE TWO-WHEELER VEHICLE SEGMENT AND PRESENTS THE FIRST SPORT-SCOOTERBIKE FOR YOUNG INDIANS. MARKET AVAILABILITY IN AUGUST 2016. TEASER VIDEO HERE

Aprilia SR 150

The new Aprilia SR 150 is addressed to young, dynamic Indians eager to experience the sensations of driving sport bikes without sacrificing the convenience of auto-matic transmission in city traffic. Innovative, agile and high-performance design, the new model will be launched on the Indian market in August 2016, manufac-tured in the cutting-edge Baramati (Maharashtra) plant of Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited (PVPL), the Piaggio Group's Indian subsidiary.

Delhi, 3 February 2016 – Today Piaggio India has reached a new milestone by un-veiling the Aprilia SR 150, the first sport-scooterbike designed for Indian young-sters. The new exclusive design of the Aprilia SR 150 is the perfect combination be-tween a scooter and a sport-bike: thanks to the gutsy 150cc engine, the large 14-inch (motorcycle-inspired) wheels and the (scooter-type) automatic transmission, a new category has been created in the expanding Indian motorised two-wheeler market.

The Aprilia SR 150 is characterised by a sporty and exuberant style, with a design that is an exemplary reflection of the racing temperament of the Aprilia brand. The front is characterised by a decidedly sporty handlebar, with the headlight assembly integrated in the fairing and a very pronounced "beak" on the front wheel, that clearly distinguishes it from other two-wheeled vehicles on the market. The large 14-inch five-spoke black alloy wheels evoke the character and sports spirit of Aprilia racing bikes, while the gutsy 150cc engine focuses on the vibrancy of a ve-hicle created to quickly move around the city without sacrificing fun and unique driving sensations. The new scooter has sports road tyres, with 220mm front disc brake and 140 mm rear drum brake.

AUTOCAR INDIA

The Aprilia SR 150 will be manufactured in the cutting-edge Baramati plant and will be launched on the Indian market in August 2016, the month of the start-up of sales. The Aprilia SR 150 is the latest Piaggio product manufactured for India with which Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of the Piaggio Group, confirms its pio-neering role, creating a new category in the Indian two-wheeler market.
Underlining the Aprilia SR 150 opportunities on the Indian market, Stefano Pelle, CEO of Piaggio India, says that PVPL is once again deeply committed to creating an entirely new category in the two-wheeler segment by presenting the new Aprilia SR 150, a model specifically designed for young Indians who will soon be able to appreciate the qualities of this innovative cross over sport-scooterbike.
The world première took place at the recent Auto Expo 2016 in Delhi, where other ex-amples of excellence of the Piaggio Group with the Vespa (with the top of the range 946 Emporio Armani), Aprilia and Moto Guzzi brands were on show. The new Aprilia SR 150 has had ample coverage in the Indian media, which has dedicated many articles and reports in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV.

THE PREMIER COMES TO PIAGGIO: THE VIDEO OF THE VISIT

Pontedera, 23 April 2016 – Today is the anniversary of the Vespa, of the day the patent for the scooter was filed: 23 April 1946. For the occasion, Italy’s Premier, Matteo Renzi, visited the Piaggio Group headquarters in Pontedera, accompanied by his wife Agnese. The guests were greeted by the company's top managers: Chairman-CEO Roberto Colaninno and Deputy Chairman Matteo Colaninno, together with Michele Colaninno (CEO and COO of the parent Immsi S.p.A., and a director of Piaggio & C. S.p.A.). The group made their way to the new vehicle showroom to see an exhibit of the complete Vespa range, from the first 98cc produced 70 years ago to the latest and equally fascinating Vespa Settantesimo models, GTS, Primavera, PX, and the 946 Emporio Armani. After speaking to the senior managers, dignitaries and company staff, the Premier looked at the Vespa scooters (revealing that his father had owned a Vespa, while he rode a Piaggio Grillo two-wheeler) and chatted with Roberto and Matteo Colaninno.

ROBERTO COLANINNO: “VESPA, THE PIAGGIO HERITAGE”
A CASE STUDY AT HARVARD AND THE MIT

“Our thanks to the Prime Minister who wanted to pay his respects to the Vespa as it celebrates its 70th birthday, although I don't think it shows its age,” said Roberto Colaninno in his opening address. “I believe the Vespa is the only mechanical product that has lasted for 70 years without changing: its design (which has evolved over the years, ed.) is still the same. This is the expression of extraordinary genius... of an object still associated today with a concept of happiness, with making beautiful things… 70 years is a long time for all of us: but not for the Vespa, which continues to grow, to enter new markets, to attract the interest of leading research centres. On this point, we have created a company in the USA (Piaggio Fast Forward, ed.) with some professors from Harvard University and with Nicholas Negroponte (founder of the MIT Media Lab, ed.), and we are in contact with a number of large companies (who work as advisors for us, such as Google and Trimble) who are interested in studying mobility 30 years from now, in other words, architecture and the roads, how we will move around, what movement will be like in major cities: In 30 years time, Shanghai will have a population of 80 million people. These are pressing and difficult issues. The driving force behind this is the Vespa, and we are also in talks with the Istituto Superiore Sant’Anna [university in Pisa], which has been similarly ‘conquered’ by the Vespa. At the centre of it all is Pontedera… which for us is the Vespa, and the Vespa is the core element, the heritage of Piaggio.”

The Chairman-CEO stressed the importance of human resources from a cultural viewpoint: “We have to make Pontedera the headquarters of a global company, with the ability to govern innovation, organisation, tests, human resources all over the world. ‘Bringing innovation’ doesn’t mean ‘exporting innovation’: it means educating people on the basis of our model, so that it is understood by people and markets wherever we go.” In Pontedera, he added, Piaggio is located in a favourable area, with cultural and historic assets, experience, innovation, technological research, the ability to attract talent. In concluding his remarks, Mr Colaninno addressed the Premier directly: “I envy you your energy... and I appeal to your energy to ensure that Italy grows with the extraordinary products it has realised and continues to realise, which are second to none. Going back to our American experience, the fact that the Vespa has captured the attention of professors at Harvard and the MIT, major corporations and research centres, means they have seen in us something that can be extremely fruitful for our future.”

MATTEO RENZI: “INNOVATION, THE HEART OF OUR TIMES.
LIKE THE VESPA, ITALY LOOKS TO THE FUTURE”

“It is a truly great pleasure to be here with you today, because as we celebrate the Vespa, it’s as if we were celebrating the entire country: the Vespa is one of those symbols familiar to the whole of Italy. Everyone has memories associated with the Vespa… it is part of our history,” said PM Matteo Renzi, remembering when his father took him to the sports field on his Vespa. In the postwar period, “the Vespa liberated people, it got Italy moving again, providing a means to overcome distances, to move around freely, it accompanied the Italians through the economic boom of the 1960s and through to today,” he added. “Over the years it has evolved, ever greater attention has been paid to its design, and today the Vespa is the worldwide leader in its sector; I went with Mr Colaninno to the factory in Vietnam where they make Vespa scooters for the Asian market, and the passion, the pride and the sense of identity and the Italian experience are just as strong there; this is not delocalisation, it is an investment for the future.”

“The anniversary of the Vespa should not be an occasion when Italians look back at the various ways that contributed to the triumph of this means of transport; in my view, it is something more exciting, because it is a challenge for the future,” observed Mr Renzi. Returning to Mr Colaninno's remarks on mobility in the future, he said: “All the top global players, not just the automobile makers, are studying innovative solutions… who will survive in this competitive scenario? Companies with the power of a brand, the desire to innovate, the quality of their men and women and the support of institutes of excellence ready to give them a hand. From this point of view, the Vespa and Piaggio in general could not be better placed.” The reference was to the important universities in Pisa (the Normale, the Sant’Anna) and to the local quality system, with its constantly evolving system of transport and infrastructures. In other words, “in this location in the province of Pisa, in the Arno Valley, a legend has developed, with the ability to compete with the top world players.” The profound significance of the challenge, therefore, is: “to develop – for tomorrow's system of transport – a tool capable of taking on the future; Mr Colaninno's remarks are extremely interesting: in a changing world, in a changing system of transport, we can be leaders, just as the Vespa is the leader in its sector, as Piaggio is the leader in the European industry and competes with the Japanese giants... what the Vespa anniversary tells us is that if we give it our best, Italy can succeed!”

(Photo: T. Barchielli, Governo.it).

And it is important, the Premier observed, to narrate a story around a product that captures the hearts of the men and women of the future: “this is what the Vespa has been doing for 70 years and what it will continue to do.” By accepting the challenge of a future geared to innovation, which is the “core of our times and offers a great opportunity to those who respond…”, just like Piaggio and the Colaninno family, which, since 2003, have been growing the company and believing in it, noted the Premier. “If we give this our full commitment, the Vespa will become an extraordinary symbol and an extraordinary metaphor for what Italy must be; on behalf of the Italian Government, I want to thank the Piaggio men and women who have made this marvellous success story possible, the Colaninno family who believe in the possibility for the Vespa to have a future, and all the Italians who look at the photos of the Vespa and experience fond memories of the past but also look eagerly forward to the future. If we can combine the memories of the past with the desire for the future,” concluded Matteo Renzi, “I am convinced Italy will be a leader in the coming years, and no one will be able to stop us. Viva la Vespa!”

In the afternoon, Premier Renzi visited the Piaggio factory, stopping at the Vespa assembly lines and in the brand new robotised paint shop (the subject of the next article). At the end of the day, Roberto and Matteo Colaninno presented the Premier with a gift: a special reproduction of the drawing of the Vespa, taken from the original patent. A small token of great significance, offered to the leader of the Italian Government, here in the Piaggio factory in Pontedera where the Vespa began life 70 years ago and has been produced without interruption ever since.

FOR THE EXHIBITION “ON THE ROAD WITH VESPA”

OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION “IN VIAGGIO CON VESPA – UN’AVVENTURA LUNGA 70 ANNI”. A SPECIAL EVENING, WITH THE PUBLIC AND A MIDNIGHT TOAST. ON THE STAGE TV JOURNALIST AND PRESENTER TIBERIO TIMPERI, WITH LUCA BRACALI AND FRANCO PATRIGNANI AND THEIR TRAVEL STORIES

L-R: the Vespa GTS 300 “Settantesimo” special edition, travellers Luca Bracali and Franco Patrignani, presenter Tiberio Timperi on a Vintage Vespa.

There was a festive mood at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera on 22 April, the day before the anniversary of the Vespa (patented on 23 April 1946), for the opening of the special exhibition dedicated to the scooter: “In viaggio con Vespa – Un’avventura lunga 70 anni”. The public turned out in large numbers for an exciting event that began with the arrival on the stage of TV presenter and journalist Tiberio Timperi riding a vintage yellow two-wheeler and wearing a modern Vespa crash helmet. The new Vespa GTS 300 ie “Settantesimo” limited edition completed the scene.

TIBERIO TIMPERI: “THE VESPA A WITNESS TO OUR HISTORY”

“How much history the Vespa has seen,” said presenter Tiberio Timperi. “From the birth of television to the development of postwar Italy, from the 1960s to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the emergence of the internet and the social media. It has been and continues to be a constant presence in our lives. Let’s show our appreciation for the workers who have been building the scooter for 70 years.” The large audience in the Auditorium together with the Mayor of Pontedera Simone Millozzi responded with enthusiastic applause (here is a video extract):

THE MAYOR SIMONE MILLOZZI

Video’s English translation: "Our region is blessed with research and technology transfer centres, with innovation, knowledge and culture: the idea is that we can still maintain our country’s traditional manufacturing system but reinvigorate it with the elements of innovation… in my view, this is the leitmotif that over the past 70 years has underpinned the development of the country and of our town.”

Tiberio continued: “We are proud to celebrate the birthday of this extraordinary vehicle, which evokes memories passed down from generation to generation: my father rode a 2-stroke Vespa, I had a 4-stroke and a PX and I hope my son will ride a Vespa, too. People who Vespa love Italy!” he exclaimed, to further applause. Among the highlights of the evening, the stories of two Vespa travellers, Luca Bracali and Franco Patrignani.

VIDEO – LUCA BRACALI: ACROSS VIETNAM ON A VESPA PRIMAVERA

Luca Bracali, photographer, director/documentary maker (he has visited 130 countries, written 7 books, won 8 international photographic awards), is one of the stars of the “In Viaggio con Vespa” exhibition with his photos and tales about his journey in Vietnam on a Vespa Primavera. Here’s his story.

LUCA BRACALI - ON THE ROAD WITH VESPA

Video’s English translation: “My love for the Vespa, the Primavera, and specifically the 125 Primavera ET3, began when I was 15. Thirty-five years later I was able to choose my 125 Primavera at the Vinh Phuc factory in Vietnam and start off on my adventure. I went to visit one of the world’s most extraordinary countries in terms of scenery, culture and ethnic groups. I rode more than 2000 km on my 125 Primavera. I left from Hanoi to go to the great Sapa rice fields, then I went down to Halong Bay and from there to Hoi An and into the old city centre, which is inaccessible for anyone but not for my Vespa. Then I went further south to see the floating market in Can Tho, where I loaded the Vespa on to a barge. From there I started the final stage of the journey, in the Mekong delta, where I had a close encounter with a 35 kg 3.5 metre long python, which put some weight into the adventure. Together with the Vespa, riding through unmistakeably oriental landscapes, I felt the aroma and value of freedom, the freedom that my Vespa stands for.”

VIDEO – FRANCO PATRIGNANI: IN THE STATES, IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER ROBERTO

Two years ago, architect Franco Patrignani (a municipal councillor in Mandello del Lario) made a coast-to-coast trip across the USA, from New York to California, on a Vespa GTS 300. It was a great way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a trip made in 1964 by his father Roberto Patrignani, from Milan to Tokyo on a blue Vespa 150, recalled in the exhibition “In viaggio con Vespa” and in this clip by his son Franco.

FRANCO PATRIGNANI - ON THE ROAD WITH VESPA

Video’s English translation: “Ciao everyone, I’m Franco Patrignani, I’m here to talk about a coast-to-coast trip I made in the USA from New York to Los Angeles, in 2014, with a model identical to this one, a wonderful Vespa Piaggio, with a 300 cc engine. Why did I decide to make the trip? Because exactly 50 years earlier, in 1964, my dad undertook a solo journey, an epic ride, from Milan to Tokyo, on the occasion of the 1964 Olympics, also on a Vespa, a 150. He rode through some incredible places, like Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, deserts, and with just a stand, a camera and a tent to sleep in. So it felt right to make a special trip to remember that great adventure. The coast-to-coast was a unique experience for me, and it seemed to be the right way to pay tribute to my father’s ride.”

TRAVELLING…WITH A LEGEND

The Piaggio Foundation is marking the 70th anniversary of the Vespa with an exhibition looking at one of the most fascinating and evocative elements in the history of the world’s most popular scooter, a vehicle that has attracted increasing numbers of enthusiasts ever since the first model left the production lines: travel.

ON THE ROAD WITH VESPA – A 70-YEARS LONG ADVENTURE
THE EXHIBITION

Launched in the postwar period as an individual means of transport to get an entire country moving again, over the years the Vespa has built up a reputation as a symbol of freedom and travel. An inseparable companion for days out in the rapidly changing society of the 1950s and of the rites of passage of more than one generation of youngsters (a mark of both distinction and emancipation), the Vespa has always been the intrepid protagonist of the adventures of countless travellers of many different nationalities, some of whom undertook expeditions on their two-wheelers that captured the imagination of many. They too are the subject of the exhibition, whose gallery of extraordinary characters is by no means exhaustive given the huge number of adventurous Vespa devotees around the world.

The Vespa is the ideal means of transport to see the world in freedom, thanks to its extreme ridability, reliability and easy customisation. Every trip on a Vespa turns into a unique, original adventure, driven equally by insatiable curiosity and the longing to eat up the miles in carefree style. So thanks in part to these travellers, the Vespa has ridden and continues to ride down the roads of the world, winning the admiration of millions of people and strengthening the strong sense of belonging to a growing community of enthusiastic globetrotters.
The exhibition “In viaggio con Vespa – Un’avventura lunga 70 anni” is on show at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera (Pisa) until 4 June 2016 (entrance is free). A visit to the exhibition is also an opportunity to see a company museum that houses an extraordinary collection of vintage vehicles. Take a look at this clip:

INTERNATIONAL VESPA RALLY
TO CELEBRATE THE SCOOTER'S 70TH

70TH VESPA – INTERNATIONAL MEETING

Not even a cheeky downpour stopped the hundreds of Vespa riders and devotees who arrived in the Tuscan town of Pontedera from across Italy and farther afield, for the three days of festivities celebrating the seventieth anniversary of the Vespa. After the preview event on 22 April with the opening of the exhibition “In Viaggio con Vespa – Un’avventura lunga 70 anni” at the Piaggio Museum (see the report in the previous article), from 23 to 25 April the Vespa's hometown hosted a rich program of activities. Guided tours of the Piaggio factory and the Museum, music, tours on the Vespa (around Pisa and the Valdera hills), a photo exhibition, gymkhanas and prizes, notably an exclusive Vespa PX “Super Cau” special edition (won by Mauro Boschi from the Vespa Club Valdelsa).

Organisers: Vespa Club of Pontedera, Municipality of Pontedera, Valdera Unione dei Comuni, Città dei Motori. Plus, a special postmark issued to mark the Vespa’s 70 years.
Many other celebrations and Vespa rallies took place all over Italy and abroad: we’ll be reporting on them in the next issue of Wide.

MINI TOUR IN THE VESPA FACTORY

An exceptional opportunity for enthusiasts to visit the Piaggio Group two-wheeler factory in Pontedera: a guided tour of the scooter assembly lines, aboard a little train, included a look at the innovative area where the top-of-the-range 946 Emporio Armani scooter is produced.

RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS AT THE PIAGGIO MUSEUM

A few figures, supplied by the president of the Piaggio Foundation, Riccardo Costagliola: “On Sunday 24 April, the Piaggio Museum welcomed a record number of almost 6,000 visitors. In addition to around 1,000 members of the Italian and international Vespa clubs who took part in the rally (and their companions), crowds of fans came to see the collections of vintage and contemporary vehicles and the ‘In viaggio con Vespa’ exhibition. There was a large turnout of dignitaries and public for the exhibition opening on Friday 22 April, and altogether, from the evening of the 22 to the evening of the 25, we had nearly 10,000 visitors. The 2016 visitor log shows an impressive 80% increase in numbers compared with 2015. Clearly, the events for the Vespa’s 70th anniversary fuelled an extraordinary turnout; even so, the growing appeal of the Piaggio Museum and intensive program of conferences, exhibitions and events planned for the coming months should see the strong growth reported since the beginning of the year continue.”

AT THE 2016 VIETNAM MOTORCYCLE SHOW

The 2016 Vietnam Motorcycle Show (from 7 to 10 April), organised by the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers on the theme “Ride High! A double event was organised in Hanoi on 17 March 2016 for the presentation of the new Piaggio Medley to the press and to the dealer network, in the central hotel Lotte in the Vietnamese capital. There was a large media turnout, with press journalists and the main national TV networks.

The press conference was held in the morning, ending with demonstrations of the ABS system and test rides through the city streets. The dealer convention took place that afternoon, in the same location, attended by about 150 dealers.

Anniversary
70 YEARS OF HISTORY

THE VESPA PHENOMENON
FROM INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT TO UNIVERSAL ICON

Image taken from the cover of the April 2016 issue, no. 7, of “Scooters & Style Magazine”, France.

The Vespa truly is a phenomenon, not just a successful industrial product that has achieved worldwide popularity. For decades, it has also been a protagonist in lifestyle, mobility, design, communication and cinema (not to mention songs, comics, TV commercials): more than a scooter, it is an acknowledged style icon that stands for a whole world of values geared to freedom, travel, fashion, creativity, Italian chic. In the last 70 years (Piaggio filed the patent for the scooter on 23 April 1946) and with more than 18 million scooters on the world's roads, the Vespa has put the world into “a new gear”, uniting young people from many different cultures.

The first truly global mobility milestone, the Vespa is a trait d’union among the generations that interacts with socially diverse environments, generating a variety of cultural trends in lifestyles, music, among young people. It has accompanied people and countries as they have grown and developed, ever since travel first meant emancipation and then became a universal right. Today the Vespa continues to invite people to travel, to explore, to communicate.

As it celebrates this important birthday, the Vespa is experiencing one of the most successful periods in its long life. Since 2004, when 58,000 scooters were produced, the Vespa brand has experienced remarkable growth. Production reached 100,000 in 2006, and almost 170,000 in 2015. In the space of ten years, Vespa production has tripled, with one and a half million new scooters starting out on the world's roads. Today more than ever, Vespa is a global brand, a true citizen of the world, produced in three different factories: Pontedera (in Tuscany, Italy), where the Vespa has been manufactured continuously since 1946 and shipped to Europe and Western markets including the Americas; Vinh Phuc, Vietnam, for the local market and the Far East; and India, in the state-of-the-art Baramati facility, which produces Vespa scooters for the Indian market.

THE VESPA TODAY: AN ADVANCED RANGE. Over the years, the Vespa has always stood for cutting-edge technology. With its highly advanced load-bearing frame built entirely in steel, the Vespa was a watershed in personal mobility. Today’s Vespa scooters, featuring latest-generation engines and technical support solutions, are a stylistic synthesis of an evolution that has made the Vespa design an immortal icon of Italian chic all over the world.

Vespa Primavera. Young, innovative, technologically advanced, agile and dynamic, a friend of the environment, the Vespa Primavera (in 50, 125 and 150cc displacements) is totally of its time, with all the freshness and joie de vivre that distinguish a model that is a legend in the Vespa family tree. Available with state-of-the-art 50, 125 and 150cc engines, the Vespa Primavera also features ABS braking.

The Vespa Sprint carries on the tradition of vitality and youthfulness. This scooter is an evolution of the Vespa Primavera project for youngsters of all ages, enhancing the sporty characteristics that its legendary name evokes. A small, lightweight all-steel body that is comfortable and protective, the Vespa Sprint is distinguished by its youthful lines and robust rectangular headlamp. Its large 12” wheels feature impressive aluminium alloy rims. The Sprint deploys the same engines as the Vespa Primavera and, with the emphasis on safety, comes with ABS braking.

The Vespa GTS, known as the "Vespone" because of its large body, is the fastest, sportiest and most entertaining scooter in the Vespa range, perfect for city traffic thanks to its manageability and the performance of its 4-stroke liquid-cooled 125 and 300cc engines, but also for riding out into the countryside, solo or two-up. The new GTS range consisting of the Vespa GTS, GTS Super, GTS SuperSport and Touring, offers refined new style details, an enhanced modern set of standard features, including ABS braking and ASR traction control, a Piaggio Group technology exclusive, which helps make the Vespa GTS safer and fun to ride in all conditions.

Vespa 946 Emporio Armani. In 2015 – the 40th anniversary of the Giorgio Armani company and 130th anniversary of the Piaggio Group – Giorgio Armani designed the new version of the Vespa 946, the exclusive model whose name refers to the original year of the scooter that has become a world-famous icon and whose lines are a modern interpretation of the original Vespa style.

The Vespa 946 Emporio Armani is a synonym not only for style but also for technology: the aluminium engine blocks and the electronic riding management system (including communication with latest-generation internet devices) combine with an innovative four-stroke injection engine designed to minimise fuel consumption and emissions. The dual disk brake, twin-channel ABS braking system and large 12” wheels ensure maximum road safety.

Vespa PX. Inimitable style, engines that comply with the most stringent anti-emissions regulations and a classic four-speed gear change make the Vespa PX unique and unmistakable. The aesthetic of its essential, minimalist lines, its functionality and ease of use, the iconic kick-starter, the legendary robustness of the steel body, the reliability of a simple, indestructible engine, the (habit-forming) possibility to mount a spare wheel: launched in 1977, the Vespa PX still retains all the traditional strengths that have ensured its success for almost forty years.

Vespa Settantesimo. In 2016, a limited edition marks the first 70 years of a universal legend. The celebration Vespa is a luxury model that enhances the inimitable elegance that has made it the world’s most famous scooter. To celebrate a legend that has accompanied entire populations and generations, the youthful and dynamic Vespa Primavera, the powerful large-frame Vespa GTS, and the timeless Vespa PX form an edition with an exclusive chromatic look based on two new colours schemes: Azzurro 70 blue and Grigio 70 grey, special colour schemes that draw on the best Vespa tradition and make their debut for this unique occasion. Both colour schemes enhance and highlight the charm of the Vespa design, distilling seven decades of stylistic evolution.

The Vespa Settantesimo range is also made truly special by a series of customised features, including a brand new and elegant dark brown saddle, finished with contrasting beige piping and a thermobonded Vespa Settantesimo logo, placed at the height of the passenger seat. The livery for all the Vespa Settantesimo models also features special graphics on the leg shield back plate, while the wheels have a “dark” finish thanks to a specific, non-standard paint. Completing the fittings, a classic chrome-plated rear luggage rack (a Vespa icon) holds an elegant bag, colour coded to match the saddle and stamped with the seventieth anniversary logo.

CORRADINO D’ASCANIO:
TRUE GENIUS!

AN OUTSTANDING ENGINEER AND INVENTOR, HE CREATED THE MOTHER OF ALL SCOOTERS: THE VESPA, DESIGNED FOR COMFORT AND EASY RIDING

D’Ascanio drawing the Vespa, beneath a seated man. Frames from Istituto Luce archive footage.

VIDEO: D’ASCANIO DRAWS THE VESPA

In the video’s English translation, Corradino d’Ascanio provides a running commentary on his drawing of the Vespa scooter: “I put a mudguard below the seat to cover the wheel…I aligned the steering column with the front wheel, automatically the scooter takes shape. Another new feature was to provide wheels that could be taken off, not in the same way as normal motorcycle wheels (which are mounted on a fork with a cross axle, so if you have a puncture you have pull out the axle, dismantle and remove the wheel). Whereas here the system is similar to that widely used on aeroplane undercarriages, where the wheels are cantilevered, so they can be taken off, as easily as on an automobile.”

The pre-production prototype of the Vespa 98cc, designed by Corradino d'Ascanio, 1945

“Dreams must never be allowed to die,” Corradino d’Ascanio (Popoli, Abruzzo, 1 February 1891-Pisa, 5 August 1981) wrote to his children. A visionary and prolific engineer from Italy’s Abruzzo region, he himself had countless dreams. Those he achieved – such as the modern helicopter and the Vespa scooter – are regarded as milestones in Italy’s industrial history. D’Ascanio was a remarkable character, tenacious and highly gifted, who led an adventurous life marked by success and sacrifice. His career had a difficult start: to keep his family, he designed anything (an oven, a town square, a war memorial). In 1906, at the age of fifteen, just three years after the Wright brothers’ first flight, he designed and built a sort of hang glider from bedsheets, for experimental flights, managing to travel a distance of 15 metres. From 1918 to 1919, he tried his luck in America, where he designed small aircraft fitted with motorcycle engines and set up a company with Ugo Venerio D’Annunzio, the son of the celebrated Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. But the American adventure failed to make headway.

L-R: Enrico Piaggio and Corradino d’Ascanio, 1940

Back in Italy, d’Ascanio devoted himself to a “vertical flying machine”, aka the helicopter. In 1930, his third prototype, the DAT3, commissioned by the Italian Air Force, proved successful, setting international records for duration, distance and altitude that would remain unbeaten for years. In 1932, d’Ascanio began a long-term collaboration with the Piaggio company (active at the time in aeronautics), where he worked mainly on aircraft. From 1937 to 1961, he was a lecturer at the Engineering Faculty of Pisa University, where he taught Machine Drawing and Design.

A page from the patent for the 98cc “motor scooter”, the Vespa.

D’Ascanio’s extensive collection of vehicles, patents and technical drawings offer an insight into the origins of the creative genius that led to the Vespa patent and the beginning of the extraordinary success of one of the symbols of Italian industry and creativity, famous all over the world. Since that first scooter, the “98” patented on 23 April 1946, more than 18 million Vespas have been produced, for customers in every continent.

The first Vespa 98cc to go into production, 1946

The story has been told many times. The war was not yet over, but entrepreneur Enrico Piaggio was already thinking about reconstruction and production conversion back to peacetime work: he had an idea for a small, simple, low-cost, fuel-efficient vehicle for individual mobility, that everyone could ride on the country’s war-wrecked roads. Corradino d’Ascanio (who was not a fan of the motorcycle) went to his drawing board and, starting from a prototype nicknamed Paperino or Donald Duck, designed a completely new vehicle with a load-bearing body (an innovative advance at the time, which would be embraced by automobile makers only years later), a direct-drive system and the gear change on the handlebar for easy riding. The scooter body was in metal, the only one of its type in the world. D’Ascanio presented his prototype, the “MP6”, in 1945 and the final version, which conquered Enrico Piaggio, in 1946. This was the start of a huge industrial and commercial success that continues today, 70 years later.

Left, d’Ascanio with the millionth Vespa to leave the production lines (April 1956); right, with the Vespa racing riders at the Perugia Cup (September 1950).

The unstoppable engineer was the author of many other inventions and the most original and bizarre stands for exhibitions at which the Vespa was shown. His astonishing creations include the Vespa on a branch of peach blossom, on a tightrope and on a tapis-roulant, or held up by dummies. D’Ascanio, a true genius!

ADVENTURE MEMORIES

HEROIC VESPA:
RECORDS AND RALLIES AROUND THE WORLD

(Photo courtesy: Giorgio Serafino, Giuliana Foresi).

The Vespa has enjoyed an important racing career and is the protagonist of many legendary journeys. In the 1950s, Vespa scooters were successful entrants in countless official motorcycling events throughout Europe (speed and cross-country trials). The Vespa was also the star player of other unusual “adventures”. In 1952 Frenchman Georges Monneret built an “amphibian” Vespa for the Paris-London race, with which he successfully crossed the Channel. 1949 saw the construction of the Vespa 125 Corsa, whose frame was in the aluminium alloy used to build aircraft and assembled with rivets, also in alloy, a technologically advanced solution at the time. The enlarged fuel tank elongated towards the handlebar provided greater capacity for optimised riding at top speed.

The Vespa 125 Corsa took part in many local races and secured a series of important victories. In 1950 Giuseppe Cau and Dino Mazzoncini took first and second place in the Bologna Grand Prix. The same year, Giuseppe Cau also won the Perugia Race, riding Vespa 125 Corsa n. 38.

On 7 April 1950, on the Montlhery race track in France, in a ten-hour event with three riders alternating on the scooter, the Vespa broke 17 world records, including speed (an average of 134 km/h), the 100 miles (average 129.7 km/h), the 500 miles (average 123.9 km/h), the 1,000 km (average 124.3 km/h) and the 10 hours, covering a distance of 1,049 km.

In 1951 Piaggio developed a Vespa 125cc prototype for speed trials, and set the world speed record.

This highly original 125, the “Vespa Siluro”, was ridden at top speed by tester Dino Mazzoncini on the Rome-Ostia motorway, and set a new record with a time of 21 seconds and 4 hundredths at an average speed of 171.1 km/h. An excellent result, especially considering that a motorway has a much more uneven surface than a race track.

The engine was designed by Corradino d’Ascanio, who described it as follows: “I also designed a racing scooter with a 125cc two-stroke water-cooled boxer engine; with this engine, which delivered 17 HP at 10,000 revs, our test rider Mazzoncini set the record in the 170 km/h category.” (Corradino d’Ascanio, Appunti sulla mia attività tecnica dal 1928, Piaggio Archives). It was 1951. That same year, the Vespa achieved enormous success in the Varese “Sei Giorni Internazionale”, winning 9 gold medals, more than any other Italian two-wheeler.

1951 also witnessed the first in a countless series of Vespa rallies: an expedition to Congo, an incredible trip with a scooter designed essentially for city traffic. Italian university student Giancarlo Tironi rode to the Arctic Circle on a Vespa. Argentinian Carlos Velez crossed the Andes from Buenos Aires to Santiago. Year after year, the Vespa’s popularity grew among travel-adventure lovers: Italian journalist Roberto Patrignani rode a Vespa from Milan to Tokyo (1964).

Soren Nielsen went to Greenland; James P. Owen rode from the USA to Tierra del Fuego; Santiago Guillen and Antonio Veciana travelled from Madrid to Athens in 1962 (their Vespa, which was decorated personally for the occasion by Salvador Dalì, can still be seen in the Piaggio Museum).

Wally Bergen completed a grand tour of the Antilles; Italians Valenti and Rivadulla rode around Spain; Miss Warral made a round trip from London to Australia; Australian Geoff Dean completed a round-the-world trip on his Vespa. Pierre Delliere, a sergeant in the French air force, reached Saigon in 51 days from Paris, travelling via Afghanistan. From Switzerland, Giuseppe Morandi rode 6,000 km, most of it in the African desert, on a Vespa he had bought in 1948. Ennio Carrega undertook a trip from Genoa to Lapland and back in just 12 days. Two Danish journalists, brother and sister Erik and Elizabeth Thrane, went to Bombay on a Vespa. And it is impossible to keep count of the Vespa riders from all over Europe and the world who have made the “legendary” journey to the North Cape.

In 1980, two Vespa PX 200E scooters reached the finishing line of the Paris-Dakar (the second edition of the classic desert race), ridden by M. Simonot and B. Tcherniawsky. The French team, organised by Jean-François Piot, was assisted by four-times 24-Hour Le Mans winner Henri Pescarolo. The Vespa continued to travel: In July 1992, writer and journalist Giorgio Bettinelli set off from Rome on a Vespa and reached Saigon in March 1993. In 1994-95, again on a Vespa, he covered the 36,000 km from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. In 1995-96, starting from Melbourne in Australia, Bettinelli travelled to Cape Town, riding more than 52,000 km in twelve months. In 1997, he completed a trip from Chile to Tasmania, via the Americas, Siberia, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, riding 144,000 km in three years and eight months and passing through 90 countries. All told, he clocked up 250,000 kilometres.

And for decades, thousands of riders from every corner of the globe have been jumping on their Vespa scooters, compelled by an irresistible urge to go… and see what lies beyond the horizon.

INTERVIEW
Polaroid Instant Artist

MAURIZIO GALIMBERTI
AND HIS "JOHNNY DEPP VESPA"

HAS REINVENTED THE "PHOTO MOSAIC" TECHNIQUE, BECOMING OFFICIAL PORTRAIT ARTIST AT THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL. HE IS FAMOUS FOR HIS SHOTS OF CELEBRITIES WITH A POLAROID WORLDWIDE. AND THOSE OF ACTOR JOHNNY DEPP THAT GAINED THE COVER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS TIME MAGAZINE NOW DECORATE HIS VESPA. AS HE NARRATES IN THIS INTERVIEW

The cover of Time Magazine with the portrait of Johnny Depp by Maurizio Galimberti

The Vespa, as is well known, has always irresistibly attracted artists. A global icon of style and design, inspiring creativity at all latitudes. Also Maurizio Galimberti, class of 1956, born in Como and who has long been living and working in Milan, succumbed to its fascination. An internationally renowned artist-photographer, from Italy to Singapore, from Europe to the States; official testimonial of Polaroid film, was called the "Polaroid Instant Artist". As part of his artistic research, he reinvented the "photo mosaic" technique starting with portraits of great personalities, such as Carla Fracci and Mimmo Rotella, which are characterised by rhythm and movement, with the faces broken down into details to grasp their sincerity and then recomposed in order to restore their uniqueness. The popularity and success with which his representations of faces were greeted led him to participate as official portrait artist at the Venice Film Festival. In 1999 he was indicated by the Italian magazine "CLASS" as the first Italian photographer-portrait artist. His portrait of Johnny Depp, made during the 2003 edition of the Venice Film Festival, was chosen as the image for the cover of the September issue of the prestigious Time Magazine.

From the left: Maurizio Galimberti photographing George Clooney and next to Johnny Depp

The "mosaic" became his favourite technique to portray not only faces, but also landscapes, architecture and cities. His works were translated into prestigious books and exhibitions and are part of important photography collections.
In the vast gallery of his now famous portraits are international stars such as Lady Gaga, Robert de Niro, Sting, George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones, as well as the Italian celebrities such as Dario Argento, Ambra, Laura Chiatti, Luca Zingaretti, Nancy Brilli, Toni Servillo and dozens of others.

HOW DID THE IDEA OF DECORATING THE LIVERY OF YOUR VESPA WITH THE IMAGES OF THE FACE OF JOHNNY DEPP COME ABOUT?
“The idea of decorating the legendary Vespa stems from my two obsessions: that for Vespa, which I have always had, and that for my portrait of Johnny Depp, that I consider one of my most important works”.

CAN YOU IN SUMMARY REVEAL THE PROCEDURE FOLLOWED FOR ITS IMPLEMENTATION?
“For the implementation I relied on Spazio 81 of Milan, a very high-quality printing workshop. Spazio 81, in addition to having done everything to perfection, because art requires perfection, is also an enthusiast of my off camera activity”.

AND NOW, WITH THIS "UNIQUE" VESPA, DO YOU RIDE THROUGH THE STREETS OF MILAN OR HAVE YOU GIVEN IT TO AN EXHIBITION OF SOME KIND?
“This Vespa is intended for daily exhibition. The biggest exhibition possible, riding among the people with my dreams and my obsessions on display!”.

WHAT IS YOU RELATIONSHIP WITH VESPA? IT IS CLEAR THAT FOR AN ARTIST LIKE YOU IT IS NOT JUST A MEANS OF TRANSPORT...
“I have always loved and 'eaten' Vespa. It's an old, eternal relationship, which has always existed".

IS IT THE FIRST “OBJECT” THAT YOU HAVE TRANSFORMED INTO A … “MOBILE” PORTRAIT?
“No. In 2006, again my work of Johnny Depp, become a mobile portrait on a Fiat Doblò commercial vehicle. You can still see that mobile portrait today on the streets of Brianza”.

YOUR WORKS ALSO FEATURE "PRODUCTS" SUCH AS CARS AND CHAMPAGNE. WHEN WILL WE SEE A PHOTO MOSAIC OF THE VESPA?
“When Piaggio comes and asks me, I'm ready!”.

ON THE ROAD
SLOW TRAVELLING ON A MOPED/ONE

FROM MONZA TO BARCELONA ON A CIAO
VIA THE CAMARGUE, THE PYRENEES AND THE RAMBLAS

TWO VESPA FRIENDS, ANDREA AND GIORGIO, AND A CHALLENGE: TO GO TO SPAIN ON TWO ORIGINAL PIAGGIO MOPEDS, A CIAO AND A BRAVO. 1,200 KILOMETRES IN A WEEK PACKED WITH EMOTIONS

Two friends from the Agrate Brianza Vespa Club, Andrea Nasisi, 35, and Giorgio Fumagalli, 53, have a nice story to tell. Andrea relates their adventure: “I had the idea during an evening out with friends, when we started talking about two-wheeler travel. It's easy with a medium-high displacement, but the real challenge is when you're riding a 50cc, we said. It was typical reasoning for a Vespa ‘purist’: I’m a devotee and own a 50 Special, a 50 N and an LX, although my favourite model is the 200 Rally. So naturally I said: let’s see what it would be like to ride to Barcelona on a Ciao! Want to bet? So we made a bet, to everyone’s amusement and surprise, but by then I had decided to accept the challenge and began making preparations for the trip that summer. Then a friend, Giorgio Fumagalli, another long-standing Vespa fan and great traveller, joined me on the adventure.” So Andrea and Giorgio bought two Piaggio mopeds from friends: a Ciao and a Bravo, “complete originals... otherwise the point of the journey would have been lost!” Which was to make a slow trip to explore less well-known places and itineraries.

THE STAGES OF THE JOURNEY: FROM SANREMO TO THE MONTECARLO CIRCUIT

“We left on 1 August from the Villa Reale in Monza, crossed the Giovi pass and in the late afternoon reached Savona, where we stopped for the night. The first day wasn’t exactly typical summer weather, we got soaked! The second day was one the best of the whole trip. We rode the Ligurian stretch of the Aurelia highway, stopping at the historic Piaggio factory, taking a photo a the Ariston theatre in Sanremo, then, as proud Brianza natives from the Vespa Club Agrate Brianza and enthusiastic Monza fans, we had to stop in Montecarlo, where we rode the city's world-famous Formula One circuit on our mopeds; it was a wonderful experience!

Then we went on to Nice and the splendid resort of Antibes, where we stayed overnight. On the third day, we covered a shorter stretch, from Antibes to Cassis, the ‘French Portofino’, a stunning location 10 km from Marseilles. During the day, we saw Cannes and the Croisette, Saint Tropez, Provence, Toulon, and then decided to stop in the elegant resort of Cassis.”

FROM THE CAMARGUE TO THE “RAMBLAS”

“The fourth day was very long and tiring, from Cassis to Cap d'Agde: we set off pedalling and reached Marseilles, then rode on to the Camargue, a wonderful nature reserve with salt pans and the Camargue cattle and horses, a fascinating exploration of nature between sea and land. It was evening when we stopped, by which time everywhere was full and the campsites were closed. We thought we’d have to sleep on the beach, but luckily the owner of a bar found us a place for the night, telling us to park our mopeds in a cellar. Merci, madame! On the 5th day, we decided to keep things short, and to stop in Catalana di Portbou as soon as we crossed the Spanish border.

We had a small mishap when Giorgio's Bravo had a puncture, but otherwise it was a good day even if we had to pedal to help our trusty two-wheel companions up the Pyrenees. We took a ritual photo by the abandoned customs barrier, and then rode on to the beautiful bay! That was a special day, it was my birthday... an excellent dinner and great hospitality.”

“On day 6 we reached our destination: Barcelona, much to the astonishment of the passers-by seeing us on our small Italian mopeds. We visited the capital’s stunning monuments and sampled some of the local specialities along La Rambla. We took a boat for the return journey because we were pressed for time, but we have plans for many other trips on our faithful Piaggio mopeds.”

Where will you be going next? “Sicily, again on the Ciao, we've got a real taste for it now. And then perhaps we’ll take part in the extreme Kristal Rally – my lifelong ambition – with an Ape 50. Can you imagine going all the way to Norway in an Ape?”

SLOW TRAVELLING ON A MOPED/TWO

PREVIEW OF FORTHCOMING CIAO JOURNEYS:
RE-EVOCATION OF A TOUR FROM 40 YEARS AGO

IN JUNE: 40TH SESTO SAN GIOVANNI-RAIANO

To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their trip on Piaggio Ciao mopeds from Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) to Raiano (Aquila), a group of Italian friends have organised a repeat tour. From 1 to 9 June, they will be back on the saddles of their Ciao mopeds, which they have carefully restored and serviced for the ride, a 1,500 km round trip to central Italy.

Riders and two-wheelers still have the same youthful spirit from 40 years ago, and the desire to re-discover places, faces and emotions. This is the great thing about slow travel, a growing trend in and outside Italy. So buon viaggio to the group of “fearless mopeds”! The next issue of Wide will feature a report.

L-R: the group of riders on their Ciao mopeds in 1976; the team today, ready to repeat their adventure. New entry Nadia is a great Ciao rider, who rode all the way round the coast of Corsica.

THE CHAMPIONS
OF CORPORATE BUSINESS

VESPA, PIAGGIO LIBERTY AND FLY ARE THE FAVOURITE MODELS OF LARGE CORPORATE CLIENTS FOR THEIR VEHICLE FLEETS. BELOW, A ROUND-UP OF THE LATEST BEST PRACTICES IN EUROPE

SPAIN: 1,300 SCOOTERS FOR “BROKERS BIKE”

A formidable fleet of 1,300 scooters – Vespa Primavera 125, Piaggio Liberty 125, Piaggio Fly 125 – has been bought by “Brokers Bike”, one of the largest brokers in the Spanish vehicle rental business. Brokers Bike has purchased the scooters from the Piaggio Group for subsequent distribution to rental companies throughout Spain. So Spaniards and tourists can choose the world’s coolest scooter, the Vespa, or a nippy Liberty or Fly two-wheeler to discover the country’s most fascinating places.

PIAGGIO LIBERTY FOR THE HUNGARIAN POST OFFICE

In order to expand and upgrade its vehicle fleet, the Hungarian Post Office – “Magyar Posta Zrt.” – has chosen the industry best seller: the nimble Piaggio Liberty, delivery version, customised with a capacious 70 lt rear top box and a front luggage carrier, in a livery with the Post Office colours and logos. The customer is handled by Netmoto Kft, the main dealer of the Piaggio Group’s Hungarian importer, Marinat SRO. The Liberty scooters (156 vehicles, in 50 cc and 125 cc versions) are used for postal deliveries on urban and non-urban routes. And the “new entry” is the cover story in the official magazine of the Hungarian Post Office.

UK: FLY, MP3, YOURBAN AND APRILIA SRV FOR “SCOOTERISED LIMITED”

Britain’s “Scooterised Limited” specialises in delivering goods to industrial users, and makes wide use of two-wheelers, which are faster and easier to manage, especially in city traffic. The company has added 105 new vehicles to its fleet: Piaggio Fly 125 3V and the Piaggio MP3 Yourban, MP3 300 LT Business and Aprilia 850 SRV maxi scooters.

GERMANY: VESPA AND MP3 FOR RENTAL

“KBS Motors” GMBH, a rental company based in Frankfurt, has bought 100 vehicles from the Piaggio Group – Vespa and MP3 scooters – for long- or short-term rental to individual or corporate customers. Its extensive fleet also includes Aprilia and Gilera scooters.

UK: FLY SCOOTERS FOR TRANSPORT IN SHEFFIELD

The Piaggio Group has delivered 38 Fly 125 3V scooters to the “Sheffield Community Transport Company”, a private transport operator in the Sheffield area (northern England) with a fleet of coaches, minibuses and scooters: an integrated system of vehicles providing cost-effective solutions for commuters, especially people living in areas with infrequent public transport services. The new scooters are used in villages, towns and cities.

SPAIN: LIBERTY FOR MAINTENANCE SERVICES

In Spain, the Ciao Motors dealer has sold 25 Piaggio Liberty 50cc scooters, delivery version, to the “Duplex Mantenimientos” company, a lift maintenance service provider. Duplex Mantenimientos’ engineers travel around on the Liberty Delivery two-wheelers, using the roomy rear top box to store their tools. The nippy Piaggio Liberty is an excellent substitute for automobiles: it moves faster through traffic and can be parked more easily. It also costs less to buy, and maintenance and fuel costs are lower than those of a four-wheel vehicle. So time and money are saved, to the benefit of productivity and earnings.

The international “EuroApe 2016” rally (23-24 April 2016), organised by Ape Club d’Italia – which is celebrating 10 years of activity – and the Municipality of Mondaino (province of Rimini), in partnership with Piaggio Veicoli Commerciali and Vespa World Club, was a great success.

EUROAPE 2016

The little cargo van, developed in 1948 as an offshoot of the Vespa, has always been a cheerful and tireless worker: over the years it has also been used as a “leisure” vehicle, capturing the interest of growing numbers of youngsters, devotees and collectors. EuroApe offers the opportunity for a full immersion in Ape-mania, in a friendly carefree setting.

The packed program for the two-day event dedicated to the Piaggio Ape attracted participants and vehicles from all over Italy and abroad (notably Germany and Austria): it was attended by more than one hundred Ape vans, modern and vintage, tuning and racing prototypes, with a corollary of smart white Ape Calessino vans (used in Rai1’s “Road Italy” television program).

At the event: Ape Village (meeting point in the main square of Mondaino); Ape Palio, with teams engaged in a new version of crossbow tournaments, on the “saddle” of metallic steeds, with parades of figures of medieval costumes; Ape Tour&Classic, to explore the town and its surroundings, with expeditions to local historical sites (such as Tavullia, Gradara, Rocca dei Malatesta); Ape Proto, with powerful torpedoes on exhibit on a special circuit (not to be repeated on the roads!); Ape Tuning, a challenge for people’s imagination with a host of original customised solutions. The event closed with a grand parade and award ceremony, together with opportunities to sample the local gastronomic specialities.

MONDAINO ENTERS THE “MOTOR VALLEY” WITH THE APE. EuroApe is organised by Ape Club d’Italia as an annual meeting in a characteristic Italian village or town for Ape collectors and enthusiasts from all over Italy and farther afield. This year’s EuroApe event was the seventh: the candidate chosen to host the 2016 rally was the town of Mondaino in the province of Rimini, for its hospitality industry and tourist attractions. Thanks to close cooperation with the municipality, which embraced the initiative enthusiastically, EuroApe 2016 offered a rich menu with something for everyone: tourism, culture and entertainment. The organisers’ objective was to involve Mondaino and the local community as fully as possible to “immerse” the public in a colourful stream of Ape believers. The objective was successfully achieved, so much so that the Chairman of the Emilia Romagna Regional Council, Stefano Bonaccini, who attended the closing event, declared that Mondaino had been included in the “Motor Valley” project for the region’s motor brands.

APE CLUB D’ITALIA:
FIRST TEN YEARS!

Ape Club d’Italia was formed in 2006 by a group of passionate Ape believers. The association is a national body as far as its activities are concerned, but has an international reach through its many contacts abroad, especially with fans in Germany and Austria, who are particularly interested in technical and historical information. The Club is organised into sections, operating at municipal, provincial or regional level depending on the number of members. Ape Club d’Italia is part of the Vespa World Club, like the national Vespa Clubs. Its purpose is to promote every facet of people’s passion for the Ape, safeguarding and restoring vehicles of historic interest, providing information for youngsters who use the Ape as their main means of transport and coordinating sporting events for racing Apes. Ape Club d’Italia is a no-profit association formed by volunteers, and an affiliate of the sports promotion body recognised by the CONI A.S.I. Associazioni Sportive e Sociali Italiane.

APE CLUB D’ITALIA: “AUTOMOTORETRO’ 2016” (Exhibition)

One of the more notable initiatives is the creation of an Official Register as a record of existing vintage Apes. The Ape Censimento, as the register is called, is staffed by a group of technical experts who assess the vehicles presented for their inspection and provide information about their restoration and conservation. Ape Club d’Italia also offers members information on where to find spare parts.

SPLIT, CROATIA:
THE STORY OF DINO AND HIS “LOW LAMP” VESPA

A splendid photo from Dino Franičević of his restored Vespa scooter, on the famous “Riva” walk in Split

The email, entitled “Greetings from Split, Croatia”, reads: “After 8 years of restoration work, my Vespa is in perfect condition. I attach some photos and a video…”.

Greetings from Split, Croatia

The scooter is a splendid example of a vintage “low lamp” Vespa from the 1950s (125cc). The model is similar to the Vespa that co-starred in the famous movie “Roman Holiday” (1953) with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

Dino Franičević tells us more: “I was born in 1980 in Split, Croatia, and I’m a mechanical engineer. When I was at school, I was crazy about motorbikes and cars. So it was no surprise that I began restoring this ‘low lamp’ Vespa with my grandfather, who had had it as a gift from his aunt who lived in Trieste. At that time, no one rode that type of vehicle: my grandfather was one of the first three people in Split to own a Vespa. The very first person was our famous footballer Bernard Vukas (a player on the Hajduk-Split team).”

Dino continues: “My grandfather and I didn’t know who the first owner of our Vespa was, then under the saddle near the carburettor I found a small badge with the name of the Piaggio dealer, Filippini & figli (Brescia, Italy). I suppose the first owner bought the scooter from Filippini. Its serial number is V31T 180 982 (corresponding to production years 1950-1952) and the engine number is 180 272 V32M. My grandfather rode the Vespa during the 1960, then it was put under plastic sheeting and left to rust in our yard.”

Dino's Vespa during the final stage of the restoration, which took almost eight years

“In 1998 my granddad and I cleaned the scooter and got it going again. But then for various reasons, we had to stop and couldn’t complete the restoration. For a long time, I didn’t have any time to devote to the Vespa (I was finishing my studies at the maritime and naval architecture faculty in Split, and then I began working). In 2008, I bought a number of spare parts from an Italian restorer: the front and rear shock dampers, the gear stick, some bearings and other items. Then in 2010, I entrusted the engine to a specialist Petar Tokić (Motorin), a licensed mechanic in the Piaggio service network. Once the restoration of the engine was completed, I turned to a professional painter to paint the Vespa, and bought the original green Max Meyer 6002M paint. In 2014 my Vespa was ready!”

However, Dino Franičević is extremely thorough; so read on: “I polished every nut and bolt, and took another two years before I finally assembled all the parts. The video was shot in February 2016, on the famous ‘Riva’ walk in Split, with my splendid Vespa after a lengthy restoration of almost eight years.” Dino isn't a member of the Split Vespa Club yet, but he knows many club members, and is thinking of joining. We asked him: “What does the Vespa mean to you?” His answer: “Everything! It reminds me of my grandfather, and every day when I ride the scooter it’s as if he were with me... the Vespa is a way of life; I’m practically sure that on my wedding day, my wife and I will drive off on my Vespa!” It's a wonderful story, Dino: thank you!
